Trackball Notification Frequency - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
Long-time lurker (though in the Moto D1 forum), first time poster.
My girlfriend recently acquired a used HTC Eris. It works well, except for notifications. Whenever she receives a text message, the trackball slowly blinks about once ~ 10 seconds, which isn't very useful if you're just glancing at it.
I was hoping a 3rd party app like Handcent could override it -- but it could not. Furthermore, none of the non-root apps were able to have any affect either, including Blink, Led me know, or notify me.
I realize that custom colors aren't going to happen (that's fine) but what I'd like is an option to either increase the frequency of the trackball, or just have it stay on when there are notifications. While I'd prefer NOT to root, I realize that may be a requirement.
Also, I am aware of the multitude of Nexus One apps that do exactly what I'm asking to do. Apparently they don't work, or at least every app I've tried that claims to do it for the N1 doesn't work.
I'm tempted to just root it and try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5609688#post5609688
But I'm hoping to get some feedback from someone who has tried it first. Honestly given the track record of all the other N1 apps, I have trouble believing it would work. If it was mine I'd just dive in (I was flashing ROMs two days after I purchased my D1), but I am more cautious with things that don't belong to me
Thanks!

New to rooting...

So I finally took the plunge and rooted; I installed CM7, as well as an updated kernel (I think it was from "imoysen", or something like that?), though I'm still kinda shaky on these concepts. So I have a few questions.
First of all, on CM7, it appears that I don't have a voicemail app anymore. Previously, after installing CM7, I was missing the Android Market app (as well as other Google apps), and someone instructed me to flash GAPPS, which got these back for me. Am I going to have to do the same for voicemail?
Secondly, back when I was on stock, I like using Fancy Widgets and/ or Beautiful Widgets to get Sense-lock clocks (but with more themes). I'm noticing now, on CM7, though, that none of them are able to pick up my location for weather. Why is that, and how do I fix it?
Lastly, and this is one that I'm VERY curious about, now that I'm rooted, is there any way to make headphones with controls originally made for iPhones (the ones with volume +/-, and a middle button) work with the Thunderbolt? I know they don't work on stock because it's an Apple proprietary thing, or whatever, but is there a way to get them working on a rooted device?
Thanks much to anyone that can answer any of my questions.

No idea on Voicemail; I've only used Sense-based ROMs. I would assume that there are multiple voicemail apps available (but you could just use Google Voice, and avoid ever having to listen to voicemails! text message transcriptions of voicemails are much better)
Weather Location: In Settings -> Location, make sure you have location services enabled. Also make sure you have syncing enabled in Accounts&Sync.
As for the headphones, check out https://market.android.com/details?id=com.kober.headsetbutton&hl=en
You'll notice, however, in the description:
Headset Button Controller cannot support the separate volume control buttons on the iPhone headset - this is a limitation of the Android framework.

So you'll only get 1 button worth of control.
Hm. Well, in CM7, I don't see any kind of setting for "Location", nor is there anything for it in Accounts & Sync. I know when I was first trying to get it to work, I stumbled upon some settings for location, but even when I had everything enabled, it still wasn't picking up my location.
Bummer about the headphones... I have a really nice set that I like a lot, I just wish the three buttons worked with Android.
Flash this in your recovery. This is the latest network location apk. Should fix you location.

Cool, thanks, that did the trick!

[Q] Streak Doesn't Ring For Incoming Calls When Sleeping (All ROMS)

