Battery Temperature? - HTC EVO 3D

So I just got my Evo 3D and I love the phone but it seems to heat up really quickly. At the store on first boot up it wouldn't load, sales guy did a battery pull then it finally loaded up. I then noticed that within a few minutes the phone was already hot. I gave it a full charge and noticed that the temperature when I was doing light texting was always above 100f. The range it's usually in with light usage is from 100-112f, seems a bit high to me.
What's your battery temp with light usage? Also what is considered the normal battery temperature with light usage and heavy? Thanks.

I've gotten my OG Evo up to 48C (118.4 F) playing angry birds hardcore. It's sitting at 33 (91.4 F) right now, just pulled it out of my pocket after 5 hours at work not using it at all.
Just remember, your tech is more heal tolerant than you are. I'm reading that Lithium Ion batteries are 100% safe up to 60C (140 F)
Also, it'll be a bit high at first, that's just how the first few charge cycles go... But I'd check to make sure you don't have background apps sitting there draining your battery, that'll make it run hot.

Wow didn't know mobile phone batteries could withstand so much heat, just checked it sitting idle and it's at 80f. Funny how quickly the temperature rises though...if I were to start texting it would be back to 100+ in no time.

[Q] Excesive heat from atrix

Over the past month and a half that I have had an atrix I have noticed that my atrix has burnt me several times. I have it in my pocket and it just gets really hot. It doesnt seem to be the battery as the entire phone is very hot. This has been happening even before I rooted my phone. It burns me through the otter box. Im reluctant to take this back to at&t as i would have to unroot it. Are other people having this issue?
If its ridiculously hot, as it seems it is, thats not normal and you should return it ASAP. Also rooting would not affect heat output in any way.
One, wrong section.
Check a taskmanager when it starts running hot. Find out what is pulling so much processor load to create the heat.
I had this problem, took it back for replacement, then had the same problem on the new device. It turned out it was the Exchange sync causing the Motorola.services process to run constantly and kill the battery.
I solved it by changing the Exchange sync from push to every 15 minutes. I also do not use any sync with Google (mail, contacts, or calendar). My battery life is unbelievable now and the device stays cool 90% of the time.
Wasn't crossposting restricted in this forum?
Ha. Excessive heat. Buddy at least your phone doesn't have a aluminum battery door. Try touching that when your phone is being overclocked @ 1.5 ghz.
But essentially something that is syncing often is causing your phone to use the radio alot. And since its in your pocket there really isn't any airflow to cool it down hense the phone will generate heat.

Hi all!
I hope my post will help other people like myself that ware looking for information regarding this issue:
I installed TempMonitor and followed the teperateure of the device. There are 2 temperatures to measure: CPU and battery.
I will elaborate my findings:
1. CPU temp at rest without sync (push mail turned off) is 28-31C after a while (depends on the room temp).
In slight effort the CPU temp can get close to 50C but normaly is ~40-45C
It seems like the CPU temp is not that important and only when the CPU is running hot for ~10 minutes you feel the heat and it starts to get annoying. Notice that in this point a lot of battery juice is drawn.
2. Battery temp is also ~28C at rest. It gets up to 35C on ongoing effort. Since it is very large (1920mAh), you will feel the heat. I think that the battery is the main heat factor in the device and the CPU and graphic engine running in addition to the battery getting hot will cause the entire device to feel warm or even hot.
3. I noticed that at the beginning, one corner of the device (lower right) got REALLY hot and REALLY annoying at times. After 2 weeks, the heat spread became more bearable. I think it has something to do with the battery "setteling in".
4. Running apps that constantly check for updates and even push gmail, will cause your phone to run 1-2 degrees hotter and the more apps you add the hotter the phone will get at the resting state. Hence, when starting other apps it will get hotter and faster. even PowerControlPlus which is a very simple widget gets the deviec ~1 degree hotter on idle.
5. As the battery gets drained, it emits more heat. Try to charge your phones and not run battery draining apps when the battery is less than 30% or even 40% full.
I will comfort you all by telling you that I have a few friends with Galaxy S and Vibrants and their devices get hot too. A bit less on normal use like browsing but pretty much the same on 3D games and such.
I hope I helped because I was really frustrated by it for the first 2 weeks. I hope it will keep improving. I also purchased a case and hopefully it will help with the heat spreading around the phone - will update.
Please install Watchdog from the market to check if a process is acting crazy.
In my case it was 'Android media process' which ate 50% of all the processing power. There was not much of a performance drop since it occupied just one core.
Anyway Watchdog will give you an alert in case a process exceeds a certain percentage and from there you can google the problem or uninstall the app which is causing problems.
My Atrix 4G displayed a temperature of 37 degrees celsius. The highest till now I have seen. Could be higher though.
Its a dual core processor stop worrying about heat unless its hotter then 50c

