is there any way to get stock messaging... - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

back? this bubble **** has to go.

yes there is a way. there are several, however older, threads about this. or at least posts. search either the gingerblur or greyblur threads

you can try this:
if you are running stock ROM rename /system/app/conversations.apk to conversations.apk.bak.
place the attached mms.apk in /system/app.
reboot
the mms.apk is from the gingerblur mod. I'm not positive if you need the whole gingerblur package for it to work, but it's worth a try

Screwed up mms aosp installation

Okay, so I'm using bionix 1.3.1 and I was attempting to install the mms.apk file without flashing through clockwork just to see how I would do it.
I've messed up, and now I don't have the stock mms app or the aosp app. I've tried to install the aosp apk file by using root explorer.
I've also tried moving the file to the system/apps folder and installing but I keep getting an error saying file cannot be parsed. Finally, I tried flashing with clockwork and it won't work now.
What I'm trying to figure out is why none of these things work, I would liek to understand how the operating system works better in other words. Also, if possible I'd like to avoid reflashing bionix and wiping.
Move the .apk to system/apps
Reboot

You don't install a system app
It was already in system/apps. Didn't work until I changed the permissions now though.

Need important advice on Themeing.

Hi guys. I was wondering a few things. When you theme your phone successfuly, Im under the asumption that if you re-theme it with another them it goes right on top of it correct? How do you remove a theme and is it possible to do that? Or if there are different thems out there you like, how do you go about switching them out? Just keep putting them on top of eachother? Any advice would be great. Thanks guys.

I appreciate the link. But all its showing me is how to actually create a theme. I cant find where the answers to my questions are for the person that just installs the themes but doesnt make them?
Depending on what version of software you are running (1.26, 1.57, 1.83 ATT) I think the best method to completely re-theme is to use a program like Titanium Backup * Root, free version from the market, to back up your apps and data. SBF flash the proper version of deodexed files for your current software version to completely eradicate the current theme. After that apply your new theme and then re-install Titanium Backup to restore your apps and data.
You will most likely need to use gingerbreak to regain root after flashing the SBF. Since this will, most often, result in a clean wipe of your internal and external SD card, make sure to back them both up to your computer before flashing the SBF and proceeding. That way you can just put anything back onto the internal or external memory that isn't put back by titanium.
Putting one theme on top of another really won't hurt anything most of the time, but if the new theme doesn't use all of the same files as the previous theme did then you will end up with items from the old version that weren't replaced.

You can pull fresh copies of everything that the themes change (framework-res.apk, services.jar, blur-res.apk, are the main ones) and make a CWM update with those in it. Then you can install a theme, and in order to uninstall it all you need to do is go into CWM and use the backup update.zip.
To switch themes, I just keep all themes I have downloaded in a folder called THEMES on my phone. I just boot into CWM and use the backup .zip I made, then I install the new theme .zip and reboot.
If your talking about Gingerblur/Grey blur I think a SBF flash would be your best way to uninstall.
Thanks for the tip guys. I actually had GingerBlur installed before but wasnt all that fond of it. I went ahead and flashed the sbf of 1.8.3 back. Now I have the HoneyGlow theme installed and actually I like it a lot. I was just wondering what its like re-flashing themes over top of themes. I have Tansfers (I think thats the name) Recovery already installed with root access. I got the files already saved on the computer, but thats good advice to put the updates in folders on the phone and do it that way.
Yes, now On im gonna take that external SD card out when I flash. I also tried using Titanium and having a hard time with understanding how it works fully lol.

yes you can flash new themes on top of old ones. They just replace various framework files. all themes modifies the same set of framework files pretty much. so when you flash on top, it overwrites the current one with the new one, that's it. the important thing to remember is to flash a theme meant for your rom because framework files can change from rom to rom, so you may get bootloops (soft bricks) if you flash incompatible frameworks.

Theme problems...

