I'm curious about something... there are some nice tutorials and have been some good effort from some devs to add support for custom ROMS for people that flashed the official GB 20g.
My question is, why would anyone update to the official GB just to flash the same ROMs that were already available before?
Is there any advantage? Out of my noobness I can see none, zero... just baseband problems.

Some people just like their stuff to be branded. And people tend to think that official ROMs would be bug-free and more stable than custom ROMs. Its based on personal choices and mostly they would be returning back to the custom ROMs IMO
Well, not everyone even knows about custom roms, nor wants to try them. Some people just want a working phone. But I do have to say that official firmware IS more stable than a custom rom. Of course even official ones have bugs, but you rarely get kernel panics, MAJOR battery drain, lose functions etc with the official ones.
Sometimes the custom kernel is at fault not the custom rom you see.

I agree with everything you said. I never had more battery life like when I was using stock froyo with franco.kernel. Heavy wi-fi, 3G and GPS always on, moderate gaming, 480/748 OC, a whole bunch of widgets running and about 40 hours of battery life.
Sure custom roms brings lots of advantages like much more overall performance, especially CM7, but they also bring small annoying bugs and, despite everyone saying otherwise, major battery drain. I have tested all custom roms available for O1 and none of then gave more than 12 hours of battery life.
I'm now playing with official GB 20g and franco.kervel since yesterday, let's see how the battery behaves.
Anyway, I understand that DEVs want to give they ROMs support for the new baseband since it will soon be installed on the majority of devices, but my question still unwanswered: Is there any advantages on installing a custom rom over 20g? Will it be more stable or have more performance comparing to installing it over 10x?

Well ever since buying my galaxy s2 I have been flashing different roms.
It's got to the stage where I'm flashing about ten times a day .
Anyway I decided to go back to the stock rom for my carrier and I've found I get better signal, and it seems to be just as smooth as custom roms, and dare I say even less buggy.
So do you guys go for custom roms, or are you happy with stock roms?
And for those that use stock roms do you use unbranded or the carrier stock roms?
Lastly for those on stock roms, do you root or are some of you completely stock untouched.
Thanks
I use MIUI myself. Though I have to say I understand what you're saying. Stock is usually a bit more stable. But all these custom roms are getting more stable with each day. Also I think it would be better if you put up a poll for this type of question

Yeah you're right some of the custom roms are stable enough for everyday use.
But most of them seem to be a work in progress, but obviously that's a good thing as they are constantly improving.
And it's not as though stock roms are perfect.
By the way I don't mean any disrespect to any developers as they are talented and I certainly couldn't do any better.
But the main thing for me is signal, as it's a phone at the end of the day and if I can't make phone calls it's no good.
But even when flashing modems on custom roms I don't get as good a signal as I do on the stock rom for some reason.
MIUI here, best looking android available IMHO.
Stock ROM. I spent sooo long trying different ROMs to get the decent battery life (~1% / hour discharge when idle) that so many people have claimed (and showed) is possible, and finally I've got it with the KF3 firmware, so I'm loathed to touch it again now!
Cognition ROM is the best one available, period
I'm completely stock, with no bugs or problems relating to battery or pink spots or reception, and it's super fast and buttery smooth. Battery lasts me one to two days depending on how I use it, three if it's over a weekend and my 2G etc are off.
I learnt my lesson over custom ROM's on HTC Desire. They didn't add a single thing worth using to the stock ROM, were no faster, and certainly did not improve battery life.

No root either I take it?
You said completely stock so I assume no root.
Oh and are you using a generic stock rom or a the carrier branded rom.
Would it be safe to say that generic stock roms are sometimes better than the carrier branded roms?
Especially as some carriers don't release updates often

Well yes as carrier branded roms may be thought of as custom roms as they have been altered in varying degrees by the carrier .

