Hi guys,
I was wondering if anyone know's of an easy way/app to turn off data usage on my hero please? I'm off abroad for a few days and have been told by Orange i will be charged £6 per 1megbyte!! Don't really wanna get involved in that to be fair...i have been through and disabled various option's i could find but wondered if there was a more full proof method?
ta
Moj
I would assume this would work
setting/wireless control/ unclick mobile network
indeed it would but if i want to use the mobile for phone and or text i will still need the 'mobile network' to be enabled but somehow disable the data side of things...
On home screen press and hold in vacant place> HTC Widget> Settings> Mobile.....
Turn on/off at the touch!
I wanted to know fro you all out there if the was a way that the 3G will come on when it is needed and then turns it self off after it is done? Is there a setting or and app that i can use? I hate having to turn it on and off when i want to use it. Help me please i am kind of new to android but i am loving it so far. And always thanks for your help.
Ok I guess I am going to be the nice guy here.
To stop apps from constantly pulling data:
On the home screen, go to: Menu > Settings > Wireless Settings > Mobile Network > Uncheck Always on mobile. Than accept the dialogue that pops up that tells you some apps will be angry.
Now if you want to toggle if apps can use data, put the mobile network widget on your home screen. Click it on to allow, click it and keep if off now to not allow data pull.
Hope this is what you are looking for.

I have many tips on saving the battery from death during the day.
1. When charging the device, after you unplug it, wait about 2 minutes and plug it back in until the green light returns. This adds the discharged amount back to the battery from the trickle charge kernel.
2. Go into settings> wireless and networks> mobile networks> roaming> set to sprint only
3. Go to settings> wireless and networks > mobile networks> > disable mobile data always on.
4. Use the HTC settings Widgets in personalize to ad the 4g, 3g, Bluetooth, mobile network, profile, GPS, and airplane mode to toggle them on and off most of them off unless needed.
5. Go into settings> display> brightness> and set it to a comfortable viewing brightness level.
6. Disable live wallpapers.
7. Use darker wallpapers to conserve on the light emitted from the screen.
8. Go into settings> accounts and sync> and turn off auto sync.
9. In the email client aka mail NOT gmail if you use it instead of gmail, hit menu> settings> send and receive and set all to manual and peak to the same time such as 12am to 12am.
10. Use wifi at home instead of 3g. it saves battery and does not search for the signal consistanly.

Doesn't this setting turn off any accounts from syncing automatically if they are setup? (I.E. Gmail, Facebook, News, Stocks, etc., etc.)
Maybe say that as a disclaimer for this one, I'm sure that most people here actually use gmail and other apps that autosync.
Also, and I'm not trying to start the fire here, this isn't exactly Development Material. Your intentions are honorable and commendable, but misplaced. This should be in General or maybe Q&A with a title similar to <Battery Life Tips> or something of that nature.
This isn't exactly tips on anything, it's battery life tips. When that changes, you can change the title to something else.
But either way, thanks for the tips.
Cheers.
Turning off mobile data what will do?I guess you should explain, right?afaik unchecking this box, you will not lose your data, but when the phone its inactive it will be disabled right? And re activate data when its active again the phone, having this option checked your data will never be disabled....i'm wondering what happen with apps like whatsapp? When you don't even wake up your phone, you will not receive the Messages

Don't drop your evo 3d in water. It causes faster battery drain and some of the buttons may not work.

This isn't true for LCD screens. LCDs use roughtly the same power to display black vs white. If you are talking about an AMOLED screen, it would be correct.

