Was curious if there are other NYC Atrix users out there and how you've been finding your service. I get terrible service in my office and coming from a blackberry on ATT that never happened before. I sit with below full bars pretty much constantly most of the places I am. Also, my speeds are pathetic, never seen above 1500kbps down speed test. Was curious if maybe something was up with my device itself...
anyone else out there have similar experiences, how are your speeds in NYC?

I'm sorry you're having those issues i'm in lower Manhattan and my service has never been better. However, take that with a grain of salt since i'm coming from an iphone 4. But my data sessions have yet to timeout like they used to on my iphone 4, no dropped calls...yet and reception is a little better. Even with 1 bar of service where my iphone wouldn't connect to 3G the atrix open pages really fast. I was on 42nd St on the west side last night and my gf iphone kept losing service and slow data speeds while my atrix was downloading and opening pages perfectly. My speed test have been getting better i have been able to hit 2500-3100kbps in lower Manhattan which is not too bad considering they haven't officially launched 4G in NYC, with the exception of the capped upload speeds which only get 200kbps.
I'm actually happy to hear you are getting better speeds then me. I'm in midtown east and cant see the service being any "worse" up here. Maybe it is the device...curious to see what others have to see
My voice calls are great, but I am also getting crappy speeds in Union Square area. I noticed that if I switch SpeedTest server to NJ, I get much better speed than NYC server lol
Same results as you Northern Queens , All of Nassau up to Huntington. I got the highest today in Port Washington. 1.8 down.
Calls Are fine like my pal just said.
I'm in mid to eastern long island and I'm getting around 1.5-2 meg down and never more then 400kbs up on the speedtest.net app. This is coming from my Aria on CM6.1 which was getting over 3 meg down and like 1.5-2.5 up on average. I'm hoping once at&t starts rolling some better speeds like they are promising things will get better. I had to admit, though. Other than when actually doing speed tests... i don't notice the difference. Pages and other things still load fast. So I can't really nit-pick the numbers when in all reality the difference isn't really noticable. As far as phone service goes, I've been loving the Atrix. I get about the same bars I use to with the Aria, which is more than I use to get with the iPhone 4 I had before it. Call quality on the Atrix is amazing, though. The phone speaker and speakerphone are both very clear and vibrant sounding.
Excellent question. I have been so pissed at my friends and clients with no reception on their iphones that I pretty much vowed never to go with at&t, until the atrix came out. Sounds so far that the atrix is working better than the iphone but can't wait to hear more from owners. Thanks for the NYC question.

I have had sub100 at school and at home. School = Queens, home = Nassau. Nassau has the worst speeds. With iPhone 3G it was faster (not with speed test, just opinion), idk why.
I am in lower manhattan (water st) and I cant seem to get better than 600KB on down and 200KB up.. Dunno whats wrong with it ( had 3 bars)
I live in NYC. My Motorola Atrix shows 3 or 4 bars and suddenly drops to 1 or no service for a second and goes back up to 3 or 4 bars.
I live in NYC and never had this problem with my Samsung Captivate. Most of the time the phone does not even show the full 5 bars, mostly 3 or 4 and occasionally 5.

Fascinate speedtest.net issue
I have a fascinate running 3.0/dl9 ie 2.2.1-when I run speedtest.net results are pretty crappy for northern VA, usually around 500-800kb. Anyone else getting terrible speeds? Is there places to check settings for this? My wife has a Droid x and she got about 2600 on a test last night three times. Seems like my fascinate is throttled. Any advice appreciated.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
The fascinate seems to have a ****ty antenna, my OG droid gets at least -10 dBm more than my fascinate no matter where it is at. Hope fully when they actually release froyo it has a better modem and gets better service(which I doubt). I also get really ****ty connections to mobile networks and even wifi networks, I can be 10 feet from the router and only get 2 bars for it. I am trying to see if I can add iwconfig and iwlist commands to the fascinate, but I am having little success with it. I am not too knowledgeable with android at this point.
Was your wifes wifi on? I rarely get over 1mbps
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
EVDO can't support more than about 1.5Mbps for a sustained transfer. The 2600 that your wife got would have dropped down if the test had run longer, at least it should have as that is more like a burst speed, which could be in the 3-4Mbps range. Your results seem completely normal.
I hit 1.7mbps on 3g yesterday in the los Angeles area
Sent from my SCH-I500
I believe that Verizon's EV-DO Rev. A network has a max burst rate of 3.1mbps. Sustained rate should be about 1/2 of this. I consistently get 1.5Mbps and I have a giant cell tower right outside my work (I get 4 bars even in the middle of the building).
speedtest
I'm topping out at about .14mb up and .29mb down with three bars on 3g... It's pretty consistently low, usually about .1 for both. I can barely stream a 2 minute youtube video half the time.
My Samsung Omnia was much, much faster- I could tether and stream Netflix with very little buffer time using it. With this, it's a laughable thought. Disappointing, and I haven't been able to find any suggestions for boosting it.

