[Q] Maps 5.6.2 cripples Android... - Optimus One, P500, V General

Here's a little something I discovered after flashing Gingerbread 2.3.3 and updating Maps (and its associated Google Apps) to 5.6.2 . If you use Maps or Navigation, after a while (even while in sleep mode; if you use Latitude it will happen faster), the phone will suddenly start lagging.
A quick trip to SetCPU tells me that the phone sits at 100% usage (max CPU frequency, ondemand governor). I then attempt to run Watchdog Task Manager - it fails to collect data. adb top reports a User usage of 80%, System usage of up to 20% - and the usage of ALL the apps in the list do not by FAR sum up to 100%. The only solution is a reboot (I can't say anything about the Battery usage screen, as the phone was charging while I did all this).
To my greatest relief, if you don't use Maps, Latitude or Navigation, the usage stays completely low (not sure of an exact value, but low enough so that setCPU reports the current CPU frequency as the minimum one, again, ondemand governor). Am I the only one with this issue? I'm using the official 2.3.3 ROM customized by doktornotor and the OCable kernel posted by mansirawat.

If you start gps, maps is running.
This with the fact that igo voice sound with interrups, made me to go back to Froyo.

I didn't even TRY any other navigation software (partly because I don't really need navigation, and partly because I was scared the bug might come up again... I nearly had a heart attack when the CPU was on max for a few seconds after using Foursquare! ). But I am not going back to Froyo after trying out the Bass Booster in the Equalizer app!

TTPod Player is my new best friend. 10-band EQ works perfectly with Froyo, Kernel 2.6.32.9
very stable.
I'm sensitive to this post because I'm going to try freezing latitude - it is a pig

Battery life

Hi Everyone,
is it just me or since flashing your phone battery life is not that long?
i own x10a, i running not timescene stuff all wifi, gmail, email is all turned off. I just run the bare minimum hardly place games. use it to only text message and make calls and i just fully charged my phone last night and now it already used 1/4 of the battery from 5 text messages this morning. the phone is brand new. just got it last thursday. any ideas?
- reduce display brightness and time to turn off
- disable power-hungry features (wifi, gps, bluetooth, even gsm at certain time) - you can do that automatically using tasker and his 'wifi near', 'gsm cell near' action contexts
- use SetCPU to dynamically scale processor speed, it is probably enabled by default but setcpu gives you a way to configure it. rooting needed.
also, reducing cpu usage can help reduce battery usage:
- edit autostart and disable programs that you dont need to have in memory (for example, i dont know why titanium backup places in the autostart and is loaded, and no feature of it is needed for me in realtime so i disabled it)
- task killers can *probably* help by automatically cleaning up programs that reside in memory after using them. i think that some poorly written apps can use CPU even in background and even when they do nothing

hi thanks for the reply, yes i now notice when i reduced my brightness it has stoped chewing battery. when i get SetCPU will that allow me to configured the autostart application on my xperia x10?
i dont really know what you mean.
SetCPU sets cpu clock downsteping on specified profiles (for example display off - set cpu 284 mhz to 384 mhz)
Autostart managers allow removing programs that put themselves on autostart, like on ms windows you know . of course you can always launch them later with your touch )
type "autostart" on android market to browse and see what they can do.
SetCPU is either on market or XDA x10 forums - use forum search.
good luck!

Hi Devein,
sorry i am still having an issue with this application i power up the app and asks me to select my phone, i select auto detec because my phone is not listed, then it has a green scroll bar in the middle, i do not know how to setup profiles. and set this autostart manager you talk about.
thanks.
I figured it out thanks.
No problem: D
i am really disappointed though with the battery life of the x10. such an short battery life compared to what was stated.
Something weird has happened to my phone.. I was getting easily 16 hours off 60% charge.. then in the last 3-4 days it's dive bombing.. I'm down to 63% remaining from full charge after 5 hours... and haven't used it a lot..
Tried removing any new apps I've installed this week.. and also switched mobile data off as I've noticed that I've started getting a weak 3G signal at home and thought this might be the problem.. but doesn't seem to have slowed it down..
I'm on R2BA026 and not rooted.. I've not changed anything else..
Tempted to do a FDR it's that bad.. but I know that I'll get the 2.1 update in the next 2 weeks so really don't want to have to go through the pain of setting it all up again and then have to do it again when 2.1 lands!
The problem seems to have started when I did a test of using Moxier to get Hotmail Push.. but I've got rid of that now, and have cleared all the moxier data..
Confused!. Anyone?
(EDIT - Fixed it - for some reason Moxier still had data in it.. so deleted the data within App management and it's been ok since)
Check out my tutorial on getting the most out of Xperia X10 battery.
Most of the things have already been pointed out above. But, you still might come across a few tips not covered here in my tutorial.
As with iceman, most of the time it's some naughty app that causes all the trouble.

