Just wanted to write this up real fast and hopefully help a few people. I myself, coming from the EVO, did it also. Ya know, just pressing the "next" button and not paying attention to what I was actually hitting next to. I have seen quite a few people and threads about this so hopefully this helps. I had to dig around for answers, lol.
If you were just pressing next, next, next like I was, you will have found yourself with Google Voice taking over your texts and phone calls. And I did not like it at all. When my phone rang, I had to answer and press 1 to accept the call. WTH is that? Anyway, to get it back right you will need to log on to your computer to google.com/voice. In the top right hand corner you will see the settings button (where the arrow is pointing) and click on voice setting. Select the phone tab. Uncheck the boxes that Google has registered your numbers and integrated and you will be good to go. Uninstall and re-install Google Voice if you would like without hitting the integration button on the first step. Hopefully Google will change this soon.
EDIT: Read down with the next few posts, a lot of good info that has been said.

I did the same thing too. I was so upset they ****ed up Google Voice this way. I mean integration is nice, but NOT taking over my text messaging app and phone number etc.
Once I figured out what I had done I was able to get it to work NORMALLY as in before Google screwed **** up. I do hope that Google fixes this "Apple Takeover" crap.
Just FYI - any changes made with Google Voice will reflect as account changes in Sprint.com now.
Or take the time and set it up right and enjoy the awesomeness only Google voice integration on Sprint can give you.

Here are some other cool things I'm able to do now myself. I can make outbound and inbound calls on my google talk using my cell number on my computer wherever I have internet access. I bought an OBI110 and hooked up a phone to it so now I have free VOIP calls whenever I answer or receive calls to my CELL number on this phone. Now I don't have to give anyone a different number and I can still control who gets to reach me at what time of the day. I can answer and receive texts on my computer, laptop, tablet all using my cell number. All my texts are backed up and searchable to my google voice account (even texts I send from my phone using one of the regular messaging apps, not google voice app)
My opinion. Take the time and setup integration right. It's one MAJOR advantage of being an Android user on Sprint now. You're missing out on way more by not setting it up than you would by setting it up.
Oh and for those who don't want to lose your old Google Voice Number, Google lets you keep additional numbers at $20 per number.

Well I think for me, and many others, it wasn't the same set up as when I set it up for the Evo or whatever phone the user had. Yes we should have read and paid attention more closely, but the fact is we didn't and I'm sure there will be plenty more also. Thank you for the info and links, very interesting

I almost did the same thing when I was setting up the app. I think they shouldve gone about putting that option in there a different way. If you're just going through it quick and pressing next you're screwed.
Off to check out those links... I tinkered with GV for hours trying to only use it for voicemail and use my stock or handcent for SMS/MMS. I kind of got it to work until I put the GV widget up to see the transcribed voicemail. The widget ended up displaying the SMS!
Finally I said screw it. Ditched the Sprint integration and setup a new number from some far away prefix. Now its great, GV for voicemail and stock or handcent for SMS/MMS.
Until GV can handle MMS and have SMS popups with screen off, I'm not using it except for phone call management.

In order to continue to receive text messages to your handset's Messaging app, you have to check "Receive text messages on this phone" under the Google Voice online phone settings.

I like the way Google voice is integrated, what i hated was the call screening. I finally was able to get to a computer and fix that problem and fix my text message problem as well. I use handcent, so i turn off the notification but kept the pop-up so i don't receive two notifications but i still have the pop-up i like for quick response.
Like already said, log into your Google voice account and mess with the settings until you get it how you want it. you can allow text to be received on your phone and you can turn off the call screening.
I didn't notice this until people started asking "where are you?" and "what phone are you using?"
I was like... uhhh..... my cellphone...? "Well its a weird number."
Walked into Sprint, asked what I did and the girl looked at me kind of weird. Eventually it clicked (I smacked myself in the head) and we figured out what it was (after two hard resets). She let me use her computer quick and we disabled it.
I like how it took over the phone, but without support for MMS/ picture messaging, I don't wanna use it.
Like many others, all I want GV to do is handle my voicemail. Unfortunately, GV wants to take over my life. I set the flag "Allow SMS on the phone" but they still went to GV. I've actually had to log out of GV in order to get my SMS in the messaging app on my phone. GRRR!
Use full GV integration, use your sprint number as your GV number, do NOT install the GV app, then setup it correctly on the website and you will have SMS, MMS and picture messaging just fine. (FROM your cell phone only, can't send MMS from GV website or any other phone you link)
It doesn't do MMS/Picture messaging if you choose "option 2", use your GV as your sprint. Also, if you do option 2, sprint can't give you the unlimited mobile to mobile because the database uses prefixes to sort which are mobile, and GV numbers show as landlines.
So, yes, if you do your integration correctly, you get your sprint number, GV features, MMS, SMS. GV voicemail, etc.

