Afternoon all,
First of all I would like to point out I am a complete Android noob I make no secrets about it, have been a iPhone user for a few years with Blackberrys prior to that, so everything is new to me.
I decided to opt for the SGS2 for my newest phone upgrade and after a week or so of use the battery was terrible (holding only 6-7h max). I read through endless threads on rooting/custom ROMs and the likes and decided to try VillianROM 1.4, to help improve the battery.
Managed to sucsessfully install it with no major dramas.
However, I think I may have the wrong CFroot kernal installed. After installing the villianrom, one of the last parts is to update the root kernal, it stated to use XWKF2. mine currently states:
Baseband version - I9100XXKF2
Kernal Version - 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE7-CL215725
Is this correct?? If not can someone point me in the direction where to download the correct kernal.
The phone is working fine at the moment and the battery is vastly better compared to how it was. I have noticed a problem with the music player, it seems to crash mid way through songs and re-boot, has anyone else had this issue? or could it be as a result of the incorrect kernal?
Thanks in advance,
Shakey
p.s - loving my Android experience so far and dont think ill be going back to Apple any time soon
I would leave well enough alone if its working .
However the VR rom instructions say .
If you are installing from another ROM, or stock ROM, you need to be using the CF-Root kernel, as applicable for your current ROM. You can find CF-Root and
instructions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1103399
When using this ROM, I suggest the XWKF2 CF-Root kernel, from post 4 of Chainfire's thread.

Thanks for the quick reply jje.
It does seem to be working fine, apart from the music player issue, ill put XWKF2 on and see if that fixes the issue.

OK. I have searched and searched. And I cannot post in Development forum yet. My i9100 was rooted using CFRoot. That installed an app called CWM. It is not the same as ROM Manager found in the market. Since then I have wiped and installed Cognition S2 rom and I do not have the CWM.apk that came with CFRoot. Looked all over online and all I keep getting pointed to is the CFRoot thread or threads talking about Rom Manager. Can someone link me to / upload the CWM that comes with CFRoot?

Cognition S2 doesnt come with CF-Root kernel. To get the CWM app back you need to flash the CF-root kernel.
thanks for the link it will be useful
I have installed BAtista70 with angelom kernel
can I use this app to reflash CF root kernel or odin as the first time i rooted my phone ?
hey guys does anyone have a mirror for this ?? i don't want to get this just off of any site i want to make sure it's the real deal... we should be very careful with these apps.
Attached is CWM Manager flashable zip (please change the ext. PDF to Zip - I changed it due to upload policy here)
and check wheather this one is flashable for your ROM, this was downloaded from Checkrom Kitchen for the FW version XWLA4

If you had reflashed the cfroot kernel from chainfires post, it would have put cwm manager on there for you mate.

I meant the Policy here in my workplace not XDA, XDA allows me to upload zip files
i'm staying with the stock rom (for now @ least until i figure out why i loose wifi), and entropy's DD for kernel...as otherwise my wifi goes bye bye... i just updated the modem to the uckk6 or uchk6, and i'm getting astonishing results with that modem in the chicagoland area... and i didn't loose wifi... now i tried to upgrade to the latest android version but then the wifi goes bye bye again.
p.s. i used entropy's recovery to stock quite a few times as i've used something from another forums and wifi bye bye (that same thing is posted on xda-dev as a tutorial)... so this was the only way to fix it that worked... and for some reason the only kernel that doesn't disable wifi is entropy's Daily Driver. anyways so i'm not sure why i didn't get the CMW.apk installed on my galaxy s2. hopefully this one will work. I think it's just my n00bness to custom roms that makes the WiFi disappear, hopefully i will get some more knowledge soon.
so basically my system now looks like this:
Android Version: 2.3.4
Baseband: i777UCKK6
Kernel: 2.6.35.7
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.UCKH7
*** [ just the modem changed. when i go to latest android version i loose wifi ] * signatures: disabled in CMW
I also found another link for CMW.apk on the forums (different section) but of course it uses multiupload and it's not working.
p.p.s. another n00b question. do you guys think it would be safe for me to use a rom or will it disable the wifi again ?... and which rom would you suggest, something like entropy512 is using stock rom that is scrubbed from b/s... or maybe a different one, but i don't want to loose wifi as i'm on 2GB limited plan and that goes fast without wifi...
any suggestions.
Sorry but I think I forgot to say thank you to all the people who replied.

