[Q] Readers hub, PDF magazines? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Themes and Apps

Hi all
Can anybody with a GT 10.1 (p7510) tell me if I can read PDF magazines via Readers Hub?
I'm going to New York to buy one next week and returning to Denmark I would like to read some pdf magazines that I have downloaded. Is that possible with the preinstalled apps?

I dont think there is a Readers Hub yet...
but you can read PDF with Adobe Reader on the market

Don't you? I thought that GT came with Touchwiz and all Samsung apps including the Readers Hub?
Okay I'll try that... If anybody know about Readers Hub is preinstalled and if I can read my magazines in that app that would be great...

The upgrade to TW should happen "soon"

Okay, thanks...
Then what about the google book app? Does that support imported PDF's?

No. You can't import anything into Google Books, See http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/books/thread?hl=en&tid=71705bdedebe9722 for details.

I have installed the inofficial 10.1 WIFI TW Rom (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1167250) and the included book reader is able to import books and PDFs.
J.

I upgraded to TW but no Reader's Hub yet.. too bad.
Besides that, TW way better than Vanilla Honeycomb.
For Magazines, try to use ZINIO - excellent app.

can you import magazines into ZINIO?

Don't think you can you have to subscribe to the, or download individual issues. BTW I think Samsung have integrated Zinio with touchwiz, looking at their latest ads.

I don't think the tablets will get a Readers Hub. If you look here, you can see that the only hubs Samsung mentions is a Media Hub and Social Hub. Under books/eReading all it mentions are the Kindle and Google books apps. I also don't see any mention of the Games Hub either. If this is true, that kind of sucks.

guys
The readers hub is made of:
press display (newspapers) zinio (magazines) ebook (books).
The first 2 are in the market, for the third one download google books from the market.
So everyone already has readers hub.

I have no problem at all reading magazines that I download elsewhere within Zinio. They are in PDF format.

Do you import them in? I tried that with Zinio and they didn't show.
Edit: Oh, nevermind. I assume you are typing of the special version of Zinio on the Readers Hub.

HD Book reader supporting fb2/epub, which one?

Hi.
I would like to have a book reader app, supporting epub or fb2 format. The google books does not support this sadly. I like iBooks for iPad, want something similar.
What I did try:
Google Books - doesn't support local files at all
Kindle - need to create account and doesn't support fb2/epub
FBReader - best for phones, but does not support splitting text into two columns, so you can hardly read in landscape mode.
Kobo - same as Kindle
My favorite one to use is the Nook app. It supports epub files, but I'm not sure about the fb2. You do have to create an account for it but I think it is worth it. My favorite thing about it is that it has the turn page animations and you can change the color of the font and the color of the pages to make it look more like a real book. It also is quite smooth and doesn't lag that much. Hope this helps!

Nook here for epub, very good
Yup. I also use Nook and sideload epubs. It's very snappy.
I use moonreader+

Aldiko looks amazing on the Tab. There were some crash issues, but they came out with an updated version that supposedly addressed this. I haven't tested extensively enough to verify, so YMMV.
nook app. Its honeycomb optimized and looks great
Anyone know how to get the book covers to show if you import your own epub files on the Nook app? Its not that big of a deal, but it would look much nicer than the grey "n" that shows up. Any help would be appreciated.

I believe BN has that ability stripped on the Market version of the nook app. If you own a nook color, the stock book reader will display covers, but the market app will not. It is one of the reasons I will revert to stock on my NC (and the fact that I got the tab for other tablet uses).
An alternative is the Aldiko reader - it handles epub and shows cover thumbnails.

Yeah, but I really like the page turn animation that the nook app offers. Aldiko isn't bad, but it doesn't have the feel of a real book like Nook does. Thanks for your feedback man.
yup, sadly there is no perfect app... yet. Nook has sufficient functionality, and reasonable polish, aldiko the most functionality but lacks polish, google books is all polish and no functionality.
Try CoolReader, it supports 2 columns in landscape mode.
It's also open source, used in many e-ink readers and is highly customizable via CSS.
The only missing feature is the lights out mode for Honeycomb, but it will probably appear soon or you can always contribute a patch.

