Mac address - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can someone tell me where the Mac address is stored in SGS2.
I have found /etc/wifi/nvram_net.txt but in that file it is a different mac address then the one i see in wifi advanced settings.
/Mike

Anyone?
I really need this information.

Be a pioneer, try the two options and post the result here.

Have been a pioneer .
But it did not help to change in nvram_net.txt.
Doesn't anyone know in what file the mac address is stored?
/Mike

Menu > settings > About phone > Status > wifi mac address
(if that is what I understand from question)

Thanks
But i want to know in what file in the os the mac address is stored so i can change it.

I actually thought it was chipware (pic) stored on the actual wifi hardware. I know you should be able to override.

How do I override it?

Dunno, much like linux I would guess, why do u want to?

Not the best of ideas, and may not even work, why not sign in on your phone?
And for your "How do i do in linux?" question, you use goolge to search for a query that millions will have had for the widest used classification of operating system in the world
But... a simple google search gives
http://www.robmcghee.com/android/changing-the-mac-address-on-android/

I am in a hotel and with a pc connect to the hotspot and get a wifi connection:
Then when i start to surf i get redirected to http://hyd.guestnet.int/login/
Where i fill in username and password in a form and i send the information to http://1.1.1.1/logon.cgi.
On my phone i get a wifi connection but is not redirected and i can not surf to http://hyd.guestnet.int/login/
I have tried all ways that is described but none is successful.
That is the reason I wonder if someone knows how i can change the mac in os on a SGS2.
/Mike

you tried downloading opera or firefox for your mobile? Either or may make it so you can login on that form?
Easier solution if it works

Have tried Opera mobile, firefox and dolphin, none is working.
/Mike

Don't forget to set the User Agent of Opera/Firefox/Dolphin to Desktop. Does the hotel ask for a login in the form of a website, or is it a dialogue box? Because websites can easily load on your phone.

I have the Useragent set to Desktop.
The hotel redirect me to a webpage http://hyd.guestnet.int/login/
Where i fill in username and password in a form and i send the information to http://1.1.1.1/logon.cgi.
On my phone i get a wifi connection but is not redirected and i can not surf to http://hyd.guestnet.int/login/
I can not get the phone to show the webpage with login.
Now i was thinking to set the same mac addres on my phone as on the pc and use the pc to logon and then switch of wifi on pc and turn it on on the phone.
/Mike

Is it possible to change the mac address on SGS2?

Browsing desktop web server from xda

Hi all,
I know we can connect to the internet using desktop connectivity with ActiveSync.
Now, I want to develop some simple WAP application and place it in my http://localhost (desktop IIS) for testing purpose. How can I browse it this site from my xda?
Anyone can help? TIA.
try http://<ip-number of Desktop PC>
It doesn't work at all. Beside, I use dial-up connection in my desktop, so the desktop doesn't have any ip before connecting to the internet, and I want to develop the application offline.
I tried to assign permanent ip address to my desktop in without connecting and it still doesn't work.
internal network
I doubt you have networked computers but here goes...
If you have a network card in your PC for networking. Then you have an IP address with this. normally "192.168.???.???" so you could use that.
Hope this may be of help ..
or http://127.0.0.1
You will need to be connected to the internet on your PC before you try to browse, or you will need to configure internet connection sharing while your xda is cradled for it to work.
Though I can't test this (no webserver running), it's gotta work:
Put your XDA in the cradle, and the go in VXutil and go to info. There, under the adapter called "Serial on USB," you should see some IP config info. The "Default Gateway" should be the IP of your machine (as your XDA sees it).
Just for kicks, mine turns out to be 192.168.55.100
I've tries http://127.0.0.1 but since my desktop computer is not network and I don't have any ethernet card installed, I cannot assign IP address to this machine?
What is Vxutil anyway?
Thanks.

[Q] VPN Connection

does anyone know how to make a working vpn connection with the touchpad?
i couldnt get one.
i have win 7
tried vnc too,
did anyone get an working vpn connection?
works for me. my proxy server uses pptp so i download pptp plugin from market and all's good.
I think if you have an ASA you can try the built in anayconnect client provided you have a mobile license activated on the Cisco otherwise use IPSEC on your gateway device. I never played with pptp on the touchpad before.
I saw this but what can I do by joining a VPN?
is there someone who can write up an a quick tutorial for the ones that dont know how to do it.
that would be apriated.
i want to control windows 7 remotly with it

