Does this happen when you show the 3d to someone? - HTC EVO 3D

Every single time I show the 3d to someone they keep turning it to the left and right thinking it's like those 80's baseball cards. I tell them just to hold it still but then they start the repetitive tilting for no reason. Anyone else always get this?
I'm not mad but think it's hilarious. Just look at the screen. How hard is that?

Every. Single. Time.

Well every person has different peripheral vision so they have to angle it left and right until the two images become one. I actually tell people to do that. Otherwise some just see two images. Also aligning the 3D image for yourself will screw it up for others. Not everyone sees the same.

happens to me all the time

Yes. People are stupid.

I thought I was the only one..lol..i find it annoying, but yes every single person I show does it

You are quite correct. People have different peripheral vision and different dominant eye. However, most people angle the device +/- 30 degrees while the actual angle needed for optimal 3D effect is closer to 5 degrees. What I've noticed is that the distance of the device to the eyes is a much bigger factor in the 3D effect.

You have to admit, flipping it back and forth is a cool effect too! Eventually I'll actually be able to see the 3d effect. Right now, the flippy stuff is all I see, semi-superimposed images.
Yes, you eyes have a ton to do with whether you can see the 3d or not. 2 months ago I had major eye surgery to repair a torn retina, therefore my eyes do NOT focus together. (I'll be getting a contact to correct this soon) Then I'll be able to see if the 3d is "worth" it.

Oh ya I mean it needs angled just a tiny bit left and right.

i have had people do the same thing.. so now i tell every person i hand it to, just to look at it straight on and relax their eyes, like they are looking at one of those old school 3d pictures.. i havent had a single person do it since i started telling them that..and i agree the distance place a factor in the image..

Zone had it right. It's what you did when you first got the phone. Don't lie, you had to adjust it to find your sweet spot. The only thing I hate is when people look at it for less than 5 seconds and just give up on it and say that they cant handle it. Now I do understand that too, and I probably have some of the worst eyes on this forum, but it just bugs me, not really that bad though because I like the 3D.

Yes I understand aligning the image. And I do explain that. I'm talking about them trying to view the image like it's on a see saw(that's why I brought up the 1980's baseball cards).
I even had one person say to me "Wow I bet with 3D glasses these photos would be crazy!" (while continuously tilting the phone...).

I used to love Sportflics!

first they ask, is it all in 3d?
sent from a 3d fone

One of my friends felt an overpowering urge to scratch the screen with his nail to get that zipper sound (he didn't do it though).

I always start it, make sure it is in 3D and then say you have to hold it so you get the angle. You'll know when it's working. Then I let them figure it out.
My favorites are the ones who flip the entire phone over because they think it's like 5 inches thick because of the depth of the 3D

So, Now that YOU have the EVO 3D, How is the...

How do you like the 3D Functionality of the phone? Obviously, if you don't have the phone, or have only gotten to be hands on for a few minutes, you can't really provide much input in regards to it. I know some claim it's a gimmick, or some other BS, but that just goes to show they've already made up their mind without actually truly using it.
I had a 65" 3D DLP TV and learned there were really 2 types of people, those who could see it and had no vision issues and liked it, and those whose eye sight needed improving and couldn't watch but briefly.
So now that you own the phone, what are your thoughts?

Once you get used to it in terms of angle and distance it is very very good. Much better than the 3DS. It is not the main reason why I bought the phone but it is definitely a very fun addition to have. Looks great in my opinion.

+1 3d quality is amazing. Especially because of the qhd display. I did not expect the pictures to look soo damn good. There's so much depth!
I think its amazing. At first I didn't understand how to use it as I have mild monovision but after raining my eyes with the help of my optometrist I can se it now. It's trippy as hell. It's not like the movies where things jump out at you. Its like looking out a window and seeing the world.

