[Q] Bamf 3.0 RC3 Wifi sleeping - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just installed this ROM yesterday, came from Liquid gingersense 1.2
I did the 3x Wipe data/cache/dalvik/batt stats
When I'm on Wifi and when my phone goes to sleep, background data is not working. When I wake the phone up, I see the Wifi symbol go completely gray and then back to normal. I'm not getting emails when the phone is sleeping and on Wifi. Did not have this issue with Liquid Gingersense.
any ideas? My Wifi sleep policy is set to never. I've set my email to sync via Push during peak and non peak hours.
TIA

Bump. I've been having the same issue as well. It could be kernel related as HTC has not released the source code yet for GB. But that's just my guess.

well i tried the Gingeritis ROM and wifi sleep mode does not block data....for some reason the BAMF ROMS on my phone causes this issue

Which kernel are you using? I've seen this happen to lean 3.3.4, but not lean 3.01
Edit: I was ok for a bit on 3.01, but it's happening again. Oh well, I guess I'm keeping 3g on all the time now.

Wifi sleeping when screen is off
I have the same issue that everyone else reports. I've seen it on BAMF 3.0 RC3 as well as 2.1 Gingerremix. I'm not sure, but I'm thinking it's kernel related since I never had the issue on 2.0 remix betas and I believe the kernel changed from the 2.0 betas to the 2.1. Can anyone confirm? I'm hoping it's not lose-lose since only the last few kernel releases fix the slow charge bug....

[Q] WiFi Issues with BAMF GingerRemix

So, I saw this issue posted a few pages back, but never saw anyone who had a real solution. A couple days ago, while still on GingerRemix b5 and Imo's 3.0.1 kernel, I started seeing some weird WiFi behavior. I would unlock the device, and notice that there was a sync error with my Exchange account. The wireless status icon would briefly show no bars, and then refresh. Once this happens, my Exchange would sync, and GMails, and other notifications would all catch up. It seems very spotty when this happens, as sometimes the device is locked for 30 minutes or so and things will sync, other times, after 15 minutes or so I notice the issue.
I have confirmed this on multiple wireless networks (secure and unsecure). I have since upgraded to GingerRemix b6, and even tried the DreamKernel, but the same issue is still occuring. My WiFi policy is set to Never sleep. I know someone else in the forum has seen this issue, and I was just wondering if anyone knows of a fix. This is really the only major issue I'm having right now.
To troubleshoot, I ran a ping from my PC to my phone. I noticed that when the screen went off, a few seconds later I would begin to get "Request Timed Out" for the ping. A minute or 2 after that I start getting a few responses of "Destination Host Unreachable." A few minutes after that, I ONLY get "Destination Host Unreachable". What is strange, is if I am plugged into a charger, I consistently get successful pings, even if the screen is off. Taking the typical next step, I wiped data, cache, dalvik twice and reinstalled the ROM. Booted up, and before even restoring apps or anything I connected to WiFi... The issue is still exactly the same.
Can someone else on this ROM run a nonstop ping (-t on Windows) on their WiFi connected, unplugged phone. I'm curious if I'm the only one seeing this behavior? If so, I'm going to assume it's a possible hardware issue that has developed. This isn't a dealbreaker as I can run on 3G/4G fine, but I would really like WiFi to work properly again.
Any help/results would be greatly appreciated!
Not sure if you ever found a solution but I have been having similar problems. I installed Bamf GB remix 2.1. I started out with the mr2 radio. After noticing the problem, I started trying different kernels, first the lean, then the dream. The problem persisted. I flashed the mr2.5 radio and still had the issue. Finally, I went into advanced wifi settings after reading a post from the BAMF 2.0 thread (after your post) that suggested "best wifi performance." I turned it on and the issue is still happening. I'd be very interested in a fix for this, too.
My gut tells me that when the official GB comes next week, there will be ROMs galore that will make it a non-issue. In the meantime, I guess I'm stuck with using 3g when I have the phone off.
Just tried flashing gingerbean to see if that solved the problem and it didn't. It is still there. It's got to be something to do with the kernel. I'm going to research kernels and see if anyone else is experiencing this issue.
This just happened to me too when I installed GBRemix 2.1. I'm currently using the lean 3.3.4. I've set my wifi to always stay on, but it keeps on flickering which makes me think it's causing my phone to drain faster than usual.
I've tried all the remix versions and my battery life during standby is normally not this bad.

