[Q] ROMs, Kernels and Overclocking, how does it work? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all!
I'm a newbie who wants to know some more about ROMs and Kernels.
Here's the thing:
I have the awesome galaxy s2 and I definately want to flash Lite'ning ROM 1.5.
I also read about an easy overclock kernel here (using SetCPU app):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075061
1. Now, what I do not yet understand is: if I flash the necessary OC kernel, will this interfere with the Lite'ning ROM (which has the KF2 kernel)?
2. If so, is there another way to do an easy overclock on the Lite'ning ROM?
I'm looking for CPU speeds of about 1.4 to 1.5 Ghz, just to get that little bit of extra performance.
I also looked at the Tegrak OC, but I don't think I know enough to mess with the voltages... Or how to even do that
3. So, how do ROMs and Kernels work (in short)? Can I flash any Kernel on any ROM?
4. And can you install multiple Kernels working next to eachother? Or will some Kernels interfere with eachother?
I searched the forums for good explanations, but thusfar haven't found any.
Sorry for being a noob! I'm really trying to read up, but it's more difficult than I had expected.
Some Noob-Proof explanation would be much appreciated!
Numbered the questions I have at the moment
Thank you!

I cant answer all your questions but i'll do my best
2) have a look at tekrak overclock and this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14973796&postcount=531 the first part is about undervolting which is great and the last section is about what voltage to overclock your galaxy s2 at
Basically, the voltage is how much energy your battery puts through the system, including gpu and cpu, so if you overclock you need more energy and dont worry about crashing, it just reboots and asks you if you want the previous settings and you say no (write down your previous settings though) and then lower the voltage and try again and so on
3) roms are basically modified versions of android and kernels can be flashed on most roms, im not sure about the official ones
Thats all i know about so i hope it helped you
PM me if you want some help with undervolting or overclocking, i dont tend to overclock as i dont see the point, my phones already so fast

Thank you!
That Naphtaline guide about voltages seems really helpful
I do need the Tegrak Ultimate app to set all the voltages right?
The free one doesn't seem to include that.
I'll have a look into it anyway.
And I recall that I do not need to flash another kernel if I use this Tegrak OC right?
Almost sure I read that somewhere in the Lite'ning ROM thread.
Appreciate the help!

I think the free one includes voltages just no settings for the gpu, but i could be wrong
Not sure about the Tegrak kernel, but no harm in it
No problem, just pm me if anything goes wrong or you have some questions

yeah that Naphtaline guide is just classy keep up the gud work guyz

[Q] Setcpu

I need help trying to configure setcpu on my vibrant running superdragonmodz kernel. I'm tryin to get the best performence out of it
If Im not mistaken, Eco, the kernel developer stated many times that you don't need any app to adjust frequencies/voltages to his kernel as it's already been configured and will be run automatically with the kernel. So in short, you don't need it and even if you do you should really be posting this on the kernel's thread as to each kernel it's own..
okay i was just making sure..and i would post on the kernel thread but i can't i need 10 posts

overlock to 1400 ghz

i have the 3g version and i rooted it with cwm recovery
now i need to overlock it !! where can i find the suitable kernel ?!?!
if you figure out how to overclock to "1400ghz" without incinerating yourself, please let us know. That sounds rad.
And for the overclocking kernel (which is limited to 1400mhz): There's only one kernel for our tabs--- Pershoot's. Most of the custom ROMs use it. Try either task14 (you'll need setCPU to overclock) or Romann's ICS kang milestone 4 (overclock options in the settings menu).
I Lol'd at the 1400ghz, Best **** ever.
Maybe you would like to "Search" in the Development section? This is a forums section, not room service..

question about extracting goverenor

hi i am using superatmos kernal v3.0 and i am loving it,mainly because it runs at 1200mhz than the capped speed.so my question is that is it possible to extract the governors from lucifr kernal 1.21 and put on it to superatmos v3.0
It's not as simple as that. Some governors won't work with certain kernels without init.d scripts. And if you don't know what they are, you'd best not start messing around with stuff like that.
What you might be able do would be to modify an existing governor in the new kernel to mimic the one you want from the old kernel. But to do that it's going to take a lot of learning & reading on your part.
This thread is a good start.

How do I overclock on the my phone..?

I have to overclock speeds over my phone I want.
Is only able to custom rom?
uhmmmmm i no understand.....lol
but NO its not the Rom its the kernel that allows OC/UV
So if want OverClock, Kernel Flash on phone that support. must Root
( i tried to type that so you would understand it )
Good luck bruh.
indeed flash a custom kernel you have. (sounds a bit like Yoda..)
In short - if you need to ask, then you shouldn't be doing it. You need to read up otherwise you'll come back in the future, saying you've fried your phone.
Like the others said though, you need a custom kernel that supports overclocking.
I wouldn't bother, it's a fast enough phone without the need to overclock it.
Flash a kernel that you can overclock like for instance Siyah kernel. Don`t overdo it though, 1600 Mhz is more than enough to get good performance and keep good battery life. Read the dev`s thread before you overclock to gather info and xperiences from other users.
To me he sounds like he wants 2 clocks on his phone. You need to add dual clock widget
Hi,
Yes, like said above you need a custom kernel wich allow overclocking... but you also need an app for set your CPU freq as you want... if I remember right even with a custom kernel, the CPU freq is the stock CPU freq after flashing (I mean no kernel with directly a 1.6 Ghz CPU freq, it's to the user to set the CPU freq).
Francisco's kernel has its own application, gokhanmoral's kernel has Extweaks, simone201's kernel has also an app, etc...
Or you can use a "generic" app like SetCpu, System Tuner, CPU Master, No frills, etc, etc...
Before flashing a new kernel read, read and read the dev section and the different method of flash, the different kernel threads...

[Q] Hoe to OC LWW with Locked bootloader?

Hello people, i bought a Sony Live with Walkman, but my Provider locked the bootlader, so i can't unlock it... And i was thinking if is there any way or some module to OverClock the CPU.. 'cause i've been searching a lot and i found only Kernels that make possible to OC the phone.. maybe i missed some thread where the info i need is... soo sorry for my english i'm from Argentina!
Nope, you can only overclock with custom kernels, and for that you need to unlock your bootloader, sorry :/
Overclocking is entirely dependent on the kernel . In stock Sony kernel you are not allowed to go past 1 GHz but you can underclock in stock kernel to increase stand by if you aren't a heavy user . To overclock it's always possible with a custom kernel but again nobody will advise you to overclock because it'll probably reduce your CPU's life , I've even seen people entirely busting their CPU by overclocking without prior knowledge. So be careful . You need a custom kernel with overclock support, to install a custom kernel you need a unlocked bootloader.
hit thanks if I've helped!
sent from my smultron
The pros vs cons in OC the cpu on a mobile phone are an depreciable increase of performance vs an shorter cpu life, I used to use my older x10mini pro with OC all in all the general user experience doesn't improve so much to risk the life of the phone.
