I've been searching but havent found a conclusive answer yet. Does installing your own custom ROM to the Thunderbolt unlock access to the built in Sense tether/hotspot features which is ordinarily free? It seems like the only way they can charge you right now is because they actually put a modified tether/hotspot app in there which looks just like HTC's version, but initiates a charge if you try to use it.

Once you're rooted and have obtained S-OFF, you can download a root-only Market app that will tether your device. I only know of one, called Open Garden, but if you search Wifi tether in the Market, most of the free tether apps are for root users and will do exactly what you're looking to do. Best of luck!
Mobile Hotspot is a Verizon app. If that is on a phone no matter the rom you will have to pay to use it. Recently all other tether apps have been taken off of the market so it may be hard to find one. I found an old tether app that I think may be able to tether for you but I haven't tried it personally

From what I have seen no. They have the ability to use the tethering that is built in but it is just the free trial from VzW as far as I could tell. Just turn on airplane mode and then turn wifi on and go to market and download wireless tether. Once it downloads turn airplane mode off and you can tether for free.
Edit: What I was talking about is the same app flyodd just linked to. You can do my method to find it in the market if you don't want to sideload it.
Thanks guys. I was used to all the HD2 roms including WiFi hotspot/tether mode through Sense 2.0. It looks like HTC always built a custom UI for it or something, I guess VZW made them remove it for their network so no such native app exists, hence the need to use other 3rd party apps.

Hey guys. I made a mistake, here is what happened. I had ROOTed my phone a while ago and downloaded Barnacle. It was working flawlessly. My phone started acting up so i had thought to exchange the phone for another one, so i unrooted it and removed all the rooted apps i had on it. I didnt exchange the phone because it isnt giving me random reboots and the battery isnt getting really really hot when what i think its charging but it really isnt. I decided to keep it obviously and i just rooted right now. I go to download Barnacle from the market site and i am not allowed to click on my device that i have listed because "this app isnt allowed by my carrier" or something along those lines. Is there a way i can still get this app??
Thanks in advanced
From market, search and install "Market Enabler". Use that to change your market region to Telstra (Australia). Now you can search in market for Barnacle and be able download/install it. After that, revert back to your original market region with market enabler.
Thank you VERY much sir. Worked perfect. So what else can i do with this Market Enabler app?
Glad that it worked
I have no idea what else you can do with it since this was the only reason I used that for myself. Basically if AT&T removes a particular program from their market, you can search for other providers' market with this app and install the program.

Just wanted to throw this out there. With a lot of apps made for rooted phones you can usually download the apk right from their respective websites onto your phone and use the built in file manager to install them. That's how I got Barnacle anyways.

Well, here's the thing. If it's not already listed as a compatible app for your phone than it won't link to the market regardless. It would work just as well to check the website probably once a month for updates, just as you would have to do with the market enabler. But if you use the website, you could get your hands on some beta versions ahead of time.

Well, I'm not entirely sure if you can just switch providers to enable updates through the market but I would assume it would still need to be done manually.
I just loaded it from the Barnacle site, which worked well...

Anyone using this app got a letter or text from ATT?

We Fixed This. Use The WiFi Tether App Attached.
Now, before anyone confuses this with AT&T Smart Wifi on the market, I'm not asking for that (that app is garbage in my opinion.)
Now, to the task at hand...
Stock Samsung ROMs have something called AT&T Hotspot Manager embedded into the Wifi settings, which allow the automatic sign in of AT&T hotspots around the country without opening a browser to sign into the network.
I'm using CM9 nightlies at the moment, and upon installing the hotspot manager is not packaged with the nightlies. Not an issue regarding CM9, but I was wondering is there a download package or zip that I can install via CWM or any other method to regain this automatic sign in capability? I'm at a Starbucks and Barnes and Noble a lot, and found this aspect of the phone to be very useful.
Appreciate the timely replies
I'm curious about this too, I've settled in to AOKP after jumping around on ICS roms for a month or so and I just realized I'm not getting my hotspots anymore
I'll sniff around and edit this if I find anything useful, I'm not sure what exactly the hotspot manager was and why we wouldn't be able to just enter the settings for the hotspot into a standard wifi connection
Edit: So el goog wasn't very helpful, all I was able to find was a few similar posts to this one with no remedy. I went to my Titanium Backup and searched through my backed up apps knowing that the manager had to be in there somewhere because I'd used some of the ROM's based off of the stock i777 and found something called "At&t Hot Spots." I restored it to my current ROM and I'll test it at Mickey D's at lunch.
Don't. It's a terrible app.
Looking over your shoulder...
Well restoring the app seems to have had no effect, it still requires me to log in to the wifi. I'm not sure why everyone says it was a terrible app, before I rooted my battery life was just fine with it running, even if I neglected to turn off wifi

First off, I do agree. But what this thread is concerning is that it's not an app. Rather, it was an embedded feature in the stock ROM of this phone, checked off in the wi-fi settings.
Since it's not an app, one cannot readily download it off the market. So it must be a package. From the results of this thread though, I guess a package like this doesn't exist..?
Here's the file: AT&T Hotspots 0.955
This is extracted from a UCKH1 stock ROM. Hopefully it works for you.