this is a problem by the app. Everytime you install the app it unchecks the receive text notifications. So anytime you sign out and sign back in the app (which should be rarely) you have to go back and recheck that option.

That incorrect, option 2 still allows for any mobile to ANY mobile. If you go to your google account on the web and your phone number says "sprint integrated" sprint servers know now to include this number as part of your plan for incoming and outgoing. Only difference is mms WILL have you original number, but both numbers are optimized for your plan.

If you do NOT install the Google Voice app on your phone how are you suppose to get your voicemails? IM still trying to figure out this google voice thing im sooo lost. Dont know why its so difficult. I just want to use google voice for voicemail like so many others. NOT text messages. But I get 2 dam notifications every time I get a dam text,lol.

You can send them to your email, or have them come in as text notifications.
Since I switched 2 phone over we've used zero minutes on our plan, except for the any mobile to any moible minutes, this seems more than enough reason to stay using it and not care about the quirks. It means I can drop to a lower plan and save money!
Using the google voice app for texts isn't that bad. Now that I'm used to it I like how everything is sorted by time received and then grouped into conversations, plus voicemail thrown into there. Its a one stop shop.It is great for work, we use just our personal cell phones for communication, I only have to check one place.
Call screening was the first thing I turned off, it was such a horrible idea. It's like they forgot we had that newfangled fancy thing called caller id on our phones.

Excellent!! Thanks for this info I found it and now deleted gv app and its SOOOOO much better!! Just get a text when i get a voicemail

I stopped that issue way before I bought an E3D. I used it on the OG Evo for seperating calls by dishing out Google number instead of my real cell number. Its kind of annoying how Google voice works though. I kind of see it as a privacy issue especially when it comes to texts and voicemail. Open your eyes people. Google isn't are cell phone company, so why give out such privacy.... To each is own.

i set mine up manually instead of the quick integration step. GV is my voicemail and i use my regular number to make calls and text. if i need to text or call using my GV number, i have a widget to to do that.
Yea once I re installed google voice and is asked permission to take over my voice mail I exited out then went back into the beginning and selected to skip integration. I am not interested in google taking over my sprint matters as well.
Remember when Google and Sprint went through that Integration a while back? Well this is where it takes affect!
If you Blindly Install Google Voice like many of you flashaholics do you probably misses an important but subtle step cause you the following issues:
1. All MMS/SMS are being handled through GV
2. All Out going phone calls are your GV#
3. Ass Acne
This is caused by you blindly agreeing to all of this and THIS wil tell you how to fix it (no ass acne solution yet... i think there is a tread in DEV section working on this)
1. UNINSTALL GOOGLE VOICE FROM YOUR PHONE
2. Jump on your computer (or use yoru phone if you can use the browser like that)
3. Go to Google.com/voice and sign in and jump to your Voice Settings
4. Now next to your number you want to click the DEACTIVATE SPRINT AND GOOGLE INTEGRATION (or something along those lines)
5. Back on your phone Download the GV app AND WAIT TO OPEN IT!!! YOU WANT TO READ THIS BEFORE YOU BLINDLY INSTALL AGAIN!!!!
6. Now when you first open the app THE FIRST screen you will be promted to integrate your sprint and google number...
7. "Tap 'Next' to complete the Sprint integration, or 'Skip' to complete the regular Google Voice setup."
8. I hope everyone who was complaining chose SKIP
9. Continue to install GV the way you remembered
10. ????