I used to flash my Hero a lot but have not rooted my SGS2 as I can flash new firmware over ODIN
and am quiet happy with the 13-21 hours usage I get as per my using the phone on a daily basis and I love overnight charges so am cool

I'd have agree Cognition S2 KG6 1.4.1 (have yet to move on to 1.4.2 - happy with my phone as it is) is the fastest and most stable I've found so far. Brilliant battery life and fantastic connection. I dislike the stock apps of official firmware, so always flash a custom rom A.S.A.P. after getting a new phone.
And although not many people any stead in Quadrant i'm getting 4380 after a few initial runs
what are the advantages of flashing ROMS? I've heard that Cyanogen mod 7 is very buggy, so I'll be leaning more towards Lighting ROM or Darky ROM if I do actually end up flashing one. I'm currently running Stock 2.3.5 if that makes any difference.
Thanks!

Most custom ROMS, for example villainROM, are based on samsung firmware , so they bring a close to stock experience, with touchwiz interface, samsung camera, etc... For me the biggest benefit of these ROMs is that they most of the times get rid of samsung and carriers bloatware and go with the latest samsung firmware (that usually takes a lot time to get via official updates through kies). The latest firmware usually implies a lot f improvement in performance and battery life (yes, it is significant).
In the other hand you have AOSP ROMS (android open source project). This is the case of CM7 (cyangenMOD) and MIUI, and others like oxygen, insanity ii, etc... Here, the devs get rid of samsung firmware, and modify the open source gingerbread to run on a specific device (like samsung galaxy s2 in this case). This is the reason it may be buggy at first, because not everything is running as on samsung firmware.
ANyway, the latest CM7 nightly is working great for performance and battery life, much faster than samsung ROMs also. SOme problems anyway, like the camera which is worse than the samsung one, FM radio not working. There are a lot of things that are way better in CM7 and a lot of things that are worse. But with the latest nightlies the bugs are minor and you can use your device for daily use withouth problems.
I personally was using CM7 for some time and yesterday I switched to checkROM revolution (xda thread) which is samsung firmware XXKI4. I', constantly changing since I miss the camera app and polaris office alot (polaris office as a samsung app can't run on CM7).
Cyanogenmod is not buggy!
Just use checkROM like the rest of us...
I can suggest you to read here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1288850. Great team working on that rom.

Flashing a custom ROM makes sense, if you want to optimize the performance of your phone => flash a custom ROM specialized for better performance.
And if you want more battery life, flash a custom ROM specialized for a longer battery life.
If you feel fine with the official firmware, stick to a stock ROM.
That's what I am doing in the moment.
For me, the latest stock ROM is a good compromise / balance between performance and battery life.
But it's up to you ... feel free to try other ROMs.
if you have to ask the question then no, you probably shouldnt

I have been running senseless for a while now and it has been my daily driver. I had no problems with it, other than the horrible battery life.. I was running synergy but I uninstalled because of the random reboots I was having. Which ROM/kernel combo is running the best for you? Plus, I'm getting tired of the aosp/sense feel.. I need some excitement like MIUI, but I'm not too sure on how many bugs it has. I've seen that the only bug is 4g? Correct me if I'm wrong!

I'm currently on the stock ROM and seem to great pretty good battery life. I rarely have to charge my phone during the day, but also I'm not a very *heavy* cell phone user.
As far as MIUI and other AOSP based ROMs are concerned, not only will they not support 4G (WiMAX) but they also will not support the full range of 3D features at this point in time.
I've heard some developers are both working on WiMAX and 3D for AOSP but haven't seen too many detailed updates. If you rely on either of these features, AOSP will not work well. But if you can live without these two features, it would definitely be worth the 5-10 minutes to backup and flash the new ROM gaining personal experience.
If you're interested in using another ROM, I'd suggest backing up the current ROM and flashing over to the new ROM. Once you've done this a few times, it becomes very easy and in my opinion, this is best way to evaluate the ROM for yourself! Ultimately, doesn't matter what other people say if you're not happy!
Hope that helps!
Hello,
I've rooted my XTZ and unlocked the bootloader. I've used TA-Backup to backup my DRM Keys. I'm on the 4.1.2 stock ROM still. I love the tablet interface of this ROM, so I have decided not to upgrade it yet. Based on this, I had a few questions about the custom ROMs I've seen there and what benefit I have in updating at all, or perhaps the cons.
-
Are there any custom ROMs that use or have the tablet UI? They don't have to be based on stock ROMs.
Are there any ROMs that have a working IR Blaster?
Can I use any Sony apps in these custom ROMs and if so, where do I get them? I thoughtI saw them in the Apps and Themes forum.
Is there any reason I really need to go to a different ROM than 4.1.2? Speed benefits? Better battery life? Video performance?
What are the main reasons not to use a custom ROM?
Thank you for any help you can provide.