hello all,
Before I being, i searched a bit in this forum and in web. But the questions i have still are not answered.
I on KE2 stock ROM. i have an unbranded SGSII. I have rooted using steps mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
I want to install any of the custom Roms or the newer ROMS mainly because the battery usage sucks. with some hour music and calls battery get drained easily.
I dont mind updating to latest stock ROM also as long as it solves the problem.
Kies dose not offer me an upgrade and its also grayed out for some reason
Here is my SGSII specs
Code:
Product Code: GT-I9100LKADBT (From RegEdit)
PDA: I9100XWKE2
Phone: I9100XXKDJ
CSC: I9100OXXKE2
Baseband: I9100XXKDJ
If I have some problem, I want to revert back to Stock rom before giving it to Samsung. I have also ordered a USB Jig. It should be on the way now. So i can reset the counter as well.
Before flashing, I want to know what all i should do. Is it just fine If i flash the firmware file? Also in Samfirmware i see something called pit files.
can anyone help me in flashing the correct rom?
thank you
All Custom ROM's give detailed installation instructions in the first couple of posts.
For what it's worth, having tried a number of different ROM's, VillainRom 1.4 has the best battery for me. 2 days with moderate use.
+ Villian rom but read and understand the instructions before you start .
jje
Cognition S2 is a good rom, full instructions for flashing.
If you look in the android development section, theres also a thread with all stock firmwares, kernals and tutorials for flashing
thank you all.
I was wondering about how to revert back in case of some problem. Also do I need to take care something about the baseband etc?
I am kind of new so thats what makes me tensed! I dont want to screw up the mobile.
Don't worry, once you have USB jib, you can reset Odin flash counter and this is a safe way to rescue you in case of brick.
In terms of baseband, ke4 or kf2 are the best ones. Kf2 kernel + kf2 base band is a good combination. You can try many ones and choose by yourself.
On xda, there are all stock firmware to rollback if needed.
Take a look at the stock rom and branded roms post in Dev section find your phone and download a copy of the rom.
That can be flashed back via Odin to original state wiping any root and stock roms .

How about ROM Manager ? i read that It can install ROMS over air
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-koushikdutta-rommanager-nptD.aspx
Don't use that as far as know. My kernel wasn't supported and it took me days before my recovery mode was working as I wanted. Maybe it works with other kernels, but with my bad experience thus far I don't install that again.

You think I can install ROMS with this? no more Odin?
No this is a little bit more complicated. You need a rom compatible with this like cognition seemed to add. The main idea is to have a rom compatible with rom manager and this will allow you to change to another rom compatible with this. Unfortunately, there are not so many custom rom... Perhaps sicopat's one?
I justed wanted to say that rom manager is not dangerous to install and even to launch.
OK Thank you,
But I am still confused If i need to update the modem etc. Let me do some more search
You can upgrade modem version by Odin flash mode separately to the rest.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950
Just download a modem.bin file or gets it from a complete firmware by unzip.
Put modem.bin into phone area of Odin and start accordingly of normal flash processing.
Thanks bgn9000
MY whole worry is whether to update modem or not. I dont want to mess with my phone as i think there is no downgrade.
Looks like I have to invest more time in understanding this flashing
Hi All,
My first post here. Yay!!
I have SGS2 and wanted to have latest and greatest. Spend few days reading this forum and got reasonable understanding of root, kernel, rom and firmware. I've even update my phone from XWKDD to XXKI3 non-wipe Frankenstein version and updated kernel to stock XXKI3 as well. I also then updated rom to VillianROM 3.0 which is very new and has 2.3.5 in it.
All working great and haven't bricked the phone.
However, I am bit confused and was hoping you guys could clear up my confussion.
Basically what I want to know is, does ROM include Kernel?
If so, did I updated my kernel when I flashed VillainROM?
If someone could explain what has happened when I did below.
1. Flashed XWKDD insecure kernel and rooted the phone using superoneclick.
2. Few days later, flashed XXKI3 non-wipe firmware (pda, modem & csc all in one).
3. Flashed XWKDD insecure kernel and rooted phone using superoneclick.
4. Flashed kernel to stock XXKI3 to remove yellow triangle, phone is still rooted.
5. Flashed VillainROM 3.0
Hope I've asked questions correctly, if not forgive me, its only my first post here.
Every rom uses different kernels, now your phone is using the kernel that comes with Villain rom. If you are not happy with the kernel that you are using now you can download one from forums then change it by flashing it using cwm.