A Brief Overview:
When the phone goes to sleep (either after a time limit or manually hitting the power button to force sleep), it doesn't ring for incoming calls. The screen does show up with the details of the incoming calls but it doesn't ring or vibrate. However, if the phone is awake (the screen is on the home page), then it rings.
ROMs tried:
StreakDroid 2.2.2, 2.4.4
Stock ROMS 2.2.2, 2.3.3 (appropriate recovery installed)
Troubleshooting steps tried:
Nandroid Backup
Factory reset
reinstall the correct rom (Sometimes StreakDroid, sometimes Stocks)
Restore data
Root
Manually put the phone to sleep can call it only to find that the screen lights up with incoming caller details but no ring.
Waited for the phone to sleep after 30 seconds (that's the setting), then called it again. Caller details show up but no ring.
Prevented the streak from sleeping and called again. It rang this time.
It's similar to this but that resolution talks about wm, not android.
Cannot find a way to fix it and it's bugging me a lot. There are no calling profiles installed. I once used inEar app which managed ringing profiles but that was long ago and done a factory reset after that. Dunno if that messed it up or not.
I don't think it's an issue that others are facing... but it's been going on for a while for me. I don't wanna to believe that it's a hardware issue because it rings everytime the phone is awake and message notifications (txt, mms, whatsapp, email etc) work even when sleeping but incoming calls don't.
Can anyone help me? Thanks
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- FIXED -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
I tried Permission Denied, which told me that an app had access to my calls.. I couldn't remove that access for that app but I cleared the data for that app and uninstalled. That worked perfectly.
The app in question is called GBlocker. It blocks calls from unwanted people. I think any app that can block calls might have the same problem so be careful when you install them.
I seem to be having pretty much the same problem, stock 2.2.2 because this streak has me very confused.
@Winggie: Switch ROMs. Seriously. StreakDroid development has stalled and the ROM has some bugs that haven't been fixed unlike other Gingerbread ROMs such as DSC.

Good day all. I will start by saying that I am far from the techno wizards that appear to be here on this site. I know that it is stated to research which I have done but unable to post on the development sites as I am a nubie but that wouldn't have helped @ all as what I read seem like a total foriegn language to me. I would like to have my Streak upgraded to Gingerbread or higher but don't know where to go to get er done. The following quote is what I posted on my Goldwing sites as there are a bunch of very knowlegable gents there abouts & one of them led me here. Here is my problem "I have been a little frustrated when it comes to some of the technology today. Also Frustrated with Dell & my wireless service provider. I bought a Dell Streak5 that was locked to Rogers, a little over a year ago & was able to switch from the Blackberry to the Streak5. At the time Rogers didn't offer the Dell but now they do but they say because I bought the phone directly from Dell(@ double what Rogers wants for it), then it is up to them to upgrade the OS. Unfortunately due to the fack that I have done a fully default on my Dell account (not just the phone by the way), they won't do anything for me either. I know that if I want to increase the OS of my computer, I just take it to a computer store & they will upgrade to the higher model (for a price of course). Does anyone out there know how I can upgrade to gingerbread or ice cream Android on my own? I presently have Fryoto 2.2.1. Dani's phone (which we just got) was updated to 2.3.4 less than 2 weeks after we got it. It is beginning to look like I may be stuck with a 600 dollar phone that is massively outdated & I really do love this big phone." Thanks all for your help in advance. Angela aka fysty-1
If you did research, you didn't research hard enough. The basic information is in the wiki or a thread titled "Everything you wanted to know about the Streak but were too busy bricking it". The specific information for the ROM you want to use can be found in that ROM's thread.

Please excuse my ingnorance but if had read my post you would have seen that I stated that listening you folk talk is like my walking into a UN meeting with noone speaking english. I realize that you all are uber Geeks but I didn't know a geek was so unfriendly. I just asked if any of you all could point me to someone who DOES understand your language that could do the upgrade for me. I can barely use a computer & I do not run in the Hacker circles. I am a senior on a pension who happens to have & love the Streak. And because Dell nor Rogers will upgrade it from Froto, I need some to do it for me. (@ my cost BTW) thanks Angela
You misunderstand me. I AM trying to help you by telling you where to find the information. To do things like this requires reading and understanding what you're doing, otherwise you will turn your Streak into a very expensive paperweight. So if it seems like Greek to you, stay on Froyo and enjoy your Streak.
These are the facts of the matter. No amount of kvetching at me is going to change them.
Strephon, thanks so very much. Yes I may have misunderstood (not unusal fo mehehehe),but what I was asking, due to my very limited abilities in the field, I was asking if any of your 4mil member in westen Canada could link me to a business or individuale who could do this for me. When I mentioned being on a pension, I was refering to a Person with Disabilities pension so getting around is difficult. Thanks again, Strephon for your help. Angela
I'll leave it to the Canadian contingent to answer with certainty, but I'm not aware of businesses doing the upgrade.

