[Q] Scratched Screen - HTC EVO 3D

My Evo 3D has a scratch and I'm pretty upset about it. I bought the screen protectors from Sprint & didn't like them so I ordered Optishieldz off of someone's recommendation. This was Friday morning & I took the Sprint one off and luck shone down on me and scratched my phone later that night. It's a tiny scratch but it's right in the middle of the screen and my PHONE IS BRAND NEW DAMMIT!
So I'm wondering if anyone has experience with 1. I saw that you can buy a replacement screen online or 2. some sort of scratch repair. I'd rather have a new screen and I'm actually considering even purchasing a new phone and selling this one and taking the hit just to have the piece of mind of a pristine phone.
I've read here and in other forums that the protector might make it less noticable but I'm not sure if that will make me happy. I'll have to try it and see I guess. Right now it's big enough that if I slide my fingernail down the screen right over top of it, the scratch will stop it.

I've heard other stories of the E3D having an easy to scratch screen. Try the screen protector, and see if it makes it less noticeable, and let us know how it went.

i've heard that some car waxes can get rid o the scratches. dunno which brand is recommended though.

i've always used carnuba on my screens. makes them easy to clean and fingers slide oh so smooth. First time I apply, dry, wipe, repeat 4 or 5 times. Then I just reapply monthly or so or whenever i polish guitars

yeah it depends on how deep it is, if you can feel it with your fingernail you may be out of luck, but if you can't feel it or just barely feel it you can use a nice hard car wax with carnuba or just buy a clay bar, these are made to remove imperfections.
I would put masking tape around the screen edges so you don't get wax in the seam where the glass meets plastic, or the speaker grille.
I have also used the automotive glass polish with good results, its arosol and you spray it let it dry then polish it off. I had good luck with rainEX anti fog wipes for finger print resistance. I put in on after the screen protector. you can buy it in nice little towelettes. lasted a good 3 months before I had to re-apply.

Hello,
The 3D is made from Gorilla Glass which is relatively Scratch Resistant. It is the same Material the EVO 4G is made of. It is also used on upper tier LED-LCD HDTV's as well.
If you have Insurance, the Sprint Store might be able to replace the Screen for free. All I know is when the one day I did not have my EVO 4G in an Otterbox Defender, my Sister in Law dropped it on Concrete and the left Corner was cracked.
Sprint replaced the Screen free of charge which was a pleasant surprise. Especially as it was Rooted and running Ultra Blakk 2 ROM on it. I was expecting to pay 100 Dollars. I am not sure if they even have 3D Replacement Screens yet, but they might.
Cheers,
JJ

I appreciate that! Here's my Sprint story. My sales rep said they couldn't do it in his store but if I went to another store (gave me 3 to choose from) they would do it for me. So I got in my car & drove 30 minutes to one of those stores where they promptly told me he was wrong and there's nothing they could do. They said they don't have any 3D parts yet but even if they did, it's a cosmetic thing so it's not covered.
I just switched to Sprint. I feel like returning the phone & cancelling my service, then ordering one off Amazon ($50 cheaper) and just going without service until then. But then I feel like I'd be a douche to do that because I'm the one who scratched it.
It's just frustrating because I would pay for a new screen, but they tell me that's just not an option.

Gorilla glass my ass. My 4G has scayches and I keep it in my pocket with nothing else in it. They must use a coating instead of actual glass.

Gorilla glass is a gimick if there ever was one..
It still gets scratched
It still breaks
Is it any better than tempered glass? No its glass.. glass in any form has some sort of breaking point and compaired to any thing else is relatively easy to break whatever the manufacturer claims

EVO 4G was not on this list up until not to long ago. The list might not be up to date or they might not want to mention it, but the glass looks and feels the same. I had evo 4g for a year till I sold it, no screen protector and not a single scratch.

Obviously not made with gorrila glass !

My dog just knocked my brand new photon out of my hand and the screen shattered !
I feel your pain my 220 dog stepped on my dell streak 5 screen and broke it and o just bought a photon 3 days ago sweet phone but after hearing this im getting an otterbox! How far of a fall was it?

