I've been holding off updating. I'm a little confused, I've seen some posts saying its better to do the ota. Does it really matter which way you you update?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Well, I OTAd the update on a rooted 1.57 and had no problems. Just had to run afterupdate.bat again from gladroot after the update to retain root. I think the better question is do you want to be odexed or deodexed. Odexed is good if you want to keep your phone as close to stock as possible and you will get these files from the OTA update. Deodexed is better is you want to do editing, install more themes, etc.
The 1.83 sbf with deodexed files is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1055851
and I don't need to tell you where the OTA update for odexed files is.
I have the 1.83 sbf already thanks though. I'm rooted and on grey blur with webtop mod, so I haven't gotten the ota notice.
I thought retain root doesn't work, so we have to use ginger break instead.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Last night I soft bricked my phone, flashed to 1.26, used gladroot to root, updated to 1.57, ran afterupdate to get root back, OTAd to 1.83, ran afterupdate again and am not running on 1.83 rooted. Gingerbreak scares me with the talk of it possibly formatting your internal sd.
Your not on 1.83? Or is that a typo?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I'm running Gingerblur version 3.0. I just got the update message for 1.8.3. It will download but not install. I had this issue upgrading to the one before this. Last time I restored my phone back to stock to get it to install. Don't want to do that again. Is it something I'm overlooking?

Yep, I lose the contents of internal SD every time - but with backup, it's much quicker and easier than flashing back to 1.26 and working your way up again. Appears to have no adverse effects - worked fine to restore root after 1.5.7 and again after 1.8.3.
Of course YMMV.

I'm on 1.83 now, I was saying that I had a rooted 1.57 and was able to OTA update to 1.83 with no problems.
And I may end up trying gingerbreak in the future, but I was bricked anyway so I just rebuilt.
I was in the exact same situation. Had to install SBF 1.26 and repeated the hole process. I don't think there's other way to update

Need help! I tried running through the steps to install pre-rooted gingerbread on my dx2 and everything was going well till the reboot, now the phone won't get past the motorola M "dual core" screen. I can get back to stock recovery, I've tried wiping the phone but no dice, so I've sbf-ed back to froyo through RSD lite and then the phone starts up fine. Tried installing pre-rooted GB three times and it always ends the same :-( Probably just being a moe.ron but I have no idea what else to try. Thanks in advance for anyone taking the time to try and help!
-desperately wanting rooted gingerbread
Sbf to gingerbread and find the thread on one click gingerbread root method.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
Gotta root froyo, then use the bootstrap to install that file. Now that we have the sbf for gingerbread and the one click root...you don't have to go to froyo and take all those unnecessary steps, just flash the gingerbread sbf. Just make sure you wipe data before the sbf...it usually eliminates a bootloop.

This is not for the OTA, this is for the prior cheesecaked build
####BACKUP your current system with BSR before doing anything!####
1. SBF or nand restore to stock 2.3.4 (if on completely unmodified and fully bloated stock 2.3.4 skip to step 2)
2. Apply 2.3.5 (412 build) in stock recovery after placing on external sd card root and renaming update.zip (reboot phone and hold down volume, press down arrow until you see android recovery, press up volume button, when on next screen press both volume buttons at same time. Wipe cache and flash update.zip)
3. Root using zergrush (with phone unpluged unzip and open zergrush program....make sure unknown sources in applications is checked and that debuggung is checkmarked. I also checkmark stay awake as zergrush recommends setting screen timeout for ten minutes. Connect your phone and then check it is connected as charge only. Hit spacebar and then the phone will reboot after the zerglings lol find a way in and your rooted)
***Rootkeeper has caused issues with some roms aborting install.***
4. Install & then boot into bootstrap
5. Wipe data, cache and dalvik
6. Flash 2.3.5 based custom rom from removable sd card & reboot when done.

Thanks this will help many including myself. Had to sbf 2 times last night and no luck. However I was using rootkeeper. I will try again tonight with zergrush.
There are now a newer set of updates to 2.3.5 to be applied over... if your gonna do it might as well do a full set..
I would put at the very beginning of the post to do a backup. People should know, but you know how that goes. lol

I know you can update via cheese cake to newer versions. I know Eclipse is off of the linked 2.3.5 which is 412 and I believe pepper's is the same. Please correct me if I am wrong.
There might be unknown issues if everyone starts flashing roms desinged for one build over other updates....is that what your refering to? Am I wrong about this?

