just wondering if there is anyone working on this, or if the source is even out yet....tmo did say that hey would have upcoming android releases within 3-5 months from release of said versions. Just curious if there are any leaks that anyone has come across.
Thanks

From my understanding, a gingerbread kernel will only work with a gingerbread rom.
You want a flashable 2.3 kernel modded to work on 2.2 - is that what you are asking?
Yes and no, I'm just wondering if anyone is working on a gingerbread rom for vibrants, and from what i understand, gingerbread roms won't work unless it includes a gingerbread kernel.

Please put your questions to: Vibrant Q&A
your question: "is there a 2.3 kernel that works in 2.2?"
problem: this makes no sense. only 2.2 kernels work in 2.2. Only 2.3 kernels work in 2.3. What are you trying to ask?
Interpretation: "is anyone working on a 2.3 rom for your vibrants?"
Answer: yes. CM just upped a test version of 2.3 IN ALPHA (not the same as the ones that appeared in december), but right now it's almost exclusively i9k only (to convert the radio file takes a bit or work).
Good news for our vibrants, Krylon360 of TeamWhiskey is working on a 2.3 port himself. But the progress is going to be a while since he's the only one working on it.
hey everyone, i usually dont post, observer is more like it. but i am having touble and i hope someone could shed some light. the first issue is with the dow kernel from tw. it wont recognize my headset as a microphone headset, only plays music, and second, ffc isn't my default camera when i use messenger, fring, or qik. it works fine, except for the low light/low banding issue, havent found anything for that yet, but i digress. those programs go automatically to my back cam, not sure what i'm doing wrong. thanks in advance for the help and just wanted to say thanks to all the devs. you guys are awesome, we would be running crappy slow phone and slaves to our networks. you guys (and gals) rock.
Hi
I have a brand new Motorola Defy on T-Mobile UK still running 2.1. It is red lens. There is still no official update for it.
Whilst I am quite geeky, I prefer my phone to just work. So once I have upgraded it I don't plan to do so again for another 12-18 months unless there is a really good reason to update before hand.
So I am looking for a stable update, that will still be compatible with new apps in 12-18 months time. I want the updates for the following reasons: speed, battery life, as few bugs as possible, stability, any camera improvements and 720p video recording.
Yes it is a long list I figure an Android 2.3 is probably better than a 2.2 for future proofing. Last night I spent a few hour reading the wiki and information about lots of roms.
I am not looking for help in how to do anything as there are quite a lot of info on the threads about it. I would just like to know which is the best rom/s to install now, from experienced users.
Thanks Alex
The official update for T-Mobile UK android 2.2 (froyo) has been out for a couple of weeks now - it's on the Motorola Software Update site ready for download. There's also the retail version there that would have no operator logo etc.
I'm using CM7 on my UK Defy (green lens on mine as it's an early one) & find it be the best ROM I've used so far - much better than the stock eclair it came with & better than the froyo ROMS I flashed (used 2 leaked UK 2.2 & a Nordic 2.2).
I'd recommend CM7 as it's very stable for me - no random reboots or freezing like would happen from time to time on 2.1 & 2.2 when I had those.
CM7 is still in development but it's working fine for me but if started using it you may need to flash an upgrade every so often but this was quite easy for me & only took a few minutes.
MIUI is also out for the Defy - haven't used it myself so can't comment but it seems popular.
Thanks for the info.
Can anyone tell me how I can get this posted in the General section?
I have no idea how it got into the Themes and Apps section.
It might be on the motorola website but over an hour later I cannot get the installer to recognise an internet connection, so I will give up on this. CM7 doesn't yes support 720p recording so I will try something different.
if you want a customisable and pure speed ROM, it's CM7, but if you dont plan to tinker a lot, then MIUI is pretty good as it's already a pretty nice looking ROM, with a lot of iOS influence
Im so good at listening to advice I ignored it all and tried to install 2.3.4 from forum.xda-developers com/showthread.php?t=1135901.
Somehow I not get a flashing red moto logo, system restore and bootloader do nothing and the phone does not show up on my computer. At a bit of a loss what to do now!
Remove battery, and put it back.. While starting keep the vol up button pressed. It ll take u to moto bootloader state. Connect to pc with usb. Use rsdlite software to detect it.. Then flash with any full sbf of ur choice to give back life to ur defy...
Thanks for the info. It sounds so simple. Sadly after hours of trying this morning I still can't get the phone to turn on.
First of all: check if your phone has a green or red lens (the answer is here). If your phone has a green lens, sorry, but nothing can be done for it to record 720p videos (hardware limitation). But, if your Defy is brand-new, you'll probably get the red lensed one, because green lensed Defy are old and, AFAIK, not selling anymore.
If you want speed and stability, with 720p recording, I recommend you to install Barebones Froyo with Hancock's 720p mod (mod available here). For better compatibility, ROMs based on the leaked GBs are the best option, and there is also a patch for it to be able to record in 720p (even though I wasn't able to get this one working on my phone - but many people did and are satisfied with it).
For speed + stability + compatibility, CM7 is the one to go for. But it doesn't have 720p enabled yet (some nightlies do, but they're not stable, and even on these nightlies, 720p is not working for everyone).
MiUI is also stable - and beautiful - but not as fast as CM7. For CM7's speed with the looks of MiUI, check here for the Meizu theme.
First thing first... Flash back your phone with full sbf. I would recommend start flashing froyo 2.2.2 since you're from 2.1.
I assume your Defy is red lens as it is newly bought right.. Flash gingerbread 2.3.4 and patch it the 720p followed with installing lgcamera for video recorder. Lastly patch it multitouch to have more than 2 fingers touch. You can find these all in the developer section. Above poster already guided you how to go into bootloader, clean cache and installing rsdlite drivers. Take one step slowly...

