New to all this, need help - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I have a thunderbolt and would like to learn how to root, flash, all that good stuff.
Problem is, I don't know much about this stuff. I looked around, but couldn't find a link or a thread that was like an educational tool. If anyone knows where it is, it'd be much appreciated. Or if someone could let me know the basics, that's be good to.
I know I have to root the phone first, but I'm not sure how to save my contacts and past information(old texts). Also, I'll be rooting from a macbook.
Thanks in advance.

Why hello there Ryan!
There are several methods available to you, as well as several guides, most of which can be found here
In particular, you'll find a great guide to rooting on Mac osx here
GL and HF! And make sure you read ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS before you start. Links may die, and if you're 1/2 way through rooting it won't be good

+1, that's the stuff just remember to post any questions you may have in the Q&A section and not the development one! Happy hacking!

Welcome,
For rooting I used the "[ROOT] MR1/OTA PermRoot + Unlock Bootloader - Safer/Easier 5/12/2011" method by jcase. Once I got ADB set up on Windows it could not have been easier. Just take your time, follow the directions to a tee, and all should be well.
Since rooting I have spent a lot of time trolling these forums, using the search function ;- ) to find the information that I need, and more or less hacking on my Thunderbolt the my great delight and my wife's displeasure.
Have fun and enjoy.

[Q] New Hero user has questions

Hi all,
I am new to the HTC Hero, which i get in about 1 week. I am NOT new to the forum.
I have a HTC Touch HD (Blackstone) which i flashed a lot.
But now i am going to Android, and i wanted to know a few things to be sure before i completely destroy my Hero in 1 hour..
I see of course, after looking for myself (maybe not good enough), that there are some Sticky's in the forum which explains CID bypassing, make Root, etc..
Is there any topic or document which can explain me step by step, with some referrals to topics on forum, and nessecary files, how i can flash my HTC Hero?
for example: here, here and here (blackstone examples)
Thanks guys
everyone is new at one time or another but seriously you are adept enough to post links to threads for blackstone kacjking you SHOULD have enough about you to be able to read the threads on rooting the hero.
Its a doddle to do and reading a few threads wont kill you.
The threads directs you to the MODACO siter where the files are kept. The Unlcker.com has videos to follow AND links to the files needed (again all these are held in the threads and stickies)
You wont kill the hero and its as easy to unlock these as it is the blackstone (I used to have one so I know)
Enjoy and search is your friend!!
Gurry
btw the thread on rooting is this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=552591
Sorry for the quick posts but the edit function wont work on my work pc!!
thank you, this is helpfull
i already have read the posts about the rooting stuff.
but i just wanted to be sure before i root things etc (hehe) that i wont kill it..
i wont so i am pleased
thanks for the answer!

New phone and need a little assistance.

This is my first android phone. Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant. I plan on rooting my phone tomorrow and I was wanting to put 2.2 firmware on the phone. I have been told that there are different roms and such and I was hoping someone here could tell me which is the best way to go about upgrading my phone. I tried reading some threads but I am not sure which is the best way to go. Any help would be appreciated.
If you've never rooted your phone and installed a custom ROM before... Read, read, read these forums and especially the thread for the ROM you are thinking of installing. Know how to get yourself out of a jam before you even get in it.

+1...This is what I followed when I flashed my wifes vibrant awhile back, and followed again just a few days ago when I picked mine up.
As for 2.2 ROMs...you will just have to play with them. I would recommend starting with flashable ROMs as they are a little easier to work with if you do not have a lot of experience with flashing
I might suggest this one if you want a no frills basic 2.2 stable, rooted ROM to work with

Thread cleaned. Stop the flaming.
Thanks for the replies! I will start off with that nice guide on how to root the phone. I get the phone tomorrow so hopefully I will not be in here crying about how I ruined my phone. The last phone I modded was the first gen iPhone a few years back. There are so many different things to read that this is a little confusing. I mostly created this thread to get pointed to what works best for those on this forum.

[Q] SN - Super noob

Hey guys! I got my atrix 4g around the end of may and i haven't regretted switching from iphone since! . But i don't know alot about android hacking, modding, tips, tricks, features, etc, so as you can see i need help. I was wondering if some of the AMAZING people on the android forum could maybe take me in as an "Apprentice" so that i could learn all the hacking and tricks about atrix or android in general , like i knew when i had an iphone?

How did you learn when you had your iPhone? In most cases most people will search and read this forum time after time and then they fig, it out. So my advice is to read and search before you want to start asking questions im sure somewhere on this thread there is the anwser you are looking for. If you cant find what your looking then you need to find someone in the dev. forum and be nice and they might will help you. There is alot of really good devs out there that are willing to help you. I am a noob too that came from iphone

Yup, read a lot, search a lot, and you will have to try a lot. If you follow instructions, most of the time everything will go fine, but if it doesn't, you also need to look for the answers you will need to get back on track. You will get frustrated a lot, but the best way to learn anything is to try things yourself, and learn by your mistakes.
There are plenty of resources outside of XDA to learn about Android. There are some very good guides in the Atrix forums here also which will help you. Don't expect the devs to teach you programming. You will have to learn that yourself, but the devs will help you when you get stuck...........if, as was said, you treat them nicely!
Remember to post in the correct forums also. You will bring down the fires of hell on you if you post questions in the dev forum, themes in the general forum, etc.
lol thank you both, if its not too much can i run a scenario by you?
you may well know that gingerbread is comming to atrix [:{D>]
and i saw on the forum a build for 2.3.4 through hwk
Sooo many questions popped up in my head
1.what is hwk?
2.how would i return to 1.8.3 stock
3. what is flashing?
4.what is sbf?
and etc
do you know any threads or people who could help me?

