I just had a few questions about my new Evo 3D... I've been looking on the forum. but haven't found anything... So I thought I'd Ask..
Isn't Sense 3.0 supposed to support landscape mode on the UI? (is there an option to enable this? - 2.1, I think Supported this on my OG E4G.
Is the 3D camera/video supposed to constantly auto focus over and over? i can see maybe it needs to due to the 2 cameras. but it kinda gets annoying, when trying to take a pic.. haha.
Why does the 3D only work in Landscape mode? .. like if I take a pic in 3D, it will only take the pic if I have the phone tilted to landscape. which is crazy to me. Many shots look better from the portrait angle. which is refuses to take pictures that way. my thinking is. if its 3D. wouldn't the orientation not matter? and worse case scenario if it did. so I have a pic that you view sideways. But i'd still have my better angle picture, right?
Other than those issues, I've loved the phone. the 3D is better then I thought it'd be. a lil weird/different to get used to. I love the speed, it restored my texts from my previous phone, and deleting threads took seconds, not hours. that was really nice.
I believe that the screen has to be looked at horizontally because of the 3d technology the screen uses? Kind of like certain types of polarized 3d glasses. The 3d effect isn't the same when you look at the screen when it is vertical.

I'm only 99% sure of this one. I believe the 3D only works in landscape mode because the the cameras need to be in a horizontal fashion to take a 3D picture. The camera's have to be side by side instead of top and bottom.
I suppose if you took the picture in portrait, then were able to turn your phone horizontally without rotating the screen that you'd be able to view a portrait 3D picture, but then your picture would be sideways.
Whatever the case, the cameras need to be side by side. That is the nature of stereoscopic images. Ever seen a Magic Eye picture? Imagine trying to see the hidden image in portrait. Not possible.

I do like the 3D, but I really only like it when watching movies in 3D (i.e. Green Hornet) and when watching certain YouTube 3D videos. The videos made with higher end 3D camera equipment look really cool. The ones shot from Evo 3D don't look as good to me.
look at the layout of the lenses. If you tilt it on it's side it would be like tilting your head to the side. not to mention the 3D is more a fun gimmick than a primary use feature.
the only way they could take a 3D portrait picture would be if the lenses rotated to keep them horizontal.
the UI does not rotate does not do landscape, the one you were using was a port of either the desire z or shift that allows it due to the hardware keyboard.
i am sure it will be one of the first ports once we get root.
thank you for the replies guys.. i knew it'd be a good idea to ask here..
I did have another question.. I want to put thousands of pictures on my evo. (friends, pets, guitars, live concert pics, funny pics, illusions, etc) .. years ago, when I had my Palm Centro. I found, I was able to compress the images. and keep fairly good quality for that screen.. i was able to drop 2meg pics down to like 37k in filesize .. i was able to fit a couple thousand pictures on the sd card there, and it was somethinge like 300 megs.. it was nice.. i tried to copy those to my Ipod classic. and i guess the Ipod, did'nt like that.. as it re-created the pics bigger. but i can only assume to better fit that screen. so I was bummed out..
anyhow.. I would like to put many pics on my Evo 3D like that, but cut size. though keep relatively decent quality. if i open it on my evo, i'd like it to be full screen and clear... but compressed down from the 900k-2megs that the camera, or even the Evo 4G did..
Does anyone have any recommendations on either what resolution/quality to convert the pics too? / a program to do it? / advice?
I found a tutorial on converting video to work best on the evo. and it says: Set the EVO 3D Width and Height (the EVO 3D supports a maximum of 960 x 540 pixels) .. so that makes sense for video.. but not for pictures.. - but it was this tutorial that got me thinking.. (i also tried last year to find info on optimal pic size for the Evo 4G, and could'nt find anything and gave up looking)

Ok, for the photo compression question (if you still have it) I can point you in the right direction, but don't exactly have a solid solution for you. I use Photoshop and that has a feature to compress images. If you have that, great. But it's not worth getting just to compress photos. But the tool is "optimize for web." This strips the photo of all extra bits that won't be necessary. You'd want to be close to that 960x540 resolution too. Maybe try searching for photo optimizing software, possibly something geared to preparing photos for a website. If you find something and it asks how heavily to compress a jpeg on a number scale, usually 8 is a good starting point.