I downloaded matted blue theme earlier today and installed. I didn't like it. So after that I downloaded and installed the steel blue theme which I don't even know if that one is working right because the icons aren't different. Anyways I downloaded and installed the theme and didn't uninstall the matted blue theme because I wasn't sure how to.....now my Gmail wont load it keeps force closing and for some reason there is 2 text message apps that neither can't be uninstalled and I am getting double the texts at once....does anyone have any ideas to help please. I tried going into the removable drive via USB to computer and just deleting the folder that in boot menu I tried to update.zip and it said it was looking for drive e: and couldn't find anything....I am lost and fairly annoyed please help.
Deders *****es!!!!!!!
Why dont you reflash a SBF?
Use the un-theme CWM (found in the apps theme forum) zip. Or the deodexed CWM zip (found in the Dev forum). Some themes, such as MattedBlues, include themed apps, which won't be overwritten if the new theme doesn't include them. A tip to theme users: always check whats included inside the zip and backup your files. I personally did a complete backup after deodexing and before installing any themes so I'll never have to reflash an sbf.
I hate to say this but I don't know how to do that
Did a back up earlier today and am running it now well see what happens
im running back up now, can I ask you how to do that?
I hate to say this but even if you can swim you should first test the water.
I assume you know how to use the CWM zips since you've already flashed themes. I also assume you are deodexed since those themes applied correctly.
The deodex zip is the same as GladiAtrix or GingerBlur only minus the themes, they both convert an odex system to a deodex system.
Flashing the deodexed CWM will return you to a "fresh" system. The un-theme CWM is the same thing but it only resores the files themers go after. I would first try the un-theme CWM as the full deodex CWM may cause a few easily recoverable issues, such as unroot.
So my suggestion is flash this CWM first to return you to "stock". Then flash the theme of your choosing.
Good luck.
Hey thank you so much I did a restore, for a lil bit there I wasn't able to get into the boot loader. I appreciate it alot though I prolly will use that theme unloader quite a bit
ouch dude this was A VERY EASY FIX... all you had to do was go to manage apps click on gmail and clear data that fixes gmail. then just use titanium backup and uninstall one of the messaging apps(i specifically uninstalled "messaging 2.2.1")...
P.S. Nottach maybe you can add this bit of info in your post for the theme
Thnx a lot that was a huge help. I just got done backing everything up with TB....that really is a awesome app. And for the thread post idea thank you twice sir. May I ask what u replaced your messaging app. With ? And you didn't cause any instability in ur system hy deleting that message 2.2.1.? Since I'm guessing you removed the one that came with the rom. Thnx again.
Deders *****es!!!!!!!
I've had no preblems or instability issues since you're still left with a messaging app
Oh, well since I did a restore on my phone I have only the one message app. 2.2.1. Crazy stuff for real
Deders *****es!!!!!!!
So to clarify, the un theme cwm will work with the 2.1.1 ?

How to: Push apps(.apk) to/system/app(and various other "how to's")

I am NOT responsible if you screw up your phone...duh...but anyways...
First thing i want to say is that for this and any other type of edits similar to this I will be giving instructions for if you are using ROOT EXPLORER. These things can be done easily with other file explorers also. As long as you can browse as root and mount /system as r/w(read/write) . Root explorer makes this very simple and easy.
Now how to do this:
1.When you download an application it usually comes in an .apk format.
2.Using root explorer navigate to the .apk you have downloaded or extracted from a .zip file.
3.Long press the .apk file and choose "MOVE"
4. navigate to /system/app
5. Press the gray button on top of the window you are now viewing that says "Mount R/W"((it will be next to where root explorer shows how much space you have available for the partition you are viewing))
6. Press paste.
7. ::VERY IMPORTANT::you cannot skip this step. Go to the .apk you just pasted and long press it.
Now choose "Permissions"
change the permissions to be rw-r--r--....it will look like this in the boxes
(X=a checked box. _=empty box)
Owner:X X _
Group: X _ _
Others:X _ _
8. now simply reboot your phone and presto it is now a system app. and it wont be wiped away if you perform a data wipe.
If you would like to move an app that you have downloaded from the market to /system , just simply go to /data/app and long press the apk for the app you would like to push to system and follow steps 3-8.
this way you can make an app such as a launcher app your "system launcher" so it wont be wiped if u data wipe. And you could also delete your stock launcher or rename it to .bak and you can have just one launcher running at all times instead of two.
I would also like to state that I intend to grow this post and this thread into a collection of various how to's , including, but not limited to, Basic rom flashing instructions, Theme flashing instructions, definitions for the acronyms we use all the time, and any other general how to's anyone may suggest to us.

####BACKUP your current system with BSR before doing anything!####
1. SBF or nand restore to stock 2.3.4 (if on completely unmodified and fully bloated stock 2.3.4 skip to step 2)
2. Apply 2.3.5 (412 build) in stock recovery after placing on external sd card root and renaming update.zip (reboot phone and hold down volume, press down arrow until you see android recovery, press up volume button, when on next screen press both volume buttons at same time. Wipe cache and flash update.zip)
3. Root using zergrush (with phone unpluged unzip and open zergrush program....make sure unknown sources in applications is checked and that debuggung is checkmarked. I also checkmark stay awake as zergrush recommends setting screen timeout for ten minutes. Connect your phone and then check it is connected as charge only. Hit spacebar and then the phone will reboot after the zerglings lol find a way in and your rooted)
***Rootkeeper has caused issues with some roms aborting install.***
4. Install & then boot into bootstrap
5. Wipe data, cache and dalvik
6. Flash 2.3.5 based custom rom from removable sd card & reboot when done.