Hey mate, I'm on Stock 2.3.3 (the official ROM from Korea - "Olleh") and it still happens. I don't think it's a hardware issue. One thing I've noticed, the mobile goes to "mute" and then rings and mutes again when not sleeping. When sleeping, I think it goes to mute when an incoming call is received and then doesn't do nothing after. The mute situation never happens when i receive texts or other notifications.
Odd, because I've never encountered that on any ROM I've used. The fact you are encountering this issue on multiple ROMs does not rule out the possibility of a hardware problem and in truth strengthens the possibility. However, I believe it to be a software issue since I am willing to bet that if you went back to Froyo right now the issues you are having would stop.

Mate, I agree with you totally that it means that hw is the problem but the reason I'm more inclined to believe that it's a software issue is because:
When I select "Vibrate always", it stops vibrating as well when in sleep mode.
When I select silent mode manually (volume to 0) then the phone vibrates even when sleeping.
The notifications work properly which means that the hardware is working fine. This includes any incoming txt, mails etc. It even rings for like 1 second for an incoming call and then mutes automatically. Looks like some app is manually putting it to mute on ringing. Although I can't find the root of the problem.
Is there an app that can read each setting that the phone has and allow me to view and edit them so that I can narrow down the problem?
I haven't found a dual boot option or else I would have tried Froyo or even eclair (I think it was shipped with it). I don't wanna lose my game progress and i kno titanium backup and backup pro can help but sometimes they fail too.. and that's wot i'm concerned about.
Permissions Denied will allow you to view all the permissions an app requires, and selectively block those permissions you do not wish to give to an app. I'm not sure if that's what you're actually looking for, but it's about as close as I can think of at this time of night here.

[Q] SMS backlight (cyanogenmod)

Hi guys.
Relatively new to the S3, but I have done a little bit of playing around with Android devices before.
I spent yesterday researching the forums, then manged to root and install Clockworkmod Recovery, and have since flashed the latest nightly of Cyanongenmod 10.
Love it so far, the only problem I've come across is that when I receive an SMS the phones backlight does not come on, which is a bit annoying because I often have it on silent and that's how I see I have a message.
Anyone know if this is just a setting I've missed, a bad flash, or just not supported? I've had a good look around the settings etc and can't seen to see an option anywhere.
Also, I read about the 'phone goggles' mode in cyanogenmod 10, but can't see that in settings either. Am I missing something?
Thanks.
Anyone?
I've found a setting within the messaging app which performs a 'wake and unlock' function if you enable quick reply. It's still not ideal though. Any help would be VERY much appreciated

Not possible on the stock messaging app. Get an app like gosms from the market, It has the option.
What do you mean by phone goggles?
Ahh that's a shame, I really liked the stock messaging app. Nevermind though, thanks for the help.
I saw Phone Goggles in the demo vid for Cyanogen, it was used for filtering communications at certain times, they said it was aka 'drunk mode' haha.

You mean quite hours? Settings->sounds->quiet hours.
or profiles?
settings->profiles?
From what I understood, it was a feature to say, stop me sending a message between certain times to certain numbers etc, I assume that's where the 'Drunk Mode' comes from ha.
Not something I think I'd use, just quite a cool feature I fancied having a play around with, maybe I misread though.
If you mean the LED, there should be LED options within the CM settings
I always added it manually for SMS, whatsapp, facebook etc and it worked fine.
I just can't remember on the top of my head right now.
Out of general curiosity, do you not prefer having the notification led light up rather than the screen turning on constantly. That's what I hate most about the stock messaging app on touchwiz roms, the backlight turning on after every message.

Personally I quite liked having the screen light up, maybe it's just because I'm used to it after using an iPhone for a few years.

[Q] Google Now Reminder Alarms Not Working- It's Driving Me Nuts!!!

