[REQ] Turn FM radio around? (FM transmitter) - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The thunderbolt has an fm radio reciever (requires headphone wire to use as Antennae). I can't find the data sheets, but on previous htc phones, the fm receiver hardware has transmit capabilities as well.
I want an app to turn on radio transmitting, so I can listen to pandora, music, last.fm, etc over my car radio.
This thread looks promising, but is over my head. help?

That would be pretty cool if it was possible

I do this now but I use a cord out the headphone jack and input into the car radio aux jack.
But it would be great to drop the cord.

If your car has an audio input that is a MUCH better solution, using the FM transmitter will just be a massive drop in quality and be susceptible to interference.
Either way though, this would be nice to have in a pinch, and for people who don't have inputs

i dont see this happening. even though he circuitry is similar between a receiver and transmitter, there is still other things that come into play as in how and what the actual circuitry attached to. Somebody is blowing smoke up your ass.

No ones doing any smoke blowing. I'm simply aware of the fact that on datasheets for previous Qualcomm chips they include terms like FM transmitting. I'm aware of circuitry requirements, but given the implementation of fm recieving via headphone cable antannae, and the transmitter being integrated into the same (Qualcomm MSM8655) chip, it seems logical that all the hardware is there, we just need to figure out the software part of this. IF the hardware isn't there, I'd imagine it to be as simple as routing power to the right pin.
I've been hunting for the Qualcomm MSM8655 datasheet for a while now, can't find it. Anyone know where a copy is?
Don't rain on my parade!

I believe this would violate FCC regulations somehow ?!

Nothing wrong with someone owning an fm transmitter. An unregulated one though might be an issue.

The general rule of thumb with FM transmissions Is that if you aren't bothering anyone enough to complain, then USUALLY you are fine.

Well i did have an fm transmitted that worked really well even came with a little remote I got it at family dollar for like $10 but the heat in the car killed it I think because it doesn't work any more This idea was good because usually transmitters have to be recharged or they have crappy batteries that don't last so having it in the same device rather then a separate one is way handy if it's possible!

Anyone know where I can get one that is IN STOCK? T-Mobile doesn't have them anymore from what I can see and all4cellular has been out of stock as well. Both have been out of stock for weeks and I really want to get one of these. Any info would be great. Thanks
you can use any 3.5mm FM transmitter but I can tell you from experience basically they all suck. You are better off investing in a stereo for your car that has a 3.5mm aux jack than using an FM transmitter.
I would cost way to much to put a stereo in my car that has a 3.5 audio jack. Luxury cars are not easy to install after market stereo's in :/
you would be surprised. http://www.crutchfield.com/
I already know how much it will cost. First I have to pay someone to make a custom dash kit. Then ill have to buy a head unit and find a custom wiring harness. Trust me its cheaper to spend the money on an fm transmitter...
You may want to look into getting a bluetooth adapter instead or your stereo may have an alt. input for a dvd player or other rear entertainment system . Most fm transmitters are not worth the money but you may be interested in an in lin one which would be worth it .
Car doesn't have either. I know ALL my options even hacking up the wiring in my car to have an aux input. I don't wanna do that.

Just out of curiosity, what are you driving? I'm kind of a car guy. Also since it is in stock now if you do buy one let us know how it is, I have found that the only way I could get my ipod FM transmitter to work decently is if I used FM 87.9 because there basically no FM stations in the US that use that signal.

99 Acura RL With Navi.
I just realized this but doesnt original MyTouch have a MiniUSB connector not a MicroUSB like the Slide? Meaning this Transmitter wouldnt be all that useful without using a Mini to Micro converter or using the line in option in which case the phone wouldnt get charged.
I found it at local t-mo store in L.A. You can't find it online or 611. Sucks. I loved it until I rooted and went to custom roms. There's an issue with the transmitters built in mic... it just doesn't work now. Kinda defeats the purpose I guess.
So it looks like it's back in the t-mo store. I couldn't find it all summer online and now it's back.

