When i'm in landscape mode taking photos, playing games.. i find that my palm is accidentally either launching the recent apps screen overlay (from pressing home key a few seconds) or launching the search key. I don't feel like im over doing it. I rest my palm on the bottom right corner. When i now pay attention, I try to hold the Evo 3D in landscape mode with my hands in two C formations facing one another.. so that i dont accidentally launch those quick keys.
Are any of you having this issue too? it's annoying to frame a photo.. and then the Recent Apps screen keeps coming up and I have to back up out of it. Would a case be helpful? possibly looking at one of the TPU cases when they get it back in stock. is there a way to adjust the sensitivity of the keys?
i've done all the OTA's available..
It's normal. Happened on my EVO 4G all the frakking time. You just need to be careful not to touch the capacitive button. You don't actually need to touch the button to activate capacitive button/screens, only be a few microns away.
I also have that problem I'm hoping root will fix it

ok thanks that is unfortunate.. that is exactly what is happening.. just barely a tap on the lower edge triggers it. Wish they could've moved the sensor away form the edge.
My otter box defender stopped that from happening to me. I know this may not be a solution you may like but I'm just throwing it out there. I need the case due to me working on cars as a hobby and I will lay down on my phone while under a car not even thinking about it.

Just wanted to update.. having a TPU case with the raised ridge on the bottom defintely is helping prevent the unwanted "ghost" launches from the Recent Items and Quick Search capacitive buttons.

Anyone else having light leak out at the bottom of the phone where the glass and plastic meet?

I have the same thing with mine. I had the same deal with the 4G so I'm use to it.

yes, there are a few threads already about this issue. some people are saying it is just the reflection of the bright ass lights on the heptic buttons bouncing off the lip of the case but i don't think it is. if i put something in between the buttons and the bottom of the phone i still see it. it doesn't bother me one bit. u have to be really anal to have this be a big issue.
Yea, I didn't think much of it. Didn't notice it till tonight. Sorry about the repost didnt see a main thread about it. = / I think I kinda like it tho, it rounds out the bottom of the phone. Is sorta a dock for the buttons. =}

Not really a issue for me its due to the bright ass keys I know what light leakage is I had it once on a refurbished EVO in the past. Happy the 3d no issue for me also the tpu case seems to work really well with it .
Stops that funky ass rattle u would get when typing on the on screen keyboard due to the camera button . First time I heard it was hoping it wasn't my glass on the screen coming apart had that happen on the EVO glue wasnt that good.
the capacitive buttons on my 3d are ridiculously sensitive! i dont even have to make contact with the glass to make them register as a button press, hovering over them is enough....
its getting rather annoying and im hoping the screen protector i ordered would help it a bit but does anyone else have the same problem?
Nope but I have a zagg on mine... Sometimes it seems I have to press the home button more firmly than others tho

Yup, hovering will sometimes trigger a press.. isn't a big deal to me though.

Yeah. Pretty freaking sensitive for me as well. Can be annoying sometimes.

i noticed it too
Also noticed that sometimes when i press, it senses my finger a bit below where i touch. but maybe it's just a problem i have with my fingers :/
I have the same problem with mine too, and i have a ZAGG on it. It annoys the crap outta me. But what can we do?
even with the screen protector, i still find that hovering will prompt a keystroke. another qualm that i have with the phone is the placement of the sensitive power button up top.. being left handed, i seem to be finding it often by mistake.
That's the one thing I never liked about HTC phones, they love to use capacitive buttons. I prefer a mechanical one that can't so easily accidently be touched.
My capacitive buttons are also very sensitive (just like my power button ). Sometimes it is annoying when I bump/hover over the home key in the middle of what I'm doing. Over all, I think the entire screen is more sensitive than the Evo OG, because there have been a number of times when my screen has registered a touch when I thought I was only hovering.
Maybe there's something like a build.prop value that we can adjust for touch sensitivity when we get rooted.