If I were you, I'd invest in a 32 GB SD card if you want optimal quality photos. As you probably already know, the more you compress a photo's file size, the more the quality of the picture degrades, especially with the JPEG file format. The JPEG file format, which is used on all the cameras I've played with so far, can compress an image down to a really low file size, but at the same time the picture quality degrades. The JPEG format also suffers from generation loss, meaning every time you decode and encode an image into the JPEG format, you lose quality. Personally, I prefer the PNG format over other formats since it uses lossless compression, but I don't think the EVO 3D's camera has an option to save in that format. The downside of the PNG format is that the file sizes are still larger than the JPEG format, but it's significantly smaller than the RAW format.
But then again, you're using a phone camera. If you were using a professional or high end amateur camera, I'm pretty sure things would be different. Basically what I want you to take from this is to try to avoid compressing/decompressing JPEG images often. It degrades the picture quality. I only wish the EVO 3D could save images in PNG format since it uses lossless compression.
Hi all, I have been noticing a constant problem w/ my stock 3D EVO -- The camera takes great pictures when in 2D, but the "right" lens for the camera always produces a very "blurred" image, almost like one is nearsighted and needs glasses. I just bought the phone a week ago, and has been like that with every picture I've taken. I've cleaned both lenses multiple times, and still have that issue. Looking at a 3D video on my laptop, it's drastically more "dull" than the left side. It's this way on the phone as well.. Anyone had this issue or know what could be causing it? Any fix? Unless I missed something in search, didn't see any complaints.
hi guys. im just curious how the video and pictures on the evo3d look compared to other 5 or 8mp cameras. are they sharp ect. how would the evo3d compare to say the iphone 4?
im in the market for a good camera phone
I personally feel the evo3d only takes great pictures sometimes - meaning it is hard to get good pictures.
The pictures tend to look better on the phone than when you look at them on a computer, where they tend to look more grainy when not in the brightest light. This feels like a step down from HTC's other offerings, which can look as good if not better than iphone pictures when pulled to your computer. I have gotten some fantastic pictures, but for the most part the camera has left me a bit wanting.
Playing around with 3d pictures is quite fun, and video recording is very good - particularly the audio, which was lacking in the evo4g.

It takes a much better picture than the Evo4G did. Much sharper looking, even with 3mp less.
However in low light it still gets grainy...the sensor can't help that, but the software can...but it doesn't. It does, however, take fantastic macro shots for a cell phone...surprisingly.
The 5mp cam on the NS4G I had for a few weeks was phenomenal. When I came back to the E3D it really made taking pictures with it seem pointless...and that's not even taking into consideration the .5-1.5 second shutter lag from when you push the button.
For a freakin' cell phone? It's fantastic. I've never used an iphone4 camera but I've only heard good things. But after seeing what a Samsung 5.0mp sensor/lens/software combo can do I am completely down on the E3D's camera. Granted it does 3D and it is a rather compelling effect...though the problems with the 5.0mp single-cam shots get even more pronounced in 3D at 2.5mp.
YMMV, etc etc etc. It is a cellphone after all.
EDIT: Also any shots with motion are pretty much ruined before you take them.
I agree with nhutpham, post number 2. The camera is not nearly what it should be. This phone revolved around its camera's, I mean come on its not called "Shooter" for nothing. 3D pics turn out good, still shots do anyway. But standard pics, thats a whole other ball game. Low light produces bad pics, even with the flash. Some pics will get a greenish tint to them (whites) when using flash. Rather then use all the "auto" settings I find setting things manually will result in better 2D pics. The device was not purchased by me for the camera though. I bought for the dual core processors Though now that I have my dual core I am wishing HTC would have stepped it up on the 2D camera
i think at stock the pictures look ok. but when you adjust iso, sharpness, exposure, contrast in the settings it makes them look much more vibrant and sharp.
i took a compartive shot of small rocks and the evo3d looked crisper and better overall compared to the iphone 4. so the camera cant be all that bad
Maybe this might help. I'm actually surprised at some of the pictures on here.