Im trying to help a friend with his droid x2. We rooted it with dooms v4 zergrush before doing anything else, hadnt seen this tutorial yet. When trying to update to 2.3.5 it aborts, last line said E:Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip. Do we need to unroot to do this then root again? I did this because for eclipse rom it sais it needs rooted gingerbread, but step 3 of install is to root, so it confused me, I chose to root it first.
I tried unrooting and starting over, still wont work. Its wierd that it the OP it sais to do a BSR backup before starting but then step 4 sais to install bootstrap, Ill assume BSR is BootStrapRecovery, so if you need to have it to backup before starting why would you need to install it? Im a bit confused here. I have 2 rooted, unlocked bootloader x10s with MIUI so Im not a newbie but this is frustrating.

I have never used V4 zerg...use v3 as in instructions. You dont need to unroot. Are you flashing the 412 buil update in android stock recovery? After you install the 412 update you will need to reroot....DONT USE ROOTKEEPER...If you fallow the instructionas as wrote you will have no issues that also includes using the mentioned rooting program as well.
I would suggest at this point SBF and start from step one and/or unroot 2.3.4 and start from step one using everything in the OP as instructed to the T.
If you cant get it your not following the instructions.

Hey guys.
I went from 2.3.4 to 2.3.5 a little while go to upgrade to the new eclipse, but zergRush won't root for me. So, I was told to downgrade to 2.3.4 and install the voodoo root keeper app. My question: in downgrading, I just sbf to 2.3.4 on my computer right? Or is there something else I should do?
or root from linux
i use D2X ezSBF with zergrush
worked great after zerg failed in win 7

you have system version 1.3.412?
thought I read that 1.3.413 can't go back,
but 1.3.412 I know that's fine, I've done it.
ezSBF is burned on cd, and you boot from cd

Yea I have 1.3.412

Sbf on ur PC will be fine. I've done it many times.
I am taskforceZ
I flashed eclipse on 2.3.5 and didnt like the battery drain...cleared data/cache then restored my 2.3.4 backup and had 0 problems. So if you want to save some time and you have a backup use it. If it fails for you then you can sbf but I'm positive it works as I done it a few days ago.

Even tho u restored a backup made on 2.3.4 u are still on the kernel that was installed with the 2.3.5 update.zip if u didn't do a sbf flash
Sbf flashes and OTA(signed update.zip) is the only way we can change our kernel

Zergrush is most likely not working for you because you didn't "extract all" on the zip zergrush comes in
Right click on the zip file for zergrush
Extract all
Then run it and enjoy being rooted
Zergrush will work on 2.3.4&2.3.5(build412)

Rootkeeper works just fine. Only thing to watch out for is you can not install eclipse 2.+ with rootkeeper installed. You have to erase your back up. But it will get you to 2.3.4 no problem
Just from what I read in these forums, root keeper works, but people do have problems with it in some circumstances. I dont read about people having problems with the other two one click root methods. I've always used the one click methods and never used root keeper so Im just basing it off of what I read. But in your circumstance, either way will probably be fine. But like what was already said, you might have to use the one click methods if you are updating to certain things.

I would recommend following my SBF tutorial and SBF to 2.3.4 (Gingerbread), then follow my rooting tutorial for the DX2, then follow my nandroid backup tutorial. Once you have those, take a look at CM7DX2 for a nice ROM for the DX2 (the original post (OP) has detailed installation instructions that I wrote), or Nitro's Eclipse ROM.
All links to my tutorials are in my signatue. Look up the CM7DX2 and Eclipse ROMs in the development section for the Droid X2.

Thanks moon shadow what your saying makes sense. I am just leary about the whole flash, sbf method. i have had bad luck with rsd in the past. I am really not a big rommer i tried liberty before and it repeatedly soft bricked my phone. I used rsd to run the gb leak for my original dx and found it very unstable. I just really wanted the update but also keep my root goodies.

Backup ur app with rom tool box pro, or titanium backup. Accept the ota and use zergrush to root all u do is plug it into ur comp press enter and boom rooted. I recommend gb2.3.3 stock. So far it has been the best stock rom. Way better than 2.3.4. But that is my opinion. Remember anything u do is at ur own risk. Enjoy

I just wanted to say thanks again shadow your a huge help for a noob
if drivers are in zip, unzip anywhere
then run them, by double clicking
Shadow im having an issue flashing it wont pull the right information for my phone it just says s flash and n/a for everything else shoud i be in mass storage or charge only?
to flash SBF, you need to be in bootloader mode
RSD Flash Support
turn off, hold volume up, reboot
all it will say is "starting RSD support"
then your ready
yea i got that far but in your tutorial it says that i should see the infor on my phone in slot 1 but all it says is s flash, and all the info on the phone is N/A? is this alright?
edit: sorry it was the link that you sent me it said i should see my phone info