i hope so too because this hinders regular use quite a bit
The capacitive buttons are overly sensitive with my screen protector on, too. It seems like the buttons have too much juice running to them altogether. (Being too bright and too sensitive.)
On another note; Everyone always talks about their over-sensitive power button, but mine is completely the opposite and hard to find and push sometimes. Especially in the otterbox commuter case, which I'd have to recommend if you have that issue.
Many of you are having the problem where the back, home or menu buttons are insensitive and don't respond very well.
After some tests and confirmations, it is believed to be what is called 'hard capacitive buttons'.
What does hard capacitive mean? It means you have to press with a bit more force like the galaxy nexus.
Reason for hard capacitive buttons?
To prevent accidental pressing of them, thus requiring to use a bit more pressure. I makes sense now doesn't it?
please feel free to test and confirm for your own confirmations, hope this closes all the cases regarding the capacitive buttons issue!

Well, just to let you know people will have their issues regarding this problems forever. I have gone though two Xperia S and quality of buttons differ in one another. But either way never had to push too hard to activate it. Has been pretty good but this clarify things for people with questions again.
Thanks
I tried this method and i still couldn't get it all the time. The sliding worked better but why should it be that way? As an SE fan from W910, i wanted to love it but couldn't mainly for this reason.
I think overtime time people can get it right but SE did screw it up. Just like iPhone antenna issue there is way to not let it bother you. But there are just too many design flaws with this phone for my liking.

sliding my finger over the capacitive buttons works 100% of the time, so I prefer this method.
also this doesn't require a "hard press" I can just lightly slide my finger and it will register.

Noticed the difference myself going through the second Xperia experience...
Both phones are a bit different but the pressure used is the same.
Only the size of the capacitive buttons is different :-/

I wasn't aware there was a pressure activation?
I always swipe from the transparent bar up, works 100% no "pressure" or unresponsive problems at all. I use it just as swiping in an app
I don't consider this an -issue- its more of a learning curve .
I'm not convinced by this. I can activate them with an extremely light touch (I just tested this) but only if I do a slight swiping action.
Even a touch as light as I can use on the screen works on the buttons as long as I am in the right place.
A hard press probably just spreads your finger pad out more so you get the right area more easily
Within minutes of getting my XS I naturally started using the slide technique. Can't see an issue with the buttons myself. I get the occasional miss but nothing that causes an issue.
agree with slide on them . It works perfectly
The totally active space is above the dots ,between screen and dots .
I'm with slide since I got the phone. Works better.
I've had my XS for 2 weeks now and from day 1 I didn't have problems using the capacitive buttons. I miss occasionally but that happened also with other devices.
no the buttons has an issue, when you press softly it work sometimes sometimes dont same swiping and pressing hard so no one please try to fool your self here it just doesnt work like others do

Believe me if you use your phone for 2-3 weeks you will get used to it.
Now I don't miss any button.

Hy, the 3 sensitives buttons don't work if you slide your finger down ( screen to led bar ), but if you slide up ( led bar to the screen ) he respond immediatly.
If you come by the screen, you did to go up when you arrived on the level of the sensitives buttons.
If you just slide down buttons stay inactive.

My first day was annoying and frustrating, but
after 24-48 hours of use I never missed a hit again.
You get used to it pretty fast once you find the "g spot" and your brain learns to automate the task.
(hint: side dots upper medial, home dot slighty up)
Now it's piece of cake

I agree, i'm not sure about the pressure difference it might be possible, but i can also activate it with a light touch. And hard pressing results in touching with more surface, just like you said.
It also looks like the sensitive part is just a little above the dot.
The buttons do not always work, and we should not have to swipe.
Did Sony mention these buttons somewhere? manybe in the manual? lol
Maybe it is a problem just like the yellow screen is, but no one knows
Hi all, sorry my first post is asking for help, but I'm lost on this one.
It doesn't happen all the time, but I randomly get a dead spot on the bottom right corner of my phone.
It happens when I touch the app drawer, and the L key when I'm texting. It only randomly acknowledges I touched the screen.
Restarting the phone usually helps, but does that mean it's software or hardware?
Should I have it replaced?
Stock VZW Note II, no apps installed.
Ty for any and all help.
-edit-
It was replaced for a bad digitizer.
When using Multitouch visibility test, if you put more then 4 fingers on the screen, it locked up the phone requiring removal of the battery.
Perhaps instead of software, could it be heat?
It sounds like a dead/dying pixel to me. If it is only there on certain screens, then probably not, but if its there on say the boot screen or something, then I'd take it back.
silhet ingliil
I'm sorry I should have been more specific.
It's not a screen blemish.
It's when I go to tough the screen.
Like if I hit the L key on the keyboard during a text message, it will only register a touch like 50% of the time.
Or if I touch the app drawer, I have to hit it multiple times to open it up.
The actual screen is perfect, no dead or stuck pixels at all.