I hope someone can suggest some ideas. I've been trying for months to get the alarm notifications to work on my Verizon S3. I've spent hours and hours for month after month looking at the forums, and have not been able to fix it- I really, really would like to get this to work!
The problem is, I never get alarm reminders for either:
- time to leave/traffic alerts when I have upcoming appointments
- reminders based on location
I've tried everything I know of in the book- I need an expert to please help me get this working!!! Either I'm doing something really stupid and missing something, I have some setting(s) wrong, or Google Now is somehow broken for me. Sorry for the frustration...
I'm running a Verizon S3, with 4.2.1 and recently I rooted the phone (the notifications have not worked since before nor after the rooting- I did it for other reasons).
PLEASE HELP!!!
Please- any suggestions? I'm willing to start at the basics (in case I missed something) all the way to the complex. I really could use some advise on getting the alarms to work on Google Now notifications...
I've had the same thing happening for about 2 months now (from August 2013), and even with factory wipes and firmware flashes it hasn't come back to me. :/ It's worked once or twice but I haven't figured out if I had done anything before hand to get it back. Then afterwards it stopped working again.
Same for me yet. I've hard reset both my S3 and my Nexus 7, and not luck. Rarely do I get any notices, and if I happen to, it's not at the right time. Must be on Google's end on my account or something. Very, very disappointing, with little hope if it's not specific to the device...
Me too! Try this....

Also happening to me on my Note 3 t-mobile. I have flashed many roms. I even reverted back to stock, and did an OTA update to 4.4.2 and so forth.
The only thing that made a difference was if I sign in to Google Now using my backup Google account, then IT WORKS! So I think that Google is having problems on the back end. There is absolutely no difference between my Google accounts. Why would one work and one not work? I've been posting it all over the web and Google tech support. You should too!
Solution Found
I found a solution to the problem. After being a die-hard advocate for Android, I gave up about 6 months ago and bought an iPhone. It works wonderfully, and does everything it's supposed to, when and where it is supposed to. Reception and voice recognition are better than my S3 was too. I've given up a few things (customization, screen size, etc.), but I finally have a phone that just works. I can add apps, delete them, change settings, etc., and things don't get screwed up; and I don't have to hard reset and start over with my phone again. Plus, most of the Google apps are available on the iphone, including Google Now.
I may look at Android again when version 5.0 comes out; but even with that, if it's my account that's messed up, I doubt I will ever get it fixed...
I really liked Android, but I finally got soooo tired of having to spend so much time getting it to work...
Google now reminders not working possible solution
Okay so I purchased a phone LG G Flex unlocked from T-mobile and using on Metro PCS two weeks ago, prior to this phone I had a Note 3 and used Google Now to set remianders with no problems. When I activated my FLEX and started using google now it did not remind me, i could see the reminders on google cards but no notification and or finger with string in the notification bar to actually remind me. I was really bummed and fustrated as I depend on the reminder function alot. Not having any luck getting Google Now remainders to work I started searching for other apps simular to it, just something to remind me. But funny enough all the others application I found on the app store would do the same thing NO reminders, so I started thinking it may not actually be Google Now but something on my phone. I finally found an application called Robin that did work but gave me my reminders about 2 or three mins before or after the set time, nevertheless it was working but early or late notifications still bothered me. So i decided to turn off the automatic time zone/Network provider time and Automatic date and time/Network provided time and that did the trick for me. I started up Google Now and set like a hundred reminders to test it and they all came in on time. I dont know if the phone being unlocked and used on another network made the network time buggy but as long as I keep the automatic date and time off it works well. I dont know if this is the solution for everyone but it was for me. hope this help.
Fantastic and detailed reply- thanks!
I also switched phones, now I'm on a LG G3 (love the phone)! I seem to be getting almost all of my notifications now, but I'll try to pay a little more attention to it, and keep your suggestion in mind if I'm having any troubles. Thanks again for the information!

Z2 Play Oreo bugs list - what have you found ?

