[Q] Phone went into shock - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am/was running evil fascinate 3.6 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1035420) and touchwiz otb realoaded 1.6 kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011626)
i wasn't overclocking too high or doing anything weird whatsoever. out from no where my phone froze, so i did three button method to get it to reboot, and then it got stuck on the SAMSUNG screen. after battery pull, nothing. What do i need to do to fix this?
[EDIT] nvm for now. i odin'd the cmw recovery and it's working for now.

Go here and follow the directions to a tee..all the links you will need are in the first post..it may be overkill but if your phone truly is borked this will get it working but back to stock and you will have to reinstall your rom again.
my phone freezes when I overclock too much and I just pull the batt instead of three finger booting but I have never had a problem with it not booting after a freeze..that's how I find out how much overclock I can handle!
I keep clocking higher and higher and running
Quadrant, using the camera and a few other things to really load the cpu and I do this until it freezes
Then I turn it down one setting and retry to load the cpu to get it to freeze until it stops.
Anyways the link below may be overkill but it will get your phone back and, if you try to over clock again and it freezes you should be able to just pull the batt and re insert..good luck! I hope you get your phone back.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124391

Thank you! I ended up doing just that and it did what I needed it to do!

[Q] JI6 OTA zip Roms and Kernels?

Total NOOB here, but I get confused on all the posts.
At one point I ran the Eugene's Vibrant4 rom with one RyanZA's one click lag fix on the one click root.
I ended up going back to stock and waiting for the JI6 OTA. I got impatient and downloaded the JI6 OTA zip from ttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=802240
Now I'm just running that on an unrooted Vibrant. I was wondering what is the best Kernel / Rom / LagFix to go with after this update? Are there any yet for the version listed in the link as it is not the leaked version of JI6? (having a hard time deciphering Roms and kernels for leak vs OTA JI6)
Also I have the larger nand chip according to the post here ttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8322865&postcount=131
I was wanting to try the JAC XMOD ttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=791478
or the kingklick ttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787410 but I don't wanna mess up my phone, I'm poor as heck and need my phone.
I also want to speed up my phone if at all possible and maybe lengthen battery life... (might be asking too much lol )
Any posts appreciated, and yes I know I'm noob!
yes you might be asking too much. I am currently running Simbionix 1.7 with jac's kernel with voodoo on the J12 modem O/C to 1.2. You will instantly see the speed of your phone increase.
I flashed the J12 modem because its supposed to give you increased battery life. After following the instruction on reconditioning the battery, It still wasn't that great even though others are reporting great battery life. I am going for broke and flashing Bionix 1.7 w/Jacs OC/UV/VOODOO kernel w/ the J16 modem tonight.
First step is rooting your phone with the one click root program and try them all out if you like. Its hard to mess up this phone as you can always flash back to stock with Odin. Even there is a few bugs with Sim1.7 its still a great rom and will be using it this till Froyo is released.
ok, thanks badaphooko01. I guess I will try the Jacs but not sure if I should be trying the voodoo version cause of the larger nand chip.
Ok so I had installed the one click root and Rom Manager, used them to load the Bionix 1.7 w/Jacs OC/UV/VOODOO kernel w/ the J16 modem even tho I see that voodoo is disabled due to my nand chip...and I haven't bought the SetCPU app yet.
Seems like my battery life went up huge even though I haven't yet reconditioned the battery. It was too late to finish after I loaded the rom, had to sleep for work. I figured I would recondition tonight but as it's going I may not need to.
This rom DOES help battery life and it sped up my phone so I am truly happy with it.
Thanks for the input.
Side note, I haven't noticed any freezes or reboots yet due to not having setCPU installed. But I also haven't had time to get all the apps I had previously back on my phone either. :/

You shouldn't be getting freezes or reboots at all. The only way I could see that happening is if you installed SetCPU and set the minimum clock speed below 200MHz. Right now without SetCPU installed you are running on the stock speeds of 200min / 1000max which should be fine.

Makes sense now, thanks for the info, I was thinking the rom oc'd the processor by script or something, now I can stop worrying lol.

Phone suddenly froze and won't boot back up.