Bump... Same question. Out of all the people who have recently bought the touchpad, there has to be someone out there that can give a short explanation on how to use the native VPN capability to connect to a Windows system. I have searched all over the net for the answer and have come across many unanswered forum threads.
Below are instructions I used on Win 7 to create an incoming VPN connection to make it available to be connected to.
pcworld. com/article/210562/how_to_set_up_vpn_in_windows_7. html (take the two spaces out of the link, cant post links yet since Im a NOOB!!)
Step by Step: Building a VPN (Incoming)
Step 1 Click the Start button, and, in the search bar, type Network and Sharing.
Step 2 Click Change Adapter Settings in the left-hand menu.
Step 3 Click File, and then New Incoming Connection.
Step 4 Select the users you'd like to give access to and click Next.
Step 5 Click Through the Internet and select Next.
Step 6 Select the Internet Protocol you'd like to use. (The default TCP/IPv4--the line highlighted in the screenshot below--will work fine.)

On the touchpad when using the Cisco AnyConnect VPN connection type and enter the host name, I get this error "Connection attempt has failed due to configuration issue with server"
When using the VPNC connection type, and enter the host name and password, I am prompted to fill in several fields that I dont know what to enter.
I use my laptop to log into my Win7 desktop all the time easily via the Remote Desktop Connection app. Hopefully there is something similar coming to the touchpad.
I have an openvpn subscription with strongvpn - this works well for the technically deficient peeps like myself to have an added layer of security when using windows machines in a public wifi area (i.e. hotels)
I asked strongvpn about any support for webos, and they were not sure of any workarounds to date. Any new ideas on this? I am using an open vpn (as opposed to their ptpp). They said that on rooted android devices open vpn will work following one of their tutorials.
If you are technically sound only then you will be able to set up a VPN and solve these kind of issues yourself..Average PC users like me will avoid indulging in these configurations as they are too complicated for us
Why not try an already established, reliable VPN service provider for touchpad??
you can definitely Google them and can choose amongst the choices you get..That would be far easier believe me
[Q] VPN support
I was wondering if anyone has tried vpn support on the touchpad? I am looking at using it overseas as a way to watch amazon VOD while I travel.
Edit: Found out I needed to download a free app from app catalog for PTP support. Works now when I connect to my school network. Also I found out that playon services work too on touchpad so I might try that for netflix.

[Q] Weird wifi issue

Hey guys,
i have an issue with my wifi connection, but only in one specific place.
Here goes: I can connect and use wifi everywhere(without any problem), but not at my friends house. Wifi connects without a problem, but after that i cannot use it (can't download from market, can't surf, etc.). It says there is an internet connection failure, altough i'm still connected.
I know for sure there isn't a problem with routers, modems, networks, etc. coz i setup his network myself (exactly the same as al the other networks i use) So in this there cannot be a problem. My friend can connect his iphone4, my wife can with S+, even a guy with an ACE can connect and use, except for me and my ACE.
Already reset router, modem and phone (even other firmware), but still nothing!
Hope somebody can help with this, coz i'm really bugged out on this one.
Cheers.
Check if u have a WPA protection.. My ACE doesnt work with Wifi with WPA pwd..
or
Try this:
Go to Wifi Settings, select the hotspot you are connecting to, forget the connection, restart ACE, connect to the hotspot again by entering the password
Hope this helps..

Check on router setting the ip address your phone is using is not bind to another device,s mac address this is on the router settings something like ip & Mab binding.
It could be the ip you are trying to use alocated for use by another device only.
However u will be able to connect to the router it will show in the router you phone is connected and alsoshow in wifi on the phone you are connected but you will NOT be able to connect to the internet.

Hey,
Thnx, will try this ASAP. This might be it.
Question: If my phones ip-adress is indeed the problem, is it possible to change it without any problem? Or should i delete the binded ip at the router?
Cheers.
ip no problem
You can set another ip address manually for phone first find out what routers ip address is
normally 192.168.1.1 is default for lots of routers then see router has DHCP
enabled this means router issues ips to devices. if it is enabled the leave your phone as is and check on the router under ip & Mac binding see if it is enabled UNanble u can always put it back
even better see on router what ip your phone is using then checxk in ip & mac binding that it is not assigned to another device for use. if it is u can delete that binding.
binding means you give a certain device's mac address a certain ip so only that device can you that ip
for example say your phones mac adress is 12:34:56:78:90:00 and you assign or give it ip adress 192.168.1 10 then in theory only your phone can use this ip. THIS not always the case depends on what make router. Whilst we are at that what is your router model.
Look in these places on roter
DHCP settings
IP & Mac Binding.

