No Radio - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hopefully this isn't too hard to solve. I have an HTC Evo, and offered to root my friends Thunderbolt. I rooted it fine, everything works flawlessly, and I even flashed a ROM without an issue.
Now, here is the thing I cannot figure out. Every ROM i have installed (BAMF, Synergy, etc) has no radio when it boots up. There are two processes that stop responding (A Sync process and a DM process). There is just simply no radio at all. I can connect to wifi, and I can browse the internet that way, but it refuses to show any connection to Verizon.
Any idea as to what is causing it? Again, I am usually on my Evo, so the Thunderbolt is a little bit different territory.
Keep in mind, all the ROM's flash and boot fine. Everything on the ROM works fine, with the exception of the radio.
Thanks for your help guys.

You have to install a new radio for the gingerbread Rom. In the dev section there is a Rom and kernel list. Find the mr2 radio there. Rename it to PG05img.zip, place on root of SD card, boot into hboot (phone off, hold vol down and power. It will flash the radio. Once it reboots delete or rename that radio file so it won't try and flash it again the next time you boot into hboot. And your done.
sent from my BAMF'n thunderbolt.

Do you see any notification of data on the phone? (1x, 3g, 4g)
Did you make sure to snap the back of the battery cover on tight as it has a connection for the antenna for the battery?
Are you trying to flash the MR1 radio on a ROM that requires either MR2 or MR2.5?
All of these could cause the issue you are having.

Have you tried to reflash one of the radios in hboot? Plus with not all the roms based on the new radios and some of them are this can cause you to lose data if the rom isn't compatable with the radio. Just make sure the roms you are installing are not based on the MR2 or MR2.5 radio while you have a MR1 radio and vice versa.
I hope this helps. If not you may want to just find the original rooted stock OTA ruu and reflash it in hboot. This will wipe all your data so if you have a way to back up apps and data like mybackup pro or titanium backup.
Here is the rom and radio listing thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081930
Edit: Yeah almost forgot about the battery cover having the antenna on it like Beastclaw said

Ah. Downloaded the MR2 file, renamed it and flashed it and it worked perfectly.
Thanks so much, you all are the ****.
Going back to the Evo section now.
Again, thanks for all your help. *Waves*

ROM Questions

Not to long ago i update to DCD's latest rom and radio. I never got the GPS to work for some reason though. I was wondering with the new verizon ROM out is there an easier way to get GPS. Could i flash to verizons new rom so that i have the radio and the rom and then flash back to dcds and still keep verizons radio. Becasue for some reason i just cant get the GPS to work with DCDs rom. Also i have noticed my phone lagging a TON latly and im not sure why. My contacts wont open somtimes and when i answere a call or dial out it rings but it doesnt show the phone on the screen untill about 45 seconds into the call. its been a pain coming out of sleep too and i dont think im running that much stuff on it. Any Suggestions?
(i also am getting a white spot on my screen, i have heard of this happening before. Is it a problem that gets worse and is there anything verizon can do to fix it?)
First off, if you load Verizon's latest update, you will not be able to use GPS as of yet unless you pay for VZNavigator.
If you have radio 3.42.50 and Rom 3.2.6, you should have no problem getting GPS to work.
1) Go to Settings... Phone... Services... and check the box next to 911 only. Then click ok. Exit... Soft-reset if you feel like it. Then go back and change it to Location On. Click ok... soft-reset.
2) Do the GPS - Fix found HERE
3) Download GPS Viewer... I have it attached. When you run it... hit scan.. this will find what port the GPS is on. Then select that port and hit Open Port. This will start streaming data. Go to GPS Status at the bottom... and you should see some locations popping up if you are in open air.
Let me know if you get this far.
that program you gave me doesnt work on windows mobile. thats a Computer version.
nevermindi was wrong. im just having priblems connecting to my computer. do you have a cab file?