Well...phone's been working great. Got Nero 5 and the DoW 1.4ghz kernal on it and I love it. The past 3-4 days days, it's been freezing periodically...but maybe only 2-3 times a day, if that.
Today, when I woke up, it froze on me. I pulled the battery and turned it back on and it just hangs at the DoW screen...
...wtf...
It won't go to recovery, it won't boot, it just sits at the DoW screen...that's it.
Anyone else had this happen before?
Lol maybe you fried some hardware. Overclocking to unstable speeds is such a good idea! The freezing should have been your first indication that it was time to go back to a stock kernel.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
umm can you get into download mode?
and yeah OC'ing IS dangerous specially 1.4... if your going to OC do it at 1.2 its fast and stable.
if you can get into downoadmode, then you can fix it. but if not, you probably did fry your hardware.
just flash differenbt kernel
go in to recovery and wipe cache partitiion it will vipe any overclocking you have done and will reset it to default
It actually did come back on...took about an hr though. If it does any more weirdness, back to a 1.2 kernel I go...
you should downloadS ETCPU and lower frequency of the cpu to 1ghz or w.e is stable if it freeze again go wipe cache partiton or factory reset ether one will help .

I have SetCPU and, honestly, I think the problem wasn't that I was running it too high. I used to run it at 800 mhz to try to save battery since DoW DESTROYS the battery at 1.4ghz (DoB maybe?...lol) and I'm not doing that any more. I'm running it 1ghz - 1.4ghz now. We'll see how it goes.
Thanks all!!
lol it will freeze again , take my word for it
YOU ARE BETTER OFF DOWNLOADING DRAGON KERENEL 3.2.1 AND IT ACTUALLY WILL SAVE YOUR BATTERY ONE THING DIFFERENT IS DOW KERNEL OVVERCLOCKS YOUR GPU ALSO , helped ?
Hey zuse, just use the stock kernel. I'm glad to hear it is working again, but just play it safe from now on.

Did you pull battery and leave out and press power button a couple times to discharge for sure and make sure not plugged into USB while doing that then put it all back together and see if it responds.
What Kernel did you try and flash?
Ok i just got back from att. They exchanged it cuz couldnt prove i did anything wrong since screen was permanently black. I did do what you suggested tho with no success. I had flashed a gsm kernel like a dumba$$ from rootz. Think ill be staying stock awhile.

Are you sure you just didn't overclock too much? It can only go to 1.83 on most phones and remain stable.

Phone freezing up at boot

I'm starting to have some serious issues lately, now I can't even boot my phone up without it freezing up at the samsung s animation. I have tried to odin back to stock eh03 and it passes and I goto boot up for the first time and it keeps getting stuck either at the animation or the verizon animation. I have odin the stock froyo and all the same thing happens. Is it time to try heimdall? I wasn't having any issues last week when I would odin back to stock and I have to admit I have been flashing like crazy lately because I kept freezing up and rebooting for no reason on every rom I have tried even on stock froyo, gb, ics, tsm, superclean it has been getting terrible lately.
Thanks
when you odin back to stock are you checking repartition and using the atlas pitfile?
yup and ive tried a new sd card, buddy told me to try it. Could it be the cable? But odin does say it passes. I have odined in the past with the same pit and eho3 and didn't have any problems now I just cannot get it to work for whatever reason.
Just got it to boot but freezes up when its running media scanner? Any ideas?
Sounds like it could be an issue with your SD card?
Are you running the phone in an uncommonly warm environment? Put it in the freezer for 2 minutes and try to let it boot in there to see if it's a heat issue

i think you might be on to something, i was able to boot it up before i put it in the freezer and the it ran perfect in there, but it doesn't feel like it is heating up that much, i only really use it inside and really light use. i've had it freeze up in recovery before or when i unlock the phone, im not doing any heavy use at all its just really unstable.
You might unfortunately have a dying phone... Have you tried to tweak voltages at all or use a program that will clock down the processor when a heat threshhold is reached? That might be able to eek out some additional life from it.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
What is the temp where these phones start locking up? To answer your question no I haven't touched any voltages at all. I have noticed too when I start charging is when it gets hot pretty quick and will start rebooting
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
Each SoC is different, but you shouldn't get lockups due to heat from light or normal use. I've had devices get uncomfortably warm without lockups or reboots. Could the phone have gotten damaged somehow or have you overclocked it?
I have dropped it before and its got a small crack and yes I have oc'd it before but never more then 1200mhz as I can recall. Do you think this could be more of a hardware issue?
It certainly sounds like a HW issue if you have already used Odin.
My suggestions would be to use an mtd build as they run lighter and the media scanner isn't quite as intrusive. Use a custom kernel that allow you to tweak voltages to see if maybe some different values are more agreeable to your SoC (this can also be accomplished on bml ROMS). Also, monitor your hardware and see where it starts to have issues with temperature.
I was able to boot up cm7.2. As long as its cold I have no problems with it. This morning I tried to boot it up at room temp and it froze when I unlocked it so I will try to flash a kernel on it and see what happens
What it really sounds like to me is a loose connection. If you don't feel heat from it. But it boots at very cold temps, than maybe the cold is contracting a soldered joint just enough to prevent the phone from dieing. Think of the xbox 360's red ring of death. first it acts funny, sometimes getting lines on the screen and freezing, then eventually red ring of death! The cause in the xbox is the motherboards were soldered in England under a "rohs" compliance. Which means lead free solder. Over time heating and cooling of the solder would crack it and give the red ring of death.
So, I'm not certain. But it sounds like the same thing.