So, in my phone I no longer have KI3 stock kernel but instead "inphetamine2.0.5" kernel which is used in Villainrom 3.
will lookup bit more on this kernel to understand what it has to offer.
thanks for information.

Villain 3 is your rom and Ninpethamine 2.0.5 is your rom. I would suggest that you change your kernel to newer version to Ninphetamine 2.1.3 . Go to kernel forums in xda and read some more and you can get more info about all other kernels and you will find performances of each kernels.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I updated kernel as per your suggestion to Ninphetamine 2.1.3, all appears to be ok and didn't find any difference. Well, I am not that techie and my requirements are mostly basic so won't notice much difference but I am sure it is better then previous version.
Thanks for your help.
Theh were using 2.0.5 with VR rom and according to them its more stable and battery friendly. You can monitor it and if you find it better or 2.0.5 better you can always flash it back.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Basically the ROM developper chooses the kernel that he finds more suitable to his ROM and loadsit with the ROM. You can change the kernel if you want after flashing the ROM. For me, I like the cf root KI3 v4.2 kernel (stock kernel), but if you want to overclock or undervolt you'll need a custom kernel (don't know if nimphetamine can UC/UV, I think it can, if not there are other great options too).
The thing I found with the cf root kernel is that for users that don't know how to undervolt or do most advanced stuff (me included) it has better battery life. Or at least for me the cf root kernel showed the best battery life. At the end, the best is to try various kernels and see which is best for you.
Hi...

Am from india having this SGS II (GT - I9100) I updated the stock 2.3.3 to 2.3.6 by odin method after using the guidance in xda and rooted it using super user So far so good Now the thing is i searched the forum for 2days relating to this but couldn get any clear idea :
I want Voodoo LOUDER in my mob. I dunno which kernal supports it and whether any kernal has this inbuilt. Also i would be grateful if some1 tells me/ gives link to install such kernal
Btw wats the diff bet ROM and kernal ?
Plz help.. Thanks in adv..
Hi, welcome.
I don't know about every kernel but Voodoo louder definitely works for me on chainfires KK5 cfroot kernel and also on the experimental cm9.
More info can probably be obtained from the voodoo louder thread.
In layman's terms...
Firmware is all the stock software on your device.
A Rom for our purposes is a custom firmware compilation that has been modified in various ways to add or remove functionality. All are different.
A kernel is the basic operating system or brains of the device.
Im sure others will give you a more detailed explanation.
Good luck with it all.

SiyahKernel supports Vodoo Louder.
^ Yep, Siyah, SpeedMod K19, CF and Stock kernels are supported.
If I can read English right then Supercurio recommended Stock kernel.
Swyping from my GT-I9100 via Tt
I am currently using Siyah kernel latest version and then bought the voodoo Louder app from market. Download siyah and you should be fine. Regarding rom and kernel combination...Not going to tell you as you have to make your own mind regarding what is best....So many roms read have a look and you decide..Always read the first pages and then last ten pages to get a feel what people think of the rom...That way you can make your mind up.
Good luck anyway
Speedmod, NEAK kernel, Siyah, CF-root kernels( dont try it though since you are already rooted) are few kernels that support voodoo...but anyway il keep an eye on this thread to see how you get on

what's a kernal?
The kernel in android is the linux kernel, it contains various drivers like the display, camera, bluetooth, wifi etc etc. its sort of the interface between the hw and the sw,
According to the changelog, VLouder should work with any kernel now.
Hi, I have Sensation 2 by Crisis on my SGS2 and Voodoo Louder says that its broken/incompatibile kernel. Can I install another kernel for this rom? I like it much so i dont want to change it :/
Yes but a kernel is going to be not the same but you probably wont notice the difference .
jje
So it doesnt matter if it be NEAK or smth?
Hi, I am from Germany and cant download Voodoo Louder from the market. It is not available in my country.