Installed the above config and it brought my test speed up to .70/.54. Much improved. I'd like to blame the rest of the slow speeds on living in a rural area, but it's not THAT rural (just outside Atlanta), and I have a friend who gets MUCH faster speeds on his Incredible.
Just curious... My speeds aren't what they should be. I can't even get through a HD video on YouTube without massive buffering.
I think total me and my wife used about 15-20GBs of data last month.
3G or LTE? As far as I know, they aren't legally allowed to throttle LTE.
Run a speed test. It should be about 3-5 mbits/sec if your throttled on lte.
A good lte speed is about 15-50

If you can, swap sim cards with someone who has lte and definitely hasn't been throttled.. Then run the test again

Ok, so ran some tests, speeds are ok. But downloading from the market and watching HD in the YouTube are not good. Market downloads crawl along and YouTube constantly buffer. Any ideas?
Sense 3.6 ROM...
I wonder. What might your signal strength be at the time you are trying to use data? I'm not talking about what it says in the signal strength indicator in the status bar but in the settings rather.
Got four bars..
First number is teetering in the mid to high 90s, second number stays a steady 8. I'm on a global ROM.
Your sppeds can depend on your area. I know where I live I can have 4 bars and be from 3 to 10 Mbps. Now if I go in to town I can get 15 to 20. Then if I go to my uncles place in the middle of no where I get 20 to 35. Just because you have 4g doesn't mean you are going to download at those speeds with play store. It depends on their servers and how congested their servers are. I have been on WiFi that had killer speeds and it still downloaded at the same speeds. Verizon doesn't throttle by your sim card but by tower location. If a tower get a lot of congestion they will cut the speeds of everyone so everyone can use the data. Once the congestion goes away they put the speeds back.
With that said I have heard people talk about when they check their account there is something on their account that means they are the top 5 percent and are throttled. I use from 50 to 75 gigs a month and never seen this throttling.

Absolutely what Jedi said. According to the signal strength I asked you to provide, everything seems in order. What I would do now if you are still concerned is just contact VZW about the issue and see if something may be going on in your area.
This happened to me before when I lived 30 miles out into the country, I had to contact VZW because my phone was getting slow speeds even though the signal seemed ok. They ran some tests and such and finally contacted me back informing me indeed a recent storm had caused the box on the nearest tower to be struck by lightning. They sent out crews and within a few hours my area was restored to full strength again. This may not be your case, but it might be worth it because VSW told me if I had not contacted them, they would not have known for a long time. Just a thought.
I'll have to call then. Just ran speed test, got 22mbp/s. Updated some apps. Download speed crawled. Turned ny home Wi-Fi on, speeds starting flying. Something is definitely wrong...
I don't know about you guys but I wouldn't use YouTube as a reliable test. YouTube has begun throttling video streaming especially during peak hours. I can't hardly stream an SD video around 6:00 anymore.

I apologize if this is a duplicate...only did a cursory seacrh, not a deep one. Only getting 2 bars now, so I'll hold off on a speed test. Still...I'm happy to see this.
Anyone else in the Boston area just notice this?
I'm getting 2G / Nothing in my house in Waltham.. which is why I rely on wifi calling.. which is why i'm not using 4.2.2
good to know we're getting close though.

It's interesting. I take a train from the northshore into Boston so I can see some areas have it and some don't. Where I live in Beverly does not. Salem, no, parts of Lynn, yes, part of Chelsea, yes. I work in downtown (in City Hall Plaza) however I keep my phone on WCDMA to lock into HSPA. However, after reading this I decided to switch back to Auto mode to see what kind of signal I would pick up. I live in Hyde Park. I just ran out to my local Shaws and picked up LTE! I did 3 speedtest and was able to pull down 10 megs and up 9 megs per sec. Very exciting. I'm simply looking forward to a more stable network with robust speeds. Locked in to WCDMA and I can down between 5-9 megs and up 3 megs in Quincy, Brockton. I'll be keeping my phone on Auto more often now. Personally, I find the network as a whole to be a mixed back. On average when my phone is locked to WCDMA, I'm averaging 2-3 megs down and 1 meg up. HD videos load just fine on YouTube...

