[Q] Compass on Gingerbread - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I searched for discussions on this and couldn't find any. Sorry if I'm posting something that has already been discussed.
I have followed the saga of GPS on Gingerbread, and I tried out a couple of GB ROMs over the last couple of days and was thrilled to see GPS working!
Unfortunately, the compass, an important component when navigating, it seems is broken on all Gingerbread ROMs for the Vibrant, from what I hear.
What is preventing this from working? Is it another component that is completely blocked until we get a leak?
Thanks!

Bump.
No one knows?

Try turning on the GPS sensor.

As I mentioned, from what I understand, this is an issue with GB ROMs on our phones, similar to the GPS issue that was only just recently somewhat solved. I got that info from the dev of Revolution ROM.

Could someone please test it on the newsets GB ROMs/Kernels? I'm also wondering is it working correctly with CM/MIUI?

I'm almost 100% sure this isn't working in the latest nightlies of CM7. Viewed as a low priority in comparison to the 911 issue and other things.

No. Vibrant GPS is a software issue, but no GPS software released or leaked is guaranteed to fix anyone's problem. Search before posting.

I disagree, I would think if it was just a software issue either Samsung or the devs on here would of had a fix that works for everyone. But this is not the case in the many months the Vibrant has been out. I have a 4 year old non smart phone that had navigation that performs far better than my 2 vibrants with any GPS fix you can find. I know the devs have done some great things with leaked ROMs so I don't think they are to blame for a end all be all fix for the GPS, and well you'd hope samsung's programs knew what they were doing and well they can't seem to create a fix that works for everyone. So what's left hardware.

From what I can tell, this problem seems to be a combination of hardware and software related. I, like a few others, have better results when WiFi is turned off. This could be due to one of two reasons. First, it could be because the WiFi signal is interfering with the GPS signal. The reasons *why* this could happen are numerous, and would point to a H/W problem.
Regardless of whether it is a hardware problem or software related, a lot of problems can be reasonably addressed through software patches. I think we've seen that the JK and JL Modems actually do a better job with many people in term of improving the GPS performance. I am using the JL1 Modem with good, albeit not perfect, results. So, it appears that Samsung has addressed the problem (to the best of their ability) using software. I will add that the JL1 Modem also did wonders on improving my compass as well.
Hope this helps.

this is my thread, hope will help other guys that having the same problem like me.
I use my GPS all the time and I generally get a lock within 5 or 6 seconds when I am close to home and 10 - 20 when in the city. Not sure why the difference depending on location. I use it as the main GPS in my car, works great, better than my wifes crappy tom tom. Running Obsidian 4.2 no additional mods.

[Q] Any GB Roms for Vibrant with working GPS?

Hi all,
Has anyone found any GB ROMs with working GPS? I was contemplating doing the hardware GPS fix for the vibrant, but I've been wondering if that would be enough to get the GPS working on GB ROMs. I sound like a total noob, I know, but any help here would be greatly appreciated. Froyo ROMs are great on the Vibrant but I am going to go out on a limb here and say that I think most of them are nearing the end of their development. Thanks everyone.

Well the hardware doesn't seem to be the problem. It is the lack of GPS files from a leak. With froyo we had a leak very early on so this was never a problem.
Yesterday devs found a leak (on samfirmware) for the galaxy s 4g (GPS chip identical to vibrant) that helped them to create a functioning GPS on gingerbread oon our phone.
You can switch to any JVB rom and flash the GPS fix and follow instructions from there to have a a functional gingerbread rom. There are a few problems, like that you can't turn the GPS off and on and it still work. You have to reboot to get it to lock on again. Also some people were reporting that their compass was switched around. But you and I can probably assume that that will be fixed in the near future. Hope I could help

Theres a fix in the works from birgertime on the development board. Only for JVP roms though it looks like.

I believe it's still in the work. Hopefully soon.
If you can't live without GPS, then don't switch over to a 2.3 base yet.

Hi,
the ROM indeed great, but I have a problem with the GPS.
it works for me only the first time after a reboot.
the 2nd, 3rd attempt etc. dont lock.
I do not know if I have to change anything in the LBS conf, and I cannot reply in the development forum cause I am new.
anyone had a similar problem?
//Morris
You don't need to change anything. Most of these gingerbread ROMs that have GPS working mention the fact there is a bug. The GPS works, but you can't get it to work again without rebooting if you turn it off.

Hi,
I understand I have the keep the GPS always turned (at least the option marked as on)
my problem is with my Sat Nav app.
it locks fast for the first time, but doesn't anymore after I close the app and start it again (even after a few minutes).
On the revolution rom which I like I can't get a gps lock at all no matter reboots or anything

Anyone not have gps trouble on honeycomb?

Im just curious if anybody out there is running the stock version of Honeycomb and NOT having any gps lock problems?
No problems here. Don't use the GPS extensively but I've not noticed a problem when I use it with either GB or HC.
I use Sygic a ton! Like around 3 times a week and I have not had any problems on HC

So your not running anything special?
Not rooted, or different kernal flashed. Stock version of HC?

there is a patch on GPS from crypted,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1267899
used it and check your gps with gps-status.
Hope this help,
I saw that patch.
Looks like I will try and do that next day off.
Gotta root my tablet first though
When running CypherROM I had no problems with GPS lock.
I'm trying the de-sensed ROM now, and haven't tried GPS yet.
No, nothing special. Just the HC I got when i updated. No special Rom or anything.