Hmm... my Defy is a May 2011 model (taken from the serial number) brand new UK retail version from Amazon. Updated to 2.2.2 from the Moto site. Lens is clearly Green...
CM7, out of the question.
CM7... da best u can hav!
CM7 is really stable for defy!
Stock 2.2 GB rooted and overclocked is really nice.
Current custom roms break too much at the moment for me.
I need an infrastructure hot spot, stable wifi, gps that does not need agps to lock and working fm receiver.
I fancy a go with CM7 or miui, but I am going to wait a while for all the fixes to roll in. The devs need people to test and use these roms, but with over 2 million hits i think they have enough already
Ask yourself if you really need a custom rom yet?
I would recommend either a stock froyo rom or adlxmod froyo, as they are stable and won't require any real upkeep. Adlxmod can be updated directly from the phone itself and is hassle free.
CM7 is probably one of the best roms but has nightly updates almost everyday, which is great for people like me who want to be on the bleeding edge but not if you dont want to update.
Stock 2.2.2 GB retail via MSU has 1-2 random reboots/day marring its Kudos. Always when you really don't need it...
True, I forgot about that, I tried it for an hour and was amazed that the official was that bad. In that case nordic froyo is very stable and 2.3.4 motoginger is also very good too, just takes a bit longer to install though.

