Hi iam new to all this, and i try to read so mmany things that i can, but not all is easy to find.
1: When you port a rom from 1 phone 2 another, how do they do it, why is there so many problems with diff aps? If i see CM they seem to get things to work on diff models at the same time, why is that?
2: What does 9 png mean i know that png is a picture extension.
3: Why is it from what i read a pain in the *** to remake aps to another phone
4: I use the new rom with sence 2.1, i really love it, but i would like to remove the names on my aps/shortcuts (forgot the real word for it) like you can in adw launcher, is this possible and how.
Thx in advance, for this site and hopefully answers
Brian DK
As far as I know the hardest thing to do in order to make a custom ROM work is to make all the drivers working. They are usually developed by the hardware manufacturer and are available only as binaries so it is not so simple to make all the system work perfectly.
I know this explanation may not be complete, but I hope I have clarified the basis at least.
Thx, it was what i fugured, so thx for answer
The problems with remaking apps is they are usually for a phone with a higher resolution,so things dont fit properly
Ha ha... you can go read what ogo2 have been doing with the salsa rom on dev side to see what happening. I've been following that thread for quite some time.
Give his rom a test drive. Best way to know this issue is to experience it.
About rename or no name on app, I think it's a launchers function. I just learn that you can rename or leave the short cut blank in "go launcher ex"

***WELCOME***
Welcome everyone who has a question, but just can't seem to find an answer. My hope is that this thread will reduced the extremely large number of new threads being created for every little issue each user is having. The rules are very simple. Please follow them, as it's just not that hard.
1) Absolutely NO FLAMING. I am completely inflexible on this rule. If i catch you do it, you will get an xda vacation (will be banned, in case you don't get it). Also, just to be clear, "use the search function" is not an acceptable answer in this thread.
2) Before you post you MUST read THIS. Trust me, I will know if you didn't.
3) Anyone can post any issue they're having with their HTC Espresso: myTouch 3G Slide in this thread, but you MUST include a detailed description of your issue. If after a couple days your issue has not been addressed, please feel free to bump it.
4) Remember you are asking for help, and as the saying goes "it's easier to catch flies with honey than vinegar. So be nice to those who are helping you.
5) Please quote the person you are replying to, it will make it MUCH easier for people to sort through the many messages that will end up in here.
6) If you find your Question answered, find your original Post and change the font colour of the text into dark green. And at the bottom of the question post either provide a link to the answer or Quote the answer,
This way it can be easier for any moderator to delete Clutter so the thread can be easily searched and read by other users.
This is an experiment based on a suggestion by other users, so we will see how it goes. If all goes well then i hope that this thread will be a great help to many new members. If not then we will make adjustments. I want to thank all those who will be contributing to this forum for their time in advance.
Note: If you feel your thread has been moved here in error, please PM me and politely ask me to move the related posts back into the original thread. Sometimes the wrong threads get moved here by accident. Please also provide a clear explanation of why you think this topic deserves it's own thread. Angry tirades and rants will be of no use, and will more likely than not simply get you a warning or a ban.
Also if you dont have something important to say and your just going to complain then dont post.
great thoughts, also congrats on mod status sir

people are postcounting up... nothing happened yet today, so until something does, it may as well be locked to stop people just upping postcount

I agree it has gone off topic a little bit, But when nothing new is happening and people just want to add there 2cents then that happens. I will keep an eye on it though. I know the 3 Devs working on getting Root are working there butts off to do it and I have faith we will see it.
The good thing is, it seems rooting is not a matter of "if", just "when", which I never have a problem with.
i just hope that the "when" is "sooner" rather than "later" because im getting "pissed" about this "bloatware" >.<
Wifi Tether, apps to sd, froyo 2.2?
So now that root has happened I know a lot of us are interested in added functionality of our devices. So far mine is stock but with live wallpapers and some free'd up memory. However, I'd like to use wifi tether, apps to sd, and preferably get froyo 2.2 on here. My question is do we have a lot of devs working toward this now or is it too soon after root? I don't mean to seem impatient here and I understand there is still a lot of focus on getting everyone to the point of root since it was difficult for most of us. Anyway, any status update or something would be nice.

