Which version of Wireless Tether for Root for Thunderbolt? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted Thunderbolt running DasBAMF 2.1 with the MR2.5 radio and I was wondering what version of Wireless Tether for Root is working best for most people? I only ask because I've noticed that certain version work better for certain phones and ROM's.

I've been using wireless tether 2.0.7 for a while now on a couple different roms. Download from 4shared.com

...or just download from somewhere less shady like the actual developer's website (for free I might add).

I use Wireless Tether v3.0-pre14. It seems to work very well for me. Im also running BAMF 2.1 with MR2.5 radio. Here's the link from developer's website.

Cool... I have the last 4 or 5 downloaded from the Dev site I mainly wanted to see what others are using before I start with the whole trial and error stuff. I really appreciate the feedback.

Sirius/Xm Radio APK

Not sure how many sirius fans are out there but I love it on my vibrant and you can use it on 3g or wifi. If it has already been posted my apologies. I am using it on Bionix1.2 rom and it works flawlessly
Thank you! I had no idea that SiriusXM was available for Android. I looked all over Market, several third party apps but nothing official. Why don't they publish it on Market?
Not really sure I was looking for a while, once I found it I subscribed to the online subscription and it has been working great!!
App is ok... no best of channels and no froyo support

No best of channels (never really listen to any of those stations so that would not effect me, but for some I am sure it will) but i was using this app on my N1 with 2.2 and it worked great...
I wish this was free....

Well you could constantly keep changing and adding different emails and get the free service.......
Thanks! I had it already, but it would never work on 3g. At least it didn't the first 3 months it was out.
Our 'basic' lifetime account is not good enough...they require the premium account and more money for the latest apk to work on froyo on my g2.....there should be a simple free stream app for basic accounts....
Works perfect on my G2 which is running stock 2.2 (froyo). It does an additional download for froyo and then works great!

Believe it or not I have tried this on an Apad from china. One of the earliest models running 1.6 and it works flawlessly. Thanks!
1.1 requires the premium subscription....Is there an android version that will work with the basic subscription?

Is Verizon blocking installs of tethering apps on 2.3?

A handful of my co-workers on various Verizon Android phones were saying that Gingerbread updates stop tethering apps from working, even if rooted and side-loaded.
I would like to try CM7 since it just released, but I can't lose my tethering! Am I worrying about nothing?
I'm using WiFi tether on CM7 and it works fine. You shouldn't have to worry since CM7 is not built by Verizon or anything, so they can't block tethering apps in the OS.

Good to hear! I'll probably give CM7 a whirl once it's stable.

Can you link the wifi tether you use please, and let me know if you changed any settings. I'm rocking MIUI, not sure if that matters or not but doesn't hurt to try.
Thanks

I'm using this WiFi tether app: http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wifi_tether_v3_1-beta2.apk
Once installed, I went to the settings, and changed the Device-Profile to Google NexusOne. Works great and it shouldn't matter if it's CM7 or MIUI.
I'm on the newest miui using wifi tether app with no problems

They are blocking tethering on stock roms, so if you are running CM7/MIUI etc you will be fine.
You may have to sideload. Verizon asked Google to hide certain apps, like PDAnet, from the market. This violates their net neutrality agreement, and they are being sued over it. Verizon stock updates are also set to tattle on you if you tether. If running touchwiz, I believe you need a modified kernel with dummy tether.

For devices the Verizon is giving an official Gingerbread build, they are slipping in ways to disable Wireless Tether. It's also hidden in the market, but it's easy to find an APK to install yourself. However, if you're running Gingerbread on the fascinate, you're doing it on a custom ROM, which doesn't have that nasty bit of Verizon code.

I am 99% certain I know the answer to this, but I just want to be 100% sure;
I am running SuperClean 3 Milestone 1, TW Launcher, and KGB Kernel with Voodoo enabled on my Fascinate. I just installed http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk, but haven't tried it yet. Is Verizon going to know if I am tethering with this configuration?
Thanks!
I think it honestly depends.
If you are using it to seach the web and do basic surfing than i dont think it matters to them.
If you start streaming Netflicks at HD quality or Bit Torrents [heavy bandwidth], they might suspect something.
I have used both the wifi tether and barnacle on ICS and GB for quick and dirty usage and i have never had VZW say a thing to me.
That is just my personal experience.
My $0.02:
I am running SC3 Milestone 2 and the KGB FA16 Kernel and have had no trouble tethering with my tablet or laptop using wifi tether 3.1 Beta 6.
You can pick your Beta flavor for the app using the link CCampos provided.
I have not tethered. Though I want to. (Hotspot feature) don't want Verizon to suspect something and then charge me.
Can't they charge me if they find out?
If I'm running CM7, will they still know?

My (very limited) understanding as of right now is that a custom ROM alone is not enough to keep Verizon in the dark. A think you need a custom kernel as well to be safe, and never use the Verizon hot spot app. Am I right?