Are you really that scared to touch the stereo? Just because you have Navigation doesn't mean that the stereo isn't the same as all other cars, you have 2 different wires for each speaker, then you have typicaly 3 to 4 other wires, one will be ground, one will be an always on power (memory, saves your settings/stations), and a rem wire which just gives enough power to the head unit to tell it to turn on. There might be another wire for the dimmer on the front of the radio. And you DONT have to splice the wires, ever heard of BestBuy or Car Toys? or anything like that? They sell ADAPTERs that you just install inline with the stock wiring harness and you do'nt have to cut any wires. You don't have to spend tons of money for a custom dash kit either, I know for a fact they sell them at Bestbuy and car toys, pretty much any place that deals with car audio. Seriously though man, all you have to do is a little more research. Google is your best friend, me amigo.
Don't be a *****, it's really not hard, and honestly, who still listens to radio anymore? I mean get real guy, gonna waste your money on a damn FM reciever instead of getting a radio that will have 10000000x more use? But hey, to each their own, your money, your problems. Not mine.
If you car has an "AUX" connection in the back... alot of them do... go to radio shack and get a headphone to RCA wire and just connect it to your AUX and the phone and you're done.

Regarding FM transmitters - I posted about the DesignTech transmitter a while back. Do a search and check it out. The correct channel versionstill pops up on ebay every now and then, and they are cheap.
If you can find the right version its frequency response and TX power are terrific, well, at least as far as FM TX go.
Hope this link doesnt violate TOS - if so please remove. But they dont sell it anymore, so I dont see the harm. http://www.smarthomeusa.com/ShopByManufacturer/DesignTech/Item/20800/
Of course I am biased - I helped design the audio section - but I would put its sound quality up against anything on the market...

Bluetooth to AUX ?

Anyone have any good solutions? I am trying to find some, but coming up with older outdated results.
I basically want a bluetooth receiver that I can plug into my AUX input of my car. This being used for music, GPS and calls. I would also like something that can keep power through the car lighter if possible.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Quick update, I received my Scosche motorMOUTH II Stereo from the ebay I linked. I received it the day after I placed the order. It works great, sounds great. People can tell I'm on speakerphone but they understand me fine. The only con is that you can't charge it while using it. it usually prevents you, but I was able to get it to charge while running, the problem is that you will get the weird feedback sound from the car lighter through aux cable.... Not sure how to explain it.

That's a ground loop. Google ground loop isolator or ground loop filter.
The one I have looks exactly like the PAC SNI-1/3.5 or the PGLI35 (just google those terms) and it works very well - don't pay over $15, I think I paid less than $10 three years ago. It looks like the Kensington Noise Reducing Car Audio AUX Cable has it built-in if you need something longer.
I got this one for $32 at tmobile store with the 50% off coupon. Its a headset that comes with an adaptor to plug a 3.5mm audio jack and a stereo headset.

Yes. Under each bluetooth device you pair to on your phone you can select whether it's used for music, calls, or both; and you can pair with two devices simultaneously. I do this successfully all the time with my Kensington Liquid Aux (for music in the car, does calls too but the mic is crappy) and a cheap BT headset from LG.
It's a shame that Kensington unit is hard to find now, the remote it comes is SUPER handy and it's something I haven't seen included with any other BT bridge. I attached the remote to my Civic's steering wheel and it literally looks stock.
Another good bridge for music only is the BluBridge mini-jack Rx, battery lasts a long time and you can power it with any USB car charger, really good range too. I got one last year and liked it so much I got a second during Christmas to give away as a gift. I use it at home or during small get-togethers so I can stream to any stereo or set of portable speakers.
Ive been using this one http://cgi.ebay.com/IOGEAR-Bluetooth-Wireless-Audio-Transport-Headset-NEW-/150443532234?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2307221fca
Not trying to be rude or anything but why use bluetooth?
Why not just plug your phone directly into the Aux?
I have one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001DDE4VY/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/175-8678155-4748113
And it works well. It's expensive....and it doesn't plug into your Audi port.....and the Mic isn't built in ....the Mic comes with it, you have to plug it in and clip it on to your shirt. The satechi device works real well though.