I watched the Masters 2010 last year in 3D on the 65", and though I'm not much of a golf fan, the viewing experience made you feel like you were there. I kept wanting to reach out and move the people who were in front of the green out of the way.
I expect 95%+ of ACTUAL EVO 3D owners to state it's as expected, or better, though I do expect most people to have expectations exceeded. 3D is a cool feature. I didn't fully appreciate it until my entire Call of Duty 4 play-through was entirely on my 3D setup. Some of the missions on that game in 3D were awesome. Doing the snowy forest mission in particular was intense......in one word, definitely intense!
Of course sitting 6ft away from a 65" screen in 1080p 3D helped quite a bit. It pretty much filled my vision to the point where a turn of the head was needed to really see something at the edges of the screen. I went back through some of the missions while in 2D, and it wasn't anywhere near being the 3D experience. The difference is best equated to just watching the scenes from "Soaring" @ Disney World on a large TV, more so than being suspended on a device that puts you inside of a parabolic screen with the motion effects, blowing wind, and the scent device all working in 'full sensory harmony'. LOL
Of course, games like portal, Battle Field, and any other 3D game were badass too. The milk drop plugin for winamp has some awesome visuals as well. It will be interesting to see what 3D games turn out to be on the EVO 3D. Of course, it's not the same thing as a large 3D screen, it will certainly be more entertaining that just a typical 2D cell screen.
Occasionally 3D doesn't kick in when viewing 3d content. It's pretty rare but it does happen.
Watched five minutes of The Green Hornet in 2D; rebooted and it came on in 3D.
The phone also insists on converting 3D to 2D when sharing content so if you're planning a 3D flikr photostream or anything similar you'll have to find another way to create it.
What I'd really like to see is google earth in 3d. My virtual visits to Mount Everest would be so much more thrilling if google could pull that off.
I watched every review out there before i got mine and the expectations i had set from those reviews have been surpassed. Great stuff.

Well you have to look at it more like the fact that one pretty much knows what they're getting when they buy the phone.....which is actually $500, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't want it, but bought it anyway. And if you did find someone like that, I'm not sure how much credibility one could lend them given the fact that they impulsively bought something they knew they didn't want. If that's the case, they're probably insane and thought it would turn into a unicorn, so they could ride rainbows.

I know man, such a let down. I was hoping it'd turn into a Jet fighter using Transformers Cube technology. Turns out it's just a damn cell phone w/ 3D capability.
I love it personally. I didn't think I would, I was in the 'gimmik' column. Now I think i would buy another 3d phone. I bought spiderman and asphalt 3d (broken). Greenhornet was cool in 3d, sukie movie tho.

If mine doesn't have Halle Berry's number pre programed in the phone I'm turning it back in
So I was on the wait list, went in early, but there was only 1 other person in there. I figured I would take a look at it first before throwing down $550 as my upgrade isn't available for 3 months. I had the full intention of paying the full amount, as long as it met my expectations. I use an Epic 4G right now just as a reference to what I'm used to.
Just as a preface, I have better than 20/20 vision, and no issues seeing very small objects, details, and can focus on stereograms pretty easily, so I didn't expect too much of an issue from new screen.
I went over to the store and checked it out, the 3D is there, but its for those not familiar with the type of 3D, its more like a blurry 2D image until the stereogram effect kicks in (like when you stare at a patten and the 3d image drops). I did find the objects with a larger 'depth' are better seen by adjusting the distance of your eyes to the phone. You will notice the foreground objects become much more clearer with the backdrop having some of the double effect.
I did notice watching the Green Hornet that flashes / smaller details tended to double up, while the rest of the video was in 3D. Sometimes it would appear to change from 2D to 3D which was a bit distracting. Images seemed to be worse than the video feeds, and if you backed up about 3 feet from the phone, you could see 2-3 zones, much like a hologram when you shift it left to right, except you did not need to move to see the effect.
The phone itself felt snappy, but not much more than my Epic. Its early, so I expected it. I did some on screen keyboard texting just to see how it felt. It was decent, but tended to kick in the swype motions when I sped up which became typos.
Its not a bad phone, but for me, I wound up not purchasing it as the gimmick of the 3D wasn't strong enough to justify the full price, and with the motorola coming out at the end of the month with a better camera, and comparable specs (you can debate the Tegra 2 vs the 220/snap dual anywhere), it just didn't make sense for me.
I will let you know in an hour once I have time to play with the thing. On it's way now. Got a friend grabbing it from Best Buy right now.

