[Q] Reading MSL - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been trying to read the MSL from a Verizon HTC Eris.
I followed all the directions here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=697487 ), but it gave me the same error as midnigh7 got, and restarting the phone didn't work. When I checked the box nearby, it did give me a 4 digit code.
So I tried using MSL reader, and that also failed.
I then tried putting in the terminal commands mentioned, and there was no entry containing "MSL"
I then recalled reading that verizon sometimes has all 0's.
So I 'called' ##PROGRAM# , and when it asked for a password, the previously mentioned 4 digit code was not correct, but 000000 was.
Is my MSL 000000 ?

Verizon apparently uses 000000 as a universal MSL for their devices.
SPC/MSL: Service Programing Code/Master Subsidy Lock- This is a 6 digit code used keep the average phone user from programing the phone. Some providers have codes that are specific to each phone based off of the ESN e.i. Sprint, USSC. Other providers use a universal code e.i. Verizon uses 000000, Cricket uses 333333.

Yes that's right all Verizon MSL codes are 000000

Mongoose, What does unlocking MSL allow one to do? What are the risks involved?
Thanks,

From my understanding, the MSL is a password of sorts needed to perform certain dialer code actions and such. I've never had occasion to do anything where I needed to use the MSL so I can't really say what all people use it for. I think one thing some Sprint customers use it for is to modify their phone to roam on Verizon.

VZW uses 000000 allways and exclusively, unless in the last few days they have started something else.

[Q] Unlock HTC Thunderbolt SIM

I understand that this has been posted several times but I feel my question is a different in the reason that this phone will be used in a lab environment only.
I've been digging for ways to unlock the thunderbolt and I've come across many websites claiming they can unlock with a SIM unlock code if given the IMEI.
Here is my situation. We have here in our lab a LTE network in the same frequency range acceptable to the HTC thunderbolt. We've seen the Thunderbolt try to attach but of course we fail because we can't use our own SIM with all the parameters to pass Authentication.
From what I've read on other HTC phones when you put in a new SIM I should get a screen asking for an unlock code. This never pops up we just get an invalid SIM error. So is there a manual way to get this screen to pop up? Are there any other ways anyone could think of to allow me to use my own SIM for our network? The phone is rooted if that helps at all.
Thanks!
Call Verizon - They can unlock it for free - just explain your going on vacation overseas only thing i can tell you...
your allowed 1 free unlock per device then if you decide on another device wait past 6 months so you have another
chance to unlock the next device you get...
Have you been able to unlock the SIM on the thunderbolt yet - have same config in lab and want to use alternate SIM card for testing
I'd be interested in knowing how this went too....
Right when I got my TB and before I rooted, I was messing around with the privacy settings and I locked the SIM to see if I liked that feature. Something happened and it kept asking me for the IMEI, even though all I had set was a PIN. I called Verizon, quickly got tier 2'd, and the woman there gave me the IMEI without any problems. So if all you need is the IMEI, then all you really need is a good story

hahahaha, sounds good!
So, am I right in saying that VZW is the only one with LTE right now? Pretty much makes SIM unlock worthless (for now) except for those of you who are lab testing and such?
I'm doing Lab work with an Interphase LTE testrig at the moment.
Anyone succeeded with this unlock yet?
Sorry for the very late feedback.
So unfortunately we've had no luck finding ways to unlock the TB. We put a few weeks worth of work into it, and decided we had higher priorities to work on.

The IMEI code can be obtained on any TB by just looking behind the battery. The way these unlock services work, as I understand, is they use your IMEI code to run through some algorithm that will give you an unlock code. A lot of phone vendors use these special algorithms to lock their phones and they take in the IMEI code as input.
Now we did try one of these services but when we put in our SIMs according to other sites I've seen the phone should ask us for an unlock code. This unlock code is what you get from either you're service provider or someone selling the service to unlock devices. Unfortunately we never see any screen to even attempt to input this code.
So that's where we are with this.. Maybe we'll look into it again in the future.
Verizon doesn't lock them. It will only ask for an unlock code if you first lock your SIM (menu/settings/security/set up sim card lock) You'll want to call VZW to get the PIN, you might want to ask for the PUK at the same time. They gave me both, no questions asked.

When I say "unlock" I mean unlock the phone to allow for multiple SIM card use of different carriers... And like I said in the first post, we have an LTE network here in our lab, that is completely compatible with the HTC phone. We see messages being exchanged between the phone and our network.
We need to be able to use our own SIMs so that we can pass all authentication necessary to attach to our network. Unfortunately the Thunderbolt gives a "invalid SIM" error when we pop in our own SIM. So verizon must have some kind of special sauce that needs to be broken.

Do your UICCs have both USIM and CSIM applications on them? The TB is a special case phone, since it uses both CDMA and LTE networks to communicate. It may also be looking for an ISIM app. Finally, unless you also have CDMA running in your lab, the phone may still not come up on the network.
Any updates on this?
HTC Thunderbolt SIM CARD issue
You know after dealing with over three people I have spoken with I have told them that I need talk, text, web, mms and apps the whole nine yards now, I am dealing with some real issues I am giving in and I need someone who can flash my phone or program it to something I really don't care what even if it's a new activation.
I am currently using PagePlus Cellular so if you know anyone out there please let me know, I am ready to do this ASAP!
If you can beat the price of $50 dollars I am willing to listen.
If you put in the SIM card from another provider, you will get a "SIM CARD UNRECOGNIZED" error on boot. To fix this, go to settings -> wireless and network -> mobile networks -> and APN settings. In the menu there should be a locked APN listing. To unlock it, simply press the menu key and choose to revert to default settings, and then refresh. It should now allow you to modify the APN settings. Just insert them with ones from the old phone that you pulled the SIM from, and reboot. I was able to switch this phone to T-Mobile no problem
So, your thunderbolt works fully with a t-mobile sim in it?
You can get the unlock code from My Verizon off their website.

