[Q] Hotspot After 7/6 on Rooted Phones? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone have any idea what will happen to the built-in Hotspot app on Verizon Thunderbolts after they issue their "software update" to disable it on 7/6? Am I correct in thinking that rooted phones don't receive automatic software updates?
I realize there are other apps that can be used to tether or hotspot on rooted phones; this is more out of technical curiosity. I wonder if Verizon will also implement something on the network side which would prevent the "native" hotspot/tethering features from working.

Supposedly it will be taken out or altered by an ota update. Or at least that's what I read a while ago about it. I could be wrong though. Wait for others to chime in and see if I'm correct or not to be sure.

My guess is that when the app starts, there will be a prompt telling you that you will be charged for the service, press ok to continue. Again, only a guess, but that seems like it would be the most logical way of doing things.

What about third party thether apps like Barnacle?

I doubt they are going to push a software update to disable this.
My Guess is Verizon will remove the "MOBILE HOTSPOT PROMO" feature from our accounts, and then when you tether you'll get directed to the Verizon Page asking you to subscribe...
Kind of like how its been on 3G phones, when you subscribe to the hot spot feature, they just add it to your account to enable you, remove it to disable it...

My rooted Thunderbolt (with a 0625 LTE radio) and CM7 RC1.3 fails to tether unless I dial the date back to May. This happens with any of the non-Verizon tethering apps. Does anyone know a workaround for this?

Call Verizon and sign up for the tethering feature.

(Fixed) How to enable wifi hotspot using AT&T set

I have an AT&T set but it is now unlock and use in my country where I have no issue to use wifi tethering with my service provider in Singapore.
However each time I try to turn on wifi hotspot, it said go to AT&T url or dial 611 to use.

i had this problem too, but i installed the gingerblur script (dev forum) and since you get the option to remove "bloatware", i am guessing there is an application in the phone that detects personal hotspot without an att tethering account.
you might want to freeze in titanium backup unneeded programs, there's a list on the forums
same problem
I search a solution in google,but,no result.
Anyone know it? please help us!!

you shouldnt have to freeze anything for mobile hotspot to work. did you put in the APN for your carrier? you cannot use the AT&T tether fix for your carrier you have to use your settings from your carrier.

You have to set your APN for your own carrier. Whatever works on AT&T does not matter in SG.

Just edit your APN to include "tether" in the Type field, i.e. Type: default -> Type: default, tether

try turning on your wifi before you turn on mobile hotspot. i get stuck at the setting up data link too when i don't have wifi enabled.
Anyway, when I use aroot, I don't need to add tether on my apn setting. Unless you are using super one click. Btw, all using soc should update to aroot to clean up the mess.
Updated: I still need to add tether on the apn after testing even I use aroot.

d-oh! i always tried enabling wifi after turning it on. now it works. thanks. but it still has a bug, because it won't let you disable hotspot if you don't turn on wifi first, you need a reboot
I still get stuck on setting up data link. I make sure wifi is enabled and when I click hotspot, wifi turns off. I rooted aroot over soc. Any ideas?
nvm I got it to work. Right after I selected hotspot, I pressed home and turned on wifi. That seemed to work.

I ended up adding "default, tether" to the APN type of my, manually entered, Rogers APN. This got the the tether working. Albeit it took a very long time for it to get the data network ready to use, but it worked. Perhaps the most disappointing thing is that the speed is ridiculously slow. On device, I get 3-6Mbps/380kbps, but via tethering the best I have been able to get is 500kbps/350kbps.
Anyone have any insight as to why the tethered speed is crushingly slow?

In a word, yes. The validation check seems to be checking if the tether type is there. I combed through the sqlite scripts and scoured the forums, etc.
The speed issue seems to be resolved today; it might have been a network issue.

[Q] Tethering capable on T-Mobile?

Was hoping someone could clarify something for me. In looking at the HTC One features chart on the T-Mobile site, it says it's Mobile Hotspot Ready but the "Tethering Capable" feature is unchecked. What does that mean? Can you tether your laptop using the included T-Mobile hotspot service or is something blocked?

You can tether your laptop with the stock TMO ROM. I just did it. However, the question of if you have Hotspot on your account is somewhat more complicated. It comes (at least in some form) with all the "new" plans.

[Q] New Tethering Issue With Refarmed T-Mobile LTE and unlocked Rogers Lumia

I pay for T-Mobile (US, on a Rogers Lumia) tethering, and it's been working great for me on HSPA+. Had to do the keyboard trick a few times to get it working since I installed Access Point some time ago, but otherwise fine.
A few days ago my area got refarmed with LTE, which gives a new indicator by the signal bar ('LTE') and also is resulting in some nice speeds.
The problem is, it's creating a new tethering issue. When I'm on an LTE signal and try to enable Internet Sharing, I get a message about 'not having a cell connection'. I do seem to have one, as I can make and receive calls just fine, and data works fine as well. This is a new message. If I'm in an area with just HSPA+ sharing works again.
Is this a Rogers ROM restriction, an Access Point restriction, or an issue on Tmo's end? Hopefully not the latter, I don't think I'm going to get anywhere with a rep on this issue.
Don't install Access Point app, it disables the internet sharing option.