People are confusing what type of vision issues present issues. It's not really at what distance you can see, though that can be an issue, it's more about eye dominance and other similar issues. If both of your eyes do not truly operate within fairly tight tolerances of each other, you will not enjoy it most likely.
I also prefaced the post itself to the actual owners, regardless if you were going to purchase it or not. Playing with something for 10 minutes isn't the same as owning it, regardless if you think you got the feel for it. One really needs to have it for hours, not minutes, before you actually get a feel for it. I'm willing to bet that no one has actually sat there playing with it for an hour while standing at the kiosk with 10 other people trying to get their hands on it. This is echoed by others who state, about THIS phone, that it was hours, not minutes, that the true feel was had.
I have a good friend, swore his eyes were perfect. Said he had 20/15....blah blah blah. He absolutely did nothing but knock 3D TVs....mine in particular. Funny enough it was originally, he didn't like it, it was a gimmick. Then it turned into 'well it gives me a headache'. 6 weeks later after he went to the eye doctor, he had himself a new regular item.....prescription glasses. Everyone else, unless they openly admitted vision issues, loved the 3D. I witnessed it over the course of 2 years. Some people are in denial about their eyes....because "it's not their eyes" ..... excuse me while I roll mine LMAO

Right, but it is also a forum of fanboys who have been biased by many subpar reviews and have been aniticpating to not like the phone and be underwhelmed. I think the general consensus is that the pro reviewers are either full of sh..t or are someone's payroll. I for one was averse to the idea of 3D but have been absolutely blown away by the quality and its useful implimentation. This is hands-down the best phone available right now..
It plays hell with my eyes, but I will get used to it.

No, I'm not happy to see you, that's a Shooter in my pocket.

Is it just me or is the 3d easier to se ethan reviewed

OK, maybe i have bad eyes, and according to the optometrist i do Anyway, point being, i seem to have absolutely no trouble seeing the 3d effect and i can see it from, not a wide angle range, but i dont have to be in the "magical" spot. Even all the photos and videos i took look great. Far better than the ones that came on the phone as samples. Lastly, the 3d content on youtube was awesome and very easily viewed to me. I am one to get motion sick easily and for some reason, i have no issues with this device. Like i said, maybe iim the exception, but i'm 110% satisfied with the device and the "gimmic" 3d
Yeah I think the 3d mode is pretty good. All though at extreme angles it will mess with your eyes.
I agree, 3d is very easy to see for me. It looks amazing too
I thought the same thing.
I played with a ds3d and hated it. Knowing that this phone had similar tech made me question its quality and ease on my eyes.
Well i can say now that the 3d is very good! Just got done watching green Hornet 3d and my eyes feel fine. I did fine myself loosing the 3d at times but I think that's cause I was looking at it for so long.
Pictures are a little harder to tune in and are harsher on the eyes, but the 3d affect is amazing! This phone is definitely a win in my book.

or maybe its just cause I think that movie stinks

Agreed, Worst Seth Rogan film ever. Hurts my eyes too.
Now the 3D effect, is bad ass! Yes you have to have it at the correct angle but with a Kickstand case, no problemo.
Last time I got my eyes checked, about 3 years ago, I had 20/15 vision so I would say that my sight is pretty good. The 3D effect is good but I find, at least for me, that the window is extremely narrow. It really has to be in the prefect position, otherwise it's nauseating.
I find it amazing. U just have to hold it still

I must admit the 3D is much better than I expected, especially after reading the early reviews. I'm fortunate in that I haven't had the eye fatigue or headaches reported by some. But as far as the 3D effect it is very good, even the pictures I've taken; and practice makes perfect. As mentioned above, holding the phone still in important.
The YouTube videos are awesome. I upgraded from the 4G to the 3D for the new processor and Sense 3.0; 3D was really not much of interest yet that is all I've been playing with since I got the phone yesterday.
At a price of $199 after rebates, why would anyone in there right mind complain about a feature you do not have to use anyway. It is amazing that this thing has 3d along with all of it's other top specs of any device and still came in at the price point it did.
The only thing they might have done different if they did not add the 3d in would have been to up the camera to 8mp but even then, it would probably be the same camera we have now but just shoot larger pictures so who cares.
I also bet all the people who screamed gimmick are starring at there phone right now trying to find anything in 3d to view.......
Although right now, I am starring at my phone fighting with myself if I should push the button to upgrade my software or wait to see if they root the non-updated software!
Anyway, 3d is a win on this device! Don't know how much better they could have made it and cannot understand how any reviewer can complain about the way it was implemented.....

