Copy files to external SD card via USB Mass storage mode .
Do you see the files in Windows Explorer .
Probably you are that impatient you have copied the files to a wrong place .

no... cant see nothing! (except on PC)

Copy the files back to your PC (if you need to) and reformat it, making sure you do it as FAT32. Then copy the files back.

use your SGS2 to format the sdcard, this should settle problems with filesystem, cluster size, ... then try again. make a backup of your files before you format!

same happend to my 32gb class 4 sdhc card abd after 2 days it become dead, now it is not working any more. May be your card has the same problem that mine had. I bought it from ebay and it was local china made card. I claimed my money and got it back.
may be this would help you, do not consider that your card is also going to die, i just told you what happened to mine.

actually i got my microSD from my previous device-Nokia E72
it is a SDHC so it should fit the FAT32 system..no?

It's best to format it if you're having issues, especially with something like files appearing/not appearing on different devices.
As suggested by d3l1 above, use the phone to format it. If you still have problems then there are better formatting apps for your PC.

if there are still problems he should test the card and see if it's dying, happens from time to time.

if you can open it in your pc then its not dead yet.. may sure you are opening the correct folder for external card. The folder is in sdcard\ externalSd or something like that

did you try another card? there are so many possibilities as to what may be the problem.

i can see the folder SDCARD/external_SD
but inside i can only see LOST.dir and .android_secure, nothing else! but i did put some music in it!

me 2
same here formated the sdcard in my pc put in my phone then transfered music.phone couldnt see any files so formated sdcard in phone this time but when hooked it up to the pc the files were still there even though they had been formated.lol not sure what to do next.

SD card won't mount

Hey guys, about a month ago i accidentally dropped my phone on my coffee table and it cracked my screen. I didn't notice any other damage. Now it won't read the SD card. It will try and mount it and then tell me I removed it or something. I'm running Cyanogen 2.3.3. Stable rom and I have a recent nandroid backup.
I would like to fix this without a restore, but I can restore if that'll fix it. I'm just hoping it's not a hardware problem.
As always, any and all (attempts to) help are greatly appreciated!
Are you using S2E or Darktremor apps2sd? (That wouldn't be the cause of the problem, but would change the way you'd troubleshoot it.)
I really don't know what either of those are. I use Titanium backup and the android app manager to move the apps.
k, just checking. I'd suggest trying with a different SD card if you have one to see if it works with that. If it does, then I'd try reformatting the original SD card to see if that gets it to work again. Just make sure you copy all the files off the SD card with a computer first, then copy them back after reformatting.
Okay it was my SD card. I've moved everything over to a 2GB card now. Problem is, I can't get anything to read my 8GB now. I tried formatting after I backed it up, but it failed during the format and now neither my computer nor my phone will read mount it. It's obviously corrupt. Is there any way to fix this? I can fit most of my stuff on my 2GB card, but I'd like to save the 8GB if possible...

Try this program: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/
It has revived an SD card for me in the past. Hope it works for you.
okay I got the SD formatter. I've inserted the 8GB card using a working micro-SD to SD adapter in my card reader and the program recognized the drive and shows the correct size (7.39 GB). When I try and actually format the card, though, it says that either the drive, or the card is not supported by it. :\
I figured updating the drivers for my card reader would fix this, but I have no idea where to find them...
Some thing you might try:
1) Make sure the lock switch isn't engaged on the microSD to SD adapter. I had to tape the lock switch in the off position on my adapter to keep it from switching into the on position when I plugged it into my card reader.
2) Try formatting another SD card to see if it works.
I don't think you're going to find any new drivers for something as simple as a card reader.

There are many variations of that model... Go here: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp?nav=Download and find your specific model, then download and install the card reader driver available/suitable for it.

Really frustrated... Major Problems with SD Card

So,
My SD card isn't recognized on the phone - saying it's unavailable, and my computer says it needs to be formatted.
I can't install any app, the phone just soft resets. So it's all due to my SD Card.
I can't format it because I have so much stuff on it - from pictures, to files, to everything. Anyone know how to fix it so I can at least get my stuff off it?
This is really not good if I have to format it...
I have no Idea how to help you, but what up bro didn't know you had the gs2 i remember you for the ole captivate forums lol.
You have to format it then use a recovery program.
My 2 suggestions, which I went through the same issue and got 95% of my stuff...
1. iCare Data
2. Recuva

What do you mean you can't format it? What stops you from doing so?
Can you first, xfer all your personal stuff to other place/space/computer/....., then format it and move those stuff back in when done?
Why can't you do that?

The reason why you can't transfer it is because he needs to format it so its properly read.
I think his uSD can't be read properly in his phone, he didn't say it can't be read in his computer.

If thats the case, then he should copy all existing data to his computer, format, then recopy everything back over...
But he did say in his OP that the computer said it needed to be formatted. So that tells me that his computer can see the card, but cant access it.
Use Recuva or testdisk (google is your friend).
testdisk works great for SD cards and USB devices. The issue will be that it will see the file, but not the filename, so it will numerically name them. small price to pay to get your info back from a would-be dead SD card..

Yea thats why I like iCaredata (find it how you want to) but it keeps folder structure and other things so its easier to track your files.
Maybe try mounting the SD in CWM? I used this when the SD contents wouldn't show after a bad flash.

Only problem I've ever encountered is the picture size isn't the same as the original. Always smaller.
Just used iCaredata and it worked like a champ.