Being a photographer myself, I am impressed with the camera... but not all of the time. It takes phenomenal pictures outside in a good sunny day and even in overcast. Take the camera inside in average lighting of just about anyone's living room when the sunlight isn't dominating the light, then I'd be reluctant to show it of.
The poorer the lighting, the harder it is to focus and the photos can get very grainy. HTC also chose to compress the photos quite a bit which affects the picture quality, but makes it easier on the phone and network to share and upload. This goes back to a previous comment that they look better on the phone than on a larger display - its the compression.
If you're willing to root and mod this phone, there is a camera mod in the CDMA dev forum for this phone with camera improvements which makes me that much more impressed with the camera. Although, I think all that was changed was the compression for photos and video.
If you are taking a still picture under good light they look really good. If you have kids and are planning to take any pictures of them forget it.
Let's just they are playing baseball and you want to take a picture of them at bat. They get up there and you click the shoot button. The picture is then shown to you for review and you say wait, who the heck is that. Well while you thought you were snapping a picture of your child, by the time the camera actually took the picture your child got a double, the kid after him grounded to third, and in your picture is the batter who was batting 2 guys after him.....Great picture of someone elses child and of course that kid moved so the picture is blurry as well.
Okay, maybe I am exaggerating a little. You would probably get the batter right after him and not 2 guys down in the lineup, but it would still be blurry unless he batted like a statue....
Green, but otherwise good
Ya unfortunately the shutter lag makes the phone worthless in taking non still images.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I'm using the Virtuous Sense 3.6 GSM rom. While the camera is working (and so is everything else)...I cannot seem to be able to take a good photo at all.
All of my new picture look like it is taken behind a haze of fog even in bright scenes...
Anyone else have this issue? Or is there a fix?
nope... I've taken 3d pics and 2d in various settings since flashing ICS last friday.
I personally think the camera is nicer to use and the extra scene settings help me get a better photo.
Sounds silly but are your lenses clean?
Ok, thanks for replying...so it is me then, gonna play around some more

I find the same as you.. Gingerbread photos are sharp and clear whereas ICS photos take more time to capture, thus blurring the photo because it looks like it's taken it when there is actually a 2 seconds delay
I'm also no properly happy with camera, it's slower and i've problem with 2d photos
Yea, I kept playing with it.
It seems the picture quality is way fuzzier than taken with the Amaze camera app in Gingerbread.
Hope one of the dev can take a look.
Just got the S3 today, and can't seem to figure out how to use HDR. On my HTC One X, when I use HDR, I just switch to HDR and take pictures, and the app will do it's thing and it's done.
With the S3, it takes a picture, and says "processing", but when I looked at the picture it just shoot 2 separate files, but they are not combined (HDR'd)...
I'm pretty sure I'm missing something here.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Well, as you probably know, HDR works by taking three (or more) quick pictures at different exposures -- underexposed, normal, and overexposed -- and then combines them so that you can get more dynamic range overall. i.e.: you get to see the detail in the shadows as well as the bright areas. Take some test pictures where there's very bright and very dark areas in the same scene for the best example.
The HDR version is the 1st picture, and you're right that samsung decided to leave the 2nd "leftover" normal image there, probably for before/after comparison. There's no setting to just nuke that 2nd pic though. (other hdr apps in the market btw).
Thanks for the explanation.
I guess, the result is not that great as I thought it was the unprocessed images. lol. I have to try again, but HTC One X takes great HDR without the extra "leftover" image.
Thank you again.
No setting to suppress saving of the non-HDR photo?
I came here to ask if there was a setting somewhere to tell it to NOT keep a "normal" photo with every HDR photo. (I remember the iPhone gave you this choice.)
Next question, has anyone ever figured out how many shots the SGS3 actually uses to make the HDR photo?

Sorry...I'm not quite following. Are you saying "Just take 3 pictures of the same thing"...and that automatically makes an HDR picture (a 4th picture)?

He's saying that that's the way HDR works. It takes three different pictures at different settings and then combines them into one HDR picture.
That's the way it works with all digital cameras, not just the phone cameras. Software, such as The Gimp that have plugins for HDR do the same thing. Take one pic, create three duplicates, adjust the settings on the duplicates, then merge them back into one pic.
What is the best HDR app?

Sure, I know how HDR works. I do a lot with my Canon and making HDR pics. What I don't know is this: Do I need to manually take 3 separate pictures, and if I do, it automatically makes a 4th picture that is HDR?
The post implied it made extra photos, if I take 3 pics I find no extra pictures; and all 3 look idential.
Now, of course doing it manual, you would need to take one; change exposure; take another; change exposure; and again. There's no way a person would get 3 exactly identically framed pictures having to do that. If that is the process, I can't imagine the picture is much good.
No you don't need to take 3 pics. One of the two you see is supposed to be the HDR image and the other is just a regular pic. The phone does it all for you.