[Q] Does the EVO 3D FM components work as a transmitter as well?

I was doing a little snooping around to find out, but it looks like the EVO 4G had not only an FM Receiver, but an FM Transmitter as well. Does anyone know of the EVO 3D have this as well, and would any devs be interested in making use of this somehow?

For some reason there doesn't seem to be very much interest in this. I myself have been wanting a phone that does this since I seen the LG music do it.

LG Fusic (LX500), awesome phone. Well, a so-so run of the mill flip phone but that FM transmitter was awesome...and pretty strong output too, better than my ****ty Sirius radio (a whole string of them) that was actually wired up to the antenna in my car.
Well the reason there is no cm transmitter is because there is no physical connection on ic board itself. Yes the hardware is capable but it was not built in for the 3vo.
I just use my 3.5 jack bc I have auxiliary input on deck

^^^ Exactly what he said^^^^ the chip is capable But missing the transmitter itself plus code would have to be written for it to work. It has been looked at plenty of times before but not alot of support for it as it would be a Ton of man hours plus like i said u would still need to solder a transmitter some how.

Mine's an aftermarket Kenwood.
http://www.amazon.com/Kenwood-KDC-MP345U-Dash-Receiver-Input/dp/B00337WLN6
It's real nice cause I can plug the phone in, choose the "Mount SD" option on the phone, and it automatically finds my music folder.
My Clarion works with USB. It even charges the phone. I kind of prefer over bluetooth though, since then it gives driving directions and I can take phone calls handsfree. The line in is too low of volume it seems on the Evo3D.
I had added line-in to my factory F250 deck, but even with my subs and Polk components the factory just didn't have the oomph, so I scrapped that and changed to the Clarion. I will say, the line-out on the 4G seemed louder with identical equipment. I didn't get my DB meter out though.
Regarding FM, it is **** quality. I could see where it would be convenient on the random, but if the stereo is decent enough sound FM is flat out garbage.
Must be factory radio issue. I do have bluetooth for calls but not audio. Must be a Chevy thing.
Haha my wife had the fusic as well. U just throw the thing on ur dash and play all ur mp3 from ur phone.

You've got options.. best option is if your headunit in the car accepts 3.5mm jack, just get a cable.. that'll get you the best sound quality.
Next option is an FM transmitter.. but as people have mentioned, quality can be lacking on those..
3rd option is to get a new head unit in the truck that supports either the 3.5mm jack, or a2dp bluetooth..
I use the 3.5mm jack connected to my alpine radio and it sounds awesome especially with the built in equalizer options on the phone.
Gotcha im off work now about to go hit up walmart n get the jack. Thanks everyone

My work truck has a tape deck, and I bought a cassette adapter that has a 3.5 plug at the other end.
As was mentioned previously, the fm modulator is pretty flakey here in Arizona. There is maybe 1 or 2 stations that I was able to tune to. Even then, it cuts out and I get other peoples music as I pass them.
The cassette tape is old school, but it works.
I use double twist player, and I am very happy with it.

Yeah FCC a few years ago cracked down on these FM broad casters(they where too strong) and now they all suck and you pretty much have to place it right next to your antenna to get good signal.

Discovery about headphone noise (humming)

I looked and didn't see anything about this, so forgive me if it's been posted already.
I noticed, like a lot of people, the annoying humming that this phone makes when you listen to music (for me most apparent when I have it hooked to my car stereo) but I was listening to music with a portable speaker, speaker connected to my LAPTOP (not the phone), and I moved the phone close to where the 3.5mm plugs into the laptop, and I heard the same buzzing sound. 0__0 ... So I think the humming is coming from some one of the wireless radios.. not sure which one, but after a few seconds, it wouldn't hum anymore, which means the radio must have shut off...
Again, forgive me if this is already known information, but if it isn't ... this may help some people, maybe the GPS radio causes the noise?? or Wifi??

