Is anyone else noticing the capacitive buttons remaining lit and extremely bright during video playback, games, everything really?
Yes, this issue has been discussed a significant amount of times. Nothing can be done to change it unfortunately. There is a way to turn off the buttons, but they will be off until you turn them back on.
It requires an app from the market. It is called Screen Filter.
There's also an app called LEDs Hack that let's you completely turn off capacitive buttons but guess what, you need root LOL.

I actually really like that feature...
Actually, there is a way to turn those off without root. Search for an app called "screen filter" in the market. You can leave the screen filtering at 100% and turn off the capacitive button backlights.

I really wish the Vibrant had hard buttons like the G1. To make matters worse, the soft buttons turn off the backlight very quickly. In the dark, it's impossible to hit the right button. I have had the phone for 6 weeks now and I still don't hit the right button. I have looked all over to see if there was some setting that I can use to at least keep it lit while the phone is on. But I haven't found one. I saw someone mention that this is possible on another site. I'd love to know how if it really is possible.
I believe that I read somewhere that there isnt a way to keep softbutton backlight lit without someone making a custom kernel for it.

Yup. Goto settings > sound&display > keyboard timeout and change it to "Same as Screen timeout"
'tuna
Went there, there is no keyboard timeout selection.

Right, no keyboard timeout option.
I kinda have the OPPOSITE request. I'd like to keep the bottom buttons from lighting up at all. I use my phone a lot to read ebooks in the dark, with the screen set to black and the font set to a dim white, screen brightness all the way down. The soft buttons do not match screen brightness, so every time I scroll the page while reading, the four buttons at the bottom light back up and are blindingly bright! I HATE IT! If they weren't so bright it wouldn't be a problem, but I'd like to see a way to disable them completely so they never come on. I know where the buttons are (c'mon it's not that hard) and so I really don't need to be blinded like that.
Is there any program or other way do turn off the screen LEDs for example when docked at night? LEDs Hack from the market has an option for Hero with Froyo. Have tried that and it works except the row of LEDs with the home menu back and search buttons. I emailed the developer, but didnt know if anyone here had any solutions. I'm running KF v35 btw.
sorry double post
Why don't you just turn the face of the phone down? That's what I do and the lights don't bother me anymore. The speaker for the alarm is on the back of the phone anyway.

That's what I do now, but I was looking at replacing my clock on my bedside table with a dock that would hold the phone upright so I could see the time. I can keep the display on, but wanted the bright lights on the front off. With the program I mentioned, I can turn off all LEDs except the white ones behind the keys mentioned.

Oh. I didn't quite understand what you were trying to do. I'll look into it and see what I can find.

I was trying to use this app with some success. I tried all the different phones. One of the first times I tried it, the LEDs all went out and would not come back on. Did a reboot and dalvk wipe which restored the LEDs. The Hero version can stop all LEDs except the leds i mentioned. Thanks for the help.\

please post if you find a solution, i have the same desire...
Still haven't heard back from the developer. I will let you know if i can find something else online.
also found this program: http://www.andbot.com/apps/tools/simple-led-toggle/com.squakmt.SimpleLedToggle but it states it will not work on verizon droid phones. :-(
my workaround. I can use http://www.androlib.com/android.application.net-geekherd-softbuttonshack-wmjD.aspx to turn off the leds except the lights as mentioned above. under settings->cm->userinterface->auto backlight->use custom to "on" ->edit other levels set all of the buttons column to "0". This will turn off the front lights i was referring to whenever the brightness is set to auto. I use the powercontrol widget and set brightness to auto when I want to have the lights off and to low when I want the brightness down but front lights on. It would be awesome to have an app like a toggle to turn the leds off combining the leds hack and the cm setting. unfortunately, i can only write code in html and some flash and java and even those skills are getting rusty...lol.
edit: with the program listed above, phone set to sprint hero, top led, bottom led, and trackball leds selected the leds will all go out. however, the trackball will not blink with this setting. when option to turn leds on is selected, the leds come on as they should after a few minutes.
I say save your $25 and prop that mofo up, with a sock or something covering the bottom lights.

Well, the program is free, but my dock was about $25 and broke after the first day. Lets hear it for poorly made parts. I contacted the seller through amazon. We shall see what happens.
I have the app called 'Screen off and lock' which when used makes the screen act like an old tv turning off
Is there a way to link the action to the power button?
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I use this as well ,, Don't think it can be done but the idea of the app is so you do not have to use the power button and saves wear and tear on the button so they say
If you have tasker, do what i do.
Set an action where the app "screen off and lock" would be linked with the proximity sensor.
That way, all you have to do is swipe your fingers accross the proximity sensor, and your device's screen should turn off where its visually appealing + you don't have to press the power button anymore. Might be irritating if you were to accidently do it though.
You could set it to run when you turn your device upside down via tasker as well. Tasker is just THAT amazing!
trying it out know.will let u know how it turns out.

Should the 4 bottom lights turn off eventually? I just never really paid attention on my other phones but if they dont turn off eventually its really annoying like watching a movie they stay on its just bugging me. I love the phone and just wondering if they do shut off eventually or do they stay on all the time
They normally have to shut off im pretty sure correct me if im wrong and for the moment flip the phone lol

Download Screen Filter from the market. You can disable the button leds.
This was starting to get annoying. The thank you!

Oh my god. Thank you for this. It works great with tasker. I have it set so that when I plug my phone in, tasker gives me 3 options. One is night mode. When I select that all my volumes but alarm turn way down and it turns Tue brightness down, but with the 3D it didn't seem dim enough, especially with the capacitive buttons beaming like lasers. But now it also starts screen filter at 45 percent and turns the buttons off. Also made is so when I launch certain games and all movies it'll turn off the buttons automatically. So helpful!

is this possible? and if so, how? i've tried a few apps from the market, but they didn't seem to work
Why? Do you hate your phone so much, you need a quick way to burn in the screen?
Actually, while it's in my car dock and I'm using google maps, or any music, it's hard to see the screen after it dims, esp. when driving with my convertible top down in the daytime.

Have you tried STAYAWAKE? Keeps screen on while plugged in to any source that charges.
the screen stays on already... but it still dims until i touch the screen again.
Use Tasker - it's more complicated than most apps, but it gives you tons more control over your phone too.
Just remember to both turn off auto-dim as well as turn your brightness up for the "plugged in" event or it won't work properly if you use tasker!
I have a setting for plugged and unplugged, as well as at home (in range of my wireless SSID) and away. So my GPS turns on when plugged in and away, but not plugged in at home. But my display is set up the way you want as well - and mine increases the display timeout too.