I stand corrected: I get about 2 bars of 4G LTE here at home. Now, I only had two bars (didn't do a more exact, rigorous check. Hey, it's Saturday morning) of LTE, at most, during the speedtest, and it dropped down to one for have of the duration. Still, the results were promising even with the diminished throughput: about 10 down and 6.5 up. Not bad for a couple of bars! The trick is what's going to happen when everyone else figures it out.

I share the same concern, however I really just want a solid network with great coverage and solid speeds. I haven't had any real issues with T Mobile's network and since my HD2 days my experience has been good. I find their HSPA and plus network to be pretty good, I just wish I had better coverage throughout Mass. Every now and then a YouTube video (always in HD) will take around 10 seconds to load but for the majority of my experience, hiccups and stutters are far in between.
So, looking forward to this LTE network. Although it may not be the fastest, if I can have speeds consistently in the 5 meg range, I would be very happy. I am so sick and tired of my phone and my wife's GS4 on 2g from time to time which is why I keep mine locked in WCDMA mode.

Traveling through Boston to get to downtown... My route included parts of Hyde Park and Dorchester. I'm currently in my office which is on the 16th floor inside of City Hall Plaza and I'm picking up between 1 and 2 bars of LTE. A quick Speed Test (3 total) and my results are sporadic. My best score was 13/down and 11/up.
Excited to see a real effort on behalf of T Mobile.
I'm in downtown Boston at 60 State Street, and in my office on the 4th floor I'm getting an occasional 1 bar of 4G LTE but then it goes back to just 4G before I can test it out. That's unfortunate because their 4G in my office is painfully slow. (Unlike at home in Waltham where it's very, very fast.)
I'll see if I get a more reliable LTE signal when I head out to lunch later. Here's hoping they beef it up soon so I can start using it at work regularly!

Latest lte speed test from the greater boston area
Boom goes the dynamite.
i am in Everett, MA and get LTE according to my Galaxy S4 at least. According to the Tmobile data coverage map i am right on the border between excellent(best possible) and very strong(2nd best). Have tested my speeds quite a few times over the last 3 weeks and consistently my down is slower than my up, just tested again and get 10 down and 12 up according to ookla speedtest and about half of that (but still up being faster than down) with opensignal app(although i wouldn't trust tests with opensignal app since it reports my home wifi being 11/8 while ookla correctly shows 85/24) . My friend with Galaxy S3 swears he got almost 50 down while walking in downtown Boston once on LTE about a week ago, hope those speeds come to my neck of the woods @ some point. Any phone optimisation tricks to make LTE/4G bit faster? Would like to justify paying extra $20 for unlimited 4G/LTE data(and if i got over 25/x on average on it i would def. add unlimited option)

I don't know how much this will help you but there is a thread (can't find it right now, on my phone) that shows how to change your APN from the default settings to creating a new one that has less traffic epc.tmobile.com
Since I've changed this setting I've experienced greater LTE AND HSPA+, consistently. I too live in Boston and was actually in the Everett area yesterday and had excellent service down there.

thank you for this info. My default APN is indeed fast.x. I changed to epc.x according to these instructions by creating new APN set so can always switch between fast.x and epc.x and here are the preliminary results:
Tested with ookla app right before change and average out of 3 was 10/11 (Down/Up)
Right after the change(no reboot) and switch to epc.x APN set average 10/11 (exactly the same)
After restart and verifying thats still on new epc APN set - ookla has reported 17/10 (on the right track?? highest down before i ever got was 12)
Switched to back fast.x APN set and ookla reported 18/10 (WTF???)
Restart again and on both epc and fast ookla reported 6/8(even worse than before)
everything was done within 10 min window. Could i be too far from nearest LTE tower? Network Signal app shows the signal as LTE(on both fast.x and epc.x) and dBm of -93(although also shows 3/4 signal bars). Open Signal app shows LTE and dBm -75 and while better than NS app still quite bad. According to Open Signal cell tower map i am less than 1 block away from a nearest cell tower though and about 1.5 blocks away from another tower exactly on the other side.

Well, let us not forget that T-Mobile is still in "Roll out" phase when it comes to LTE. During this phase, we can't expect that the overall experience will always be the best. There will be time where depending on the towers upgrade status, network congestion, utilization and more you will experience slower speeds.
I say, don't judge the network because of one day of sub-par performance, give it some time, and you will notice the improvements.
