hi, I am running cm7 with stock kernel. Just recently my phone has been getting really hot. I checked the temp and its almost 110 degrees. I haven't installed anything recently either.
I can leave the phone sitting there not using it and it'll still be high. Should I install another kernel or do I need to change settings on my phone? I am using extended battery too.
Thanks.

Hmm any case on it? When its charging leave it face down too.
I have no case on it. Will searching for a signal cause the battery to get hot? My cell standby is at 54% and it says time without signal 67%

Mine got real hot after loading the latest CM7, while trying to sync all on 4G. It was smoking hot in my pocket, so I pulled it out, and took the Trident Aegis case off to help it cool down. I looked and noticed it was stuck at 3G but still trying to sync all.
I had to do the time consuming routine to get 4G every time I turn on the data, and my GPS was still not working, so the hot battery sealed the deal... back to BAMF 1.8 till the next CM7 release is ready to test.
I ran into this one time and found that turning off Wifi seemed to do the trick. It seemed as though constant searching for an available Wifi network caused my battery to get hot. This makes sense if you read how tethering causes some phones to get hot as well.
Thanks I guess the searching for a single is the culprit bc it doesn't get hot while charging.

I'm experiencing the same thing and the exact cause is a mystery to me. The battery definitely gets hotter than it did with BAMF stripped 2.1, yet I get much better battery life than I ever did with sense. This completely defies logic since the two things that will make a li-poly battery warm are a high C draw or charge, but a high C draw should correlate to poor battery life yet it doesn't. I'm starting to wonder if something other than the battery is causing the heat...

One other thing to add, my battery level went from full to low in less than 2.5 hours when this happened. While I believe it was the battery that got hot, in reality I am not 100% sure. I do know that after turning Wifi off and charging the battery, the problem did not return. I am now very careful to toggle Wifi Off/On as my needs dictate. I do this even though I have set Wifi to turn off after 15 minutes from the advanced Wifi menu option. The Wifi 15 minute timeout was in effect when my phone got hot, so I am fairly certain it did not work as it should have. Hope this helps...

Hi all,
As the topic states, my new 10a of 1 month is starting to screw up. I was sitting in the classroom learning away and felt a hot spot on my leg...hauled out my phone and it was pretty hot (could still hold it but was very warm.). It was then that I noticed that the battery was discharging VERY fast, it went from about a 70-75% charge to dead in about an hour or less (I'd say less).
Got it home, charged it and left it on the charger. Took it into work today and it started to get hot again so I reset it but it's draining very fast now
Does this happen to people? I uninstalled some programs that I had put on it prior to it getting hot so I'm going to see if that fixes it...has anyone else seen this?
Chances are high that its an app giving you problems. Maybe look in your settings under battery use and see if anything is showing large cpu use.

Already checked. I think it might be hte internet staying on, but it's not showing it in the screen...says standby is suckin the most juice
if you don't already have one, get an app manager and kill all the apps that are running in the background when you're not using the phone. that same thing used to happen to me...you have to make sure you kill the apps you're not using because they just stay there running in the background which uses up a lot of battery and in turn causes the phone ot heat up too
I have noticed my battery sucks lately. I know the battery isn't the greatest but I was able to get easily a day of use out if it. Now I can barely go a day. I purchased beautiful Widgets, battery indicator and xda app all last week And it seems after that is when my battery went to **** .I used launcher pro for a bit too but started having lag problems so I removed that. Today I uninstalled beautiful Widgets. I'm on wifi and in airplane mode. As I'm typing this I've lost %2 already. Wtf is going on? I have GPS Bluetooth and usually wifi off. I have use only 2G networks, sync only gmail and screen manually set and set to low 30sec TO.
Any suggestions?

Sounds like way more than that. I can certainly type a couple paragraphs before my % drops at all. You sure haven't installed something else? If not you could have a defect.? Possibly return it and get a new one?