I have been trying different readers and found using Nook for my epub books works great with Calibre. I've had it installed on my pc for easy conversion and recently found there is an android app for it as well. The android app allows you to download your epub books from your pc to your device via wifi. Using the Nook app, I can download directly to My Document directory.
Aldiko on the Tab 10.1?
How does Aldiko behave under Honeycomb on the 10.1? I love Aldiko for all its features, but on my HTC Hero and Desire HD it has ridiculous amounts of lag when updating the book cover thumbnails when you are in any of the views.
On those devices, you scroll down just a few books and you see a default Aldiko cover which after a second or so updates to show the actual cover. If you scroll down more, again the same lag. But what is really annoying is that if you scroll up again to the books you just viewed, which had already shown the cover, they have reset to show the default Aldiko, so you have to wait again for it to update. Just looks so tacky, when the rest of the software is so polished.
I really don't understand why they can't update the thumbnails more smoothly, or just update them once.
Is it the same behaviour on the 10.1 or other Honeycomb devices?
That is the only thing really stopping me from getting Honeycomb over the HTC Flyer, because the Flyer's Reader UI like on all their latest phones is simply beautiful, I think it uses OpenGL so it so fluid. I do want to get the latest Android version, but I am such an avid reader I want the best possible experience...
Thanks for any advice!

[Q] TouchWhiz Ebook app

I wanted to say that I really like the new EBook reader that was released with the TouchWhiz update. I bought my tablet so I could read comics and books on it. I am so in love with this device for these purposes. Before I was using Aldiko and the Kindle app. I really like the way the page turns in EBook, you can grab a corner or turn it from the middle of the page. I realize this is so dorky but I don't care. Its the little things.
Is anyone reading comics on their Galaxy tab? I use XComics and the DC comic app, but also ACV (Android Comic Viewer) for older scans. It does crash from time to time. Can anyone recommend something else?
I love this app too, but how did you get your kindle books to transfer to it? Or google books?
I actually haven't transferred any. I got a new book, Clash of Kings, from a friend in epub format.

I have the Kindle and the 10.1 with the Kindle app. Signed in to same account on both devices. I also enabled the Kindle Cloud by going to;

The same books I have on my Kindle are on the tab.

[Q] Adobe Acrobat reader for WebOS - bookmarks?

I bought the Touchpad to be a sheet music display, and I've made a nice PDF file of all the arrangements I play with my band, only to discover that the Adobe Reader on the touchpad apparently will display thumbnails but not bookmarks in my PDF file. I tried to work around it by creating a table of contents with hotlinks to each song, but apparently, hotlinks aren't working in the WebOS version of Acrobat reader, either.
Am I missing something or am I truly screwed here?
Is there a third party PDF reader that I should be using?
Anyone got any better ideas for a workaround?
If you're not opposed to it...here is a workaround. (You're not screwed)
Install Cyanogenmod alpha 2 to your Touchpad and use the android version of adobe reader. It works fine.
Thanks, but no thanks. I have CM7 on my Nook Color and I'll wait until they have something stable for the Touchpad.
Believe it or not, cm7 is really stable now, just give it a try, besides, you don't lose webos, it is dual boot (and you share the storage between both os)

no bookmarks on webOS adobe reader was a really big gripe of mine, i LOVE reading books on the touchpad, but remembering the page # every time got really annoying >:/ (ended up have to make a note in the note app with the book/page#)
im not sure theyre gonna even update adobe for webOS anymore either, but it DOES work perfectly on CM7 alpha
I believe this is what you are looking for. Someone hacked the adobe reader and it appears to have bookmarks now

great post for those who still use webOS
Dang, I thought that was just what the Dr. ordered, but the bookmarks implementation is the exact same thing as the thumbnails. I need the title of the page to display as a bookmark, not a thumbnail of the page. Darn it, so close.
blerg that sucks, perhaps you can peruse the app store and preware for a more suitable "ebook" reader that also supports PDF's
While Picsel smart office doesn't support bookmarks like you described, it can handle hyperlinks, so your revised PDFs may work. Note though, I only tested this on a single PDF file, so YMMV.