I'd return to Verizon, especially if you're not rooted so it won't be any trouble returning to stock etc.
It's probably mildly annoying to you now and it's only going to get worse over time. If there's no physical damage to the phone I don't see them giving you any trouble.

I actually called them, and they told me to just take it back to the store in case the replacement has issues.
Which is troubling to hear.
I have a youtube video demonstrating the problem, but I won't let me post it so ohwell.
Will have to wait til I get 10 posts.
Basically, using multitouch visibility test, I roll my finger around the bottom right corner while never lifting it off, and it won't recognise my trying to touch the specific spot.
After I life my finger and move it around the screen it will recognise the spot. It's very random.
Here's the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGl9RoBLpjA
-edit-
The youtube tags aren't working?
So what do you all think?
Hardware or software?
After further messing around in Multitouch Visibility test, I can replicate this all over the screen, but it's easiest to do at the bottom right corner where L shows up on the keyboard.

Nah, it was a bad digitizer they said.
Whenever you put multiple fingers on screen, it would lock up, and require yanking the battery to reboot.
When you notice this are you holding the S-pen? I noticed if you get the pen near the screen (close enough for air hover to work) that the screen and buttons quit working to touch. For a little while I thought the home button was having problems, turned out the way I was holding the pen would result in it being placed near the screen when I hit the button.

The main reason I noticed it was when I was texting.
Whenever I went to type words like sleep, or talk, they would be missing the letter L.
Or when I would go to open the app drawer, and it would only work half the time.
All while the pen was in the phone.
The lockup doesn't sound normal but as far as dead spots if you have a screen protector on have you tried removing it? Marginal screen protectors will cause touch input issues.
So I often found myself hitting the volume buttons instead of power (when not using tap on), so I got a TPU case and tapped a rubber band to the inside of the case (across the opening) so the rubber band covers the power button when the case is on. The rubber band forms a sort of grippy button such that my finger naturally goes right to the power button. It does lift the case up a little bit in the back, but the case stays on fine. I'm sure instead of the rubber band, you could use a piece of silicon or rubber, and glue instead of tape if you wish too.
Just figured I might share this with people who may be having similar power-button-seaking frustrations
Sounds like a great idea for those with difficulty - for myself - I love the buttons on the back! It was the main reason I got the phone because I was tired of grabbing my phone on the sides & always either changing the volume up or down or turning the phone off, etc. etc. Therefore, for me, the buttons on the back are just great & it almost gives me a sense of freedom to handle the phone without hitting the buttons on the sides.
However, I can see some people having a problem. Also, they could just feel with their finger, the bottom of the tpu case cutout & know that the bottom is volume down & then over the hump, is the volume up.
I stippled the power button on mine.
Example of stippling on a shotgun grip. The surface around it is how it normally is.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7262/6887983878_1d68bdd506_z.jpg
I do this for a lot of my other stuff, so I though I'd give it a try with some really fine stippling. It's great, gives me immediate clarity to which key is the right one, plus I can just slide my finger down and when it stops on the rugged surface I'm in the right spot. Also works with gloves, of course, as they also grip it.
First of all the title of this thread is pretty stupid. Who actually has trouble finding the power button on this phone?
Sent from my LG-D801 using Tapatalk
By finding he obviously refers to when you're holding the phone its not as obvious as it can be with the button on the side. You sometimes find yourself hitting what you think is the power button, but might be an edge next to it or such.
If you don't have the issue that's great, but a lot of others do, especially since most of us are used to using our thumb for it, on sidebutton.
PS. If you're going to do the "First of all"-approach, you should probably have more than one point to present.