Issues with these tips (should disclaimer OP):
Most of these tips are for battery savings only and will disrupt regular data. For a user like me, that uses exchange email and have programs that need always on data, this would cause me issues.
Individual issues:
1. Not really sure this works.
2. If you are in a spotty area and you lose Sprint data service, this would stop your phone from roaming which would cause you to lose data service until you are back into Sprints service area. Roaming does drain your battery as your phone is constantly looking to get back on Sprint's network but for people like me, this is not an option
3. Disabling this setting disables push email.
4. Good tip
5. This setting only saves battery if you set it to a very low level. This could be frustrating to people that use there phone alot indoors and outdoors. As such, if you set it low indoors you will not be able to see the screen outdoors so you will have to change the setting to something higher. Better off letting the phone decide.
6. Good tip Live wallpapers are a cpu hog and can be battery hogs.
7. Does not matter. LCD uses a backlight that shines through a screen of colors. The brightness of the backlight is what causes battery drain. If you had your backlight (brightness) at 100% and you had a pure black background, it would use more power than if you had a pure white background and had your brightness set at 25%.
8. Once again, this would cause issues with people using their email client for emails such as myself that uses their phone for work. I want to get my emails when they are pushed. Push technology does not constantly use data, it keeps a TCP connection open with the servers and when an email comes in, it sends a small data packet to your phone to tell it to check for email as there is an email message waiting.
9. See 8
10. +10000 If you can use wifi, use it. It is a battery saver.
This is not a post bashing your list, I just wanted to make sure that people knew of the consequences of doing these tweaks.
Great info
listening dl-_-lb to MP3s on my Shooter 3D
The tip #1 works great for me because sometimes I have picked it up AFTER charging it and it reads 95-97% and it charges immediately after charging replugged. hope someone tries to confirm it does help some.
Great topic. Thanks for the tips

Yes it does. This has been tested over and over again. Why don't you try it yourself. I have tested multiple times with my hero, evo, and now evo 3d.

Mine is off and my push mail works fine.
As a general comment tho, most of the orig tips are well known and sadly turn your "always connected smart phone" into a pretty dumb phone.
Evo3d's battery life when not actually "USING" it is pretty darn great, esp compared to the Evo or Evo Shift. Most folks are within 12 hours of a charger of some kind, and since it's a generic type charger, you can keep several at home, some at work, one in your car, and probably most of your friends have one around.
My opinion is that everyone needs to worry less about the battery and more about enjoying your smart phone the way it was meant to be used.
For people who don't want to leave the data on because of email, if you setup your Gmail with forwarding and use your Sprint phone number text messaging email as the forwarding address, you get a text message when you get an email and then you can download the entire message manually at that time if you need to. It works instantaneously.
Your Sprint text email address is [email protected]. Replace the x's with your 10 digit phone number.
I use Google talk too much to allow any data disruption in an attempt to save battery.

I thought there was a feature on these phone that you can set it to turn it off when you leave your house and then turn back on when you get back home. I just can't find how to do it.

Llama can do this as well and its free.
You could go the cool guy route and use NFC tags. That's what I'll be doing.

There is an app in the Market called Auto Wifi Toggle. I use that, works great. There is also an app called Power Saver Settings (ICS) by Derek Reynolds (aka myn on xda) that shows some hidden settings in ICS. There is an option that is turned off by default that will turn off wifi when it isn't connected, so it works the same way but I'm not sure how well that works. I've been using AWT for years now. Only one issue that I find is that when restoring from TB, it doesn't work until you reconfigure it. No big deal

It might only catch the disconnect event, meaning, you may need to enable that option, connect to a wifi network, exit the range of that wifi network and it should trigger wifi off. There may also be a small waiting period before it does it, not sure. But that would only make sense to wait 30sec - 1 min before shutting off wifi.

I waited for about 4-5 minutes. Perhaps these ics hidden power saving features simply weren't implemented.
I personally use Y5 Battery Saver from the store. Simple, free, and turns WiFi off when you are out of range.
what is the best way to save
battery?
If you don't get urgent calls or no calls at all (like me) then while using you phone put it in flight mode
Also install a task killer you like from the market and kill all the processes you don't need (maps, play service) or go to settings and force stop them
And if you are addicted to your mobile (like me) then plug the charger with extention wire or give up your addiction