Suck dude, that just HURTS to see!
Dude, that totally sucks. I'm sorry to hear about this but it is indeed made with gorilla glass. GG is not shatter proof it merely is tougher to resist scratches minor impacts. Hope you at lease have TEP on it. Then again anyone with a glass faces smartphone should have TEP. Good luck with a replacement!
Ya, my evo had gorilla glass and did the same thing.
Loving this Mopho!
I agree, that just hurts seeing that.
Hope you get a replacement soon.
TS
Sorry man! It happens when we least expect it. That's what TEP is for. Hopefully you have it, if not you better hurry up and sign up for it at your local corporate Sprint store or you can call Sprint. Otherwise get your checkbook out and get ready to pay full retail or get the screen replaced if the phone still works.
Yeah its funny when I see ppl say "OMG its not gorilla glass because I dropped it and it shattered". Gorilla glass means that it resists scratches and able to protect it against some minor impacts.
There isn't a phone or tablet out there that can survive a fall from like an apt building. Word of advice, get a case next time on your phone and a screen protector.
yeah i have the tep but i was thinking maybe warranty it since it's less than a week. The fall was less than a foot. oh well we will see what they say and i will let you guys know what happens. What pisses me off is it is going to take forever to get my apps back on it. Just the outter glass shattered I wish they could just replace the glass.
GG isn't about avoiding impacts/shattering. It's about avoiding scuffs and scratches to the screen's surface. We need Corning or 3M or somebody to come up with "FUBAR-resistant" screen protection. That would super-groovy!
EDIT -- Hopefully the good folks over at cnn.cn will provide us Photon nerds with some replacements components soon.
Less than a foot? Did it land on a diamond spike?

No but it was concrete and what's better it didn't land on the screen it was face up.

So I think A: You should be able to still enroll for TEP insurance if its within the 30 days, B: I also think it's open enrollment so if you dont have it, call in and have them add it don't mention the screen, then call back in a couple days and file a claim. Keep in mind i think it's insurance fraud but more power to ya!

All variants of the Evo have had Gorilla Glass..
http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/products-with-gorilla/htc
lol, not to be rude, but why does everyone think that just because it's "unbreakable" means it won't break, everything breaks no matter what you try to do it.....except a cockroach....now if only we could make so type of material....*back to the lab*
^ this is true. I knew that the EVO had Gorilla glass because I saw one or two videos with some guy attempting to scratch it with his keys and there was no damage, but I also heard that its not like other Gorilla glass devices and proof of that is that when my EVO fell to the ground and got destroyed in a million pieces, the replacement phone no less than a few days of getting it got a nice 1 inch curved scratch on the glass when I forgot to take my keys out of my pocket and placed the phone in there.
Hopefully the Gorilla Glass on the Photon is of better quality. Regardless, don't let it fall to the ground.
TS
I've only had the Photon for 24 hours but I'm loving it. I'm pretty sure if you drop this phone it's going to shatter your screen. So hold in tight guys. Is there some sort of option for auto correct on the Photon keyboard?

Bent my LTEVO today... Can the issue be fixed permanently?

As the title says, I somehow managed to bend my phone today... Sitting in my shirt pocket without moving, pulled it out and it was bent.
Bent it back without issue but it has me wondering... Is there anything we can add to the phone itself to make it more rigid? Maybe do a One X back swap with a cutout for the kickstand (pipe dream probably)? I may even give up the kickstand for a properly supported backplate.
I'm currently using a Cruzerlite TPU case, which I love, and I don't want to get rid of it for something more rigid (and thicker), so I'm curious what other options there are? I'm not opposed to taking the phone apart and looking into some options... Maybe even something like thin metal rods that can be fed through the kickstand with a couple of small holes?
If there's no way to fix the issue permanently, I'm honestly very tempted to look into some other phone choices... I'm cautious with my phone (which is why I put the phone in my shirt pocket instead of my pants pocket in the first place) and it still happened. Next time I might not be so lucky on bending it back, and I'm not ready to fork out the $100 for insurance to replace a phone with (what I consider to be) a defect.
Am I crazy for expecting my phone to stay in one piece like every other phone I've owned, or is this the way phones are moving towards (giving up build quality for thinness sake)?

Weld a support beam along the sides?
Really would need to be something along the back, and as wide as possible. Might take the phone apart to the bare pieces to see what we're working with.

then dont treat this thing like its "tough" because it obliviously is not. Hell, just look at this thing. This is a prime example on why devices like this should not be made this thin. And people wonder why their phone bends when they put it in a back pocket of a tight pair of jeans *rolls eyes*

i keep mine in my pocket too but this often happens because people are wearing pants and what not that are too tight thus, causing their phone to bend when the pants are constricted during movement.
Ex: putting phone in back pocket of jeans and bending over/sitting on it.
I have no sympathy for people who bend their phone doing these things. If people cant realize that aluminum wont bend on such a thin phone then its their own damn fault.