Gingerbread WIFI!!!???

FIXED: check out post #17
I didn't think posting this in each GB Rom thread and kernel thread would be appropriate so I'm starting here. Thanks in advance for any feedback!
Okay......After doing countless and wasted hours of searching and coming up empty handed, why is it that only a few of us are having the WIFI issue on the Gingerbread ROMs? It doesn't matter which ROM I use as soon as the screen cuts off, BAM, no WIFI or 3G data. And yes WIFI sleep policy is set to never and I've tried turning on Better WIFI performance and I've even tried every kernal out there, nothing works. FROYO ROMs are working fine so it's got to be either the Gingerbread ROMs or the Kernels.
Either way I'm okay with the issue not working (yet) and I understand that HTC hasn't released the source for the GB Kernel yet. All I would like is some clarification from the people that build these ROMs and Kernels that the WIFI is not working yet. I understand if you're in a 4G area, after all 4G is much faster than the WIFI anyway but for those of us not in a 4G area yet WIFI is king when at home or at work. So if the developers are using 4G constantly I understand the WIFI neglect, but I really don't think it's the developers. These guys are too smart to let something like that slide by! Can someone shed some light on the issue? Thanks again in advance!
This is not an issue with the leaked GB roms themselves or the latest kernels, because the wifi is working great for most people.
It is going to be helpful if you list which rom, kernel, and radio you are using. I did have a similar problem one time, my wifi was going to sleep when the screen turned off and went idle.
It had been working fine but I tried to take a shortcut and reflash the rom without wiping data because it was the same rom. After attempting that which was a bad idea but more of an experiment/learning session for me, I had exactly the problem that you stated.
After wiping my phone properly and flashing the rom, the problem was gone.
I have been running BAMF sence 3.0 with the MR2 radio. I tried MR2.5 and had some different small issues, MR2 has been working Great. Currently with BAMF 3.0 RC 3, the MR2 rom and the latest dreamKernel, everything is running perfectly, at least everything I use or thought of using.
The background data is extremely important for me because I communicate exclusively with my girlfriends using IM services such as gtalk with Trillian. So I wouldn't be able to run gingerbread if it wasn't working REALLY good.
Here's the thread that I use often as a resource. It discusses some issues similar to what you are dealing with, and is update very regularly
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086518
I'm having an identical issue to the OP. Running BAMF GingerREMIX 2.1, Imoseyon's 3.3.8GBTest+ , MR2 radio.
Wifi just disconnects when screen is off. When I turn the screen on, i can see the wifi indicator is all black (similar to no bars). Once it's on for a second or two, it lights up again, and I get whatever notifications I missed due to no data(email, etc).
Ive done the 3x data, cache, and dalvik wipe before flashing the ROM and before flashing the Kernel. It's absolutely DESTROYING my battery life. Since noticing the problem, i've re-wiped and re-flashed everything, didn't help.
Thanks for the response...I'm stumped then because I have tried every combination of kernal/ROM that is available out of the Gingerbread leaks. I recently last night tried BAMF Sense 3.0 RC3 and GINGERTH3ORY V4.5.1 and BAMF 2.1 Remix again along with both MR2 and MR2.5 radios. Nothing worked so I went back to the reliable Perfect Storm 1.5 ROM and left my radio at MR2.5
Any suggestions? Thanks for the help!

I'm having no issues with gingeritis 1.0 (Not the 3D Alpha), and lean kernel 3.4.0. Did you try those?