Seriously considering this myself. But I really like the integration... I was aware it did this since I had the same issues on my O.G. Evo. Google needs to just step up and make a way for us to turn off the MMS/Text. Or at the very least refine it because it handles them like garbage...
If you integrate using option 1 (Use your sprint number as your GV) and Don't use the GV app, then correct your settings on the GV site, you get MMS, etc, plus all the goodies of GV integration.
It seems to be working fine for me.
All sms is handled by the GV app and if I get any mms, it goes to the stock messaging app. Is that not what others are seeing?

Others want their stock text app to handle sms which it can if you tell Google Voice app to let text messages through.

No. Remember, you can use Google Voice integration even on phones that don't HAVE a Google Voice app. It really works server-side, and the app is just a client to the service they provide.
Yes but the thing that made the Sprint/Google voice integration unique was that you replaced your google voice number with your sprint number. You essentially only have one number now, which I like. If I deactivate this service, I'd have to go back to having two numbers, as far as I can tell. So that's the reason it's a tough decision for me, unless I'm totally missing something...
You can go through your desktop and turn off text through tv on your device.

I still can't get it to work the way I think most people including myself do.
I want to be able to have the voicemails downloaded directly to my phone meaning not just a text notification, not dialing my number to hear them, just pressing play to hear them. And I'd like them transcribed too.
And for the texts I want them to go to either my default texting app or another app of my chosing but not the GV app.
And I want to maintain the tight integration with my Sprint #, meaning Sprint # = my GV #. Someone lay out the steps to achieve this exactly and I'll gladly donate $10

There's a catch, as with anything. If you turn your sprint # into your GV number (option 1), you get MMS, you get SMS, you don't need the GV app, but it kinda ties to to sprint pretty much. If you ever change you're going to PAY to port your number IF you even can.
If you choose to use your GV number as your sprint number, (option 2) you'll lose MMS and the other drawback is billing. The unlimited mobile to mobile database is tied to prefixes so sprints lookup routines won't be able to figure this out and you'll use your minutes.
Seems like they only added option #2 for folks that gave out their GV number to everyone and not their cell. Fortunately I was NOT one of those that "fully" shared my GV number.

This is pretty much where I am now. I decided that taking texts out of the GV app was more imporant than voicemail for now. The major drawback to this set up is that although you get a text notifying you of the voicemail, which will include a transcription, you can't actually listen to voicemail unless you are using the GV app or you call your own number and log in. Sprint's voicemail app will not pick it up
I've never played with the voicemail piece. Never used VVM either. I always just dial my number and enter my password (from the phone) or open it in my email.
BUT, I get like 1 voicemail message a month IF I'm lucky.
Can't direct you with voicemail. But to me, the other features are more important as my cell is also my work #.
Is there any way to get the GV app to display on the lockscreen like the stock SMS app does? The only problem I have with using the GV app is that I lose this functionality.
Ok I am that guy. I set up GV blindly and now I can not get any texts sms or mms and I can not make any phone calls or receive. I know I am an idiot for not reading but I did not realize that it was changed. Can anyone help, PLEASE?
Edit: Not sure what happend but after lossing all data I now have my phone back.
So I haven't been receiving text messages since yesterday I update prl and profile and rebooted but it didn't fix it. So i called and Sprint claims its because of Google voice. They removed GV from my account and now I'm getting texts. So I'm wondering if there's any other Google voice users here having the same problems and if so does Google know of the issue?

Sounds like you:
a) don't have the Google Voice app installed on your phone, and
b) didn't have your Google Voice account set to forward texts to your phone
In that scenario, you wouldn't receive any texts whatsoever. Normally w/ Google Voice, they'll be sent to the app at minimum, and also to your phone as a normal SMS if you've selected that option as in 'b' above.

I had both of those and app and forward to phone iv had GV since the Sprint merger and this is the first time iv had problems with it. Sprint says its a problem on Google's end and they have had a few calls today about it. I was just wondering if it has affected any of you guys? Also thanks for the suggestions.