The MSL is the key!!!

Im starting to believe the msl is the key to the domestic sim unlock i went into the Sprint store and asked for my MSL and she said "i cant disclose that info"
And i called and rep told me the same thing AND dont u find it weird that msl reader doesn't work on a rooted photon?? Worked on my evo and evo3d

Humm.. I don't know why people have such a hard time to get their MSL number.
All I had to do is chat with a customer service girl and all I said was
"I'm having trouble getting my data to work and I need to reset my data profile but I can't because I don't have the code to enter" (Don't mention MSL right away, maybe that will make things easier for you guys) ((MAYBE))
Then all she said "Yes Mr.***" Let me get your information and I will get right back at you with your code"
As easy as that!
I have my msl from Sprint and there is a method to get it now. the msl let's you reprogram for another cdma carrier.

MSL or SPC (Master Subsidy Lock or Subsidy Programming Code) is a six digit code carriers like to impose on phones to prevent them from being used on another carrier. Once the code is found, you can change it to a code of your choice and you can write information to the phone such as a new PRL to change carriers.
MSL or SPC doesn't necessarily lock the Sim slot. I believe on this phone the sim slot is locked in the radio iteself. Also one more thing. The MSL SPC on alot of phones is protected in memory. Most HTC's will give you the code .. but MOTO's are different.
There is a method to read the MSL SPC using Radiocomm. The MSL SPC is in HEX and will need to be converted. But once found you will be able to change it.
I was able to flash my bro's mopho to cricket wireless with everything working.
Just read this thread using RadioComm instead of MSL Reader which is for HTC phones. Especially the 3rd post in. You will get your MSL easy-peasy, no sweat, no hassles. Worked for me and most others on the thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20454992
The sim lock is at chip level dude just like how 4G is broken when you unlock (which is at radio level). Moto definitely didn't want anyone in their phones that's not supposed to be there. The reason the MSL reader doesn't work is because its for HTC phones only lol. Has something to do with the way bootloaders are locked. I really wish moto took care of the dev community man and just fully unlock these phones.
So no the MSL is not the key lol! Merry Christmas!
This is why I love working at Sprint. All I have to do is go into eticket and type the PTN, and the MSID (dec or hex), and then display MSL. I guess membership does have it's privileges... heh
On the Motorola triumph fro virgin mobile I got the msl out of the logcat. Use alogcat and make the phone ask for the msl then enter it wrong and check the logcat output. It shows the wrong code I used 000000 and right after it the right code it checks it against. 552455. That might work for you on the photon.

Really? Damn, that's hilariously bad coding (though we aren't complaining).
I just tried this on the photon. It doesn't work. However, I got my MSL by going to the official sprint store and just asking for it. Other people on this forum have also gotten it this way or by calling Sprint technical support.
Hmmmm... I love the Photon, and I am going to try tricking a eChat Rep... We'll see...
MSL for Motorola Photon 4G free and easy
I have seen a lot of different ways to get your MSL code for a Motorola Photon 4G, but there's one way that worked for me. I downloaded the MEID Converter app in the market or playstore. You simply enter your MEID or ESN number, and press the button to calculate. It then lists the date, the esn, then it displays your MSL. I hope this helps.
If you still have your original paperwork from when you bought and activated your phone, the msl code should be there. Otherwise, radiocomm works. (It did for me), or call customer service if all else fails.

[Q] Sprint Note 3 SPC 4.4.2

I have tried to get the Note 3 SPC code read in CDMA Workshop (Paid Version) , but it fails to read it. Any Ideas? I've been looking up on google haven't found a method on 4.4.2 or maybe there is something i'm missing in CDMA Workshop???
*Not all wireless carriers use the SPC code.
The SPC makes it possible for a consumer to purchase the phone anywhere, call up the provider’s toll-free number, and then activate the wireless phone from the directions given by the representative on the other end of the line. After the initial programming, the SPC is no longer valid. This method enables the initial field programming of the phone by the consumer, and now the wireless provider has the knowledge of the only working programming code for your phone for subsequent programming, which is the master subsidy lock.
Once the SPC has been used, the only working programming code for the phone is the MSL. This fact is important to note, because if the phone needs to be reprogrammed for any reason, the MSL must be used. These reasons may include a phone number change, a PRL update, or a firmware upgrade.
For example, if you need to change your phone number because you moved, or perhaps, you purchased the phone second-hand, the phone must be reprogrammed, and to do so requires knowledge of the MSL.
The MSL code is generated by an algorithm based upon the phone’s ESN and the specific carrier who originally sold the phone. Each carrier uses a different algorithm to create the MSL code. For example, one carrier would not be able to generate valid MSL codes for a different carrier’s cellular phone simply by plugging in the phone’s ESN into their algorithm.

Unlocking

So I realized the carrier I use my phones through (FreedomPop) automatically gives you your MSL code on the device page. Since I see MSL and Unlocking together a lot, I figured I'd buy a tmobile Sim and try to unlock it, but it said invalid Sim, and there was no box to put the code in. Is there a way to unlock it with this code? I tried the downgrading modem and using galaxytools to do the uicc unlock but it always failed. I am not a sprint customer, so am I SOL on getting my phone unlocked?
Anything?