So, I updated my Moto to Oreo yesterday using fastboot method. Quick and painless process.
But after initial setup and check "what's new" I've noticed first bug. Then I thought : maybe we could make a list with all the bugs we spotted ?
Just in case, so maybe we could also keep track when (or if) they will be eliminated ?
So, put your findings there - but I propose that it should be done only by those who already tried factory reset on their phones or complete wipe during flashing. Just to avoid the bugs which come from previous setup leftovers on the phone.
So, my entry to the list is :
- when setting up ringtones - notifications, when I play the selected sound it's most often played back very quietly for the first time, the second time I click the same sound it's played back with normal volume.
By the way, the audio equalizer is working properly now - for me this was the most important change
Found a few.
- Sound glitch is still here, can be unnoticed, but I found a funny thing now. When playing music, with Spotify, YT or similar; you can get a weird glitch in where the sounds goes up and down fast. You need to stop the audio source, and wait few seconds to keep playing.
- Nav Bar, moves a lot so you can really notice when the icons are slightly up or down. I understand why; to avoid damaged pixels, but is funny.
- Nav Bar again. It can be unresponsive, needing to press it twice to allow usage. Solve for this was to start the Moto App, enable the fingeprint sensor and just disable again. It makes the nav bar Works normally then.
- EQ finally Works. But you need to get into a move few options unless is gonna be bass oriented even after you open the EQ settings, you would see a flat config, but the sound match a bass oriented way. Solve is just to mess aroung a Little until is working correctly.
- Moto App Launcher still stops working along with Google. Easy workaround is just Forcing Quit, and go back home. Other workaround for me was being in the Beta testing for the Google. alongside better performance and less problems with Moto App Launcher you can use the Pixel at Glance widget.
So far what I got
Hey there, I've got a few bugs to report to the INDIAN unit of MOTO Z2 PLAY 64GB 4G
1. I've MOTO Z PLAY too and i compared both the devices after the oreo update, in Z i can change the icon shape to round, circle square etc. But it's missing in the MOTO Z2 PLAY
2. I cannot make or receive calls using JIO 4G sim even though i can use this sim on another android mobile MOTO Z and can easily make and recieve calls from there, although the internet is working fine with. MOTO Z2 PLAY
Theae are the major 2 bugs I've found till now..
My Battery life is lower.
ive never seen Batterysaver orange until I updated. Now I have to dust off my TP mod.
Hey guys i need help, i have stock oreo on my Z2. After upgrading it was giving up some issue while on lockscreen and even delay in showing up moto display. then i format my phone and it all well, then i installed greenify and gave it access via adb commands, and the passing of lockscreen again start giving issues, i revoked the greenify commands and still it is giving the same lag on passing lockscreen and drlay in moto display to appear. Can i do something other than full format and without loosing my data.
Mine's performance and battery life have actually improved. I get 6+ hours battery life throughout the day, something I never got in nougat.
The only thing I've noticed is that the screen sometimes doesn't wake up when I pick up the phone, but it's very rare and it also happened to me in Nougat.
So far so good.

Yeah, the battery is now amazing. First day i got 9h SOT and 20h total. With less usage I get 40 hours with 5,5h SOT! On Nougat it was like 24 hours and 6h SOT.
The only issue I have is that Moto Key force closes sometimes.
Is it normal, that gmail syncs like every 10 min. and that on Oreo this is shown in the Statusbar?
I've found the Nav Bar unresponsive, too.