I did try the gingeritis 1.0 3D with dreamkernel but not lean. Maybe I'll give that a shot this evening but I'm not holding my breath...lol I've tried almost everything and known combinations that are working for others and all the wipes I can muster, nothing is working.
Okay I've been trying Gingeritis 1.0 3d with the lean kernel for a few hours hours now. When my screen turns off I will receive emails for a few minutes but then I stop receiving them until I wake the the phone up. Once i wake the phone up i start receiving messages likevi just turned it on from a good nights sleep. Does anyone know what's going on?

I've actually had this problem also ever since i moved to the Gingerbread. When the screen turns off and i turn it back off after awhile, the WiFi seems like it was sleeping the entire time. I get all my notifications when i turn the screen back on. And i do believe this has been killing my battery life a bit. I have wiped before i flashed. I tried it with the original GB radio/MR2/MR2.5. I've flash different kernels. Wifi sleep is set to never.
Note: I tried running an app such as Pandora on while the screen was off and only in situations like this the WiFi doesn't have the problem.
tethering is ****ed up as well in gb, screen off, no tether, screen on and everything is okay. personally i think that something is ****ed up at the kernel, i switched back to froyo and problems went away.
For the record.....if I set wifi sleep policy to never when plugged in I still receive notifications instantly but it's through 3G because when I wake the phone 3g is active instead of wifi.

This is something I've brought up before too, but nobody addresses it because there probably isn't an answer about a whether it's the kernel or rom. I've just come to terms that I can't use wifi. For those who are suggesting we didn't clear data appropriately, that's not the issue. Most of us who have this wifi problem have been determined enough to try multiple clean installs to get to the bottom of this issue.

Shall I throw another quirk into our problem?............... I flashed CM7.1 RC1 early this morning. This is the best ROM I've put on my TBolt yet. WIFI seems to be working flawlessly except for right after the initial install it wouldn't download anything, through browser or even open the market. After a reboot, I'm going strong. I am receiving messages and data when phone's screen is off. I'm beginning to think that it might be a Sense 3.0 problem....any thoughts from the peanut gallery?
The problem with GB is that it is not official. The ROM is not final (or has been ported from a different phone), kernel is not final, and neither is the radio. We shouldn't be surprised that a lot of features don't work properly. Now cyanogen do their own Roms and kernels basically from scratch, and maybe that is why it's working. GB was fun to have, but i just switched to Froyo for faster 4g speeds, ability to tether properly and better battery life. I'll wait for the proper GB before switching again.
Yeah not Gingeritis 3d but the normal version.... I've noticed also that it seems settings don't change, Like I have turned off Haptic feedback yet still get it when i type on the keyboard, and still get weather sounds with the sounds turned off. This is every time I flash even with 5 wipes. Settings don't seem to stick.

For the keyboard not turning off haptic feedback, you have to go to the settings in the keyboard to disable it. Settings->Language and Keyboard->Touch Input->Text Input->Uncheck Vibrate While Typing.
WI FI Alternative
And I thought I was the only one having problems with wifi tether on gingeritis 3D. I posted a question in a different forum but no one answered me. So after trying different versions of wireless tether I found one that is working perfectly for me. It is wireless tether v2.0.5. I've been using it for 2 days with no issues and phone screen doesn't have to be on. Now, this may not work for everybody, like I said I tried different versions until I found the right one.
Here is the link: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I hope this helps some of you.
Okay.......!!!!!!!! Thanks to the folks over at theMikMik.com (akaGingeritis ROMs) forums I now have working WiFi with the Gingeritis ROMs. Just download Advanced WiFi Lock from the Marketplace and set it up and you're good to go! Now that wasn't hard was it guys/gals? I've been looking for an answer for so long I can't even remember when I started....oh wait it was the first day that Gingerbread were available by these great developers!!!! Sorry, I didn't mean to vent, I'm not mad just very excited that now I can enjoy these Gingerbread ROMs. So everyone else that's having problems with the WiFi staying connected, download Advanced WiFi Lock from the Marketplace and get your Ginger on!
So is that the free version, or the paid version? You're finding that your WiFi now says connected even if the phone is sleeping? To do some more testing, I fully charged my phone, turned on my WiFi, and connected to my home wireless for 5 hours, just let the phone sit. Used 50% of my battery. Next day, same thing, but had WiFi off, 4g on. 5 hours later, used 15% of battery. Pretty sucky that I can't use my TB on my own home network.