@OP: I think ur safe.
how you turn off the push email? someone can indicate your configuration? thx

When watching youtube I reach 42 degrees celcius in the battery and it literally burns my hand. Would maybe return it if I hadn't ordered it from Canada.

thats because aluminium is a conducter which will let the heat out. plastic keeps it in. so if its hot i wonder why? xD

[email protected] keeping it in. Who knew one just needed a gnat's-hair-thick sheet of plastic to insulate their house?
I'm having the same issue, but it's only coming from the bottom half of my atrix, and only since I installed a new LCD. I'm actually worried the heat will destroy my mem card and sim.
I've ordered a new LCD now, so hopefully that'll sort it out.
It's probably just apps constantly eating cpu. My problem is with the laptop dock though. The battery in it gets way too hot. It's the first piece of electronics I've had that actually made me reflex my hand away from the heat.

Over heating!!

Anyone returning their evo because of a overheating problem? Seems to be a serious problem and don't want it blowing up in my face. Read the article yesterday and checked mine and it charged at 4.348 mv. Or is this a software issue?
You wouldn't happen to have a eBay battery would you? Also the battery may get hot the first few charges. To reach 4.3V, well I'm not exactly sure how that's happening. Take it back I guess but if its your first charges then just give it time.
Unless the phone gives you a warning, or just shuts off its probably not overheating. You would be surprised how hot these can get and still be in a normal heat range. I tax my Evo pretty hard and it will get pretty damn hot, but never overheat hot.
What are you doing when it heats up? Are you playing games, charging, talking. Maybe some more info?
I've had mine in my pocket and noticed that some live wall papers really get the phone cooking. The My Beach one almost burned my leg! I guess my phone turned on in my pocket and it was going to town with random screen pushes. The phone was hot enough to hurt sensitve skin.
I've had my OG EVO get griddle pan hot several times. It has survived as well as the batteries. Every time I think I solved it, the next time it was something else.
Knock on wood, so far my 3VO hasn't got as hot. Yet.
next time you phone gets hot check and see how well your gps works.
there are some funky things going on with this phone.
Playing spider man and game froze the phone got extremely hot had to do a batt pull battery died in like 7 Min's
initial batt life was great like 14 hours and still had 50 percent after a week it got OG evo crappy, factory reset and juice def ultimate and batt is back to great.
Don't know if i should return for exchange.

No I'm using the stock battery and it was just plug into the wall charger and not doing anything. Don't we have 4.2v batteries? Shouldn't it not be charging anything about that?

Haven't had this issue. I've been traveling and have changed the phone quite a bit from using the phone as a game system. It does get warm after 30 mins of angry birds. Nothing extreme however.

It wont blow up on you. You should be safe at those ranges. when you start hiting 115 and 120 thats when you may want to unplug it and turn it off.
I had mine charging in the car mount last Sunday while running google nav, and the LED started blinking red and green. I assume this is the overheat indicator, although I can't find it in any documentation.
I had one weird overheating incident right after getting it activated at the Sprint store. 15 minutes later, it had been sitting on my desk and I go to pick it up and its crazy hot. I quickly pulled the back off and removed the battery, the battery was not hot, it was something behind the cameras. CPU I suppose. I waited a few minutes to put the battery back in but then it wouldn't turn on (overheating protection?). Went back to the the Sprint store for an exchange. Waited, waited. In the meantime I put the battery back in and it started up. After waiting 45 minutes with no help in sight I gave up... sigh. Sprint stores around here are always a PITA.
I haven't seen this problem again but seriously what the f? I went ahead and applied the OTA updates in case they included some fix for this.
Yeah, in car charger mine hit 114 with gps going. Took it back, better but not great with the new one 102. EVO 4g ran hot but that was self induced. Oc etc... Stock shouldn't go above 102 ever

My question is should a phone be charging over 4.2 when the voltage of the battery is 4.2 max? Wouldn't that greatly reduced the battery life if charged over that voltage? Anyone care to explain? Cos I'm really not sure what the implications are.