Yeah, I realize that, and have been able to get around that message with the 'foreign keyboard' hack, but the message I'm getting now is different than that one, and the hack doesn't affect it.

Factory reset the phone, didn't install access point, same issue. I can enable tethering on 4G but as soon as I get an LTE signal, tethering is blocked in the Internet Sharing settings page with a message saying "no cell connection found" or something similar, even though I have both a working LTE connection and cell connection on the phone.
Rogers ROM issue, maybe?
Factory reset doesn't help?

I was thinking of doing a factory reset until I read this.
Has anyone found a workaround? I tried doing the tricks like resetting the APN or putting in a dummy APN and still, no joy.
Is this a Rogers ROM issue and is there an alternative to get Internet Sharing AND MMS working at the same time (other than the purchase of another phone)? TIA

I don't recall having MMS issues, though it's possible I never recieved any. The tethering fix I finally settled on was just switching back to '3G' in the cellular settings, which gets me 4G HSPA+ tethering which was good enough for my purposes. It's almost certainly a restriction of the Rogers ROM.

I tried the 3G tethering with reboot and it still gives me the upsell message.
Are there other ROMs that will work with the Rogers Lumia 920? Or will that brick the phone?
I remember with the Lumia 900 I could use a Mexican Firmware to get MMS and Tethering that worked great but I heard (months ago) of people bricking their Rogers 920s by putting on AT&T ROMs.

Do you get an upsell message, or a "cellular data not enabled" message?
For the former, installing and then removing a foreign language keyboard update via the keyboard settings will still work, if you actually do have T-Mobile tethering on your line. You still won't be able to tether on LTE though, because you'll get the "cellular connection not enabled message".

I've heard of people having success with the Euro Dev firmware, if you have an unlocked phone. Though after Nokia's locking-down of Naviform it's going to be harder to find that. And no, don't flash an AT&T ROM, it will screw you up.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.
The keyboard trick used to work perfectly but no longer works for me (I tried adding different ones and restarting, no joy).
I do pay for 500MB of tethering on T-Mobile USA and they insist it should work when I call. There is a problem with the phone that reads: "Add Internet sharing? Your current data plan doesn't include Internet sharing. Do you want to open an app from your mobile operator to add it? Internet sharing uses your cellular data and may incur additional charges 'yes' 'no'".
I didn't hear about Nokia locking down Naviform. Lame. Maybe I can find someone who has a copy that can do the firmware update for me.
Euro Dev firmware might be an option if I can find Naviform. Have to re-install Windows on my Mac Laptop via Bootcamp. Think I have to do a bit of work to pull one of the two hard drives and re-install the DVD drive which I pulled out a few weeks ago to have more space. Sadly, I deleted my Windows partition. :silly:
However... I never installed Access Point on my wife's Lumia 920 and her sharing works (though no reliable MMS). I may just swap phones with her since she never uses internet sharing.
one of the OTA updates fixed this

This was a known issue on the unlocked S8/S8+ as well. There were some semi-convoluted workarounds, but it wasn't as simple as a check box. I bought the unlocked version knowing full well I'd face some Verizon issues, but will likely be transitioning off them in a few months anyway.

Somebody on Crackberry forums posted a solution for wifi calling that ended up working for me, but I had to call Verizon as well. This may be more detailed than you guys need, but if you can find the app in GALAXY apps and use Lightflow, you're there. I don't know how the Voicemail works standalone, but I wanted the LED indicator and the sound of my choice. Voila !
This app is available through GALAXY APPS, not Samsung Apps. I got it to work, without rooting, using Lightflow as follows:
Open Lightflow
Choose Notification Settings
Choose red "+" plus sign at the bottom right
Choose "From System event, battery, gps, etc.
From "Select system notifications to add", roll down to Voice Mail, check the box, choose "Add"
This will add Voicemail to your Lightflow notifications list, and then you have to pick your settings for it.
On Lightflow's Notification page, find dark blue "Voicemail" and open the "three dots" to the right, choose "settings"
The setting menu is a "slide to the right" type menu. I used "light" , enable light, choose a color, etc. I chose dark blue to match the icon.
So now, I have a dark blue "Voicemail" icon in my apps, and Lightflow makes it chime the sound I chose and lights up the LED at the top of the S9, in dark blue, and it blinks, so I know a voicemail is there. It also shows up on the notification panel.