Thank you!
Personally i know of 5 or 6 devs working on projects for the slide... If I remember correctly, another couple are going to start on it very soon also
Not sure if this is a dumb question... When the G1 was rooter, shortly after other methods of rooting were found. I fear some of us will endlessly have the problem of getting ADB to recognize the device in recovery. What are the chances of another root method coming available for the Slide?
if an update comes out, there will be more methods im sure... just not sure on a timeline for them

Fermunky, I've been following your problem because I was having it too. What finally got it for me was, I formated a different sd card, put it in the phone, removed all software ( htc sync, pdanet) and removed all drivers I could find using usbdeview. Then rebooted with phone unplugged, installed pdanet following all their instructions, then the loop worked perfect. Good luck
Tl;dr version, i tried it all at the same time and it worked
Widgets
hey, is it possible for someone to make some of the htc widgets compatible with adw launcher? I have the slidemeroot rom with live wallpapers and like it a lot. However, I miss the variety of widgets such as multiple calendar views now that I have to run adw launcher to get the live wallpapers. I'm looking for a way to get the best of both worlds and have live wallpapers along with the sense widgets. Is it possible? or better yet, get live wallpapers on stock rom without adw launcher so it works with my modes as well (cuz I miss that too). Maybe I just need to give up on the live wallpapers
can we have links to these listed roms?
Can't get superUser on legend to slide
I have been working/searching on the issue for a while and just cant figure it out.
every file is called superuser.apk and I am pretty sure they are all ROM/device specific. I can't get them to install.
Could someone help me with the following:
1. The source for the correct superuser.apk for legendTOslide Please
2. Do I adb push? In recovery? In device mode? sample command?
Thank you

You can get Live Wallpapers to work in ADW Launcher, but the HTC Widgets are bound to Sense UI.
Ok so Google just released another 2.2 update for Nexus. Right now I'm running stock slide rom. Can I update to the Nexus' roms without root?

Hello folks
I want to create live wallpapers for sale on the android market. I found a custom creator script and a lwp creator software that does this but I don't think it signs them. Now I am not sure if those could be sold on the market or not. I am still very new to android.
At the moment I am trying to start small, something simple like a looped animation sequence and make that a live wallpaper...just plain, with no settings. So what would be a good way to approach this mission ?
You could try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739512. You could even try to make them on your phone with this: http://android.ownskin.com/livewallpaper.
Can I sell the apk that I get from custom creator or is there something I need to do before I upload it.

Make sure it's signed.
That's all ? Man thats simple. Here I was readying myself thinking I'm gonna need to brush up my old coding skills. Very nice. Thanks guy.
I would like to pack 2 live wallpapers in one apk. Is this possible ?
No, it's not unless you make an app which will allow selection of whichever one the user wants.
That sucks. I figured I'd provide 2 wallpapers as a pack for $0.99 because they are simple with no settings. There is no other way ?
I suppose I'll start with single ones and then eventually make an app.
Ok so I did some experiments, first apk was 80mb, second was 40mb and the newest one is like 400kb only. But it lags a lot. How do I optimize ?

Have you tried zipaligning them? See here: http://developer.android.com/resources/articles/zipalign.html.
I am just beginning installing eclipse and the steps that follow. I am still not sure how to open the apk to view what the code is. I was hoping I could see this code and then implement it in eclipse using a fresh project. Main thing I want to find out is how the image sequence loading is implemented. I guess I will post back here in a few days.
Should I code this in ICS or get the sdk files for 2.1 and do it on that ?

It depends on what you want. If you only want ICS (and later android versions to come) devices to support your wallpapers, then you can go ahead and code it in ICS. If you want a wider range of support (for now), then your 2nd option is best.
Well ideal case would be its backwards compatible. I've been reading and says ics has new api's...but I'm hoping the wallpaper and related services are backwards compatible. Its okay if its not, I get to learn at least.