The voltage of the stock battery is 3.8V. I am surprised it would see higher voltages but it may have a variance that is +-(.4) even when charging the voltage shouldn't vary that much, but the amperage should increase instead to charge the battery and run the phone at the same time. I am not sure where you seen the voltage at though so if its an app, how accurate is that app. How often does this happen as well?

Are you guys having heat issues/problems?

So I decided to test my 3D with my Shift and EVO4G in terms of heat emission on all three devices. Here are the quick results. All with max brightness.
4G - Hovers around 88-93F through normal use
Shift - Hovers around 88-90F through normal use
3d - Hovers around 88-96F through normal use
Played HIMYM for 25 minutes each. Same clip, same 960x540 resolution.
4G - 101F
Shift - 98F
3D - 103F (101F if you avoid grasping the back)
Played Crystal Defenders for 30 minutes each
4G - 101F
Shift - 98F
3D - 111F
So the 3D is running a little hotter. Everything but the Crystal Defenders scares me, but I guess it is a game after all. Here's the weird thing though. I put all 3 on the charger and when I woke up
4G - 83F
Shift - 80F
3D - 113F
This is with the AC on full blast all night (its 98F outside). The 3D was molten hot. I looked at history and around 5AM an hour after I slept it was ~78F then at 8AM it spiked and maxed out at 114F while charging. This happened from 8AM to 2PM when I woke up.
I don't get what's wrong. Everything seems pretty comparable with past phones. I'm scared it ran at ~112+ for 6 hours. It might be even be dangerous for me as it might explode at those levels.
I took mine back today and got it exchange -- though, not easily. Mine had rebooted when it got hot last week and it was at the point where the game Majhong would make it so hot I couldn't answer a call.
They tried to tell me all smartphones get hot (not as hot as this did) and it might be the GPS radio which is normal (palying Majhong? Really?) and if I would reset it and leave it stock I would probably be OK (WHAT?!).
The guy even asked if I was rooted -- which I'm not -- because I use ADW laucher! LOL!
So, I got a little loud. I told them I expected them to at least pretend to take me seriously and trust that I am not stupid about my phone. They were busy, so they exchanged it.
I'm still testing my new one.
I just got a dose of this earlier today. My gf was shopping so I sat on a bench outside and played Plants vs. Zombies. About 15-20 minutes later she called and I picked up the phone and felt like I was burning my face holding it up to talk. SUPER HOT!
That was the first time not charging that it had gotten that hot. I'm not sure if it is every time or not.
Guys just to clarify, those seem all normal (beefier hardware and whatnot) except for while it's charging.
There's a thread over at Androidforums discussing that its charging at too high of a voltage and that's the problem with the charging. People tried the extended battery and the issue disappeared for some. My phone also burns when its charging, but normally stays below 103-105.
The rest are due to screen brightness and temperatures around you (especially since its blazing hot in a lot of the US right now).
If it's reaching 110F+ on anything aside for GPS nav related stuff and heavy duty/graphics gaming (crystal defenders burns my iPhone 4 as well) then you got a problem, otherwise its normal.
If you pull the battery, it states on the label that it's safe up to 60c. That's 140F. 114 is nothing. And I'd bet the electronic parts are safer up to an even higher temperature, seeing as my PC's video card can take up to 70-75c (160ish F) without any problems.
It's warm to you, obviously. Anything above body temperature is "Warm"
Big powerful phone + no room for a big heatsink = warm phone.
Heck, I actually think the back camera is designed to be a heatsink, which would be why it feels so warm most of the time.
Also, if it's new, it does run a bit hot while the battery is in it's "Breaking in" period.
Yes. Mainly at night when charged via wall charger. Seems to not happen while charging with usb to PC.
My 3d seems to top out at 105-110 F overclocked underload. My old Samsung Moment used to be 130-140 idle........... LOL. Toasty hands during hunting season!
As annoying as it may be, I don't think this SoC is at a danger zone until around 150
mine is regularly at 45-50 deg C i think thats topping out at 125 roughly?
I left mine in the car out in coachella.... And the temp got really high... It was.120 outside that day.. Was still able to use phone... But I put it in front of the AC with battery cover off while I used it