[Q] Background Apps and cpu usage

The vibrant is my first android phone, so apologies if I am simply ignorant.
Anyways, my battery life has been sucky lately (as compared to what it used to be).
I generally listen to streaming radio on my way to and from work. At work I oocasionally check email, play wordfued or send text messages. I used to get home with 60-70% charge left. Lately I have been lucky to get home with 40% left.
The change is that I am now running the Franekn-twiz rom and before I was running jfd or ji5. At first I assumed the difference was simply due to the new rom and was considering going back to stock when I noticed something odd.
I opened the samsung task manager included since ji2 and I noticed that Rom Manager was in red and said to be at 30+ cpu usage. It quickly changed to 0%, then to 2%, then 4%, then 0. It jumped arround a lot, but it was definitely doing something. I looked further and noticed that astro was was also fluctuation and getting to as high 13% cpu usage.
I had not used either application since yesterday. I killed them both.
When I restart either and then exit it (with the home button) I get the same thing again. Not trusting the samsung manager, I looked in the System Panel Light app and it also shows these apps using cpu in the background.
I know of no reason why either app should be using cpu, and I can't find a setting in tierh to stop it. Also, Rom Manager does not have an exit option, so I *have* to use a task manager to kill it to stop the cpu usage.
Please help me understand:
1. is there a valid reason for these apps to be using cpu when they shouldn't be doing anything?
2. Is there an easy way to fix this?
3. How can I figure out if this is a problem wit my phone, the rom, the apps, or something else?

What do you do to keep your Eris fast?

At boot, once I close everything, I keep 80mb of ram free. (besides what I need.)
I have auto task killer set to aggressive, every 30 minutes. Phone is generally fast, however sometimes everything just gets restarted at once. Phone crawls until autotask killer does its magic again. These are default GAPPS and the like. I love maps, gmail, and the like, but I'm damn near ready to delete them.
Is there anything I can do?
(overclocked to 710, any higher and the phone gets slow as soon as it gets warm, anything lower doesn't help at all)
Maybe I'm missing something. I come from a blackberry, before that a windows phone. Task killing was important, I've read that it isn't so here. But I just don't know what to do to keep my phone from going into a crawl.

They really aren't so important here, and most ROM's already come overclocked with task killers and/or governors.
What ROM are you using?
Do you have alot of widgets on your homescreen?
The only time I've had your problem is when I had like a total of 5 homescreens COMPLETELY filled with widgets.

Personally, I used to use the task killers a lot, and while on 2.1 I think it helped a little. But as I switched around different froyo ROMs and am now on gingerbread, I noticed that the task killers actually hindered my phone's performance. Battery would discharge quickly, the phone would become sluggish and sometimes lag so bad I would reboot.
I found that just leaving the android system to do its own thing worked out the best. Memory management has been greatly improved, and really eliminated the need for task killing apps and the like.
Always good reading:
"FAQ: Why You Shouldn’t Be Using a Task Killer with Android"
"Multitasking the Android Way"
"Android Task Killers Explained: What They Do and Why You Shouldn’t Use Them"
Using Gingerbread, clocked at 604mhz. CPU governor ondemand. (Bump it to 748mhz and interactive for heavy games)
No killers, although I used to be religious about autokiller memory optimizer. GB handles memory and app killing very well.
And the stock app management tool loads quick and is easy to use to kill something that's acting naughty or hung.
I use cache cleaner, set to clean once a day.
I am picky about my apps. If I don't like their startup and shutdown behavior, I find an alternative program.
I'm also rather anti social so no twit, face, up ur butt, whatcha doing apps constantly syncing for me.
I do use genie for news and weather and smooth calendar synced with my exchange via gmail. But these don't update but one every 3-4 hours. Gmail on demand unless I'm expecting something, then I'll let the sync run.
Used to be an adw fanboy. But switched to LP. Its simple and light. Adw is still my favorite especially EX, but LP performs better for me.
I also uninstall everything I don't use, email, dpm, stock music, HTML viewer, setup wizard, keyboard tutorial, development, rom manager, carhome, couple other none dependencies. Use that free space to more some of my root apps, widget apps, utilities.
Also use. Zach's cache2cache. Freeing up a little more data room. No apps on SD.
Widgets I use; note everything 3+ Widgets, genie news and weather, smooth calendar, a photo slide widget app. Usually about it. Sometimes a full month calendar.
No lag or performance loss. My daily usage averages 4 to 6 hours a day.
Edit - also turn off orientation if I don't need it to keep my screen from redrawing every time I pick upmy phone or adjust my wrist