Here you go.
It works!!!! Awesome! It reads the GPS port. VZ navigator still doesn't work on the xv6800. It keeps loading privacy policy and then saysits unable to getr policy setting.
But at least the GPS works now after the rom update. Thank you!
GPS won't work???
Verizon XV6800
dcd_titan_3.2.6
DCD Radio 3.42.50
SPL 240
Location set to on
(tried toggle between 911 and location on)
Ran GPSVIEW scan... found GPS on com4
set external gps program port to com4
hardware port set to none
set to automatically managed
tried reflashing rom
soft reset a million times
what else can i try?
Soon to flash...
I am probably going to finally flash a DCD rom for the first time today. It would be nice though if the images or software downloads on the GPS fix wiki were available. That's the only thing holding me back right now. GPS is the only reason to flash for me, so I want to make sure I can get it working.
GPS on VX8600 rules!
Well I finally gave in and flashed the newest DCD rom & radio. Wish I had done that a long time ago. I was having no luck with the GPS till I read this thread. The the GPS locks super fast and is VERY accurate in Google Maps. This site rules.
While I am technical, I new new to everything phone related.
I have Radio 3.37.75 and ROM 3.57.605.1
Do I need to go back and install a different Radio and Rom version to run the GPS fix and enable GPS?
Thanks!

You need to install a custom rom ( to replace the 3.57.605.1 VZ Rom) to enable the GPS chip on the phone. That rom has the GPS disabled. DCD 3.2.6 rom is what i'm using and it runs pretty sweet.
As far as the Radio rom goes, i dont think you have to update it. There some debates going on in the forums about wheither the new VZ radio rom is better or worse then the current radio rom that was ripped from attel. Some say its better, some say its really the same (same file size) and some say its way worse.
So in summary, to run the GPS Fix, atleast install DCD's custrom rom first. (Note: Do not let Custimization run, the rom is based off a latest sprint rom, so letting it run as a verizon users messes things up. soft reset after initial bootup after a flash and pull the battery if it starts to do it. also remember to hard reset after flashing any rom)
PS. If you flash the radio rom, you will have to do *228 again to reprogram your number back into the phone.

If you flash DCD 3.2.6 do let customization run, he rips out the carrier specific stuff out of the rom, so it can actually hurt not to run customization on his rom. Only stop customization run if you are flashing an original carrier specific rom that is not your current carrier, i.e. if you flash a sprint original rom on a VZ phone, etc.
While based on a Sprint rom, he has taken the time to make it safe to run on any carriers phone.
DCD's customization runs UC and I think a few other house cleaning items, so it's important for it to run.

[Q] New radio 47.63.35.21U_7.16.35.11

Hi all,
I am new to android so please forgive me if i am unclear about my question.
I've also digged for answers but came up with nothing.
Anyway I was hoping someone could help me with the new radio 47.63.35.21U_7.16.35.11.
Ever since i've upgraded to 7.16, i've lost the abilities to:
1. connect to mobile network
2. able to detect and lock on to any satellites.
Downgrading to the original radio didn't solve those issues...
I am currently using Gene Poole's Liberated hfr005b and it's awesome! Battery acting like it should.
My satellite problem is very similar to klbmth in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12477387&postcount=25
and as for my mobile network i've tried changing settings as instructed by lateral18 in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14117740&postcount=556
i did my hard reset/wipe dalvik/format system before i flashed my aria with hfr005b and the new radio.img...
does anyone have similar problems to my situation??
Thanks in advance!
Do you have an AT&T-branded Aria? If so, I'd suggest running the RUU from here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9D9NGT6J
This will restore your phone back to the factory default (including reverting the radio back to the original state).
You can do this without losing any settings by doing this:
1) Make a Nandroid backup.
2) Run the RUU to revert your phone back to factory defaults and (hopefully) fix the radio problem. Important: Do not use the RUU from HTC's website. If you do you won't be able to root afterward. Use the one in the link above.
3) Make sure everything is working again (mobile connection and GPS).
4) Use Unrevoked again to reinstall Clockwork on the phone.
5) Once you have Clockwork installed, do a Nandroid restore. Nandroid does not back up the radio image so you should be back just like you were except with a working radio image.
Also I'd strongly suggest not installing any radio updates in the future.
Hi drumist!
thanks for the quick reply!!!
yes i do have AT&T branded Aria and i'll definitly try out your suggestion.
i flashed the new radio because it was said to "fast lock to sats" and so on... which seemed nice to have
i had no idea it would have such an effect on my aria (when it is fine with everyone else)...
however i was wondering, if not too much trouble, could you please elaborate why updating radio is not a good idea?