Quick question, which ROM are you running? Ever since I switched over to leaked JI2, every couple days I notice that after running one of a few apps, the CPU just seems to go into overdrive. The phone gets really warm and the battery drains ridiculously fast. So fast that even plugging into my car charger won't charge the phone, even on idle. If I reboot, the phone cools down and the battery drain goes back to its normal, slow self.
I haven't narrowed it down to any specific app yet, but it seems to be either, Foursquare, Great Land Grab, or Bubble Blast.
Foursquare I have, I don't remember when I installed it. I am actually just running stock TW.

I get 15hrs... I am not ROOTED! I did the drain battery life process twice. This is with moderate usage. I am planning to do the drain battery process once a month cuz I hear it helps with battery life. Possible that u install something that's killing your battery.
Solution do the master reset if that doesn't help then it can be the battery is no good. I know that this is with the stock rom. If u are using another rom that's maybe the problem. U can try switchig roms to see if this is the problem. I hope this information has been helpful.
Does the master reset remove everything ? I have all my pics/videos on my phone meM. I have music and avatar on SD.

I have all of those apps except for battery indicator. I get about just over a full day. I would say turn off Wifi Sleep Policy and see if that helps.

hey presence ive been having the same troubles lately...and i also jst recently got on foursquare...so maybe thats what it is...ive been looking at all my latest inslaeed apps and nothing else seems like it would have a battery drain effect...idk lol
I've had it installed for a while But started using it as of late. GPS fails all the time now though for some reason. Idk. But its kind of frustrating

I have the same issue and i run system app n it doesn't show anything abnormal running. Its awfully frustrating i went from being good for 18hours to being in the red after 12 hours. I dropped 2% just writing this. I have only 84% left after 1.5hours this morning...and I have no service during my 1hour commute so I haven't used it. Standby is killing my battery.

It seems as though it drains faster in standby with nothing running. I removed FourSquare last night and have nothing running as far as widgets. I'm going to reboot and see. I've had it unplugged since 7am this morning, after a little over an hour I lost 2%.. not that bad I guess..

I guess we can safely say it is foursquare widget draining the battery then

I've had this happen a few times. For me, it's usually because my battery status gets thrown off somehow. The phone would read that I have 55% battery life left, but it really only is at 25 or 30% and it always feels like it's draining fast. I usually turn off the phone, pull the battery out for a few seconds and then put it back it. When I turn on the phone the battery percentage is corrected and the phones seems to be back to normal battery use. I don't know why this happens.

This was suddenly happening to me today -- my battery started draining very quickly, mostly on standby (I usually have quite good battery life). No new or unusual apps installed in the past week (I don't use Foursquare).
I gave it a power-down/battery pull; no adjustment in the % as described in the post above, but it seems to be draining more normally now. Weird....

Same thing happens to me every couple days. Rebooting the phone fixes it every single time though, so it's not a big deal if I catch it in time. If I didn't catch it, I'd estimate my phone would be drained (even in standby) within 4 hours or so.

Same here, I rebooted after removing FS and some other apps/touitur and got 1day 13hrs on the next charge with pretty moderate use. So whatever it was, it's gone now. If it was FS hopefully it's fixed soon.
Had a similar experience, with battery % entering freefall every time I turned the phone on. Two things helped:
1. I did the drain cycle. Drain the battery completely till it shuts off and charge it to full while off. This does not 'fromat/form' the battery in any way it just helps the phone to calibrate the meter.
2. I uninstalled few apps that I suspected were draining the battery.
I advise you install JuicePlotter and see the graph of battery drain. You'll be able to tell if the phone is entering standby or not. Thanks to some culprit apps (still figuring out what it was exactly) my phone was not entering standby at all hence the crap battery life.
My TB has seem to be running hot constantly all day even without heavy use. I just checked it after 15 mins of inactivity and it still feels hot to the touch and the battery is still reading 108F/42.7C. Anyone else having this problem?
After 45 min of inactivity I turned off the Wifi and now 10 mins later its cooled down to 38C.
Is it Charging? My phones get hot when they Charge
On the first charge my battery was hot 45c on the second full charge it holds at 32c. All temps are heavy use with and without wifi.
Usually this happens because Wifi, GPS or Bluetooth are on. Turning off can help.
Also one time I had a problem with my Incredible, it was so hot. I finally figured out it was the stock mail app, some reason it was having a problem, so it kept trying to get my mail, but couldn't. So it could be an app. Usually if my phone starts getting hot, I just reboot. I think the app craigsphone causes my phone to get hot sometimes. There is now way to exit the app unless you press HOME, the back key dont work.
What tools are you using to measure your temps?