I'm using the free version as the paid doesn't offer any extra features I needed. I left my phone connected to WiFi all night idle, about 7.5 hours, and only used 13% of battery and received all messages. I can't test on 4G so please provide feedback for others.

Not so lucky. Downloaded and installed advanced WiFi lock. Connected to my home wireless and see the same exact results. WiFi just sucking battery. Still draining at about 10% an hour on WiFi and about 3% an hour on 4g. I'm so confused over this, how is WiFi draining battery more than 4g? Phone isn't even usable on WiFi. Checking battery usage stats as noticed that the phone is constantly awake when WiFi is on.

1.2 bootloader sleep of death

So after updating to the 1.2 bootloader and running a couple of different honeycomb roms i found that my gtab was not waking from sleep and had to be full restarted after a couple of mins with the screen off.
I thought it may be because of honeycomb so i recently switched to CM7 for BL1.2. However I am still having the same problem.
The only solution i found when i was running honeycomb, is to run a wifi lock app which keeps the wifi active and prevents the tab from going to sleep, but i can still turn off the screen. However this is terrible for my battery so i really want to find a proper solution to the problem.
On the 1.1 bootloader i ran the stock rom, TNT lite, CM7, Vegantab, Vegantab Ginger. and had no problem with any of them.
I have tried the following to fix the problem since updating to BL1.2:
wiping data/cache/dalvik
re-partitioning storage
NVFlashing
turning off wifi completely
turning off wifi and turning on bluetooth
using volume buttons to wake
adjusting CPU settings to lower and raise CPU speed when screen is off
lowering and raising voltage
leaving power plugged in vs. running on battery only.
Any other suggestions are very much welcome. I want to fix this problem but still be able to run 1.2 and have the latest best roms
bump anyone?
Some people report that Fancy Widgets causes sleep of death. My tablet has the sleep of death only when charging on the dock, Vegan 5.1.1 on BL 1.1.
Any chance you bought a dock or started using Fancy Widgets around the same time you switched to BL 1.2?
My computer is flaking out while installing updates, sorry if this is a double post.

nope. no fancy widgets and no other docks. Even on a total clean install with nothing else installed it will go into SOD
I run GtabComb 3.3 on the 1.2 bootloader and i don't have the SOD. mine goes to sleep and i can wake it up everytime. so i don't think it's the 1.2 bootloader unless the creator of GtabComb figured out how to fix it.
Sleep of Death, HC 3.3 BL 1.2
Just echoing the first note, and confirming that I have the same combination (HC 3.3, BL1.2) with no extras, clean install, and continue to bump into Sleep of Death. Sort of a nuisance. Tried most of the items listed in thread #1, but still no success.
So, in reply to the previos comment, I return to Bootload version 1.2 as the culprit, and not Honeycomb 3.3. Maybe some interesting combination? Will review the files and try to follow-up with a note.
Thank you.
Well that sucks I guess but I can assure you after wiping my device as I normally do when switching roms, all I did was load GtabComb 3.3, wiped data, wiped cache, wiped davalik and reboot. No sleep of death.... EVER nothing wrong with the 1.2 bootloader here
im thinking its just a random problem with a select few devices. If everyone had this issue with BL1.2 im sure we would have heard about it.
but from what i can tell a select few devices had SOD with 1.1 and some have had issues only with BL1.2 like myself
It could just be the hardware. I have had the SOD (or it just rebooting) since day 1 across different ROMs, bootloaders, and stock.
i will say i had the SOD when i was using CM7 on the 1.2 bootloader but when i switched to GtabComb it stopped. i also don't thing i had it when i was on Flashback either. it was just CM7