It sure does, but most of them are not backward compatible. Notice only a few (approximately 3) apps built for ICS worked on Gingerbread so the chance is very small that they will support backward compatibility. They may be the same services, etc., but many will still require the ICS+ framework.
Interesting...so that means its safer to start from 2.1 for more than just backwards compatibility reasons. I just tried to grab api7 in sdk manager and it gave me error for file not found. Should I do 2.3.3 ?
Fixed it, 2.1 ready to go. Thanks.

I personally felt that it was fine as is, very simple and straightforward however, if you could make the Root script Unroot too, that would be interesting. Though i have no wants to unroot so i do not know how the process differs from rooting it (i.e. is doable through batch files) so it is even capable of being done that way. My 2 cents for what they are worth.
Also, do not take this as it can't be improved upon as everything can, however even if you didn't it would be fine as is.

I already released a unroot one click app. :|
I think it's fine as is. It's easy enough to understand, once you get everything working properly.
I love the root script it eliminated some force close issues on my device. I was wondering since roms are not avaiable if their could be custom scripts. Maybe a super custom script with three keyboard choices a choice of launchers replaced stock email, stock keyboard, gallery, wallpapers, homecatcher and other enhanced apps. I don't know if this is a direction you want to go just throwing it out there. It might help some new users. Also I dont know if its possible to have shortcuts like any cut has incorperated for debug keyboard and application menus that are hidden. Again just thinking outloud so if this sounds like a big pile of suck please just ignore and move on.

When I ran the script, the last part of nookandzergy that put on a custom keyboard didn't work. So I just reset and did the root with saying no to custom keyboard and it worked fine.
I like your idea. I ran the script in the original thread and it said it was successful. But the android market is hinky. It took dforever to register my device, and now it crashes as soon as it is launched. I did a factory reset, still have the same problem. Is there a way to tell for sure that the root was succesfu,. Thanks btw for your hard work on this. It is greatly admired.
Would it help resolve the driver issue that a lot (me) have had?
Dude thats strictly a windows problem. I swear, trying to get this thing detected properly on windows 7/xp was one of the most frustrating adroid rooting experiences I've ever had. After 3 hours f screwing around with the windows method, I switched to Ubuntu linux and had it rooted in 30 min.
I thought you script was fine as is, this is my first Android device and first experience Rooting and everything seems to be working fine. Thanks

Spoken like a true developer. You craft a thing of beauty and continue to be drawn to making it even cooler.
I don't know if you should rewrite the script or not but I like your attitude!
I decided to not rewrite it to have a numbered menu as that wouldn't go with my idiot pproof batch scripting habits so instead, I added new features yesterday and today.