Put this together a long time ago and it was for the Motorola Droid Bionic. Hopefully some of the items will help you:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are having short battery life here’s a list of things that can help. Just read through the list and select the items that fit with the way you want to use your phone. Not all items will work for everyone and this list was written for the Droid Bionic but most should work for your phone too:
- Don't use an automatic task killer--not even the one that comes with the phone. Reboot your phone and look at what's running. If anything that you've installed is running and there's no reason for it, then uninstall it and find an alternative that behaves. Ignore any stock apps that run on boot as I've found them to be more or less benign.
- Weather widgets, live wallpapers, news/social feeds, any app or service that you use that runs--do without it if you can. If you can’t do without it, lengthen it’s refresh time.
- Don't use antivirus
- Set your WIFI sleep policy to never. The default is "turn off when screen turns off". This will cause the wifi to reconnect every time you open the phone. From any Home Screen select Menu/Settings/Wireless & Networks/ and then use the Menu button to see some new options - select Advanced. Then select Wifi Sleep Policy and set it to Never. Home key to return to Home Screen.
- If you have access to wifi, leave it toggled on as it is more efficient than 3G. Wifi consumes less battery power than 3G.
- I leave GPS toggled on too by the way. Apps use it as needed. When I'm done with Maps or an app that uses it, I'm sure to return to the home screen so GPS can stop. Under wireless settings turn on "Google location services" so that an app is able to use network resources to get your location instead of GPS. I have "VZW location services" turned off--don't know why that option is even there. By the way, I increase the speed of voice output > text to speech > speech rate because I like the directions to get spit out faster. That saves a bit of battery. Turning off the display and just listening for directions help. Also, often I just get the directions and then exit back to the home screen: GPS uses so much battery I try to get it over with ASAP.
- I have my battery set to "Performance Mode" and data is on all the time because I am on call 24x7. If you don't mind, try out a more conservative battery profile to save more gobs of energy.
- Set screen brightness to "Automatic"
- Under Accounts, click on any account listed and turn off sync for any items that you're not interested in syncing. For example, Google Books if you don't use it.
- Don't use Backup Assistant--I prefer syncing my contacts with Google. You don't need both. Also go into your contacts > menu > display options > backup assistant > UNCHECK. Also do contacts > menu > more > settings > contact storage > and select your Google account and "remember this choice"
- Turn on Bluetooth only when you are going to use it.
- Consider turning off voice privacy. This may not be a big deal but it will save some processing (and therefore battery). It may also improve call quality.
-Turn off haptic feedback, animations, and any un-needed sounds in Android settings and in your apps
- Set your screen timeout to as low a time as you can stand (I use 1 minute) and manually turn the screen off when you’ve finished using the phone.
- Turn off in-pocket detection. In-Pocket Detection has been the source of many issues already.
- Keyboard: turn off vibrate on key press and sounds for any keyboards you use
- Use a red or black screen background. On the original Droid screen--not sure about this Bionic screen--red was the most efficient color that could be displayed. To save maximum battery, in regards to wallpaper, install app “No Wallpaper”. It will allow you to select No Wallpaper as your wallpaper. The screen background will be totally black.
- Camera app: I like keeping location on and flash on auto. Consider turning location off or at least returning to the home screen ASAP when using camera if location for camera is on.
- In stock browser the default home page is Google and it uses your location. This is a bad idea as it can waste your battery for no reason. Make something else your home page and make sure to close any web page that uses your location when you're done viewing it.
- Charge your phone via the wall charger instead of computer USB as it is faster. Also, don't use long USB cords -- use regular power extension cords instead. I stick with the charger that came with the phone. Put the phone on charger when you go to bed every night.
- Consider installing the Home Replacement app Zeam. It is basic app that uses very few resources and will help with battery power.
- Emails: I don't know what email app you use, but try this. It saves battery power and in some cases emails arrive quicker. This scheme will have you using only the Gmail app on the phone for all email accounts whether they are pop3 accounts or Gmail. Using Gmail as your own personal push mail server
- If you are using Live Wall Papers, stop!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If battery life is still bad: Consider doing a factory reset (Galaxy Nexus users beware!! A Factory Reset will wipe your sdcard of everything – backup accordingly): These have gotten pretty painless lately by following these simple steps: 1. Make sure Backup and Restore are checked in the Privacy setting. 2. When going through the setup after the reset, turn on wifi as soon as you can (assuming it is available). 3. After you have entered your Gmail account info, you will be presented with a screen that has two check boxes. Basically they are "Do you want Google to backup and restore this phone”. Make sure you check both of those. Your apps will then automatically reinstall (paid and free). Set the phone aside for a minute or two and let the apps download and install. 4. If rooted, use an app such as titanium backup to restore data only to select apps such as Tapatalk and you will not have to re-enter all your login information. I do this for 3-4 apps (Tapatalk, SPB Shell, etc.).
I've been flashing new roms/updates about once per day lately and I can be up and running with all my apps and settings back in place in less than 15 minutes. It's pretty painless now.