I do as little as possible.
I kill some tasks when my phone first starts up, that's the only time I use my task killer unless a program is glitching out.
I keep setcpu profiles.
I keep my apps up to date.
I keep my ROM up to date.
After installing/ uninstalling a lot of programs (Such as when I first flash a new rom) I always make sure I Wipe my dalvik cache.
I always wipe between ROMs. It's more stable and always faster.
I suggest to keep your phone fast you DONT:
use setcpu's widget.
use autotaskkiller (it's just one more process. And once you kill tasks, there's no reason to continuously re-kill persistent ones)
Clear your cache too often. Your cache is there for a reason. I personally never clear mine, just my dalvik.
Dedication

Just an update. I used the majority of advice here. Installed watchdog. After about 4 days worth of running and watchdogs help I just Uninstalled Google Reader and Facebook. Never have to kill a task and everything runs smooth now.
Thanks!

Contrary to what most people will tell you, I use a Task Killer and some will call me a liar but I see a very good improvement on my battery life. As soon as I'm done doing whatever I was doing on my phone, I open Advanced Task Killer and kill every task running then lock my phone (press the end button) and tuck it away. People say it doesn't work but everyone's Eris is different and reacts different to different apps. I love having it and I love using it. I usually go in to cyanogenmod settings and use the overclocker, 748Max, 122Min, Ondemand gov, set to boot. I also use LauncherPro Plus which seems to be faster and smoother than ADW therefore using less power. I also have absolutely no widgets whatsoever. Wifi is only on when I'm home and GPS is never on unless I'm using navigation. That's really about it and my Eris runs smooth as a baby's backside !!

2.3.5 ROMs (all) and battery drain

There is a problem in every 2.3.5 ROMs (I tested everyone of them...even gingerdx v13).
The problem is due to "google maps" app...
If the app isn't freezed (by titanium) or unistalled, the problem persist.
The problem starts when open "maps". After that, some processes of "maps" start to drain battery....the only thing to do in order to temporally solve this problem, is reboot the phone.
I don't know if is in the app itself or in the way that the ROMs manage it...but It's present and It's a major and annoing bug.
Please try to solve it.
A smartphone with android and gps is useless without maps! ^^
But old gingerbread roms had not this problem, im wondering why it occcurs now.

I don't know...I had froyo ROMs before...no problems with maps!
yup even i am having huge battery drains on the gingerdx rom...
i tried freezing a lot of apps, but was not able to narrow down the causative app..
I figured out that i get a lot of wakelocks by time service
MauriF , how did u figure app that google maps was causing the drain?
I don't have battery drain problems (never had since I logged out of Latitude).
I also tested EVERY rom posted (froyo and gingerbread) and they all had similar battery duration, and no unexplained drains...
Im on ginger dx v13, I found if you listen to music and then stop the music player, some services are still running and it kills your battery so I just reboot the fone and its fine, I also froze dps manager and google maps. If you read the origanal topic on ginger dx it tells that the music player drains your battery. People must except that there will be bugs.
Sent from my U20i using xda premium
The music player bug IS a bug.
The maps problem isn't. Yes Maps drains the battery but its because you have done one of the following:
Have GPS on
Have enabled an app to see your location: could be browser, latitude, search etc
Have turned on 'My Location' in Settings -> Locaton and Security
Have allowed maps to cache in background: check by opening maps -> more -> cache settings
Android needs to open apps to all of these things, its not the ROM as far as i can see.
Sorted it out for me on GingerDx v11
x drsood,
Using Titanium i freezed maps = no battery drain
enabling it = battery drain (I mean 3% each 5 minutes)
...even if the app is not started.
maybe the problem is one that Dan is saying! I need to check..
x Dan,
I charge battery than I'll check! Thank You very much!!