[HELP] F4 Phantom Kernel Oddity

I had a strange problem. I just happened to open preware just to poke around today a few minutes ago and saw the phantom kernel and got excited and uninstalled my other kernel and rebooted to install this one. All went well for the first install. then as i was browsing preware it refreshed and i saw there was a kernel update, so i hit update. after it rebooted, i cant seem to enable or disable wifi. if i uninstall the kernel its fine, but if i reinstall it, the same problem comes back its really weird. any ideas?
I am having the exact same issue. I took the same path as well upgrading F4. Hopefully WI comes out with another update to fix this.
A reboot allows you to re-enabled wifi, but this is a poor work around.
F15C will do until the bug is fixed.
That is why you wait until it goes out of beta.

What's the fun in that? Anywho, sucks that the kernel doesn't dig your wifi. Been running it all day at 1.8 rather stably, with battery actually doing fairly well.

I think you're on the wrong forum there dude. It says developers in the url - beta is where we live.
I hadn't noticed the WiFi oddity but tried it and sure enough. The prior F15 kernels had WiFi problems for me so I stopped using them. Seems that unixpsycho doesn't think much of people using WiFi.
Did you guys try the 1.8+ GHz speeds? My pad crashed at that speed - had to learn how to reboot using the hard buttons lol.
I have had mine lose WiFi 2x already and was unable to turn it back on w/o reboot
there'a an update 3.0.2-46. Did that helped?
My touchpad is completely stable using F4 at 1.8
Browsermark for me has resulted in scores around 38k with conservative governor, 54k with ondemand, and 74k with performance.
Battery drain seems to be only slightly worse than on F15c despite having both cores running at all times.
I tried the F4 Phantom recently and while it seemed promising at first, the second CPU always showed as N/A after I would wake it from sleep. I've tried uninstalling, going back to default settings, and reinstalling F4 and had these same results. I'm running warthog now and I don't experience the 'N/A' anymore and running stable so far.
Anyone else get the 'N/A' using the latest F4 Kernel (3.0.2-46)? Btw, I've been using it at 1.7Ghz.
I gave F4 a try. Also got wifi problem after a few hrs. Going back to warthog.
I don't have any problem with it. My WIFI works fine.
I upgraded from f15 this evening. Its noticeably faster on f4 with both cores running. Govnah suggests the battery is doing fine but I've lost about 5% in the last 30mins just browsing XDA... Doesn't sound quite right?
Wireless has been absolutely fine too.
edit: hour and a half later and govnah is showing 2nd core as N/A. Reinstalled but getting the same thing. Tablet seems just as fast though which is odd.
I have the same problem with F4 with all the profiles I saved, the second core says N/A. It did show the second core running when I installed it last night. I tried the 1.8, seems faster, but rebooted everytime when while loading sims social on facebook lol.
Edit: Weird thing, I did a device restart, and now the second core is showing. However, the device start didn't work this morning.
Same here. After about 30mins, my 2nd core shows as N/A. I do agree it does seem to keep its speed. Maybe its something with govnah?
I highly doubt it has anything to do with govnah. It is the kernel causing the issue. Have been running the earthly kernel and have had no issues at 1.7.
after latest update I have had NO problems

[Q] Maybe a potential fix for SOD(sleep of death)?!?!

Hi Guys,
Im no Genius when it comes to android, but I have done my fair share of programming before, but my SOD are killing me and a last resort is a warranty exchange as I cannot be without a phone.
So far I have been getting SOD about 5 times a day if not more, and I am one for tinkering with gadgets until i break or crash it, fix it and doing it all over again.
But anyway back on topic
I have noticed this in the build.prop
" persist.ril.mux.sleep=2 "
And so I wondered if this is causing my SOD, does anyone have any ideas regarding its uses?
Findings (as of 2155)
In my testing thus far I have changed it to "persist.ril.mux.sleep=1" using phone leaving it for an hour doing it over just for fun, And I have been SOD for 5 hours straight and haven't had any SOD or adverse battery drain
I mean this may not be the cause of the SOD for me, or anybody but I am up for trying just about anything
What is SOD?