I came from the DX and i never had it get hot unless i was using flash heavily
my DINC would get pretty hot in class when playnig some zynga poker lol
after breaking my battery in a little more the temps are going down
I've been very happy with my 3vo battery getting all day usage with no problems up to 15 hours.
Then yesterday left the house with a full charge and a couple of hours later noticed my phone was warm but I was in and out of a friends house, very hot outside so didn't think anything about it. 5 hours later noticed my battery was very low and got the low battery warning at 6 hours.
I'm thinking something got stuck running, guess I'll find out today

There have been numerous reports of this. I did not take the OTA, for the record. What resolved this was a reboot but I can confirm that my phone wasn't sleeping yesterday until I rebooted it.
I had the same problem (i.e. it getting warmer than usual and then crappy battery life) I also noticed it dropped from full signal at my house to half. One hard reset later and it seems to be working like the awesome candy bar sized technical technical soul bot that it is (translation its great).
This could all be due to having a bad signal in the location you were. My battery life is great at home where I have 3-4 bars of service. When I go to work where Im lucky if I have 1 bar, my battery drains much quicker.

That would cause battery drain, but wouldn't explain the phone staying awake. The sleeping issue happened to me in the exact same location.
Take the OTA, it completely fixes the awake issue.
HTC sync gets "stuck" on and kills yoUr battery.

Yeah this has happened to me twice so far. I don't think its low signal as much as a app doing it. I basically work faraday cage and it never gets hot.
I've been noticing a good amount of heat up by the camera during moderate use. I thought this was a CM7 problem since I had been on it since day 1, but I am now on UnNamed and the problem persists. After some googling it does seem that many other people are having this problem. Not on WIFI, and not in a poor signal area either. Just wanted to see if anyone had any leads as to the cause. What is a good app for monitoring CPU usage by app?
Yes, it may get a little hot but it isn't something to worry about as far as I know. I've gamed for three hours straight and not had any problems except for a low battery life!
yeah mine gets hot near the camera during use but i dont think its a problem
I use a battery monitor.
From what I've read, it will shut off for protection. I've heard that as long as it doesn't ever get too much above 130 F, you should be OK.
Now if it constantly stays high, there may be a problem. Mine stays around 80 F most of the time and the highest I've ever seen is 99 F but i don't game much or use my camera. One thing you don't wanna do is charge it while hd gaming or charge it in a hot car. My infuse reached 146 F one time doing that.

When I first got CM7 running on this thing, I tore through the market installing the apps I'm used to. When I was finished, I noticed that it was indeed a bit warm in the area you described. It wasn't hot enough to cause discomfort, just warm enough to note.
I notice when my phone gets hot in that area when it is around 30% remaining and I charge it. I also notice that when it is charging, it really isn't charging but battery is draining. When I got home and charged it at 30%, I left it sitting there for about 30 minutes and when I checked the phone again, it was at 25%. GPS and wifi was turned off. I decided to power down the phone and remove the battery for 5 minutes. I started working fine after that. I noticed it getting hot again today when I plugged it in to charge at 40% but this time it actually was charging. I am running stock rom but rooted. Should this be a concern?
Seems as though a lot of people are having a variation of this problem. Hopefully it is addressed soon.
The CPU will always get a bit warm if it's running.
If it's getting very hot when the screen is off, you've probably got some background task wakelocking the phone.
My phone's screen gets pretty hot when I run web videos/flash videos on HSPA.
Runs a tiny bit warm when i'm running pristine 3D Tegra games on it...otherwise no.