i have the "maps" as well as "dsp manager" frozen...still i have this battery drain...i know its not a rom problem coz many have reported that they hav excellent battery life, but i cant figure out the app causing all these drains
unistalled "maps 5.9.0" (always some services active...huge battery drain), installed "maps 5.0" (no services active!)
Now I test battery again!
Yeah that's exactly i want to say Maps drain battery so much only 3 hours my phone use up all !
mmm...it's not only maps....
this night in 7h mt battery is at 41% :-/
Check whats running services then. Settings -> Applications -> Running Services
Will probably tell us your problem

i dont have maps but stiil battery drain
and minicm6 (2.2.9) only drains around 7% battery during night
Thank you for usefull info.
I unistalled maps and now my battery last 3 times more. I was impressed.
I found that, using D4Kernal, the battery life extends quite a bit. I got a whole 24 hours out of the phone yesterday which is a first.
just a suggestion
In my experience excessive battery drain can be caused by 3 causes:
1)Apps running in background
Some apps consume more battery than others. the best way to see in my experience is install apps atleast 12H apart so that you can tell which app is causing drain. Google maps process does run forever in background. To stop pit, Go to settings--> applications-->manage applications-->(click on Maps APP)-->click Force Stop. This has to be done everytime you reboot your phone. For a permanent thing, try freezing in Titanium
2)Battery callibration:
While Li-Poly batteries like the BST38 in the x10 minipro dont need full depth charging, the battery measurement needs it.
Try this(need root)
Charge phone to 100%
(Install "Battery callibration" app from Market and click "Callibrate battery")
OR
(Boot into CM Recovery and erase Battery stats)
Once Battery is 100% charged, unplug and discharge to 0%(If you dont have patience for this turn on google maps with GPS, turn on Wifi and play music on your loudspeaker. My battery drained in 1.5 hrs with this usage )
Once Battery is discharged to 0(i.e phone shuts off), Recharge to 100% and use as normal.
After doing this I get around 70+ Hrs of standby in GingerDX v013. This process NEEDS to be done everytime you install a new custom ROM.
3)Ruined Battery:
If you have too much drain in ALL ROM's...including the stock ROM, OR, none of the above steps work, then the battery is probably faulty. There's nothing you can do about it but get a new one
All the best!
EDIT:
4) Network signal strength:
If the signal strength by the service provider is low, your phone will try to amplify it to achieve higher clarity. Unfortuntely this consumes higher power. Your body also absorbs some radiation hence requiring even higher amplification. My recommendation is unless you are moving around, keep your cell outside (On your desk or something). You'll get slightly better signal strength plus if some studies are to be believed you'll be more fertile and smarter and your heart will be healthier too
Hey,is it makin any big difference btween stock and D4's Kernel?