sorry got carried away yes delete bind ip you can always rebind. this below / following is from my router most routers are similar.
IP & MAC Binding Help
To manage the computers well in the LAN, you could control access among computers by ARP Binding.
MAC Address - The MAC address of the controlled computer in the LAN.
IP Address - The assigned IP address of the controlled computer in the LAN.
Bind - Whether or not enable the arp binding.
Modify - Edit or delete item.
Link - Turn to IP & MAC Binding Setting page.
Example: If you want assign 192.168.1.4 to PC A (MAC: 00-E0-4C-00-07-BE), and any other PCs could not use this IP,you should first enable "ARP Binding", and add a new item as below.
ID MAC Addrss IP Address Bind Modify
1 00-E0-4C-00-07-BE 192.168.1.4
DHCP ip Address Reservation Help
When you specify a reserved IP address for a PC on the LAN, that PC will always receive the same IP address each time when it accesses the DHCP server. Reserved IP addresses should be assigned to servers that require permanent IP settings.
MAC Address - The MAC Address of the PC that you want to reserve IP address for.
Reserved IP Address - The IP address of the router reserved.
To Reserve IP Addresses:
Enter the MAC Address (The format for the MAC Address is XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX.) and the IP address in dotted-decimal notation of the computer you wish to add.
Click the Save button when finished.
To modify a Reserved IP Address:
Select the reserved address entry as you desire, modify it. If you wish to delete the entry, make all of the entry fields blank.

[Q] How to bypass internet content filter?

Ok, my workplace has a wireless network with an internet content filter called "optenet". I know the wireless network's SSID and Password. When I open my stock browser I can't access any web pages what-so-ever but I have found that by using the Opera Mini Browser that I can access all webpages. But no other internet apps will work (XDA app, YouTube app, etc.)
My question is... Is there some method of allowing my phone to completely bypass this filter? Whether I'm on the stock browser, youtube app, etc.?
Anyone...?
Sent from my SGH-T959 (Samsung Vibrant)
I would think that since your stock browser is running off the APN (carrier) that if you set up a new APN called "workAPN" or something like that and instead of putting in your carrier's proxy and server settings, you put in the settings of your workplace it should work. Get your wifi's ip address and see if you can pull the settings from there or buy the IT guy lunch and see if he'll tell ya.
Opera most like runs from a different mobile server to route you to the mobile pages and their links. The stock browser runs through your mobile network/wifi with those proxy/server settings.
I might be way off but sounds good to me. If it doesn't work, you can always just delete the workAPN you created. Might want to check into setting up a VPN too. Not sure how those work.

Haha, if it were only as easy as to buy the IT guy a sandwich. Anyways I'm still not sure I completely understand. How would I go by getting my workplace's WiFi settings from its IP address...
-----
@Woodrube Also, how's that battery saving guide coming along?
Pretty sure if you put the IP address in your browser bar and hit enter, it will go to the router settings and you should be able to pull it off there. That is what I did awhile ago when I bought a wifi from a garage sale. Since you are on corporate, might be a little tougher b/c of security and such but I be it could be done. Check out this for a rough idea to get into the settings page.

You need to have another computer running a SSH server and this program connect to the SSH Server, and routes all traffic on your phone through the tunnel. Here is a primer on SSH Tunneling "howtogeek.com/wiki/How_to_Use_SSH_Tunneling" and how it works.

The link should be a lot more clear now. If you don't have a computer running at home 24/7 you can also get a free shell that allows you to run background process' and tunnel through that. And to look for free shells you can take a look at "shells.red-pill.eu"

[Q] Blocked from connecting to my home wifi.

Hey guys,
My Father changed something in the router settings yesterday which blocked only me and my brother from connecting to the Wifi.
Anyone else can connect normally and gain Internet access. It is a password protected access point but I have the password and I entered it correctly and it connected but it says "Authentication error occurred".
Does anyone have an idea of what he blocked? Mac address? IP? what? and how can I change it?
Thanks in advance!

Mac address definitely. I would also offer he reserved IP addresses to certain Mac adds & limited number of ip address (i.e., 2 or 3 vs 255). Can you get local access & then access router w/its id name & password?

I have only once changed Mac add & that was inadvertantly & rooted. Don't know if Mac add can be changed w/o root. IP address theory might be tested using a VPN app (may still need connection) or app such as Hide My Ass.
Good luck.
Edit: Now that I think about it, you can't test IP theory w/o outside connection. Sorry.

I have only once changed Mac add & that was inadvertantly & rooted. Don't know if Mac add can be changed w/o root. IP address theory might be tested using a VPN app (may still need connection) or app such as Hide My Ass.
Good luck.