hello guys just set up dxsidia android kitchen not sure if anyone uses this but i have a few questions and since dxsidia does not support this anymore was hoping someone could answer them for me...
1. is the major obvious one does it work on the photon in the thread it does say unconfirmed for atrix but nothing on photon?
2.after creating the work folder i go into advanced options and start editing? i realize since there is nothing on the photon most of my answers are probably going to be try and see but no harm in asking right...
3.it has a set of pluign scripts labeled sgs2/ sgs these are for samsung galaxy s right so i dont want to use any of them?
4. there is a task killer tweak you can add from it what exactly is this?
5. add data/app functionality??? lets you add or remove apps??? not sure is why im asking
there are more q's but i figured if i can get these answered im doing good
ive read the thread for a few days now and seems simple but confusing at same time seems like its a one click type thing but if you dont know for sure what you are clicking can really screw up and have to start from scratch... anywho trying to do more around here and would appreciate any help anyone has thanks a ton
1) Yes in terms of an apk is an apk. No in terms of the updater script (IIRC)
2) Yes, assuming theres options in the advanced menu you'd like to impliment
3) You don't need the Samsung plugins.
4) Changes minfree settings in the boot image. Be aware the ICS impliments memory handling differently than previous versions.
5) Adds a script and folder for data/app partition so you can include optional apps. Optional apks (things like nascar for example) could be placed in here and would be installed on flash. But because they are in /data, the user has the option to uninstall through manage apps.
Personal Opinion: While the kitchen may be a convienient way to do things, it leaves little (Read: No) room for learning. Assuming you'd like to create a body of work to be publically distributed and not just for personal use, it might be worth the upfront investment in figuring out how to do/script this stuff yourself. That's not me trying to be an elite a-hole, that's me giving solid advice.
Cheers!
Yeah im a trying to learn as much as i can ive been reading and reading and reading have always known about the kitchen just never tried it thanks for the response you didnt come off as elitest is all good i find its easier for me to learn by trying things while reading about it granted i do research in great lengths not just in xda but other forums, blogs, links so on and so on before even downloading these tools but as i said it seems to sink in better when i can go ok i use this option this what it means thats what it did this what its supposed to do/look like
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
So ive been trying all day to spit out a rom with the kitchen and no matter what i do it doesnt install either get status 7 or 0 says was looking for 4agrs but only found 3 and sometimes says 3args but only found 2 ive tried using a rom i know flashes and just running it through the kitchen and flashing the output... idk what im doing wrong but starting to think it is not photon compatible any insider tips? i know i already asked this but not quite ready to surrender to defeat on this yet and i REALLY dont want to install linux or ubuntu on my computer would have to partition it and just not to keen on doing that to the family computer my kids and wife play on it almost more than i do
Hey guys, I have a few questions. I looked around a bit before posting this, but I may have missed some stuff so if I need to remove this thread just let me know that I should have looked harder(and kindly provide a link please).
First I would like to know how to get into "Themeing". I want to know how to change the colors mostly. I can usually find the file I need to edit in order to change the icon shape, but If I'm not mistaken, the colors are probably controlled in an xml file. They may all look for a "central file" that contains the colors, or I may need to change each one individually. If there is a central file could someone help me find out what it is.
I have only found how to edit apps, so here's where I get a major case of the noobs. Are the system colors controlled by the launcher or the theme or is there a UI that can be edited what do I need to do. I want to be able to change the number styles, the fonts of the keyboard, and all that jazz. The most important thing, though; is that I need to be able to change the colors. I really don't have an issue with the current fonts and don't have a good idea what to replace them with anyway.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now that the above train wreck is over I have some harder questions.
I also want to get into developing. I will probably start by modifying someone else's. (side question, could I re-release theirs with my changes just so that people could test it provided I ask and give them credit. I know this depends on the person, but is it taboo, or just a no for some people) I already read through and followed shrike1978's. It was possibly the best thing that could have happened to me. It showed me that it was actually possible to do for someone with less android experience. (link)
But after I have built it what do I need to do to get started modifying it? I'm not even sure what all I want to do, but is there any suggestions of a starter project, as well as a how to do it?(maybe changing the launcher, or something like that)
Also I have been using xfce linux mint on a second hard drive of 75 gigs. Will this be an ok setup? Should I switch to ubuntu although I don't really like it as much?
Should I be s-off or on (maybe on so that I know that they will be supported)? Also is there any good vm's that run in linux and will run android?
I probably missed a few questions that I intended to ask, so I will edit them in when needed.
I plan to make a how to thread on my findings(hopefully good enough shrike gives me a :highfive: for doing a good job) so everyone who helps (provided I actually learn how and am capable of making the how to) will be thanked in my future famous thread
Also I apologize for any miss-types. I will do my best to correct them, but my keyboard is pretty broken (it took a tumble when I moved home for winter break)
I figured out the fonts(at least for the few roms I checked). They are easy to change and add. They are controlled in a system_fonts.xml in the "\system\etc" folder of the rom. The files that they represent are in the "\system\fonts" folder of the rom. The xml file has a pretty good explanation of how it is read, so adding your own should be pretty easy.
If anyone here has any suggestions even if you dont know for sure let me know please.;