Q.Can you reflash your current rom?
A.Yes you can reflash your current rom again. It will reset any theming you have done or flashed back to the roms presets. It will not delete your downloaded apps but will reset all system apps to the rom presets. You just need to wipe cache and dalvik in BSR before you reflash the SAME rom your currently using. This is generally true for updates to your rom unless there is a kernel change.
-------------------------------------------------------
Search Key as dedicated Camera Button Mod (Credit goes to robocuff for letting me know about this)
In root explorer or my favorite paid Root Browser
/system/usr/keylayout. Open the tegra-kbc.kl file in a text editor and find the line that says key 217 SEARCH WAKE_DROPPED and comment it out by putting a # in front of it. Then just add a line that says key 217 CAMERA just below it THE "K" ON BOTH HAVE TO BE LOWER CASE K's. Click save or just back button out. Reboot your phone and you should have it. Root browser creates a backup file called tegra-kbc.kl.bak to revert back just delete the tegra-kbc.kl and then take the .bak off the backup file and reboot.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q. Can is nandriod back and forth from 2.3.4 to 2.3.5
A. You can nadroid back and forth however it will not change the kernel. If you restore a Eclipse 2.0.2 backup and even if the backup was on a 2.3.5 build you will be on the 2.3.4 kernel.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Advice: For what it's worth. I noticed when Eclipse 2.0 came out and peper pointed this out. Devs and mod makers create these things with instructions and make them based of certain recommendations/prerequisites and if at all possible follow the instructions and recommendations for use. The results they are intending to give you are based off of what they build them. If you want the best results from a rom or mod follow the given instructions. If you read carefully and follow the instructions to a "T" you'll get what you want. All these phones are the same so I am sure some issues people have with a rom or mod can be fixed easily by following the directions/recommendations /prerequisites given. That's why they are there.
Im not trying to discourage playing around with something just saying if you have an issue. Reread the provided instructions and retry it following them exactly. You'll probably find a happy result and less headache.
Happy flashing
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------How to change phone to 3G only
Open the phone app, dial *#*#4636#*#*, then go to phone information, then scroll down and change CDMA Auto (PRL) to EvDo only, then you are done Edit: This must be done again after a reboot. If I find a way that sticks after a reboot I will update this.

Hy ash,
I was thinking about this a couple month's ago, thought it would be possible got distracted and forgot about it. Guess it is, nicely laid out walk-through.
This is an outstanding idea for a thread.
I VOTE FOR A STICKY How about it mod
Thanks imgburn
Just wanna day that motcher and I are working together on this thread to try and create a general how to thread that can be linked to instead of having to rewrite the same directions for things over and over every time the questions get asked lol.
Also...to get this to be a sticky just pm a mod or "report" it with other and explain u think it should be stickied.(another how to? Lol)
But I don't feel this thread has reached sticky status just yet. Im computer less for a day or two but as soon as I get it back I will be adding more to this.
battery calibration, bump charge...and suggestions for better battery...basic stuff that gets asked a thousand times lol....
Great thread! Let's hope it gets read! Seeing as how most stickied threads don't get read (or so it seems) maybe it should remain unstickied...jk

Quick question on nandroid backups. I backed up my Eclipse 2.0.2 via BSR and then went back to stock 2.3.4. I'm wanting to go back to Eclipse 2.0.2 which is on 2.3.5.
Can I just restore my nandroid 2.0.2 without having to apply the 2.3.5 update? Or, do I have to do the 2.3.5 update, reroot, apply BSR and then restore my Eclipse 2.0.2 nandroid backup?
Thanks!

Does BSR restore the 2.3.5 kernel from 2.3.4? I wouldn't think it would due to that pesky locked BL.

Nandroiding back and forth between 2.3.4&2.3.5 is not recommended..
It will NOT restore kernel going between backups.
This will eventually cause u issues.
Motcher...u might want to change ur answer above to reflect that it is POSSIBLE but not recommended

I will put that but wanna find out the kernel numbers and I have no clue how I got onto 2.3.5 build 413. I will have to fix that when I get my replacement if it is an X2...if its not...oh the dilemma.
Here is the other thing. Last time I sbf'd I nandroided to my Eclipse 2.0.2 which is on the 413 build and the kernel is 00005 so thats why I am wondering if it does indeed moved the kernel.

What motcher was trying to figure out is if you restore a nandroid made on 2.3.4 while you're running 2.3.5 , week it restore the 2.3.4 kernel as well.
I am 99.9% certain that it Will NOT change the kernel back to 2.3.4 kernel

[Q] Apps adding to ROM before flashing

Get 7zip if you don't have it. Use 7zip to "open" the rom, not extract it.
Copy the .apk's to /system/app or data/app whatever's appropriate, then close the zip. Be aware some apps have dependent files or are dependent on the framework so they might not work.
Thanks, will give it a spin!
So technically, I can use all the .apks from my titanium backup save, and put them into system/app and have it all flash pretty quick >10 minutes and be good?
Just curious seems like a better idea than
Flashing ROM
Waiting for first boot
setup wifi
going to market to find and install titanium backup
waiting for everything to finish restoring after 20 minutes
etc.
Not sure about that bc of some variables with the services.jar and framework-res files but for generic apps like Angry Birds or something like that it seems like it should work. Batch restore suck with TB and usually cause more problems than worth it, so this could be a better option for that.
I am piece some theme parts for a Froyo build and was thinking of trying this out.
Tip for you buddy. Make a flashable zip of Titanium and you can flash it right after your ROM as either a /system or /data app. Then when your ROM boots up, launch it, search for your back up folder, restore your pro key and away you go without ever logging into the market. I do this all the time.
Love your new signature btw.
I've been doing this for a while now, but I do it with root explorer. I extract the ROM onto my SD, replace the mms.apk, and add a few others in system/app, then rezip, and flash. Haven't tried putting anything like TB in data/app, but probably will now.