Exactly, just make sure when installing google voice, you have "text messages" checked & you can toggle off "Inbox notifications".
1. My Sprint number is tied directly to Google Voice via the built-in integration.
2. I have the EVO 3D.
Is there any reason why I would want to use/install the Google Voice application when I already get everything directly through it anyhow?
I'm pretty sure that in order to receive texts, you have to have the app installed.

Thanks for the responses. I get and send text messages via the phone and it all shows up in Google Voice (the web portal). Voicemail is transcribed for me and then emailed directly - and I can still check it from my phone by holding 1. So it sounds like I don't need to install the app. Thanks for confirming
What about for international calls?
1) If someone calls me internationally, can I pick up with Google Voice wifi and not have to pay as much?
2) If I call a international number, is it cheaper if I initiate the call through the web UI?

Voicemail. I hate the stock voicemail interface.
Yup........voicemail. You pretty much get Visual Voicemail with it. How else are you supposed to retrieve your voicemails? Dialing your own number? This is 2011.
I decided not to install the app cause the MMS issue. All my texts/mms work fine but I dont receive visual voice mails. I still wont install the app cos its a pain in the ass to open the app for everything.

Your text will always go through Google voice once integrated, but there is a setting in the app and web page that lets them come in as regular texts as well. Mms always goes straight to the phone even if you integrate and install the app.
I prefer Google Voice for visual voicemail mostly because GV gives you free text transcription.
What I do is just have the option for text notification so my texts still go through the stock message program and I pretty much ignore GV for anything else. Now whenever I miss/ignore a call and I get a voicemail, I get a text from myself letting me know I have a voicemail and I can then open the app. A bit of that text also contains some of the transcribed voice message left and who it was from. This also helps save battery/data (unlimited plans yes I know) since I don't have to leave GV logged in all the time etc.
My only complaint is that I would like the text notifying me of the voice message to look as though it came from the person that called me instead of myself.
use it to answer you sms through google voice web page,

I did not see a reason to use the Google Voice app for my integrated number. My texts and mms go though the native app, I get a text with the transcribed voicemail or I press and hold 1 to listen to them.
However I setup the Google Voice App with my other Google Voice number. So I can send and receive texts and listen to voicemails for a secondary number.
Also with the return of Sipdroid I setup the same Google Voice Number that is in the Google Voice App, now I have 2 fully functional lines.
For those that love the Google voicemail but hate the merged text messaging, you need to login to Google voice, unnassociate your phone and install the "lite" version.
Do not chose the Integrate with Sprint option.

Disable inbox notification in GV app and enable text notification. Everything is logged in GV but text come through your regular app. I still have to checkout voice mail. I believe if voice mail notification is set to text to your phone, everything will be notified though regular messaging app and you can open GV app to get your voice mails.
Yup, like donnie said. I can delete texts off my phone, but they're also backed up on Google voice.

Just confirming, if you enable text notification and disable inbox notification in GV application, you get everything through text message. You will have to open GV application to listen voice mail but for text default application will be used. Everything is still logged into google voice.

Maybe I'm an idiot but I can't figure it out. I'm new to Google voice.. I'm trying to use it for my voicemails but when I go through the setup it tells me my carrier doesn't support this feature..
Is the Thunderbolt not able to use Google voice to receive voicemails?

I was trying to use Google Voice to make free calls, but gave up due to worse quality then Skype.
I did try the voicemail feature once but had to logon to my google account from my pc. It apparently set up some sort of forwarding option and i had to call some google phone number to check my voicemails.
I've been using it for Voicemail only since i've owned the original Droid. Works fine on my thunderbolt. Setup just had to dial a number to forward my voice mail and that was it. I'm on stock rooted. ROM bug maybe?

Search Google voice on your PC once you are logged in there's a little gear on the top left of your web page. Click that and choose voice settings. I just did mine tonight. Lol

i came to post this. set it up from your PC then set google voice on your phone to control voice mail. that's all it takes.
U don't get to make free calls, just free text messaging. Also when u make calls it changes ur number. Say u call ur mom and her number is 123 5555555, but when u look at bill it will say I made the call but it won't show her number, shows the number google made up.

Add gv # to friends and family. Use gv callback. Done. Free.