Really? Wow, mine has been rock solid with overclock to 1Ghz. My hero running MoDaCo and villain used to bork out all the time, but the defy has been up for 3 days now using gps, sms, email, wifi tether and web and not a single reboot or lock.
Running launcher pro with scale transition effect and it is very smooth and responsive - very pleased with it so far.
Sounds like I might be doing something wrong
I wonder if some folks hardware (mem and cpu) is a bit flaky? Might be interesting to see place and date of manufacturer of those units that are rebooting. Still does not explain why they can run CM7 well though.
Practically every rom has ran fine for me except 2.2.2 uk. I even used MSU and then re-did using rsdlite, both instances it was terrible. If I was a standard user and didn't experiment with different roms I probably would have been pissed you must be one of the lucky ones.
Hello all!
First: sorry for my not quite good english.
Second: I have some type of problem. Actually I have on my SGS Vibrant ROM: Simply Honey Revolution 5.0 based on 2.3.4 android version. Now I'm thinking about uprage to some of ICS versions, like: ICS Passion v12 or Team ICSSGS RC4.1. I don't know what rom is better for me.
In 2.3.4 rom I have almost everything working, except GPS and front camera. Battery life is very good for me. I don't want new issues.
So, someone can help me to decide what I should do? Make upgrade to ICS (and what rom is better for me?) or stay at Simply Honey rom?
Thanks for advice!
Regards.
I had froyo and tried CM7. Didnt like much and went straight to ICS Passion. No regret at all, smoother, faster. It has the mute/unmute issue and you also need to reboot in order that GPS works. But still think that its better than GB 2.3.4 ROM. Didnt try ICSSGS, just Doc's (didnt like that much) and Passion so if you do try ICSSGS, give your thought.
the devs for ICSSGS dont actually have the vibrant. its a port from the i9000 and built off aosp. ics passion is built for the vibrant off cm9 framework. imho, ics passion or ecstasy are the best.
Ahh I see. So, for me better option is make upgrade to ICS. So I will try it. I hope that I won't be disappointed.
Thanks!

ICS beats any previous Android version by a mile.
The only thing that MIGHT suffer is your gaming performance. I've found that certain games my phone should play don't play as smoothly as intended (I'm talking about graphics intensive games here, like MC3, GTA 3, 9MM). The ROM is still in BETA and there are still some things to work out, but it's a very smooth experience overall.

Yes , Wrong.
Only reason not to go ICS is if you want the CM7 extras like permissions management. Passion or, if you want straight AOSP source, ICSSGS. Good luck.
These ice cream sandwich roms are pretty impressive and run very smooth when installed properly... The passion rom is no longer in beta and is pretty smooth for me.. Everything works except the gps after deep sleep.. Even the mute/unmute issue has been fixed!

I have Eclipse 1.1 (old I know) it was great when it first came out and I flashed it. But now I need something new bc its not working as good, and I know theres better versions and other ROMs that are possibly better.
Any suggestions on which ROM to flash and why?
Depends on what you want. If you want a fully functional ROM I'd check out the latest edition of Eclipse.
Cyanogenmod 7.2 rc1 has a small amount of bugs, but is for the most part fully functional. HDMI mirroring doesn't work and that's the one and only downside to me. I still use CM7 as a "daily driver" so to speak. Lots of customization and with the hacks/mods found in this forum I get excellent signal strength, connection speeds and battery life. Wifi still sleeps when the screen's off, but with the v3 build.prop mashup it reconnects on waking within seconds every single time.
Cyanogenmod 9 alpha 3 is somewhat buggy as it's in its early alpha stages. There's no camera yet, but DZK already said there will be a fix for alpha 4. Same with aces miui. It's real slick, being on ics. I like it, but won't stay until there's a working camera and more stability. When that happens this rom will be simply amazing. Overall it's pretty sweet and at the very least, worth checking out/playing around with.....
MIUI4 will be awesome too once the bugs are sorted and fixed. As stated before- the next release will also have a working camera. MIUI is probably one of my favorites if not my favorite but right now its way too buggy for me to use. More so than cm9. Couldn't deal with the bugs Ace is hard at work bringing us more updates and when he finally gets this where he wants it MIUI will more than likely replace cm7 as my daily rom. It's a great ROM in general but I couldn't stay on miui for more than like an hour, personally.
Definitely go into each roms topic and check out the screenshots and videos if there are any. Also look for the working features and known bugs/issues. Honestly I say give them ALL a try and see what best suits you. I only really posted about the newer ones. If I remember correctly molten isn't being updated anymore after 2.3 and I keep forgetting liberty even exists, lol.......
Cyanogenmod all day
I started with Eclipse 1.3 and then went to 2.1 running scripts and about everything else with it. Then when CM9 alpha came out, I had to try it. CM9 alpha works great for me. I needed my camera, so I flashed back to CM7. When the beta version of CM9 rolls around, that's gonna be the ticket!
IMHO- CM7
I can't believe how smooth and FAST my phone is with CM7. The camera works great, very little to no lag at all with anything I have found. There's all kinds of customizations for it. I'm not running any scripts, only CM7 and SD Increase from the market. My phone is fun again and I'm not hesitant to show somebody up with a whyphone like I was before. Try it and see.
Also check out this thread for sure!!

