Easiest way to root is to use cf-root, full instructions in the thread
Match up the bit in bold to find out which kernel you need
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100|PKH1
If you want a newer stock rom try this thread, again to root you will want to use cf-root.
As far as a good custom rom combo, try ninph kernel and villanrom, links in my sig.

I just got a SGS2 and am hoping to root it but finding it very difficult...much harder to do compared to jailbreaking my iPhone any i am not that tech savvy so any help will be great.

Please if you could, give me a dumbed down version on how to do this.

Root has nothing to do with free apps that is available via the Android market .
Comes with the phone out of the box .
Neither root nor rom are involved .
That is presuming you do not mean illegal theftware/Warez phone apps ,such posts are banned on XDA .

You may just want to update to a newer stock rom, see the 2nd link in my post.
That is a very old rom, there has been quite a lot of performance improvements since then. Try KG6 or KH3.
If you want to go for a custom rom, see my sig for what I use ninph+VR is a stock based combo where as CM7 is a whole new and different rom, though it has limitations and may not be good enough for everyone at this point.
Rooting allows you to use root apps, terminal emulators, titanium backup, CWM recovery (comes with the kernel) which allows full device backups.
Rooting is not the same as jailbreaking, you can sideload apps without rooting.

You can sideload any apps, there are also free apps in the market, and there are also loads of apps on xda if you look around.
Try the getjar store
Or appbrains
Android doesnt have the same limitations as iso, you can install apps from 3rd party's without rooting.

I'm unclear about what I need to do to root my phone with it being locked on contract to O2 (UK) and with carrier branded firmware.
What I'd like to do is root the phone and upgrade the firmware if possible, especially if there are performance improvements.
I don't understand the KG6 and KH3 - what are these are how do they differ?
I don't really want to mod or get anything custom, I just want to keep it simple: root and get a more up-to-date firmware, if possible.

I'm not really that good with the technical stuff and am not confident enough at the moment to just go follow the instructions straight away - too many questions I am unsure on and uncertainties.
First, do I upgrade the firmware first or do I root first?
Do I need to upgade to a carrier-branded firmware - is there a newer on available?
Is it possible to upgrade to a non-branded firmware - or will that not work as I am on contract/locked with O2?
Which version do I upgrade to? I have been advised KE2 but I have also been told the latest version is KE7? I don't really understand which I should be trying to upgrade to and where to start. I'm finding it a bit confusing.
If I can upgrade, what settings should I make sure I have noted?
What happens to all the data?
It just feels like a minefield at the moment. :-(

You can flash any firmware via odin, it doesn't matter that your phone is locked, but it will stay locked.
Kg6 and kh3 are versions. You can update to them, once you flash a normal stock rom you won't be o2 branded anymore.
If you want a very simple setup with root, flash kh3 firmware from that thread, and then cf root kh3, you will be stock but have root and all the goodies.
You flash the rom first, then the cf root kernel via odin and you will have root.
As far as walking you though it, the guide is clear in the thread with the firmware, and me typing it out again wouldn't help I don't think.
As far as data, if you use a non wipe version, you won't lose anything, but you can backup your sms, mms, call log to your gmail with sms backup plan plus.
User app data can't be backed up without root.

I don't understand the naming convention or the differences between the different versions, such as Kg6 and kh3. What's the significance of 'kg' as opposed to 'kh' ?
Who makes these versions?
I've also been told about a 'ke7' version/update.
What is the latest branded firmware for O2 for the Galaxy S2? If there's a newer one, should I use that? Or would I be better off with one of the others above?
Do all these versions have the same GUI & look & feel? Do they all have TouchWiz 4? etc

Do I 'lose' anything by flashing with a non-branded firmware?
Sorry to be a pain, finding it hard to grasp. It may be simpler than I am making it but I'm just concerned about damaging my phone or rendering it unusable.

I chose the CF root option referenced in this thread and rooted 2 days ago. Very easy and straight forward. I'm a newbie to all this, and I'm finding it a lot of fun. I figured my car's ECU is modified, so why shouldn't my phone's be something other than stock?
They are all stock tw4 roms.
They all come from samsung, leaks.
K is the year, E G H etc is the month of releases.
H august, G is July, and so on and so forth.
You will lose any random bloatware o2 added.