Hello,
I am currently running GINGERBREAD.BVKL1, 2.6.35.7-I9100BVKL1-CL774645 and want to reflash kernel using CF-ROOT.
I am reading Chainfire's thread, and at this post I can find the closest match to my kernel being CF-Root-SGS2_XW_INU_KL1-v5.0-CWM5.zip.
Chainfire also mentions: KL1 (GB): Untested
I'm wondering if this is still the case, considering that this was posted on the 30th of May 2011.
So anyone out there running CF-ROOT KL1?
Yup, I was asking myself the same question because I used Kies to update to 2.6.35.7 BVKL1 and lost root. Obviously zergrush failed and i checked for insecure or rooted kernels. However I don't think the KL1 (GB) has anything to do with this version.
Any help would be apreciated.

Ive been using the XW_INU_KL1 kernel in my phone for a while now with no problems at all.The kernel is now well and trully tested and is even included in my ROM.If it wasnt fully tested the dev wouldnt have put it in there so its perfectly safe to flash. As far as if its the correct kernel or not you only have to read the thread by Chainfire. As with any kernel the most important part are the last 3 digits. If your kernel ends in KL1 then its the correct one to use.
EDIT:Just thought Id let you know that my root kernel (XWKL1) is also 2.6.35.7 so the fact that you have "BV" doesnt matter.

Thanks for sharing! Just reflashed minutes ago using XW_INU_KL1 also via Odin, gained root without problems and then unlocked my carrier block via Helroz's Galaxy S Unlock. Everything went smoothly.
I'm downloading now the 'original' stuff, it's good to have.
Is there any certain reason to reflash the 'original'? Besides getting rid of the yellow triangle. I'm guessing that KIES upgrades will also work with XW_INU_KL1. And I'm under the impression that my phone is a little bit faster with this kernel.
Good to see everything went well.Downloading the original stuff is just personal choice. You can flash any firmware you want, test it,change it,flash carrier branded and non carrier branded firmwares until you find what you like as each different firmware has a different modem.Good idea to get rid of the triangle if you dont have a usb jig just in case you want to send it away.Your new original F/W will have the modem being used in your area for best speed and conectivity so if you can be rooted on that F/W then better still.Kies will still work but the updates will only work on your BV rooted version.
Roger that. Thank you again, much appreciate it.

Just a little revive.
Because it has been reported to me that sometimes I cannot be heard by the other person while talking, I have decided to also flash the original kernel from intratech. From what I understand, Firmware and Kernel should have matching versions.
I wanted to ask you if:
1. you reflashed from CWM or via Download mode?
2. do you still have CWM after reflashing this stock kernel?
Thanks.
Friendly bump. I tried to contact cerberus1405 but haven't had success.
So if anybody else can answer my questions. It doesn't matter if it's about KL1 kernel or another one.
I guess you didn't manage to search in the past week then? Kernel is unlikely to have any impact on call quality, only modem.
1). If you want to flash a stock kernel, you can do it several ways and there's no difference in outcome.
2). No, if you flash a stock kernel, you will lose CWM recovery.
If those are not the questions you wanted asking then you'll have to be more specific.

usualy CWM works with CF-Root kernels. In my case CWM detected that I was running a different kernel and warned me about some features disabled. The app appears functional but haven't tried it yet.

I was thinking to use odin + ClockworkMod-Recovery. This method it's not ok ?
Thank you for your answer.
Hi,
I used Odin and CF-Root XW_KL1 kernel.
I have kept these links http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399, try to find a matching kernel there.
This method incremented the flash counter to 1 (and when I boot the phone I get the warning triangle), but I don't quite really care anymore about it.
It's been a while since I flashed and I can say that it is stable.
I have a usb jig so hopefully no triangle and counter 0.
Thx