There is a long thread on this problem and it is bending in front pockets also. I really think the only thing to do is put a sturdy case over it.

As a former repair tech for Sprint, MOST stores will consider that physical damage. There are some, I was one of them, that would exchange it, under the right circumstances, but most will not. It will depend on the level of damage and with Assurion cracking down on Sprints exchange policy (Assurion doesn't just do replacements for damaged beyond repair, lost, or stolen... They do all refurbs as well) Sprint tech are being more selective about the phones for advance exchanges. Your absolute best bet, is a repair center at a Preferred Retailer. They have slightly looser rules and quotas to follow. Good luck guys!! Hope this helps.

For all you people talking about skinny jeans and what not, my phone is bent as well and I've put it in the leg pocket of my cargo shorts since the day I got it. As someone else said, there is another thread about this, it's a known issue. The phone tends to bend just above the kickstand. I bought an Otterbox Commuter in the hope that it will prevent my phone from getting worse. I've had a TPU case on it from the start but everyone has said really good things about the Otterbox so I figured I'd give it a try.

I'm kinda with this quote. I was being polite when I posted the link to the other thread on this very same issue.
The phone is solid guys. As a former repair tech for Sprint who has taken every single phone they sell apart, I can say this phone is sturdy. I have also taken this phone apart and beat on it pretty hard with power tools and an assortment of sand paper to polish the rear aluminum housing. I simply held it in my hand and sanded on it for hours, puttind a lot of stress on the part you guys are all calling weak, with out the screen or anything else the adding structural support.
I have had no issues what so ever and I only use a tpu case, if that.
If your phone is damaged, its not fair to place blame on anyone but yourselves, or possibly someone else if they were responsible.

The proximity sensor stopped working while in the case but worked once taken out, there were tiny scratches and residue of some kind on the screen protector. I've spent a lot of money on a lot of cases over the years and I think this is the most disappointed I've been. For the price I was expecting more, I feel it's definitely over-priced. I don't need a waterproof case all the time, just for certain occasions. I ended up getting one of the RedPepper waterproof cases for less than 1/2 the price and I'm happy with it. The only draw back is you can't access the s-pen. I stuffed it with paper towels and left it under water for 10 minutes and they were still dry.

I got my case yesterday after waiting almost 4 weeks. I use the proximity sensor to wake up my screen and I've noticed that with most apps that the proximity sensor fails, but there are couple apps that works with the proximity sensor even with the obex case on. Right now, I'm using the obex case with no problems at all including the proximity sensor working just fine.
Touch sensitivity is also very good. This is with using a glass screen protector (feather) along with the built in screen protector. If fits perfectly and doesn't interfere at all with the sensitivity. I was going to take off the screen protector because I've heard that it will interfere with the sensitivity, but I have a thin glass one and it's working the same as before the case was on. I think it can work with thick glass (over .4mm) screen protector as well, but problem is I don't think it will fit within the case since it's already a tight fit with even with a thin one.
Anyway, a very good case IMHO. Only con is the horrible backorder status (you'll probably have to wait a while for Seidio to ship it) and the price is still overpriced no matter how good it is.

Thanks for the review. I am still in the air on water proof case.... I just need something water resistant for swim and fishing season. I dont plan on taking it in the water... but be close to it with a phone is always bad.
I did find this in my search.... makes me wonder.

If waterproof is a necessity, I would plunge for the obex. I did the water test before I put my phone in the case and it's pretty flawless. Some water will seep in through the port area, but the actual inside is very dry.
I can't really say for sure for other brands as this is my first waterproof case, but I would be cautious of other brands especially nameless ones. But like you said, if it's just to cover from light water or splashes, I would say go for a case that just covers the whole phone (including ports). Just make sure not to drop it in water. ]
Also, I know that I said the price is a con, but in the end, that's just subjective so take that with a grain of salt lol.
As requested by the OP, here are some pictures. Please forgive me for the incredibly crappy quality as I took these pictures with a 4 year old Xperia device. The camera is not too great on it unfortunately.
Hopefully someone does it a proper review and provides better pictures than I do. These pictures really don't give justice to how sleek the actual case is.
I'm glad someone is having better luck than I did with the Obex case. For $30 I'm completely happy with the RedPepper case, I've tested it again for 20 minutes (instead of 10) underwater and it's still dry inside.
How deep in the water did you go? Will it just float? What about a toilet fall?
Any practical test? Not just a glass of water or bowl.