This has been hashed over and over. There must be 10 similar thread on this forum so not sure why people see the need to open yet another one, but.
Nothing actually fully fixes the GPS issue in HTC honeycomb, same for all the custom HC variants. It appears to have a problem that repeatedly resets the GPS after a period of time. For some applications, it will still work if you are in a location that allows a fast lock again or for applications that need a one time fix. There is something buried deep in the driver or kernel that is playing havoc with the GPS.
STILL NOT FIXED ON ANY VARIANT OF HC.

I'm still using Slim ICS with 4.0.4. The GPS is ok, it works but still not great. I don't think my phone will ever be great though. I want to try out SlimBean but it seems they are having GPS issues among other things.
Honestly, I've found that GPS can be a real hit or miss depending on your specific phone.
All hardware is not created equally, unfortunately. I'd suggest testing a few different roms and find which works best
for you specifically...because I've had luck with GPS on roms where users have reported bad GPS, and no GPS on roms where
awesome GPS was reported.
Good luck!

I would use either PA or CM10, but you need to flash the 3 gps fix files located somewhere in the PA thread. I would not use Slimbean 3.0 if you really need GPS since even if you do flash the files, no satellites come in view at all. I got a lock below 10 sec outside driving on monday at 7:30 pm. Accuracy was about ~25 feet, so it was really good. I was on CM10. Anyway, both have really good GPS as long as you have the 3 GPS files. They are called: GPS - Experia Files, YAGF2, and cwm-cm9-gps-wrap. Flash it in the order I wrote it in. They arent hard to find. Just type the names into Google. Or look in the PA thread. Good luck bro, and as Xenoism said, it also varies with device. If your device was made before Nov 2010, you probably wont get a lock no matter what unless you did the hardware fix. Even with the hardware fix, you'll still need these 3 files.
EDIT: Because I'm nice, I found the post where Jrafael posted the GPS files. It is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33575684&postcount=504
I have great gps with SlimBean and the 3gps fixes, its even better than my Galaxy Nexus. However, I owned a couple Vibrant and they all seem to have difference performance. Try the hardware gps fix if you're brave.
Note that for SlimBean if you patch mismatched patches it can make GPS stop working completely, only patch gapps from their own site.

Which version of Slimbean are you on? 2.9 works fine, but 3.0 is stone dead. (From my experience and a bunch of other members) I flashed the files and rebooted, tried getting a lock and not even one satellite appeared. Usually on other roms i get locks in less than 10 secs and after deep sleep, less than 20. I dont think he'll need the hardware fix if his phone is built after Nov 2010. But if its built before, then he'll definitely need it if he needs GPS that bad. That or get a new phone with GPS or buy a GPS :good:

[Q] CM 10 with JellyBeanMod GPS Issues

Hi everybody. I have been reading many of the posts here over the past 6 months and trying to learn as much as I can about different ROMs and issues related to my particular phone which is the Samsung Epic 4G Touch.
Thanks Exit_Only for your helpful work in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975379. In that thread Sydius 08 asked "How are the Stable 1 tweaks running for you guys? Running CM10 11/18 nightly" I would like to focus on one aspect of that.
First I am currently running cm-10-20121117-UNOFFICIAL-d710 with gapps-jb-20121011-signed. I had installed JellyBeanMod_Stable-One_EO in hopes that it would resolve my long-standing GPS issue. I have read so many threads and I do appreciate all of the comments and attempted fixes by this community. I also use GPS Status and GPS Essentials where I see zero satellites but saw eight or nine instantly with #3 below. Here are the three times when my GPS has worked:
1) When I first got it just over a year ago. It was running Gingerbread 2.3.x (don't remember the last number but think it was 1). It worked perfectly but stopped after about 2 months and worked on and off after that.
2) After the GPS completely stopped working I started learning all I could about using a custom ROM. I tried CyanogenMod 9 but it did not resolve the issue. There's more to the story and more ROMs and tips provided here that I tried but all failed. However, whenever I Odin back to StockCWM-EL26.tar it works perfectly. I followed the tip about getting a fix prior to putting an ICS or JB ROM on.
3) I installed this on 11/15 http://sbrissen.chris41g.org/sbrissen-ALPHA6.zip and my GPS worked perfectly. However, lots of other apps failed miserably and it kept freezing up.
So here I am with nowhere else to turn. This latest CM 10 works perfectly EXCEPT the GPS. I would appreciate any thoughts on this.
i'm sure someone will mention this, but have you attempted to acquire a GPS lock on a stock ROM, for example, and revert to one of your desired ROMs?

Thank you. I had actually tried that one and ran into a problem with flashing it but I think that's because I didn't go back to StockCWM-EL26.tar first. I might give it a try again. I do love CM 10 and it would be perfect if the GPS worked.
For those who may not know this guy, QBKing77, is one of the best at teaching how to do this. Here is one for the SGIII and the Blazer ROM which he considers one of his favorites. I had to remove the link because I'm such a newbie. Here is the YouTube description: Blazer Rom on the Samsung Galaxy S III [REVIEW]

yep. this is the same method i used to fix my friend's GPS issue on a jelly bean ROM. after seeing to it that i was getting a GPS lock on the stock ROM, i went back into recovery, and flashed the ROM she wanted (paranoid android i think it was)... since then, she's been a happy camper locking into 7-9 satellites indoors
Great news! I was able to resolve this issue by following Qbking's YouTube tutorial: "How to Temporary Boot Stock EL29 on the Samsung Epic 4G Touch." I was able to lock on to 9 satellites and get a fix on my exact location. It was literally showing me in front of the building where I was standing.
I hope this helps someone else who might be going through the same problem with their GPS on an E4GT. If someone could post this information and possibly the link to the thread I referenced earlier I would appreciate it.
Thank you everyone for your comments.