Headaches or eye strain from 3D?

I watched the entire Green Hornet movie in 3D last night and I experienced no eye strain or headaches at all. I never took a break to even pause it: just watched it all the way through. In fact, about 10 minutes into the movie my eyes adjusted to the whole 3D thing and it seemed perfectly natural to watch it that way: not a gimmick. I really enjoyed it and the 3D effect is nearly as good as the plasma/LCD 3D TV's with the active shutter glasses.
Only thing that felt a little strain is my neck because I watched the whole thing while lying on my stomach in the bed, pillow under my chin, with the phone propped up against the headboard. Man I wish they hadn't deleted the kickstand on this phone because I really like the gel case I'm using: don't want to buy a case with a kickstand.
So I'm just curious, am I the only one who has no problem with the 3D (no eye strain)? Are others having problems?
Mike
Just curious...how far away from your face did you prop your 3vo? Do you wear glasses? If so, are you nearsighted, farsighted and do your glasses correct for astigmatism?
Thanks.

I guess 3d isn't for some people. I sat at the sprint store and watched a bunch of youtube videos and had no problems with headaches or eye strain.
I have a Sony Bravia 55” 3DTV with about 10 movies on Blu Ray in 3D (one of them being The Green Hornet) and have never had any problems having my eyes adjust or with headaches from the 3D. In fact I don’t think I’ve even had a headache period in the past 10 years or so, if not longer. I also have an HP Envy 3D Laptop. I’m extremely nearsighted and need to wear prescription glasses 24/7. I don’t have any problems with the Evo 3D either. I love 3D technology, it’s definitely no gimmick.
No headaches for me with 3D. I watched Green Hornet without issues.

But I'm guessing the TV and laptop still require glasses right? If so that would be why, it doesn't put the same strain on your eyes as no glasses 3d.

25 with 20/20 doubt thats the issue.
It's not how well you perceive objects at a given distance. So if you're 20/20 20/15, that's not the issue. The issue stems from one eye being more dominant than the other. There are several test online that will help you determine where the issue is.
Nah except for that ridiculous Spiderman game I've been good to go. I've been watching downloaded movies all day without a problem. My gf can't look at the screen for more than 30 seconds without looking like she has an aneurism though so I guess it's kind of subjective. Hopefully you'll get used to it soon enough

The phone was about 10-12 inches from my face. I don't wear glasses but I do have slight astigmatism that I have glasses for but I rarely wear them. The glasses make things sharper but they're just not worth wearing as the difference isn't huge. I'm 44 (thanks to those of you who thought I was "young").

Well I'm probably older than most in here and I am good to go now. I must admit the first night with the phone watching some of those YouTube vids my eyes were goofy as hell! Yesterday was better. Today...well, it just looks natural. I don't think it's an age thing, lol. Definitely needs a kick-stand, they screwed the pooch on that one!

Nearsighted with astigmatism and wear contacts. No issues here.
For me, it seems that the switching between 2D and 3D is what gives me a headache. Watching the Green Hornet 3D doesn't give me any eye strains. But when I go through the included 3D pictures, I get strains from the constant switching between 2D and 3D.
I can't see it
Don't own the Evo yet, but after viewing a friend's unit I discovered that I ~can't~ see any 3d effect at all, either in the Green Hornet, or in photo view/camera mode (and yes it was in 3d). All I can see is two separate images that flip back and forth like a hologram when I tilt the phone. Tried every distance between 8" and full arm's length (I'm far-sighted so 8" i can't focus).. I don't know whether my eyes are the wrong distance apart or if its because I'm severely right-eye dominant... Sad day because I was planning to buy this phone, but the screen drives me totally nutz in 3d and gives me a headache in normal/2d mode too.