The last time I tested it I was ice fishing on Monday (with it 70 degrees out, in shorts and a t-shirt), I tied some extra line to the lanyard, weighted it and left it in 3 feet of water for 20 minutes total. This was just with paper towel in the case. I'll check tonight and see if it floats with the phone in it. I'm not willing to drop my case in the toilet, sorry, I'd want a new case afterwards.

You did enough to convince me. Im totally sold... now to just wait for the case to hit 30-50 bucks. $80 is too large. I'll get a cheaper one till then.
As for a toilet fall... i'm looking an impact before water submersion is all. Most of the time it hits the inner bowl first. BUT who text will standing over the toilet... i would never admit to that one. Same thing with the swimming pool... slip, side of the pool... bounces into water.

You'll be happy with the RedPepper case. I mostly got mine for fishing and swimming. If it gets wet it will only be for a few seconds anyway but I wanted to test it to see how waterproof it actually is when left under water.
Seidio case is getting sent back. 3 ft of water about a minute water inside..... Such a bummer... all seals check and left it in a bowl of water for 15 minutes when i first got it no issues maybe 3 feet was to much for it....

Build quality: chipping scratching?

Hello everyone, since this thread was closed, I thought I'd reopen the discussion.
I'm currently waiting for my preorder to ship, but as of right now there is no specified date in Spain (just mid April). So I thought I'd ask you guys:
What do you think of the build quality? Do you see any potential issues in the near future? I saw the video of that guy scratch his G5 body very easily with a box cutter, of course, it's a box cutter! But do any of you think that will actually chip or scratch with normal usage? Like in your pocket, leaving it on the table, in your bag with other things? I do this all the time with my G4, G3, and every other device, but I have never seen such a video that a guy can literally take off the entire layer with little effort.
So people with devices, have any of you noticed or felt like the primer layer is weak or fragile enough to chip, break off, crack or come off by itself with little effort or every day wear? I'm planning on keeping this device for at least a year! (And yes, a case is on its way, but sometimes I do like to move around without a case - after all, these phones are designed without a case in mind...)
Thanks
The coating seems pretty durable, but I always use a skin on the phone so when I go to sell it it's in mint condition when I peel that skin off. I also keep the pocket it rides in free of other objects. I am sure if you took a box cutter to any phone, it would cause damage.

That's good to know. I just felt like in the video it looked like it was very "soft" or malleable. I just wanted to see what actual owners thought about it . I'm excited to get mine!
It's durable so far. been putting in my pocket with keys and no scratches, dents or dings. Dropped twice off the back of my couch last night onto my hard wood floor and my heart skipped a beat - no damage at all.
I prefer no case. The only thing that will really f-up your phone is dust/dirt as it will scratch everything

There are reports in some threads about small drops and keys dinging and scratching the phone.
With that said, it mostly depends on how it falls. I've heard of people's G4 body/screen cracking from five foot drops onto carpet. I've accidentally tossed mine eight feet in the air and had it land face down on pavement without a scratch, and that was using a Rinke Slim case.

That thread was closed due to op only wanting to troll.
From what I gather you need to intentionally cut into the phone in order to chip. Falls may do it too

Also he was cutting with enough force to pretty badly scratch the aluminum itself, I don't know how you could reasonably expect a coating to do better...

And just to add, the phone though light has a solid heft to it (if that makes any sense). All of this talk of it being plastic has me fuming. I tapped the back and sides of the phone lightly on my granite counter top and there is no way in hell plastic makes a sound like that. I tried the same with my G3 and there are 2 distinct sounds...

Not to worry the people who are complaining on it don't and won't ever get one and merely parrot what someone else says. Um is one such

Haha, very good.
What people i hear are saying is it does not feel like metal in the hand. LG promised, LG lied, we are disappointed, bla, bla....
it would seem that reviewers are adamant we should live in a world where ALL phones are anodised 'premium' flat slabs !!
Some companies beg to differ.
What is so godamn premium about aluminium. Its the cheapest metal to use. Its soft and dents like anything.