Yep found that out on day one. Switch to wi-fi or turn off data and all will be well. If you're streaming in the car, I barely notice it with the music turned up. Droid Charge didn't have this problem, but it also didn't have an amplified headphone jack. I had to turn my car radio up way higher than my iPod with that phone, not the case with this one.

You've got to be kidding me... That is nuts, and that buzzing drives me absolutely CRAZY! I noticed something that with my Beats over ears, every time I touched the screen the buzzing would start, couple seconds it would go away. I put the phone into airplane mode and presto, all the buzzing was gone! Verizon HAS to do something about this, it makes the headphone jack virtual unusable!
HTC Is Aware Now
So after getting my second device from Verizon with the same issue I was finally transfered over to HTC. After an hour conversation and then some back and forth emails HTC is now aware! Very exciting as this issue has been bugging me for a while. They have now replicated the issue and are going to begin work on a fix!
Email From HTC said:
Thank you for the information. Unfortunately, it did not take me long to test the issue and replicate it with my personal device. I use in-ear ear buds and will be forwarding this to our corporate office in the morning so that we may complete some additional testing on the team and hopefully find a permanent resolution. I appreciate you bringing this to my attention.

So after getting my second device from Verizon with the same issue I was finally transfered over to HTC. After an hour conversation and then some back and forth emails HTC is now aware! Very exciting as this issue has been bugging me for a while. They have now replicated the issue and are going to begin work on a fix!

Though not sure how exactly they could fix this without a hardware change. Rezound had same issue.

Anyone try a Ferrite Split Core? Not sure if it would help but if you have one sitting around it would be worth a try. Just wrap your audio cable through it a few times, worth a shot. Maybe two one at each end. See attached image.
I've run into this myself, however.....the humming does go away on it's own after a few seconds even when I'm downloading a large file over LTE....that tells me that while it still may be a hardware issue, they likely have filters in place that the software isn't triggering in a timely fashion. So it's possible it could be fixed in software.

It definitely did. Both this phone and my Charge make my computer speakers buzz.

Did you ever hear anything more on this? I listen using quite sensitive molded ear buds, and am considering returning the phone. What good is an expensive media device that sounds like a lumber mill?

If you're using expensive IEMs, why are you driving them with the built-in amp? You need to use an external amp and use a player like Neutron MP to line-out to it.

Thank you! I have considered picking up an external USB DAC. Can you confirm that the stock ROM will support it, and are there compatibility concerns with specific DACs? I'm not an audio engineer any more, so I can't justify spending much...

The E17 is a great USB DAC, if that's too expensive, the E7 is a good alternative. You can use an OTG cable and do USB audio, or line out using Neutron. :good:

I turn off sync when I listen to music and it does the trick. But I also keep sync turned off when I'm not on WiFi so its not really a big deal.

It's not the LTE radio causing it. LTE does not use TDMA (time division multiple access, as opposed to CDMA) as in traditional GSM. It uses a different form of signal transmission called OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiple access) which is continuous transmission like CDMA, which does not make speakers buzz. Most of the cause of this is the circuit being closely tuned with the flow of power in and out of the battery. If you plug in the phone to charge while using the headphone jack, it should be even louder and more apparent.
A quick fix for this is to put whatever you're using through a noise filter. This one is only $10 on amazon and is better for those listening through speakers rather than headphones. As for me, I don't really hear it much on my phone unless its plugged in, in which this little filter fixes the issue.

Really, then how come whenever I switch to 4g i get buzz, but while on 3g or WiFi it doesn't buzz. And on top of that HTC has said its the 4g antenna causing it.

Coincidence? I've never gotten any buzz, and I'm always on 4G.
Not happening here on stock. I use headset for about 3 hours a day. Best sound yet and i'm a picky listener with only high quality headsets. My Bose OE2 would have picked up any noise.
a little off topic... I havent tried to replicate this on my DNA yet but my iPhone 5 and everyone iPhone I've had since '07 (I've had them all) have this buzzing noise in the car when I have them playing through the aux jack AND charging simultaneously. when I unplug the charger, noise is gone...