Essential apps and setup on GBX0* + 3.4.26.13 kernel - update 02/01/13

I've been using GBX0* + 3.4.26.13 kernel for sometime on my uk rhod100. I know that it's not recommended for rhod100 but I have found it to work very well (a big thanks to the developers - hopefully the bug with bluetooth causing occasional reboots will be solved soon). After some reading around and experimentation I have found a setup that I am very happy with. Below I share my current setup in the hope that some find it useful. I stress that none of this is original and can be found scattered around the forums.
Initial Installation
Firstly, when installing the ROM I remove all the apks from the system/app directory that I have no use for. The apps I have removed without any detrimental effects are:
Bluetooth (I belive this is only required for file transfers via bluetooth which has never worked with any xdandroid build on my device)
GenieWidget (News and weather widget I never use but does cause device wakeups and launches when a data connection is found even if not used)
HTMLviewer
LatinimeTutorial
Mediauploader
PinyinIME (chinese android keyboard input)
Protips
Talk (Gtalk - never used this)
Vpnservices
I also uninstall launcher2 once I have installed an alternative after flashing (Lightning launcher with the least demanding settings and no wallpaper, as few widgets as possible and one screen is recommened)
Performance
The [[Speed Improvements]] Brainstorming & Testing Thread!! is full of useful tips and advice however was started sometime ago. I did use the V6 supercharger script for some time with good results however I now use and application called Android Tuner from the play store. With this app I can do many of the tips and tweak from the convenience of an app. I use it to do the following
1. Contolling the CPU frequency for overclocking. Stable upto 710MHz on my device
2. Controlling OOM settings (I use 8,16,32,64,96,128)
3. Controlling startup apps
4. Turning off the receivers for GoogleServicesframework
5. Performing tasks like FixPermissions / Clearing System caches / Wipe Davlik etc.
The app does a whole load more (changing SD cache / changing SysCtl settings/allowing uninstalling of system apps) - if people have other setup tips please share
I have also recently started using an app called Seeder (available for free to xda members) which seems to improve general performance. I am in the early stages of trying this but it does seem to help a bit. The reviews generally seem positive but the manner in which it works is debated. Any other experiences of this app would be appreciated. One drawback is claimed to be a decreased batter life - I have not seen this.
Battery Life
All the usual stuff re screen brightness and timeout apply here as well as data connections etc.
I have been using an app called One Power Guard which does seem to improve battery life mainly during standby without any discernible decrease in performance. This app causes various system and kernel tweaks,
Disabling data connections etc is well known to help improve battery life but I have also found a big difference by turing off Use Wireless networks in the Location and Security Settings.
A second battery with this ROM is recommended and I am very happy with the Mugen 1800mah battery.
Essential Apps
Notification Toggle by j4velin I would say is a must. It allows shortcuts (for apps and settings) and toggles (like CM7.2) for system settings to be placed in the notification area. With the rhod100 not reconnecting the wifi networks after a screen off having a rapid toggle function is essential. Highly recommended and light weight,
Leo AGPS injector app by tytung is essential for speeding up GPS locks. From reading around when using this app first extablish a data connection, then turn on GPS and then run the widget. Definitely speeds up GPS lock times. (Use GPS test to check)
Clock Sync by sergey baranov is another essential for preventing clock drift. Also I have read that an accurate clock time can improve GPS lock times so another reason for this app. As in the xdandroid FAQ I have it set to sync every hour. It may also be beneficial to change the NTP server to a local one.
That concludes my round up of my current setup. Please contribute any other tips that I have missed out. The above have only been tried with this ROM and work well on my Rhod100, I hope this is of help to someone.
Thanks akk29, very useful. I have now tried some of the things you have, some I will get around too as I play more and find more out (eg, controlling startup apps, uninstall inglauncher, GoogleServicesframewor). I'm constantly turning my backlight up/down - is there a fix for doing this automatically?
The jury is out as whether I'll switch back to WinMo... I love all the new apps I've got that WinMo just doesn't have.
The biggest problem, (at least I think it's what's causing problems), is speed (I'm running ok at 787 MHz at the moment!). The phone doesn't want to know about the Facebook App - it says it's loading it, but then bombs out after thinking for quite a while. Also it's very fussy about touching the screen. Trying to type using the screen keyboard is almost impossible. I love the hardware keyboard (which is why I've got the TP2), but sometimes I just need a quick soft-key entry. And whether I pressed a button or not, only time would tell.
But I'll use it and play with it for a little while longer, and most probably become too reliant on all the android apps to revert back!
[I had a WinMo tweak for boosting the volume which made my phone very loud, but now it seems quite quiet, especially playing songs]

That's a old kernel/rom. Try the newer release like the 3.4.41 kernel.
Autobrightness was fixed in 3.4.26.
WizardKnight, I am using 3.4.35 Kernel - I've got a RHOD100, so the 41 didn't work very well (which is a shame, as fps has increased in that build). Thanks for the note about the autobrightness (looking at the changelog I have it working now I turn off/on the LCD).
Anyone had better luck with the Facebook app / integration?