[Q] MicroSD card appears almost empty

HI
I took the 32gb memory card out of my old HTC Desire HD and put it into my new S3.
Very strange because although the directory structure appears, the file explorer reports that every directory is empty - which they aren't.
The storage statistics correctly tells me that the memory card is almost full - so why won't it read the files?
I think that's the same thing as what happened to me today. No idea why it happened, but the SD contents showed up correctly after rebooting my phone.
Thanks.
Comforting to know that it isn't only me. However I rebooted the phone but no change.
Sounds like a formatting problem. You might have to copy the data off to a computer using a card reader or the old phone then reformat the card using the gs3 before putting your data back on the card.
Sent from my LG-P920 using xda premium
Yes, I think that must be the explanation. What a nuisance.
I'll try it and report back. Ta
Well it is very wierd.
I formatted the sdcard both on the PC and also in the phone.
Despite this, the file explorer still reports the file structure - which now no longer exists.
I've rebooted the phone. Makes no difference.
Phantom file structure reported on the phones file explorer - even though the available storage size is correct in the storage stats.
Does the computer also report the phantom file system?
This seems really strange indeed.
Have you tried writing new files to the card on the gs3 then see if they show up in the computer?
Sent from my LG-P920 using xda premium
No. The computer shows correctly.
But now - even more wierd, I downloaded a lot of files to the phone's internal memory.
Although the SDcard is empty, the phone's file explorere now shows the SDcard as containing the files.
My head is spinning.
I wonder if this is at all related to my issue (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1698672). I also experienced a phantom file structure, but it only affected a few hundred picture and music files (out of several thousand).
Thanks for this suggestion.
I don't think that the issue is the same. It was never formated exFAT and also there is no trace of the files at all.
When the car is inserted back into the HTC there is no problem. When it is in the PC - no problem.
I have now tried with another card - 16gb. Same thing.
These are good quality cards which have been used for more than a year on other phones.
I'm starting from scratch today. I'm going to reformat the 16gb using a full format - FAT32 and see what happens.
It shouldn't neeed to be this hard
Just to reiterate:-
The really puzzling things are:-
The phone's faliure to see the files - but it sees the directory structure.
The phone sees a "virtual/phantom" directory structure after an in-phone formatting
The phone sees files on the card if they have been copied there from the internal memory.
have you tried another card with the same capacity? what about reformatting the card from the phone after backing up the contents?

Yup - done all of that. No difference
what ROM are you using? are you using a custom ROM?
No. Brand new received yesterday t-mobile s3
Is it possible that the internal memory and the sdcard are being spanned in some way so that to the file explorer they all appear as one?
In fact even my Profimail email application reports that the directories and files are on the sdcard when in fact they are now on the internal memory and the sdcard is newly formatted and empty
Are you sure that you try to access your sdcard via /mnt/extSdCard/ ?
Samsung points the folder /sdcard/ to the internal memory and not to your sd card, so please make sure this isn't the problem.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Ah - that sounds like a likely possibility.
Where can I find out more about this pelase.
Is there a way that I can point it at the physical card.
I really just want my phone to work in a way that I am used to and not in some wierd Samsung-controlled way
Yes, I can confirm that is what is happening.
It is really very ambiguous. ESfile explorer reports the directory structure on the external card but doesn't report the files. This is definitley a glitch which needs to be sorted out.
It also means that if you use windows file explorer to upload data directly on to the external card, it doesn't seem to be accessible to the phone.
Surely this can't be right

Hello there.
If you lost anything / something on your sd external you must do the following.
1. Put your sd card into a card reader.
2. Download File scavenger on your PC. http://www.quetek.com/prod02.htm
// You have 2 vers: free and paid. try the free one and see if it sees your lost files; and if is it positive you know what to do .
3. Scan your sdcard, with the Long scan.
4. Save your files.
Hope it helps.

[Q] [SOLVED] phone Does not mount/detect external SD card

Hi guys
I have searched for the answer to this one and it's now giving me a headache.
I put in a brand new sandisk 16 GB SD card. But now when I put ANY SD card in the phone fails to boot.
Looking through CWM it can't even mount the card there.. I have tried NTFS FAT32 (formatted on laptop) but still nothing. The SD CARD still works and is detected in my laptop. I have even tried the original SD CARD the phone was shipped with and nothing.
Even went back to stock ROM and although it booted, it still couldn't detect the SD card and the media process kept on crashing.
ANY ideas much appreciated!!!

maybe your sd slot is broken?
since as you stated:
- works on pc

did your phone fell?
water damage maybe?
did something happen that made you switch to a different sdcard?

SD Card won't mount - FIXED
I'm just trying to get the word out on the fix that worked for me. NONE of the fixes I have searched for have worked. On Cyanogenmod 10, I just could NOT get the SD Card to mount - External SD would mount, but not the internal SD (on HTC VIVID). Out of frustration, I erased the system and SD card from with in the OS Settings Menu (Setting>Backup & Reset>Factory Data Reset - including SD Erase). When I rebooted, I was going to reload a different ROM....but lo and behold...my SD Cards are both working correctly. Please note that no other Formatting worked (ie from the bootloader). One last note, to get the External SD to talk via USB to the PC, I have to put the unit into MTP mode as a Media Device instead of Mass USB Storage.

I agree - I tried many things including re-formatting / remove -> reinstall disk partition using Windows PC / Ubutntu (gparted), reinstalling the ROM / original firmware etc. None of these worked.
I put the card into different Android phones and tablets - by chance, one of them (a Galaxy Tab 2) managed to detect the card. I used this tablet to format the card (and all other cards which didn't work with the phone) - now they all work!
So, the only way is to find an Android device which can detect the "faulty" card and format it.

Don't seem to be broken hardware, because the fault can be repaired. It seems that Android doesn't agree with formatting / partition of some SD cards.