1) HKTW is a Chinese version of ginergbread more or less (i.e. Hong Kong Tai Wan), that happens to be usable on a U.S. AT&T Atrix w/ a unlocked boot loader. It's pretty buggy, since it wasn't specially designed for our device or carrier.
2, 3 & 4) To return to stock, which you will have to do if you flash any ROM before being able to OTA (Over The Air) update, you have to flash (a nice word for install) a fresh sbf. A sbf file is a original source file from Motorola that upon installing (i.e. flashing) will return your device back to stock, more or less. For instance, if you were to flash the 1.26 sbf onto your phone, it would exactly like the way you got it from the store; everything back to "normal" and stock. So before you do this you make a backup of your stuff, preferably on a external sd card. That way if you have to flash a sbf file and return to stock for what ever reason, you can re-install your stuff with minimal effort. Here is a good guide for flashing a sbf, explaining what you need and what to do:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072
and here is another for all the sbf files currently:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125944
I'm sure you have more questions, so ask always, and I'll try to help when & where I can.
Ok, so I'm assuming you are running a U.S. AT&T Atrix??
So the first thing you are probably going to want to do is get Root access (like getting a jail break on iphone, more or less):
- If your on 4.1.83 firmware (the most current). You can check by going to setting -> About Phone -> System Version. You will need to use Gingerbreak to Root your phone. This will most likely wipe your phone, so save what you can on your pc, ext. sd card, etc.
Instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046626
And Crap, my wife called and whats to grab a bite to eat... start there, and I'll edit and add to the post later.

New to Evo 3d..help with root?

hello.i have a Sprint htc evo 3d,android version 4.0.3.software version.2.95.651.6710rd.I would like to know whats the best and easiest way to root the evo3d and what is a good rom to run that is very stable and wifi and everything works..and a good kernel to run with it..i have rooted tablets and other phones before, but evo looks a lil complicated..sorry if posted in wrong section, and thank you again for your help..( i tried following these steps..-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218193) watching the video and going step by step..doing full root part..when i go and open revolutionary.and run it.gives me..(your device.shooter with hboot 1.58.0000 is not supported at this time..can someone please help me..
You can't find the relevant thread and follow directions? I'll even help you out, you'll need a 32bit unix/linux. Ubuntu has a nice bootable you can burn and use. Then you use the jpuntubear executable downloaded from their website within that. Granted the one provided by the relevant thread might work on a 32bit OS but I can verify that it didn't work on Win7 64bit. Oh and you will have to hotwire your phone, literally short circuit your phone to get s-off so you can put a working ROM on. If you just want root and ok with stock OS, then you don't have to short your phone.
Also, if you can't find relevant thread and follow directions how do you expect to survive in the world of custom ROM's?
Dogahn
Lurk More.
I have Windows 7 32 bit..
I also have the same issue. A couple of months ago I tried to get s-off and it failed with the same message. After not finding any relevant information I gave up and just rooted my phone with the stock rom. I have had several android phones (Epic, galaxy SII, Evo 4G, lg Optimus V) and never had any problems. Make sure to reply with an answer rather than bashing the person asking the question.
At the moment I just want to root it..and methods that I have been following don't work..
This method works:

It's close to the top of this forum. Read through the thread titles. You'll find all of your questions answered if you bother to look for them.
Swyped from my GS4.
Nevertheless, belongs in Q&A. Mods please move.

As others have mentioned, what is probably the most comprehensive compilation of information you will find on the web can be found on the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438
Additionally, if you have issues with the "wire trick" to get S-OFF you can always just do the HTC unlock. You won't be able to flash HBoots but you can flash ROMs and Kernels (use fastboot to boot into recovery from PC).
I, for one, can state that I've done the JopunutBear "wire trick" successfully twice on a Windows 8, 64-bit OS. However, if you choose to try to do this know that you will be entirely on your own as they no longer support anything other than Linux.

[Q] root android

I am triing in rooting few device (lenovo ideatab a1000F, smasung packet neo, vodafone ideos u8150-d. But now, I am getting crazy. I can't find a correct valid guide. I tried kingo, unlock root. IN other site I found seems valid guide, but no link to the rom!
Can someone help me?
I first had a similar impression. If you're not used to the whole android world, it first looks quite confusing. Unclear were to find information, and many are outdated. Discussions and information are mixed in the forums, and most files are released on one-click-hosters.
In the end I found projects like CyanogenMod and OmniRom helpful. Their Wikis are much more clear than the forums to me. Though, once you read some threads on xda, you learn how to extract the important information from there as well.
So don't give up, try to find your way and don't be scared to try things out even if you're not too sure whether it's the right way
thanks