That would not cause this. But you flash it with Odin. You can find one somewhere in the forums.it's highly recommended you have them when using ics roms

here is the gb bootloader...the only thing it does is allow the splash screen to function when running the latest glitch kernel. other than that, does not do much.

Phone acting weird, anyone have a solution?

First of all, my phone is running jellybomb version 2, freeza beastmode kernel 2.0 and cpu running at 2.7. I've never had problems before until one day I downloaded a file that had a virus, so I decided to do a restore using twrp. The restore failed and my phone and it got screwed, I've tried several methods to get it running again and I finally found the solution. I flashed the brickbug file and it was fixed. Now I noticed that sometimes when I restart the phone, it won't restart, it just powers off. There are also times when my phone just blacks out and freezes and I have to do a battery pull. There are also incidents where after boot up from a restart or battery pull, my touch screen won't respond. It's really weird. I dirty flashed to jellybomb version 2 from version 1, I doubt that's the issue since these problems started happening after I flashed brickbug to fix my phone. Anyone know what could be wrong or a fix? It's not a huge issue since my phone works fine most of the time, but it gets a bit annoying when the problem does happen. Last resort would be wipe absolutely everything and start over..

Honestly my phone does the same with occasional random reboots and lock ups requiring battery pulls (Even the power button-menu-power up didn't restart to twrp) and even then restarting doesn't usually go without a hitch. Even when I was running stock root my phone would get stuck at the yellow sprint screen from time to time and I'd have to go TWRP and wipe Dalvik and Cache, then Dalvik again to get it to reboot.. The only reason I didn't unroot was was because even when my phone was new and out of the box, stock it wouldn't reboot cleanly all the time.
It got a little better after the firmware updates but it still hasn't gone away entirely.
I do expect it to get cleared up eventually but for now just take it as a fact of life with this phone.

Sounds like its the beastmode kernel issues. Flash version 1.8 and see if that fixes your issues.
I would run the MJ4 tar via Odin to start totally fresh.
I am having a similar issue. my phone will just reboot on its own and freeze up a lot. i dont think its the kernel because it has been happening ever since i first installed the jellybomb rom and had a lite kernel installed. now switched to beast 2.3 and still having the same issues. im gonna flash 1.8 and see if it gets any better. but people are posting positive results on the 2.3 . dont know what to do. its frustrating

Before going through all that mess, toss on a stock kernel and see if your issues go away. You'll narrow down the issues right quick.

My phone has been doing this from the time i took it out of the box on October 4. It was ever worse then, so much so that I returned the phone exchanged it for a new one. The problems continued and I questioned my decision to upgrade to the Note 3 but then the firmware upgrades improved things a little.
I can tolerate the issues now and I do expect them to go away on future updates

2.3 is the shiz, bro. I know some have issues with it, but for me it far exceeds even 1.8. Even with no overclocking, 1.8 would do odd stuff, like go to off when I'd selected restart (plugged in or not), &c. With 2.3, I've yet to run into any issues, the phone behaves as I've directed it. I overclock it using profiles in SetCPU, and the cores stay cool. With 1.8, no such luck.
As to Internet shutdowns, I have found that the browser plays a role in things. Having never used the stock browser, I switch mainly between boat browser and chrome, and both will occasionally freeze. Long back press to kill is my fallback.

what your describing
Your phones should run flawlessly all the time. I would take issue that when the phone starts acting buggy, it's just normal for this phone.....I disagree with that, there is a issue somewhere if you have these issues occasionally.
Just my 2 cents
Well it took my slack ass a couple weeks to flash the stock kernel due to my issues. and after a few days my phone hasnt randomly rebooted. So i take it my phone is not liking the BEAST right now? This is just some poopoo.