P2P feature not working for YouTube or Google map or any app
I also have this issue, PiP is not working for me, there is no option in settings for this but the specific for every app, and for all of them it is active. What I have noticed is that the camera image seems to be more "dusty" like with a higher ISO this did not happened with Nougat, I have not verified image results after photographs. I also have a very impressive battery life.
I don't think this counts as a bug, but it is something that is making me crazy since I upgraded to Oreo:
-"Ok Google" detection now only works when the screen is on (if "trusted voice" is on, it will work in the lockscreen, but never when the screen is off).
The option related to "Ok Google" detection changed from "anytime" to something that indicates that the screen has to be on. I had a Moto X (2013) some time ago, and something that I loved about that device was how I could ask google to do some things even if the screen was off. I loved that about my Moto Z2 Play running Nougat, and I didn't expect it to stop working like that with the upgrade.
Does anyone know if it is possible to make it work with the screen off like before? Thanks in advance!
Thank you so much for posting this, you saved me man! I was just about to tap update before i saw this post. The only reason i bought a Moto Z2 Play in the first place is because it was one of the few phones that allowed OK Google detection while the screen is OFF. Very sad to learn they removed this feature in Oreo, though now i think i understand why everyone is reporting better battery life. In Nougat a microphone was always listening for "OK Google" and thus constantly consuming a certain amount of power. According to your post this is seems to no longer be the case.
I doubt that this will ever be addressed so i won't be upgrading to Oreo, having to approach your phone for Google Assistant to acknowledge voice commands is unacceptable, and the fact that only some flagship phones allow it is an embarrassment.

Clear data of the Google App.
I'm on Oreo on the Z² Play and Ok Google works just fine with the screen off.

Also turn it on as a "Trust Agent" in settings-->security, if you have a screenlock.
You'll also find Moto Voice's Screen unLock activation there. if you use it.
I am scared of upgrading to Oreo since i have no sure way of knowing if i my phone will lose the ability to recognize "OK Google" when the screen is off. If i suffer the same fate as ClowReedd there would be no way for me to roll back and i would lose the functionality i bought this phone for in the first place. Motorola support is incapable of understanding the difference between a phone that can be unlocked with "OK Google" when the screen is completely off and a phone that can achieve the same only when you manually push the power button so you can see the lock screen. But to be fair there is no company in the world whose support is capable of understanding this, i had an extremely difficult time selecting a phone to purchase because of this. Multiple Samsung employees for example would either claim a certain Samsung model that i know has this capability doesn't have it, or claim that a phone that i know doesn't does. Google is also of no help, i have tried to find a list of phones with this capability and got nowhere. Most flagships have it( though some do not), but most midrange phones do not. Which is the only reason i bought a Moto Z2 Play.
Hopefully ClowReedd will respond whether or not clearing the Google app data fixes the issue, since if it doesn't nothing can be done. Google provides absolutely no support for it's assistant other than copy pasted responses online from what i have to assume are bots.

Exactly how many people have reported such an issue? If it was common, Motorola would probably know exactly what you are talking about. Have you searched the MZ²P forums? how many posts have you found?

The ability for Google Now, to unlock phone and carry out tasks/commands. Is the User Agent, as I posted above.

Well we already have 1 report in this thread, and it is not hard to imagine that a detail like this would go unreported since i am not even sure if it is a bug. Also a lot of people including yourself don't even know the difference between Google Assistant(i am guessing that is what you mean by Google Now) being able to unlock the phone and being able to wake and then unlock the phone when the screen is completely off.
Most people do not care one way or the other which is why this change could easily go unreported, assuming it is indeed a bug and not just an intentional change to conserve battery life.

if you look hard enough, you'll find ONE person who's phone exploded.
These forums are for solving problems, not to alleviate your FEARS.
Many things MIGHT happen, there is no point clogging up the threads listing all of them.
If you have a problem, let's solve it,. If you are worried your phone will attract lightning ?, there's no helping you.
Handsfree is important to me, since the 2013 Moto X, (I've had many Moto phones since), It's an invaluable function when phone is lost in the couch cushions.
You are thinking too hard, and making assumptions, I know exactly what you are talking about. Waking the phone and unlocking it are lumped together, what good is a feature that wakes the phone but doesn't unlock it (it can be optionally restricted), likewise what good is handsfree activation, if it can't wake the phone? it seems redundant to spell that out!
Google Now, was the original name for the Google Assistant, phased out last year, let's not nitpick.
BTW: it's fairly easy to go back to Nougat, should you desire it.
Regarding Picture in Picture mode, particularly for Youtube - this is a limitation that Google has put in place that only USA users can access, unless you purchase Youtube Premium. Can confirm PIP works with VLC media player. Netflix only has PIP with 8.1