Well, basically it's one of the few risky things you can install on your phone. When you install a ROM, there's basically no risk involved because even if the installation fails, you can just get back into Clockwork and install another one or try again. There's no risk of permanent damage.
Installing a radio image through Clockworkmod, however, is somewhat risky. Ideally nothing goes wrong and it works fine. However if something DOES go wrong, it's possible to permanently brick your phone in the process.
There's nothing specifically bad about updating the radio -- if it works then it's no big deal. But since it seems like something did go wrong on your phone when you installed the radio, you're lucky that the phone is still working at all.
I doubt you would even notice any difference between the two radio versions anyway. The differences appear to be very minor.

Having just bricked my phone with messing with radio images, I couldn't agree with you more.
T
thanks for the quick explanation drumist!
and sorry to hear tedkunich's aria was bricked from flashing radio image... that sucks
just to report back:
GPS is working fine again! found sats within seconds and got a few fixes within half a min...
mobile network, on the other hand, isn't... i think it has to do with Gene's ROM... because when i restored a previous backup (fr008) i can connect (WCDAM) right away...
anyway i am more than grateful already... and i'll do more digging on the mobile network issue...
thanks again!

Radio problem

I rooted my phone using this guide. I wanted CM7 on here, so I flashed the MR2.5 radio. My phone came with MR1. It flashed properly, but now I have no signal and it shows me as having no baseband.
What did I screw up? From my knowledge of radios from my DInc, I can't flash 2.5 again or it'll brick (can't flash the same radio twice in a row).
Would I be able to flash MR2, then MR2.5 again? Basically, wtf do I do, and why did this happen?
you flashed the wrong cm7...there are two versions...one for the mr1 radio and another for the mr2 radios
I didn't even flash CM7. I said I flashed the MR2.5 radio.
When this happened to me I made a backup of my ROM, flashed the file found here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1082114, loaded my backup, and tried again with a different download of the MR2 radio. My theory on why the no baseband thing happened to me was a bad download... I've since started checking MD5 sums every time I flash anything through HBOOT which I should have been doing all along.
I'll try that. It shows me as no baseband, no phone number, no anything. Crap.
if you didn't flash a rom then its normal. You can't flash a 2.0+radio with an mr1 rom and have signal. Nothing is wrong just flash an mr2 rom.
Sent from my HTC ThunderBolt using XDA Premium App
Alright I'll try flashing CM7 then. I hope this works. This is a lot more involved than my Incredible, haha.
Edit: Yup, that's definitely it. I flashed my original MR1 ROM and radio and I'm fine.
Thanks guys!
If you have the MR1 rom, the MR2.5 radio will not work for it due to the new RIL.
And I have flashed radios twice in a row before and nothing has happened...but if you take my word for it it's on you
Yeah it was just something I heard when I was working with radios on my incredible. No clue how true it was, but it's not worth the risk.
I got everything sorted out, thanks guys!

Bricks like that don't happen on the thunderbolt if you flash the radio twice in a row, but I still wouldn't recommend it