Ok, sorted that last thing, I booted into the wrong mode.
Done a flash again with the KG5. Now, I see this my my firmware details:

I am new to the android .and bought my first galaxy s2. I will follow the s2 one click root to root my phone. I need to know if I need the same kernal as my device? My original kernal is JPKG5. do I need jpkg5 insecure kernal and then a jpkg5 secure kernal to root my phone? Or can I change my kernal to some other kernal of my choice?
my galaxy s2 gets pretty hot if I play intense games like asphalt or star legends, it even gets hot if I use mobile internet like EDGE (i guess its 2g internet nott sure) and browse the internet. The battery life sucks. I keep wifi, gps off and it last like 7 hours if I use mobile internet. Heard a different kernal might help.
One last question, what is the purpose of titanium backup? Do I get to restore my phones original self back again easily? Like will it unroot itself and return to the original gingerbread rom if I decide to change to cynogenmod? If titanium backup does not do that, then how can I unroot my phone and then get back to my original gingerbread rom?

Welcome to Android I am not sure about the kernel. The purpose of TB is that you can backup all your apps and data and if you flash a new custom rom you can use TB to restore all the apps and data. Its a very powerful application. You can always flash the original stock rom downloaded from Intratechs thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278. Then you will have an unrooted phone. Beware of the custom counter!!

CF-Root is 1 step only, this means for a non experienced user like you (as it's your first android device) less chance to screw up something.
Follow carefully the instructions.
Be sure Kies installed but NOT running (kill kies process) because kies block odin = semi bricked phone.
Takes about 30 seconds

im a bit confused, all those stock kernals in that link u gave are kernels and rom? Like if I have cynogenmod rom installed in my fone and then flash my phone again using one of those stock kernels/roms, I would be flashing back from cynogenmod to gingerbread 2.3.3 (JPKG5)?
Also what is the custom counter?

Is it possible for a gs2 user to use any kernel he desires? because I would like to use a better kernel than jpkg5 but stick to the original gingerbread rom 2.3.3. If you flash one of those ROMs you will flash from cyanogen to your original. The custom counter counts how many times you flash a custom rom / kernel - it can be a problem if you have to send your phone in for repair. Read more about it.

cf-root is an original kernel with root+cwm inserted. No it dosnt lock you to a single kernel, its just the most easy way to root your phone while keeping your stock rom. When you are rooted you then can flash any kernel or custom rom you want.
You only need to pickup the same (ex: kh3, ki4, kf1 etc..) for the root process, this to have full compatibility during root with the stock rom on your phone, but after successfull root you can flash any kernel/rom for the s2

my stock kernel is JPKG5, and i didnt find any JPKG5 in that link you gave earlier. there is one that says "JP_XSG_KG5" should i be using this to root my phone?

find a kernel that is in your region and then follow the procedure that is on Chainfire's thread....it has all the regions in his first post in his thread and explains everything you need to know buddy......

I'm with vodafail and I rooted with the above kernel you mentioned. GPS works perfectly for me.
After you root I would recommend flashing the xxKI3 or KI8 2.3.5 rom. Battery life has improved and screen colours are much better. I use this with hellcat kernel. He has bln implemented.

1) You are correct in saying that you can root your device by flashing a Chainfire kernel. This process takes 1 minute and will set you up with Superuser/CWM/Root.
2) Kernel does not affect GPS. Modem does. I am on Vodafone (AU) and using I9100TDUKF4. The GPS is perfect. I found with Vodafone if I used KI3/KI4 modem it would not perform very well...

Do NOT do this, it will give you network problems.
Just match the lash 3 digits of your current version (KH1) and download the CF root for that version. That will do the job. No problems with GPS.
Also, unless Vodafone releases a new baseband you should never flash a different baseband on the 9100T. DUKF4 is still the latest.

Thanks. I went to install Metamorph but before that I installed Busybox, I got the message that it may have installed multiple copies? How do I remove Busybox or check if its installed correctly?
Also with setCPU for the screen off profile should I set max to 500 or 800 and use on demand or conservative governor?
How would I remove the Vodafone start up screen/logo?
One last question; the GFG 2011 app that is pre installed by Vodafone, I pressed uninstall using Titanium Backup but the app is still there? It doesnt work though it just the button.