That makes about as much sense as having to type in your WEP password each time you log into your home network. Net battery life would be about equal to not having the app, as it takes screen on time (BIGGER battery suck) to go though all the steps necessary to login without this app.

I had the earlier version installed through my Titanium backups. I installed the one posted on this thread and I saw that the app was upgraded. (Additionally, the at&t hotspots icon vanished from the app drawer, I could see that it was running though).
However, it doesn't seem to connect automagically to attwifi. Any clues?

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that FoxFi doesn't seem to work on a stock DNA. I installed the latest version of FoxFi as well as the add-on, but when activated I get a message saying that I need to have a tethering plan, and to call 611 to set it up.
Also, FoxFi isn't 100% free anymore, it has a usage limit before you need to close and restart it. The full app costs $6.97.
Hopefully once we get root we can get a root-based wireless tethering app to work.

Quick USB Tether works on Jelly Bean for the usb tether part on different hardware (and it's free!).
For wifi, you'll need root and sqllite for potentially an "entitlement" hack. All speculation since I don't have this phone, but the common denominator is Jelly Bean.
BTW OP, Foxfi says that their stuff doesn't work in Jelly Bean right in the description!

It just worked. I'm guessing you're on a Verizon unlimited plan and that is why it is nagging you.
yall do realize that unless you are an unlimited plan you can just use verizons hotspot app
So you have tethering included? Why not just use the stock hot spot app then? This is for people that don't have a tethering plan.

I'd gone through the same thing, so usedto my tbolt needing a outside app.
I installed foxfi (and addon) and it worked ok, but I'm on a ShareEverything plan (it works for me and saved me $40/mo)
I called vZ and confirmed I'd not need this any longer and could use the stock app to any device, but data is accumulative
I suspect there maybe some vpn and other features some 3rd party tethering apps might allow that would be useful for some.
Let's clarify:
Unlimited data: won't work, possibly with entitlement database hack and root
Shared data: It should work stock (not foxfi).
Jelly Bean is a little different than ICS. Foxfi's description even says it won't work under Jelly Bean.
The Tether Hack and Tether hack with WiFi notification should work on stock rooted and stock de-odex I545VRUAMDK based ROMS.
If your rocking a custom ROM check with your ROM dev for changes to framework-res.apk BEFORE flashing this.
The other two mods, Remove E911 Icons, and disable Ongoing WiFi Noticiation NEED a de-odex ROM.
The orginal "Tether Hack doesnt always kill the WiFi Notification so I rebuilt the mods using a different method.
EDIT: One of the mods were removed because it caused GPS Issues.

Thanks for posting this, both of the mods work great.
Just a quick question. With regards to the Tether Hack, how does this compare to apps like pdanet which bypass the subscription check but still seem to use the stock Wifi Hotspot? I don't know what exactly is happening behind the scenes with these other apps, if they do anything other than bypass the check. As an unlimited data user, is it "safer" to use pdanet or the other apps, or are you really just doing the same thing they provide without the need for another app?
Thanks again.

It hacks the tether feature samsung put in the ROM to call upon another app to verify the subscription.
So instead of
1. Tether app start
2. Call App to check subscription
3. Return results to tether app
4. Tether... Or not Tether...
It goes...
1. Start tether app
4. Tether.
Steps 2 and 3 are removed from the framework of the ROM
Yes on USB and if I wasnt so damned lazy I could even do Bluetooth... But this is good enough for 99.99% of the people. Who the hell uses Bluetooth anyways... Damn kids and there fads

These apps are using something momentary (IE: The hack has to happen every time you push the *Big Friendly Button*) to bypass the check; I'm not sure what and I haven't had the opportunity/need to go digging into the how. I use Widgetsoid and it does the same thing.
This hack is permanent; it happens when you flash and doesn't require anything afterward. It allows you to use the included app on the phone without having to download any free apps that might have limits or ads and there's no paid version (FoxFi, for example). It means there are less "moving parts" involved, and theoretically, there are fewer things that could go wrong.
As for is one "safer" than the other...I'll assume you mean any less likely to get you in trouble...and the answer is no. They're achieving the same thing through different methods; one's just a bit "cleaner" than the others.
EDIT: Didn't see Scott's post...damn pages. Still relevant, I think.

I'm having issues running the two hacks together as it seems some stuff cancels one another out. Could you possibly help and talk with him (RWC95) about merging your two hacks together? That'd be great

I have no desire to remove that icon. If someone needs my help with something (which rwc95 does not, as I have worked on stuff with him before, he knows what he is doing) they can reach out to me.

Right this is just a resource hack. Framework-res does not have any smali code and subsequently no dex or odex files.
Which app are you using to tether?
Hi Scott,
Thanks for developing the Clean Rom!
I've used your clean rom on the S3 and the S4 and I must admit it's some good stuff you've developed.
I've installed this tether hack but after reading this thread, I'm not clear on what app you are using to tether?
Is it the mobile hotspot app from the Big Red?
Or does Samsung have their own separate tethering app?
I know it's a newbie question, but any info would be appreciated.
Thanks again!
Where is the tether app icon? I can't find it anywhere...
Is this the TrevE tether?
What exactly does this do since we already have a hot spot with this phone?
Also, when flashing do the cache's need to be wiped?