Help on gb radio

I am in the USA on ATT.
I think the gingerbread radio is the cause of my Slacker radio problems. It didn't do it before. It seems that sometimes when there is a cell tower change Slacker stops and I lose the bluetooth connection to my Ford Sync. Seems to happen at the same places. I want to try another radio. (Pandora does it also; but not as often)
Questions:
1) which radio do you suggest I try (can I go back to Froyo one and if so where may I find it?)
2) I am unlocked/rooted and running a basically stock gingerbread. Do I need to find a flashable zip and use CWM or can I use RSD to flash the radio? (I definitely don't want to hard brick the phone and I keep seeing about not flashing back but I don't think this applies to radios)
Thanks!!
An option:
Personally, I would just deal with it because I wouldn't want to risk my toy...but...
there is an update, albeit, hacked radio that not only should be more reliable, but I've also found to get better reception, and use less battery.
The installation process is described here:
http://www.droidmatters.com/news/breaking-motorola-atrix-4g-gets-hsupa-not-from-att/
It should work for you since I tried it on my gingerbread and it worked, but my gingerbread was not OTA so I don't know what will happen for you.
TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK
Thanks!
The 1.87 was the radio I was looking for. I am a little bit nervous about using rsd to flash the radio (nervous like a bad girl in church but from what I have read it isn't a problem since I am not trying to flash a whole build. Later on when I get my courage up I will try it.
Thanks again,
Ron
update
Flashed the radio to my gingerbread ota (unlocked and rooted) using rsd lite 5.0 and no problems or hard bricking!!! I will try the radio out for awhile and perhaps it will fix my problem. I was on pins and needles while it was rebooting. If I need to go back to the current radio I have a zip that can be installed with cwm..
Thanks again,
Ron

HTC Jewel GPS Fix

***Pre warning***
Turning your phone s-off gives you a chance of bricking your phone. I am not responsible if you try these steps and have problems. Also you will loose all your data as you will be wiping your phone multiple times. Make sure to backup all your data (I used Titanium backup) OK?! :good:
I had done a ton of research trying to fix the GPS on my HTC Jewel and never found a solution that worked. Issue was the GPS would not lock. I was originally running MeanRom, then JellyBam, and finally switched to CM10.1 nightly builds, all with no GPS. Last night though I finally fixed it and wanted to post this for anyone else having this problem.
Prior to last night here is how my phone was setup:
S-On
Hboot 1.19
Radio 1.12.11.0890
CM10.1 20130224
I saw that HTC released a new update, and started digging on how to update when on a custom ROM. I realized that I needed to go s-off which I had tried last year with LazyPanda, but it failed.
Last night I was able to go S-Off following directions from FacePalm: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2163013
It was a lot easier than DirtyRacoon and I'm running Win7x64 which DirtyRacoon says is not supported by them.
Once I was s-off I downloaded the latest Radio 1.12.11.1210 from: http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?13192-RADIOS-RECOVERY-FLASHABLE-Jewel-Radio-Collection
I confirmed that the radio upgraded successfully and rebooted. I was then prompted to activate my phone, and when I tried to activate it gave me the error that I was not authorized! With some help from the FacePalm IRC channel I was pointed to having to flash stock to be able to re-activate and then flash again back to your custom ROM.
I downloaded and flashed with Stock_Rooted_Deodexed_2.13.651.1 found here http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?14585-ROM-Kernel-2-13-651-1-Stock-Rooted-Based-on-Latest-OTA-(Odexed-and-Deodexed)
Booted and re-activated, and confirmed GPS working! Then I re-flashed with CM10.1 20130228 and GPS was still working!
I hope this helps others as I have seen a lot of forums with people complaining about the HTC Jewel GPS and saying it's faulty hardware, unfixable, or their fixes are all in app software related.
Thanks!
One thing that I would like to add is if you go stock, do NOT turn off your GPS after you get a lock. I usually have GPS turned off to save battery, but it was the reason why the new ROMs couldn't get a signal.
So to recap
1. Go back to stock
2. Get any old signal even for just a second
3. Immediately flash your new ROM without turning off GPS
4. Enjoy
This indeed works.
I don't like Sense-Based ROMs, so the first thing I did after getting my Jewel was S-Off, and I'm running AOKP. The GPS was driving me crazy, and I couldn't figure out how to get it working.
I updated my radio, flashed a sense-based ROM, locked GPS, then reverted back to AOKP, and it works flawlessly!
This method works!
Is this really a fix? You described how to s-off and go back to a stock Rom. Are you saying that custom roms don't lock fast enough, if so I've experienced this too. I don't see how going back to stock then flashing a custom Rom would fix that.
The way I fixed the problem before was to flash back to sense, clear maps data and flash back to CM10.1. VoilĂ
I use waze

The only reason you have to go back to stock is to re-activate your phone.