E-book providers

Want sure if this is the right forum for posting this, but I wanted to get you guys' insight into this.
I'm a big fan of HTC's reader app, but unless you have a Kobo account you're left to converting epub and mobi files in Calibre. This is typically the case for me as most of my books have come from either Amazon or Barnes & Noble.
Could you guys that have Kobo give some insight into the service? How dies it compare to Amazon and B&N? What about selection size?
Sent from GrandAdmiral's phone using Tapatalk.
You don't have to use calibre to convert epubs. They are natively supported. Just restart your flyer and they import. If you get a request for your username and password, contact Barnes and noble. It's something like your B&N username and last 4 of card used to purchase. All of my books auto import now. I have not purchased from kobo yet, and don't use calibre.

Kobo User
I have been using Kobo since picking up the Flyer. I believe you will find it an excellent service once you have your account set up on the tablet. When I buy a book using the Kobo reader app I just enter in my password for a purchase and it begins a down load right to the Flyer. I have used Mobi pocket and have downloaded from project gutenberg also.
Kobo was Indigo/Chapters, the Barnes & Noble of Canada. (It was recently sold to Rakuten (of Japan).)
Books show up on it a few weeks after release on Amazon and B&N. Selection, otherwise, seems about the same. Prices equivalent to B&N on my comparison shopping on a few items, and both about $1/item over Amazon.
However, so far, only Amazon carries the book that my son was a co-authored, called Reinventing Fire.
OTOH stay away from the Kobo Vox, their Kindle Fire competitor.
You know, I really like the Reader app. The aesthetics of it are nice, the animations are slick, the pinch to zoom, non-square-and-plain highlighting--like it all. I've purchased a few books through Kobo, and had no problems what-so-ever, and their prices were good.
However...
I do a lot of highlighting and note-taking, and want a backup of those. I found no indication that the Reader backs-up or syncs to the cloud (and when I asked HTC on Facebook, they agreed that it does not.) So, I switched to Kindle. I tried both Nook and Kindle apps, and like the Kindle functionality the best. I'm wrapping up a few books in Reader, but then will be all Kindle (again, just 'cause of the cloud-sync business.)

There are plugins which you can use. Search for "apprentice alf". That should point you in the right direction.
About the native reader app, I never use it. Not enough settings. The margin is way too wide (top and bottom). This makes it unusable to me.

you can customise everything...fonts and colours and how to turn the pages and sort by tags and collections...but most importantly, the non-proprietary reader software don't own and take over your books
i recommend sticking to epub format because they are the only true open formats...having all your books in a proprietary format leaves you stuck with that provider, and if you are already on xda i assume you don't get a kick of being told how you have to use something
go with Mantano Reader...in my tests it was the most comprehensive (this from a chick with over 780 books in her collection, so this was a bit of an important subject for me...i sold my Asus Transformer because it wasn't comfortable as an ereader)
also, learn how to use Calibre to manage your collections...i have my library on a server as an opds catalog, which Mantano can access, and i also have it hosted on a no-ip domain
http://calibre-ebook.com/
I use Moon Reader Pro. I have customized a lot of the viewing options and love it. If you use Ivona, you can use TTS to have the book read out loud.
I used Calibre to convert my 300 books from www.ereader.com because I am afraid it is going to go under. I had been using that site for over a decade for my ebooks. The website has really gone down since BN bought it out about 3 years ago and they have not updated their Android app since the beta release.

it all depends on your needs/preferences, there's a lot nice RSS-readers (and quasi RSS, like BBC app, Zite or World Newspapers) on the market, see for yourself you''l find sth you'll like and keep
myself, after testing about 20 different apps, I've settled with FeedR, it is old, it is not flashy, but it has clean, concise and cofigurable interface, no unnecessary pics, and the news articles open/expand on the same feed page, so there's no need for extra navigation - more than enough for a serial reader

Advice to choose by yourself via Google Play, coz everyone has their own preferences
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
After trying a handful of RSS readers, I sticked with google reader which I access via browser (Dolphin HD).
The features I was looking for:
Cloud reader (so that I can read my feeds on phone, then come home, open a tablet and resume where I ended)
Seamless follow-up when reading "the rest of the article". Here the Google Reader in the browser really scored because many of the RSS apps provide very nice user experience, however ultimately I end firing up the browser anyway. With G Reader in Dolphin, I can just open the article in a background tab and move on
Of course, YMMV
