Does anyone know if whilst travelling, the product below can be used to power an external HDD using a USB power pack to power the HDD whilst connected to the phone?
1 FT USB Y CABLE FOR EXTERNAL - HARD DRIVE USB A TO MICRO B UK

Just wondering if it's possible to maximise the potential of USB on the go without being limited to USB sticks or relying on an external power source to power the HDD...
Thanks for any ideas!

Hello there,
I have a problem when trying to connect my portable HD (250GB) through USB adapter, it say that is not possible to conncet. I though the problem was the adapter, but not because I could connect a regular USB memory.
Anyone has been this problem, and What was the solve?
Thanks in advance
My guess is that the drive is in NTFS format and not something Android can read, like FAT32.
It's either the file system as mentioned by steckums or the usb adapter doesn't provide enough power for the hard disk to run.
Almost all usb hard disk drives require "high power" from the usb port which the adapter can not deliver. It should say so in the error message. You need a powered usb hub to connect a usb drive to the Tab.

Tanks
Yes, the following has been reported to work as long as the HDD is formated to FAT32:
USB HDD - powered USB hub - USB Adapter - Galaxy Tab 10.1

I'll try it, and report
I tried but didnt work.
I connected the HDD to regular hub and nothing, i never know what is a powered hub. Then a reformat the HDD to FAT 32 and the tablet was not able to start.
The last test was try to connect a powered HDD and this one was reconized by tablet but the oroblem was the format.
In conclusion the problem is the power and the format of HDD.
Thanks for your answers

Here is what I've got looking for some input.
I have an Archos A70. I have been using some generic 2GB usb flash drives in host mode.
I purchased the following in the attempt to not have to switch our the FD when traveling so much for movies etc.
Kingston 8GB DataTraveler 101 Generation 2 (G2) USB Flash Drive (Red)
This device gives the USB Host Error " The device requires too much power" when connected to the host cable directly. So I decided to attempt to build a Y cable with the following and the male end of an old USB cable.
3ft USB 2.0 A Male to A Female Extension 28/24AWG Cable
7800mAh Universal External Backup Battery
I cannot post a link to this backup battery so search for the Monoprice 7800mAH
So I went to the female end of the A to A extension cable and cut the Power wire with about an inch or so to spare and connected the extra male end to the Red and Black wires. I left the Black wire intact on the Extension cable just cutting the red wire.
After testing with and exisiting known working 2GB flash drive that it was getting the power from the External battery. I plugged in the 8GB and I still get the USB Host Error " The device requires too much power" just as I did when plugged it into the Host cable before.
The reason I did not cut the power line in the host cable is so I can use it again with devices that don't require the external battery.
Is the 8GB sending something in its ID to tell the Archos 70 that it is a high powered device?

No input on this?
its exactly what u think...
the problem is 2 sided
1. on the one had the device needs the high power - thats what u fix with external battery
2. therefor any USB device negotiates the power consumption with the host on initial plugin - this makes sure u dont "burn" your usb ports...
The only solution i can think of is:
- try using siberes kernel with extrapower for the usb host as this may resolve the "software" problem - it may work but im not sure if its coded into the kernel or into the host chip directy somehow
- if this works stick with your battery imho - and just connect ground and data lines while your battery goes to ground and plus
Hi all
I have a galaxy tab 10.1 standard not rooted with a usb adaptor kit. I first tried to connect a seagate 2TB external expansion desktop hard drive with its own power supply and at first the tab had found it,it showed up as a mini sd symble in the notification and said that it needed to be formatted. I can not remember exactly what it said because it only displayed it twice then never seen the discription again. I also tried to connect a samsung S2 portable 1TB hard drive, when i connected this drive the notification was a usb symble and said high powered usb divice that needs to have power supply.
This is what i have tried with the seagate i reformatted it in FAT32 also in smaller partitions of 150GB and even cnnected it through a powered usb hub even though it had its own power supply.
This is what i have tried with the Samsung S2- 1TB Portable without its own power supply, i have reformatted to FAT32, i have partitioned in smaller 100GB partitions,i have also connected through a powered usb hub and it still comes up with high powered usb device that needs a power supply.
And this is what i have done to the tab, i have done the hard reset, but what i also want to know is that when you are in the reboot mode should i be also erasing the cach memory partition as well as the user memory or should i not play with the cach partition, not shore.
I would really apreciate any help at all on this matter.
Thank you,
Deanosc.
When running on Android, is it possible to connect a
SD card reader via Touchpad's USB port?
(16GB or 32GB SDHC card containing music and video files)
THanks!
Unfortunately, couldn't get it to work myself.
I tried the same setup I use on my SGII, OTG usb cable + USB key.
It might work with a power source. The USB otg cable alone doesn't work. If you get a USB splitter cable, and plug the extra end into a power source it should work. But ... if you have a power source like a computer you can just plug the TouchPad and card reader both into the computer, and transfer the files that way.
The only way to make it work on the go would be with a battery powered USB power supply and have both the otg cable and the splitter ... not very convenient.
In a pinch I have used the otg cable on my phone, then transferred the file over Bluetooth to the TouchPad while in Android. Again, not very convenient, but it worked.

this is setup that is cleanest that the other forum uses..
http://www.amazon.com/Solar-Powered-Battery-Charger-Adapter/dp/B006DVMW92
plus the otg cable..
no messy cable tangles..
besides solar charging, the TP's charger will charge hub
then mount it..
unmount when done..
As far as I know connecting a card reader needs the USB host mode and this is not available in Android 2 (http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/usb/host.html). Also the hardware has to be capable of that (maybe TP is). We have to wait until ICS is available on the touchpad.
I'd like to know if there can be more done w/ the TouchPad... i.e. more USB host support for other things (external hdd, controller etc)
Hi there!
I've got this cable:
Black Color Micro USB 3.0 9Pin OTG Host Flash Disk Cable with USB Power for Samsung Galaxy Note3 N9000
http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00IWEFNQ2/ref=pe_386430_30332290_TE_3p_dp_1
Looks like when I connect battery to OTG, the power goes to external drive only, not to SGP.
I am a bit confused. OTG doesn't let me connect both Passport drive and power battery at the same time.
I never used OTG with power connection before.
Should it work like that or something wrong?..
Hi,
Yes, that is how this OTG w/USB Power works.. as you can see the "USB Power" comes out of the USB Host connection (not the 9Pin Micro USB plug), so therefore the USB power is for powering the USB drive or device you are connecting to the Samsung Device... this is generally used for USB Hard Drives that require extra power to turn them on, etc.
If you wanted to have a USB Drive plugged into your NotePro and also Charge the NotePro you would need something with the USB Power coming from the USB 9Pin connector. I do not believe such a cable exists or is possible... but I could be wrong.
Thanks for clarification, Leighm0. I suspected that...