All other discussion aside, clockwork mod has put a new app out that allows usb tethering without root on any ROM and can not be blocked by any carrier. Just search cwm or clock work mod in the market

Maybe Verizon can't block you from tethering with this app, but can they monitor if you are? And then hit you with a charge later, or drop you from service?
My. 02 cents.....I use an App called Open Garden Wifi with no problems at all.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Just throwing this out there: I've never seen any *confirmed* reports of Verizon retroactively charging customers for "illegal" tethering, or ending your service/contract. Not sure why people get so worried about getting caught, it's not like the phone police are gonna come take you to jail.
If I'm wrong on this and Verizon is in fact charging those who tether (who don't pay Verizon's tethering charge) or terminating their contracts, I'd love to see evidence to the contrary.
I ran up 18 gb last month. From Xbox live and other teathering because its my only access. Never have issues.

[Q] tethering thunderbolt free

so what's the easiest solution to get tethering to work for someone who updated firmware of the phone to latest version to get rid of random reboots?
how would one get tethering to work? do i have to root it? can i do it somehow without rooting it? like there was a hack for droidx or something similar?
and if root the only one choice which is best tested app to use for that?

Root and use wireless tether
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
two options really...
First... If you are STOCK, then pay VZW to add the Mobile Broadband Connect feature (aka Mobile Hot Spot) to your account, and use the Built in Mobile Hot Spot app.
Why do this? you don't have to root or anything.. and you wan to abide by VZW's Terms of Service (TOS).
Second.. If you are rooted and/or using a custom rom, then use the link that Deltaechoe posted to install "Wifi Tether for Root"
Why do this? You just want to tether and don't care about VZW's TOS, or you accept any possible consequences for violating VZW's TOS should they decide to take action (I'm not saying VZW will do anything, but there is always that chance so use at your own risk... And I'm not going to debate if its right, wrong, ok, not ok, etc).

wifi tether help

Hi guys,
Im trying to help a friend, He has the Verizon Samsung Fascinate, the phone is rooted, has super user. I Dl'd and installed the Android wifi tether 2.07apk from the google dev site. started up the app. started tether without issue, looked on my Toshiba Thrive Tablet, found the android tether wifi, tried to connect and message pops up on my tablet stating something about adhoc is not supported.
I have a Droid Incredible running Nil's sense 3.5 rom and have the same android tether app, I can start up tethering, turn tethering on, connect and surf the web on my tablet, with no mention of the adhoc compatibility thing.
Im not up on Samsung devices, I have always had HTC phones. So im not sure if this a Samsung issue or what.
I compared his tether app settings to mine and both are the same.
Im at a loss here and could really use some advice about how to fix the issue.
Thanks
Hitch
Try downloading the newer version 3 beta 6 from here http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...tail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta6.apk&can=2&q=
Be sure to go into settings and change device-profile to samsung fascinate.
It may work with that version...

Thanks for moving the thread, I had posted another topic in the Q&A.
The good news is 96 people have read the post, the bad news is not one person posted any ideas, This usually happens when you cannot post in the rooted section.
Still hoping someone has some ideas to help out.

Which rom is installed? Is it just stock Touchwiz with root? I ask because if your friend is willing to try CM7, the built-in tethering works beautifully.

its called Evil Fascinate from the samsung galaxy forums. I told him he needs to start getting his roms from here, he just rooted for the first and has a lot to learn.
I know he likes roms that are really themed, If you any suggestions for a stable, themed rom that has tether baked in I will flash it for him and see if he likes it.
Thanks

can't he just download opengarden tether or barnicle tether from market or am I missing something?

I have tried barnicle, but We get the same message when trying to connect from our tablet to the phone (AdHoc is not supported) and it wont connect, no matter what tether app I try I get the AdHoc not supported message.
I dont get this message when tethering my tablet to my Droid Incredible.
Thats why I was thinking it had to do with Samsung firmware, but I really have no idea and Im hoping that you Samsung guys can get my friend fixed up.
An easier question might be "what tether app do you use on your Fascinate"
Hitch
I use open garden, but I have never tried tethering to a tablet...only pc's.
Meh, easy fix for the ad-hoc thing. In wifi tether (I use pre10, 6 should work) go to settings, set your device profile to Google NexusOne and your setup method to Netd (master) and it will run in infrastructure mode and run fine. Tablets will connect and receive internet.

Best, most reliable wired tethering app/method?

I am about done with OpenGarden. Works flawlessly at times, then randomly disconnects me ever after still saying I'm connected. I am wanting to know what the best and most reliable wired tethering app is out there?
I have a Thunderbolt, rooted, with Liquid 3.2 installed.
Switch to thunderstick and it works perfect

The stock Mobile Hotspot app works just fine.
I do not want to switch roms....everything is working great for me on Liquid 3.2.
Stock mobile hotspot will want you to pay if you use it won't it?

Yeah that new kush wired tether is garbage just like pdanet and klink. You have to install stuff on every pc you wanna use it on. Ohhhhh wired tether in the description through me off. I suggest scrapping liquid 3.2. It has a couple bugs that they aren't concerned with and has been totally abandoned. Open Garden is the best WiFi tether out there. Try channel 5 and 6 with ThunderShed 1.5. Never had a problem. Was using it today. I recommend wired-tether 1.4 from code.google. So much faster than WiFi. And I loved liquid 3.2 but too many bugs with tethering and a few other must haves.
Good luck.