Download Odin3-1.85 at the bottom of the first post. Unzip it.
Disconnect your phone from your computer.
Start ODIN.
Download the correct file.
Unzip it.
Open ODIN and click the PDA button and select the CF-Root folder you just unzipped.
Turn off your phone. Hold down the volume down button, home button and lock button. Press volume up key when prompted.
Connect phone to computer by usb.
Click start on ODIN.
Wait for phone to reboot.
Done.

Busybox is part of CF root.
If you change the screen off profile in setCPU you may notice some weirdness on the lockscreen. Music widget might not work properly and the screen drag unlock may be a little unresponsive. Just experiment and see what works best.
There's a folder in /system/ (could be /system/bootani). Have a look in there maybe you can change the images or delete them and see what happens (make a backup first!)
Using root explorer (or similar) browse to /system/app and delete it. You can also use adb or terminal if you don't have a root file manager app yet.
You can PM if you want, I check it more often than threads.

I've got a Vodafone I9100T which I use in the Telstra network. Incidentally Telstra also sells the I9100T. I have created packages for myself that are the latest CF-Root stock ROM's but use I9100T-compatible modems and generic UK CSC's so there are no bloatware.
Is this something you'd like me to upload so you can flash I9100T's in one go?
I'm thinking of starting an I9100T thread just for this.

i have just rooted my I9100T with the normal I9100 one,but it's still I9100T after i rooted it.I thought i was failed initially,afterwards i find the kernel is not the one that i had before and i got the superuser & cwm so excited that i finally rooted my i9100t and the following thing have to do is unlock my sim card lock

i have just rooted my I9100T with the normal I9100 one,but it's still I9100T after i rooted it.I thought i was failed initially,afterwards i find the kernel is not the one that i had before and i got the superuser & cwm so excited that i finally rooted my i9100t and the following thing have to do is unlock my sim card lock

remember to flash your modem back to T once... or u will get crap reception (although vodafail is crap)

i haven't tried to un-root it but i have already downloaded the official firmware from

I got my orange samsung galaxy s2 less than a week. Yesterday after rooting, flashing villianrom, i like an idiot, installed Clearglass 1.6 Theme zip via CWM. After rebooting, the phone has now gone into a boot loop. But since i had a nandroid backup (NOT A ZIP FILE!), i thought i'll simply restore...but i can't! The sdcard won't mount. So then i found THIS THREAD.
After following the instructions, i still can't mount the SD Card, yet it's fine in windows 7.
I also thought i'd try to use the ODIN method to reflash my stock fw, but i can't find the correct kernel version . FYI, i'm from uk and the details of my phone are below:-
MODEL: GT-I9100P
ANDROID VERSION: 2.3.4
BASEBAND VERSION: I9100PBVKI2
KERNEL: [email protected] #2
BUILD NO: GINGERBREAD.BVKI3
PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME! I can't be without my phone
Not sure what you are asking .
Firmware is not kernel whatever your correct firmware is that includes the kernel .
You have a 1900P whatever the P is .
Find the firmware not the kernel here .

Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Still problems use usb jig to set rom counter to zero .
Return to service centre .

No idea what your firmware is as you have fl;ashed it .
Based on OP KI3
Then use KI4 CPW UK firmware is what i would do to get back to a working phone ,

Many thanks for showing me the correct version. I wasn't too sure as i didn't want to mess up the phone permanently. So i simply follow the ODIN boot loop guide?
The way it looks to me is that CWM/Phone is corrupted as i've tried everything - mount/format/unmount/re-mount sd, but it won't detect.
OH BTW! Can you please clarify something for me. I thought that since my orange stock rom said "KI3", i must always get a "KI3"....have i got that wrong? if so how can a KI4 work on a KI3 and why is it not necessary to stick with KI3?
Hey there wowandroid, the KI* is, in my humble opinion just a revision number, higher could mean better reliability in terms of signal and perhaps even battery drain

thanks AJ. It's just that my i9100 is P model (i9100P) and has NFC capabilities. I've managed to flash the phone back with the ki4 rom, so big thank you to JJEgan. I just thought that because i have a p model, i might end up removing features once i flash with a ki4.
Anyway, now that i've got it working, can i go ahead and use odin to flash villianrom/checkrom back again?

hi checkrom, nice way of upping ur post count, lol. if you hadn't noticed, i have already managed to get the phone working...i now want to know if its safe to reflash villian, since i've lost CWM.