shouldn't the 45nm gate-length of the 3vo3d result in LESS heat than the 65nm Evo OG? and, I thought it was supposed to give better battery life - what gives?

Lets try to narrow down the Overheat issue.

Edit:
From what I have gathered from those that have provided info.
Around 120*F is normal for heavy use, around 105-110* for medium use, 100-105* for light use. This is with cell data enabled, wifi lowers temps 5-10*, also temps are for extended use scenarios. (over 10-15 min)
Heavy use= 3D game or graphically intensive 2D game, streaming videos especially HD
Medium use= basic games web surfing sites with lots of images or some flash content
Light use= sending SMS, basic fooling with settings or other basic functions, streaming music with the screen off
I think we need to get a bit more scientific about testing this overheating issue out. I need help from a large group of people. I need those who think they have overheat issues and those who do not for the info to be useful.
First off... I believe these temps are just the battery, not the CPU. I think the CPU is running relatively cool as the rest of the phone does not heat up, or it seems what heat is felt is coming from the battery only.
This would explain why people claim that the extended battery does not have this issue. As batteries with higher mAh ratings are able to handle the higher power demands with less heat.
We need to do comparison tests using the same apps across tests and the same use times as well. Also no over or under-clocking and using the same CPU governor. (and between everyone participating where possible)
I have Minecraft and Sleepy Jack, they both produce similar temps after 15 minutes of play time. (around 117-120*F) I do not know if it gets any hotter with longer use because I rarely play longer than that at a time. I am at about the same temp after only 10 minutes so maybe that is the highest it gets.
I know for certain that enabling WiFi has a big impact on the temps. My fiance's phone would only get about 95*F, (according to the SetCPU widget) but when LTE is enabled it would get to 115*F. Mine hits 105* on WiFi.
I want to do at least two tests.
Lets use the following steps to test:
-For all testing the test time will be 15 minutes of play time.
-Lets all use Minecraft since there is a free version and I know the app causes the phone to work hard.
-No over or under-clocking
-On Demand governor
Test 1) Airplane mode enabled
Test 2) 3G enabled (not everyone lives in a LTE area, if you do, data from LTE enabled would be useful as well)
Now some optional tests. I did some rudimentary testing and there seemed to be an impact on temps.
Optional 3) Using interactive governor or Lag free governor
Optional 4) Use a different kernel... If you are on stock switch to ziggy's and vice versa. (this may be the most promising test as since switching to ziggy's I have had a few lockups where the old Android logo pops up on the screen and I need to do a battery pull to fix it. This happens to the fiance's device as well)
If you do these tests, please post the results, and what ROM and kernel you are using. I will keep track of the results and update as appropriate.
Lets see if we can find some consistent data and narrow this heat issue down.
Edit:
Running Ziggy's kernel I hit 108*F kept playing and shortly after the phone did the odd crash I mentioned.
Nice, had the same idea to do one of these over the weekend - you just beat me to it
I've done alot of research/ testing heat wise, and the pseudo-scientific conclusion that i've come to is that in a room temperature environment something like 75-85F idle & 110-115F netflix is normal for this gen of phones (Rezound, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S II, etc) - Give or take another 5F if you're using 4G. Seems like some devices are luckier than others & stay slightly cooler, but i'd gauge that they aren't the typical use case. IMO, (along side battery) data is a huge reason we've seen some of the face melting temperatures people have been reporting.
One thing I think would really help this thread is to set an easy to follow format for posting results. For example, here's a few tests I've done:

Edit-not quite as hot as the stock, but pretty toasty.
if it's the battery, then isn't the only parameter we need to test is current draw from the battery? no matter what radios/apps are enabled/disabled. It's bottom line is, the more we're drawing off the battery the hotter it's getting? I'd have to bring a pro in here on how Li-ion works in this form factor and why it gets hot, or what corners the battery manufacturer cut to make it possible!
The only time my battery gets hot is when I am in a weak signal area and the phone is searching for the 3G-4G signal. During daily use in a good signal area it never heats up.
My phone (and wife's also) heats up most notably during charging, especially when the battery is around 99% and going 100%. Usually the temp goes to ~ 45C (115F). In some rare cases, it was too hot to touch (dunno the exact temp). But some other times it would stay cool at all time.
Wife's first phone went into bootloop and her current phone is a new replacement. I kind of believe the overheating was the main cause of the bootloop problem.

It's more than just the battery. Also: feel free to post a test - the more data we get from everyone, the better.
One important variable missing: ambient temp.
I was just playing words with friends for ten minutes:
Ambient temp: 67, Screen brightness: 50%,
4g: ON
wifi: OFF
my temp went to 105F, it's NEVER gone to 105F when playing before... and I play it every evening. It was hooked to the USB charger at the time, and when I felt it getting so hot, I looked at battery monitor and my net charge was negative, so it was using more than it was charging off the usb...
maybe something in some of those apps triggers something that causes the temp to rise? a loop? something?

A pro huh... good thing I'm here.
Ok I'm not a "pro" as it were, but i know a thing or too.
Its not going to be simply the battery, but I think it is a big culprit, and most of these devices only provide battery temps, not CPU or internal temps, this limits our overall knowledge of what is going on internally. The battery getting hot causes the device to heat up as well so a bad battery that overheats can cause the device to overheat.
All batteries will convert some energy draw into heat. This is caused by the internal resistance of the battery. Li Ion batteries have fairly low internal resistance compared to other types, but battery design an affect power output handling. Pulling more power than the battery can handle or near its limit and you get more heat than normal. The heat to output ratio stops being proportional and becomes exponential. So that means the real kicker is the actual amp draw on the battery. How much power the battery can handle is related to both the capacity of the battery and the manufacturing process/ design of the battery construction. I bet the new devices are straining the battery more than the current design can handle. There are better battery manufacture processes for better power handling, but that increases the cost of the battery.
(BTW battery is a misnomer for these, they are cells, specifically one 3.7/8V Li Ion cell. The difference is that batteries are made up of 2 or more cells. This goes for AAA, AA, C and D cells as well. Car batteries for example are made of six 2V cells, 6V lantern batteries are made of four 1.5V cells and 9V batteries are six 1.5V cells)
This is one reason I want to do a test with airplane mode on. This helps lower the power draw and allows us to get a better overall device temp, this helps us know if there is an issue with the CPU getting excessively hot vs just the battery being stressed to hard.

One important variable missing: ambient temp.

I assumed most testing would be done at room temps of 68-72 degrees. If anyone tests in temps that are much higher or lower, then that would throw off the measurements.
I switched back to stock kernel, going to check for lockups and issues like I had before.

Charging always causes heat. You are forcing power into a small space.
Charging via USB should only get the battery a little warm to the touch. 95* or so at most.
Charging with AC should get it a few degrees higher. I would think over 100* is odd.
as you reach 100% is when the heat should spike to the max temps I mentioned, before that it should just be warmish.
I will check mine to see how it behaves, but all my R/C batteries behave that way.
Replacing the kernel with stock lowered my temps quite a bit. I was around 110-115 degrees after 30 minutes or so. This was with LTE enabled.
Nobody else have anything?
noticed most of my heating issues when 4g was on (even when idling on 4g). Leaving in wifi and 3g keep the stock battery cool...on the extended I never really notice the heat, even on 4g.
I realize that you're trying to keep things as similar as possible, but I had an issue today listening to the broncos game in the NFL app while charging. It got so hot it boot looped. After getting it back up and running I started monitoring battery temps and even with the screen off and just listening to the game, it would get extremely hot. Btw, I have 4G 4 bars. A couple of times I ran to the freezer and put the phone in it for a couple minutes to cool it down as the temps got above 117°F.
From here, I thought it might be the CPU, so I set the maximum setting to 384 in antutu and then let the phone sit there with the screen off just as before listening to the game and still charging. Same thing, phone got extremely hot, 115°F. Although, what I find strange, is I can watch Netflix while charging and even tho it gets warm, it never gets above 115°F and never goes into the boot loop issue. Same exact location, charger, ambient temps, signal, the works. So I'm wondering if an app is just poorly written and causes some sort of excessive use of the radio.
On another note, I had a rezound battery in my thunderbolt and never had any issues what so ever with heat.