Are you pretty good with computers, tech, etc.? If you want a fast update, just flash CM7 since it is on the same kernel as the version of Eclipse you are on. If you try to update to the latest Eclipse, you have to go through the process of using the SBF to get to stock, updating to 2.3.5 then flash the new version. Its up to you though. CM7 and Eclipse are the most stable ROMs we have at the moment until some bugs get worked out in CM9.
Thanks everyone. I am on Eclipse 2.2.1 as of right now (w/speedy script 7 and other tweaks/apps). Ill probably try CM7 in the future since its already on my sdcard.

Just remember you need to be on 2.3.4 before flashing CM7.
Man I don't know what it is but.....
I used to run Eclipse 2.1 and scripted to the 23498457890345th power maxed out turnaround wing dinger squared. I thought it was as good as it could get. But when I went to CM7, I giggled at what I "thought" I had. Hands down the way to go, until CM9
I would use cm7. Just because its stable and has the best UI in my option and has pretty good performance. or you could wait for cm9 to get more stable with a working camera and better performance.
Liberty 3
Just Rooted and Flashed for the first time.
I went with Eclipse 2.2.1 - because the HDMI support was kind of a deal breaker for me. (Netflix, FPSE, SnesEX, etc. on a big screen!) But I was wondering why none of you mentioned Liberty 3? I haven't tried anything other than Eclipse 2.2.1 so I don't have an educated opinion to share, but other than CM7 it seemed like Liberty 3 and Eclipse were the two other "stable" ROMs in the DEV section.
Is Liberty "bad" or do you guys just not use it, and why?
Also, I flashed what I *thought* was the latest build of Eclipse 2.2.1 (from the official thread) but there are only 5 pull down toggles on my notification panel - I thought there were supposed to be 7? Did I miss something?

I haven't been on eclipse in a while so I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I thought there was an option in settings to set those.
I can't say for sure why nobody mentioned liberty though, it might be because it doesn't offer much compared to eclipse. Also, it was supported for maybe 2 months max while I'm pretty sure nitro is still pushing out updates for the x2(somebody correct me if I'm wrong).

I totally agree with this guy. It all depends on what you want out of your phone. If you can sacrifice the extra cool doohickies I say CM9 all the way cause alpha 4 just came out and it's pretty sweet, working camera too.

I loved cm7 as my first and only rom but my 3g sucks, dolphin force closes, camera is buggy etc I'm going to reflash before jumping to eclipse which I've heard is most stable ...
I loved cm7 but the broken orientation sensor in the kernel killed it for me. I now run eclipse 2.2.1. It was a bugger to get installed. Having to wipe cache at a different point than instructions indicate. And also I have a little touch-screen delay.

I thought there was an AT&T OTA to go to 2.3.7 so I was wondering if there was ever a ROM based off of it, or if anyone ever grabbed the update. I looked around but the only 2.3.7 ROM's I could find were CM7's. I was also thinking of looking through Motorola's server but I've never done that before and couldn't remember the procedure on how to do that.
I'm currently on epinters CM10 which is great but I want fingerswipe/webtop back. I've used Nottachrix's ROM in the past and thought it was really good, but there's no more support for it, so the quest begins. Also I figure if nothing else, if I could get a fruitcake of it, it'd be a good place to start hacking up a ROM.
As far as I know, 2.3.6 is the last official Blur release for the Atrix.
Okay, maybe I was just trippin' then.. Yeah the more I look, I can't find it. My mind is playing tricks on me I guess! Thanks.