If you are happy with the ROM usability and performance I see no reason to meddle with the ROM as it is. Personally I kmow what you mean, even with all the stock Sony apps it is quite a quick runner. I never had issues of lag or slowness. Whatever OEM bloatware is added is honestly not very much bloated, at lewst no comparison to a few years ago when basically your only way to get a lag and nagfree device was switching to a custom ROM. Also many features thought up by the dev community have in some way or another been adopted by the OEMs over time.
Might also be a matter of habit and perception. You see so many threads about this or that ROM develpment, like Cyanogenmod immediately after market release. This also made me try it once and I really disliked. And went back to stock. So, the scramble for custom ROMs for many people is NOT to avoid the crappy unusable stock ROM but rather the fact that they already have grown used to say vanilla Android or CyanMod. And I can totally understand them, I have been buying HTC phones for many years because I was so happy with Sense. To each his own and if you are happy, great.

4. I would take advantage of the official Sony upgrades unless there is something in 4.2.2 you totally hate. Sony has announced to upgrade at least through 4.3 and 4.4 and I will gladly check their stock updates out when they come. Speed benefits might exist, but I think on the negligible side... Maybe measurable with a benchmark but unnoticeable in normsl use. Battery life might be a tad bit better if less stuff runs in tne background, but if some Sony apps or whatnot bother you, much can be turned off under Settings/Apps and whats resilient can be disabled with TiBackup freeze mode. Ask if you need more detailed instructions. I have dumped all the Facebook / Twitter stuff and then some, and while it still is on the tsblet snd in the ROM it is just deactivated and takes no runtime resources.
Thank you, Walter_White. That information was exactly what I was looking for. I'm very satisfied with the performance and layout of 4.1.2. I don't much care for the change they made to the tablet UI in 4.2 so I'll likely wait until 4.3 is released and just upgrade then. My bootloader is unlocked though, so I guess I'll have to use the Sony PC Companion to upgrade and then lose root, unless someone figures that out beforehand.
If someone made an update for a custom ROM that had all my Sony applications and IR functionality, with the tablet UI, I would try it though. I'll also try finding the apps that could cause performance issues like you mentioned.
Again, thanks for this help.
My friend's got SGS2 and he's low on money to buy a new phone at the time.
I myself owned sgs2, but several years ago, i.e. not tracking sgs2 threads now.
He's on stock now, but it's barely working, memory is over9000 full, ram's eaten by everything that can eat it.
I know I could just clear the stock, but it's kinda boring, I saw there are already Lollipop ROMs for sgs2 that seems to be working just fine (like Resurrection), but I'd like someone else's opinion.
Question is to those who still own and use sgs2 as a daily driver, what ROM should I install for him?
He's retarded in terms of everything related to technology, so he needs something that would work rock steady and stable, without bugs and errors, i.e. no beta\alpha builds.
I need to flash him some stable ROM, configure it and forget about it.
Advice needed, will be much appreciated, very thanks, wow!

OK, there are heaps of options out there.....
If he uses a lot of apps I would steer clear of lollipop roms for now as the os uses a lot of memory at present and they haven't quite got to the "rock steady, no bugs" stage just yet. You could try a minimalist rom like neatrom or slimsaber on kitkat, they are very good for performance and battery life. Ressurection remix 5.1.5 kitkat is also very good, a slightly older version of kitkat but based on cyanogenmod, so has themes and other stuff. Even older jellybean roms such as cm10 or vanilla rootbox are also highly recommended.
I'm currently using slimsaber by @fusionjack with dorimanx 10.44v008 kernel by @cybernetus as my daily driver at the moment and it would definately tick all your boxes