What temperatures are you people expecting to see just out of curiousity? I mean if we run 3d intensive apps, videos, extreme web browsing we're going to see high temps since we are stressing the devices. We do have to remember these are compact devices and they are limited to what type of heatsinks/cooling they can add. From the multiple posts form this thread and others like it, we can see the majority of our devices run at same temps while under load. If it hasn't already been done maybe we should contact HTC and see what they say? Just a thought.

I am trying to find the norms and what is too hot.
I am thinking 115 is normal for heavy use. But we need to be sure, if someone says they only hit 100 under similar conditions as someone that hits 120. it may be that 120 is a problem temp and that 100 is normal. It may also be that the person only hitting 100 is just lucky.

Go play an app that is heavy in 3D, lets see what temps you get. If you go much over 120 it may be an issue.
Running Gun Bros for about 20 minutes gets me up to about 105°F. Right now after the phone had been sitting for 5ish hours doing nothing its at 98°F.

I think it is Ziggy's kernel I have never got 125f when tethering for 30min or playing GTA for 30 min. I am going to try another kernel.

Heat

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Essential Phone stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Have not experienced any heating at all
I am experiencing heating issues, I would like to know if it's just me and hopefully I just have a defective device. The battery Temp stays around 49 Celsius
My phone does get a little hot... Altho I was jus using Google duo which uses a lot of resources I believe... Not 100% if that's the case tho, and it cooled rather quickly after I ended the phone call...
I'm not experiencing any heat on the phone at all.

It gets pretty warm when I quick charge and use the phone at the same time but I think that goes for most of the phones out there
It won't get very hot. If the internal temp gets to 44C (112F) it aggressively throttles the big cluster down to about 1.2GHz, which is about half the maximum speed.
At 41C its down to 1.8GHz
At 40C its down to 2.1GHz
So in the span from 39C-43C (102F-109F) The performance drops by 50%.
A 4 degree C temperature span. This is the most aggressive throttling I've seen in any device I've owned.
I noticed this morning during charging the phone is getting too hot to touch around the upper right corner where the 360 camera attaches (which I don't have.)
no heat issues here yet.
Ya I am having some issues when I charge my phone and watch YouTube at the same time

Mine is hot at times as well. How can you tell the temperature of the battery?

Same here I feel it at times of heavy usage and charging
Accu battery says I'm around 107.4 F when I'm charging and using heavy. But that's the hottest it gets. I generally sit it next to a fan whenever I experience this. But it does nothing for internal temp which stays at 107.4 but the outside is cool to touch. And now that I think about it I may be wing about the temp. Not sure if it was 104.7 or 107.4. But that's besides the point.
Yes this phone does get hot at time of heavy gaming/ usage/ etc

I use Ampere, and put a 1x1 widget on the home screen. The widget shows the mA (+/-), battery status (charging/discharging), battery %, and battery temp.
No heat issues, not even playing Pokemon Go.
I ran my phone on battery with Waze on for 2 hours and the display turned off, made a few long phone calls along the way, the phone was very cool IMHO based on other phones I had that I would run Waze on. Only used about 25% of the battery in this 2 hour timeframe with Waze, phone calls, emails coming in and news alerts popping up occasionally. Then connect the phone to a cheap USB-C phone charger that is probably low current and drove another hour and the phone was still cool.
I have not checked temperatures, but from the handling of the phone, it clearly did not feel warm.
So far, so good IMHO.
heating issues with essential phone
having heat issues when I'm using as a hotspot for video. nothing of concern.
Never had any heat issues on 7.1 or 8.1