Best would be just flash a suitable CF Root
And then u will get CWM after that baam install Villan
(LOL 5 min wate took me so long)
cheers mate. I assume from your nick on forum that you've got checkrom? If so, could you tell me how you get a great looking theme installed after checkrom has been flashed? The last time i tried it, i messed up and none of the kitchen apps themes ever changed the looks (just boring samsung looks)

checkrom is compactable with every Theme out there if its built for the latest XWKK5 version which checkrom is on!
So first
1)Install ROM
2)Use there Kitchen Download only any one of the themes, and hit apply and then install (Obviously)
OR
You can Download manually from the Forums any theme or any thing for stock XWKK5
3)After a theme install u will reboot.
4)Then use there Kitchen to flash any mods etc u want

1. What kernel do you recommend? I need a kernel which gives it the longest battery life if possible.

Hi guys. I have been a frequent visitor and learned alot about android and features. I am ready to root my galaxy s2 i9100
My details are :
Android version: 4.04
Model number gt-i9100
Baseband version: i9100XXLQ6
Kernal version: I9100xxlbq-cl911584
build number: IMM76D.XXLQB
I downloaded
ODIN 1.85
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LQB-v5.6-CWM5
I am not seeing the original kernal file up for download for my version. What else do I need for my root? Is there any advice such as best method and such. Thank you kindly everyone. Mods, if I posted in the wrong section, please move my thread to the correct location.
That's all you need mate. This kernel is declared safe by Chainfire but as any 4.0.4 kernel should not be used to wipe data because of possibility of emmc cap bug rendering your phone bricked. Root with this kernel but make sure to switch to custom safe one before attempting to wipe data.

Essentially flashing using a 4.04 firmware will brick the phone? or is it when I flash, it will be bad to flash using a 4.04 firmware? Sooo confused.
If anyone has the steps what I should do, please tell me. I am worried about bricking.
If I root the phone, when official JB comes out, will I be able to update?

I actually have the same HW version in my new SGS2 and I have checked with eMMC check (downloaded from Google Play) that my chip is safe from "brick bug" :laugh:
Now the question is: which kernel to choose, CF or Siyah ? I'm planning to use CyanogenMod 10 on this phone, does kernel version matter at all in this case ?

If GotBrickbug app by CF said your chip is safe than it shouldn't matter what kernel you use. Safe hardware.
Personally I always prefer rooting with CF kernels that match my FW version. Then if you're still unsure about the chip... flash siyah, go to advanced (while still in recovery) > reboot recovery. Then wipe data with siyah kernel just to be on the safe side. I always keep siyah 3.5.2 (the first transisiontl ics/jb kernel) for those purposes. CM10 built in kernels are all considered safe so that's the last time you'll ever be worried about it.

your phone will be rooted and u can then choose to install a custom kernel like Siyah v 4.1.5 on ur phone which gives u the latest CWM recovery thro which u can install any custom rom of ur choice(meant for i9100 though) on ur phone

Samsung releases firmware in various regions and with varied carriers. So I bet that till it is officially released it will take time but when it does you will get OTA if your are on 'STOCK' ROM. but if you move away to custom rom then you will have to update manually.

To revert back assuming you didn't do backup before, download 4.0.4 firmware for your region on sammobile and flash it using odin.. Then to upgrade it when official update are up just hit OTA, kies, or flash it via odin the same way like you flash 4.0.4..
If you don't have idea how to flash then google it, theres plenty much tutorials out there.. hope it helps

Actually I get confused myself hehe, by "Flash using CF, or CM 10" you mean flash what? The rest are ok..
Well, let's put this simple, Flash the CF-Root for your phone then you're rooted now, if you want to flash custom rom such as cm10 then flash it (the cm10 zip file to be flashed on recovery mode and don't forget to read the cm10 instruction before & after flashing), if you want to get rid of the triangle then do it with triangle away, finally to unroot and revert to stock, just flash stock firmware via odin..