LOL some folks that have a eye problem such as they are far sited or have to use one eye to read and the other to drive don't know what the condition is called can't ever see 3D no depth perception.
No issues here, nearsighted and wear contacts. I've always loved those images that you have to really look at to see though, so maybe that makes a difference

Lololol ...totally done that a million times by now. The girlfriend won't even look at the screen anymore. some people have gone so far as to hand it back the instant they see the screen like its cursed or something.
This guy at work just started yelling and nearly fell over...

lol.. ahh gramps... thinking every new tech toy is possessed...
Videos are easier for noobs, pics take learning.. I always focus on background images and not foreground first

i keep having to tell people to hold it still and just look at it. you would think it is a hot potatoe when people get it in there hands. twisting it and teetering it all different directions. all u have to do is hold it still and let your eyes focus.
it is kinda like those puzzles that popped out at you when they were popular back in the day. once u stopped trying to look at it so hard it just all the sudden would appear

glad some people like it. The 3D I see on my phone is really out of focus and gives me a headache. My eyes take a long time to adjust back to real life after I have been looking at my phone for a minute too

I had some issues at first too. I figured out I was doing a lot of things wrong.
First, Don't hold it too close, about a foot/foot and a half is good. Six inches is kinda weird looking.
Second, I kept reading move the screen back and forth till it pops, this is half right. You need to move it slowly and stop when it looks alright then blink a few times if you need too.
And in the gallery when looking at pics wait a second before you try to move it. Once you find a sweet spot if you keep the phone steady if should stay alright.
This phone really should of had a tutorial for using the screen, with like simple shapes and stuff like that.
The trick about 3D I found is that don't watch those cheaply made clips...make sure you watch the high quality one, I found one clip on Youtube that is a show-off type of clip for me to my friends. Search for "GoPro 3D: Highlight Reel 2011" is the name of it. Also, when watching 3D content, make sure you are in 4G speed because 3D requires high bandwidth to carry through.
Showed the above youtube clip to my coworkers and one of them said "iPhone 4 sucks!" and he's a Mac lover. lol
I know i just love taking pictures of myself in 3d for my bf

Yeah see, I thought that this kind of phone would revolutionize sexting!
I've seen some videos that are converted wrong, in most online videos and all the vids and pics the 3d takes I hold the phone with the top/left side slightly further away than the right, i have seen a video that it looked weird until i held it with the bottom/right side farther away. Check it out

OK, dumb question: Why don't 3D vids on youtube work for me anymore? I bookmarked a few to show friends, but when I play them now, it's as if I'm viewing it on a computer or a non-3D phone. Clearly, I've somehow selected something on youtube that makes it not work anymore. Can anyone help an idiot figure out what he did???
NM, figured it out. Apparently, you gotta use the youtube app, not the browser. Carry on.....

3D Left/Right separation test (pic)

I'd be interested in what other see when you put the attached on your phone and view it. Just drop the mpo file on the sd card under DCIM\100MEDIA and then view it via the gallery. Turn the phone landscape with the capacitive buttons on the right. When you hold the phone as you would to view any 3D image, you should be able to close one eye at a time and see two different images. If the phone has perfect separation, you'd see the word LEFT with only your left eye open and RIGHT with only the right eye open. But inevitably, you'll probably be able to see a faint ghost of the "wrong" word too ("LEFT" in the right eye or "RIGHT" in the left eye).
How much crosstalk do you see? I see a faint ghost of the "wrong" word indicating there is some crosstalk or ghosting but it's really pretty good separation. The ghosting on mine is pretty faint but I can still see the wrong (ghosted) word in each eye. The interesting thing is, on my phone, the amount of ghosting varies. On mine, the "T" in "RIGHT" is the darkest/worst.
I'm just wondering how much variation there is in our screens and if some are better than others. Be sure to close one eye at a time and fine tune the angle of the phone so you can get the best angle with the minimum possible ghosting.
Mike
Worked for me. I don't see the opposite with either eye closed. Pretty cool how that works. No ghosting at all.