How is the leather back on the G4 holding up after nearly a year. Corners still peeling but never went beyond. The leather changed colour. The back on this is harder than leather.
So I appear to have developed a small chip on the top left side. I have been extremely careful with this phone in every way. Always in an empty pocket and set down carefully. Might have to get it exchanged.

See that's the thing, I didn't coddle my G4. I liked the feel of the leather, and I'm absolutely certain that I have bumped into stuff while it is in my pocket, that's the facts of life. You can't really avoid that. What I saw in another review yesterday was that in 8 days the device began to chip at the bottom where the magic slot is located. That's from normal usage. I'm very inclined to give it a shot! I loved and still love my G4, but I'm worried that the G5 might not hold up past a few months without seriously degrading the build quality [emoji19]

I hope you're wrong.
My 2 samsungs are very resistant : the Note 1 has felt 3-4 times, and the borders have just a liitle impact on a corner.
The Note 3 et Note 1 's paint are ok since the first day, no scratches, and the screens are ok too, without protection (just flip cover)
Samsung's phone are strong, hoping my future G5 is too :-/

Samsung were very strong devices. The last two years have been very fragile if dropped. The S7E I have now feels like I need to keep it in a diaper... I could drop my note, note 2 or 4. LG G4 too! But if the G5 begins to chip soon after... For the love of God! Hopefully what people are saying is true: there is a factory that has issues, but it's one of the three that are producing! So that's good...

Camera Lens Scratches

I posted over at Reddit that I had some camera scratches I couldn't figure out how I got. Turns out lots of people are reporting camera lens damage.
https://www.reddit.com/r/lgg6/comments/648ucd/camera_scratches/
Anyone here seeing scratches across the camera lens?
--- Update
They aren't scratches, its a coating that is very easily scratched. Possibly only affects black units, could just be easier to see.
How to I wrote up https://www.reddit.com/r/lgg6/comments/64h13y/how_to_fix_camera_scratches/
Update - No scratches still.

I haven't, but then again I have mine in a case.
Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk
I heard that the camera lens is covered with Gorilla Glass 4, which would make it just as scratch resistant as most phones out there. It is, however, flush with the rest of the phone, so it could easily be scratched if not in a case.
I don't have any scratches. I just looked at it with my big magnifier lamp and not a single scratch.
I had a case before my phone came (like the OP in the link). I'm very gentle with my stuff though. Don't put it in pocket with keys. When it's in the purse, it's facing fabric.
Mine is scratched. Only went without a case for 2 days. I am also careful with my phone but it seems that simply setting it down on a table has scratched my camera glass. I can't believe it would scratch that easily.

Ouch. I dropped mine on asphalt the day after I put it in a case. I heard it bounce on the ground three times. I was so lucky.

You can still jump with minor nicks and scratches. That's considered normal wear and tear according to the jump guidelines.

Look at this durability video. Granite can supposedly scratch the lens if you're not careful. So yay it's not sticking out... but not strong enough to slide around.
The rest of the phone is well made though

Yes, but it shouldn't be allowed to happen because it could potentially cause a crack.

They aren't scratches, its a ****ty coating as I just found out.
I used Mcguire's polishing compound on a Dremel polishing wheel at low speed and its all gone. The darkish coating came off and its perfect again. Looks brand brand new. I have no idea if it was anti glare, or was supposed to be removed before shipment. The picture quality seems the same.

Nice! I wonder if they added the coating due to the possibility of crack of v20. Not going to attempt to remove mine just yet.
No idea, but so many people are going to return over this issue. This might sink this phone if they don't stop putting this coating on immediately.
Other forums are quoting this thread already.

With your mention of a coating, it's possible they put an oleophobic coating on the camera lens. I don't understand what else you would put on top of GG4.

Honestly, though I'm not saying you all don't have scratches, stuff like this comes up for just about every phone I've ever used. The last was the Note7 where people were claiming that GG5 was the softest material on planet Earth and scratched on denim. Now people are upset the G6 doesn't have GG5 on the front.
I literally just noticed it today. I also only went 2 days without the case. I thought there was a small piece of packing plastic on it. ?

Dumb question, but is it possible some of you are scratching lens when you have cleaned it with certain materials? For example, a napkin...
It reminds me of that coated feeling when you rub the readable side of a CD. I tried cleaning a game once with a paper towel and it gave it a million scratches which made it unreadable. It's possible this film is just as sensitive?
I have yet to clean my lens with anything but my finger