Sorry, Sleep Of Death
I have SOD here too. To me it's only happens when I turned off a data connection (3G or wifi).
I use LoadMonitor app as a workaround for a while, with success.
At now I'm using Neutrino 2.5 CM7 ROM with success too. I think it's more a blur rom problem than cm7 one.
Let us know about your progress.
So if you disable load manager you would get SOD?
I am making a script to update a few things so far no SOD for me, after a few tweaks
What settings are you using on load manager ?
Any info you can give me will help in me tracking down some of the errors and temporary fixes people are using to avoid the dreaded issue
Oh, THAT's what that was!
I forgot to turn the wifi back on a few nights ago when I said "Hey, let's watch some movies on netflix with my super-duper mirroring-abled phone!" So an hour into it, LBE Privacy warns me I'm about to max out my data, and I go turn the damn wifi back on but turned OFF the 3G.
Then last night I go to wake up my phone and the screen is "black but on", & took a couple of tries to wake it. I'm on Nottachtrix.

I'm a bit confused here. I don't know what "load manager" is.
What a sad is I used LoadMonitor app (from market) as a workaround.
LoadMonitor just monitor taks that are running in your device. But it have an option that claims to prevent device deep sleep. So, when I checked this option my device don't get SOD.
It's a workaround, as I sad, and I don't know how LoadMonitor do that.
What is load manager?
Thanks
I had a similar issue, I installed SetCPU and set my minimum speed to ~456(faux 1.45 Kernel).
Never had the problem since.

I tried some roms and the only one I hadn't random reboots was jokersax11 alpha7 (ICI), now I'm on beta 0.2.0 and had reboots.
I'm having the same problem. I've tried 3 different ROMs. I used Nottachtrix, following the directions to the letter with reboots and hard locks. Recently I flashed back to 4.5.91 (w/pudding) and I was having the same issues. I noticed that on the hard locks, my phone appeared to be warm, so I used SetCPU at 216MHz and still had hard locks and random reboots. I've not set the lowest setting at 301 and so far I haven't had any reboots, but its only been about 5 hours. But I was having them at least once every few hours.
BTW - I also noticed that I only had the freezes and hard locks when the phone was running on the battery. I rarely had problems when the phone was on the dock or USB charger, however, I did have reboots when it was on the wall charger.
Another program you can try is call 'Wake Lock' available from the marketplace. I haven't used it yet, I'm still experimenting with load monitor.
Wake lock has a few different options and has some really good review.
I confirmed that Neutrino 2.5 CM7 Rom works great without reboots.
That's a patch you need to apply to correct a battery drain problem of the original version. Notorious544d are working in a 2.6 version including that patch.
To me it's working like a charm. I'm testing for two days but, of course, everyone needs to test it in your own device.
PS: Follow this instructions to install a battery drain patch in Neutrino 2.5 (or wait for a 2.6 version):

Atrix SOD & Random reboots related to Wifi?
Does anyone know if the Atrix SOD & Random reboots are related to WiFi. I've had my wifi off all day and I've had no crashes.
I'm going to run it for a few more days without Wifi and see what happens.
I don't know about other guys, but wifi and 3G was the cause of my Atrix SOD and reboot problems.
Solved it using Neutrino Rom CM7 based.
See you!
Still working on my SOD issue, but recently, I disabled most power options, turned off wifi, rebooted and I've been running for 2 days with no crashes. After day 3, I'm going to turn wifi back on reboot and see what happens.
Update 1
After 3 days with wifi disabled, I've had no crashes, no freezes or random reboots. I'm going to enable wifi again and see what happens.
Update 2
After turning enabling my wifi and using it briefly then turning it back off, I had a random reboot later that evening.
The more I used my wifi, the more frequent my crashes became.
Interesting side note
I can enable all my radios when plugged into the desktop charger and I won't experience any crashes, however, if plugged into to the AC charger, I've had reboots and freezes.