Hmm. Ended up being pretty easy to take a picture of what I see through my left eye. Just use a camera and move to the left of center while looking through the viewfinder until the ghosted word is as dim as possible and take a picture. This is what mine looks like.
Mike
I Also don't see the opposite with either eye closed. Is cool indeed but wouldn't it just matter how your holding your phone ? If i slightly tilt it with one eye closed then i start to see the opposite word.

The key is to tilt the phone back and forth while closing one eye at a time so that you get the minimum amount of ghosting at one particular tilt: that's the best you'll be able to do with a real 3D image. Distance from your eyes also does make a difference so you kinda have to play with it.

Oh Lord. I hope this thread doesn't end up spawning another group of returns/exchanges. I just tested this on my wife's 3vo. Hers has a crooked screen and it doesn't show a trace of ghosting under the exact same conditions and brightness! Mine (with a straight screen) shows the ghosting problem. Not only that, hers keeps good separation through a much wider range of angles! Mine fluctuates a lot and it is VERY picky WRT angle. Completely different than hers.
One reason I tried this is that I've always felt that my first 3vo, one with a crooked screen, had better 3D depth and my new one with the straight screen just didn't have the same depth. Now I know why. I guess with these screens you either get a crooked screen or bad 3D. Wonder if there are any out there that have both a straight screen and good 3D? Both phones are HT16 serial numbers and 0002 hardware so they should have the same screen, right? If so, there seems to be some variation in how well the 3D works on these screens.
Mike
I guess I need to change my name. From this point forward you shall all refer to me as Ima. Ima Weetodd.
I looked through the 3D samples and the one with the river, rocks, and the mountains in the background looked especially bad. You could see ghosts of the rocks on either side and it really ruined the 3D effect. The Garfield 3D trailer from YouTube looked horrible too: hard to even resolve a single image. Visions of me going back to the Sprint store for a second exchange started to enter my mind. Until...
Guess what? I never would have expected this! I cleaned my screen thoroughly and NO ghosting at all now!!! It didn't even look dirty but apparently a thin film of finger grease is all that was needed to cause the ghosting. Apparently there was just enough refraction to cause a decent portion of the wrong side to get through to each eye. I repeated the separation test and looked at the pics/videos again with a clean screen: zero ghosting. Just to be sure I wasn't insane or switching the screen off/on wasn't what caused it, I actually rubbed my hands all over my face and then over the screen until I could see a faint film. I'm not a particularly greasy dude but that's all it tool: ghosts galore came back.
I guess if nothing else, I've learned a dirty screen REALLY affects 3D and if anyone has any question about whether or not their 3D is working properly, the image attached to the OP should serve us well.
Mike
I'm returning mine now I see ghosting
J/k . mine has absolutely no ghosting at all, the screen Has a slight tilt and its horribly dirty right now.
Funny I had at 3d with a strait screen that I return , and I always felt the 3d effect was better on it

Wow, this is pretty awesome.
Some ghosting for me, not a big deal though i guess

Something else I noticed. This is proof positive that the phone does support 3D in portrait mode. Bring up the image in portrait and look at it. It is VERY sensitive to angle and there is a little ghosting but at just the right angle, it does work. Holding the phone portrait, only "LEFT" shows to the left eye and "RIGHT" shows to the right eye. If you are off even a fraction of a degree though, you start seeing the words appear in various primary colors as you tilt the phone. At just the right angle (face-on), it does appear to fully support 3D in portrait.
Mike
Have you tried using the wand icon to correct the issue? Mine works perfectly although I do feel I need to hold it with the right side of phone slightly closer to my face rather than straight on.

The "Adjust 3D alignment" feature adjusts how far apart the two frames appear via shifting the frames in/out a certain number of pixels. That will have no affect on ghosting: ghosting/crosstalk is an error in the alignment of the two parallax barriers on the screen. That gap/angle is not adjustable.

I've seen ghosting in some pics and was able to fix it buy using that feature. And sometimes in some media I can not get it to go away at all.
