What phone did you switch from? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey.
After i have been reading this topic, then i though that i could do the same here to see what kind of phones you all have switched from.
I switched from a Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10i to the Samsung Galaxy S II.
And i do NOT regret one millisecond on doing that. It have been the best update i have had ever while having a smartphone. Even when i did not regret on doing it, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 was still a good mobilephone.
So what kind of phone did you switch from?
Please use the poll i added to if you like.

ive switched from sony ericsson xperia x10 mini pro, besides the sound quality that the other phone had better than this one, i wouldnt go back... Sony needs OLED & Dual Cores too

good idea to start a thread like this. could be very interesting.
my previous phone was the htc blackstone, which i bought used off ebay in august 2010, and regretted it shortly after. i should have known, winmo was dead, even before wp7 was released. after playing around with xdandroid on sd card i decided to change to android.
the sgs2 is my first native android phone. it is also the first unused phone that i bought it years and although normally i tend to overthink things which makes getting a new phone a process of months, in which newer and even better phones are released, in the case of the sgs2 i had to become an early adopter, which makes the experience even better. it is the best device on the market right now and i enjoy it every minute of my day and there is still so much to explore. haven't installed 2.3.4 yet, got a usb otg, or an mhl adapter, which will certainly all broaden the features.

I switched from the Nexus One with CyanogenMod 7 and couldn't be happier. I still think the N1 with CM7 is a great smartphone, but the SGS2 is thinner, lighter, and faster with a beautiful big screen. It's better in amost every way and it's a pleasure to use. Yes, there are still a few kinks in the SGS2 software, but I'm sure they'll be resolved in the coming months.

Been using a Blackstone for the last 3 years before i bought the SII, but it sure was a great device. I still have it and its 3 years old battery spanks the hell out of SII's battery. Even though windows mobile is pretty much dead, i still miss it in terms of battery life and a clean system without tons of apps running in the background eating your battery like rodents

HA! So true.

I got my i9000 stolen and in matter of hours i went to the store and got myself a i9100...haha

Well... was a big fan for Sony Ericsson and the way they respond to X10, thought to migrate. I still have X10 and thanks to the members on XDA I used it this far.

I've just sold my Captivate, my SGS2 is arriving in a few days
The Captivate has been my phone for 8 months, and I gotta say it has rocked solid .

Ive switched from Droid!

I switched from Samsung Infuse, I still have it. Up for sale if any one wants it, I want 400$ for it, had it a day over 30 can't return it. I also have an atrix and an iPhone, but happy with the Galaxy S2. iPhone will soon be on sale too.

from amazing flexible HD2 also but after struggling in out of stock issue here in saudi arabia i gave my beloved galaxy s2 to my girlfriend.. i used it only for 3 days.. anyway i will buy again next month..

I switched from a HTC HD2 X10i to the Samsung Galaxy S II.

Came from Samsung Jet.
No regrets here either.
Jet became laggy and got memory issues when trying to edit pics and so on.
Running Cognition 1.07 on my SGS2 and got 2 days and 23 hours out of it yesterday.

I switched from samsung omnia 2. Beside the better sound and battery life I don't regret anything.

[Q] - what made you buy an X10

Well... just in a way out of curiosity - what made you think "This is what is missing in my life" of the X10?
For me it was a friend who showed it to me and I tried it - and almost immediately fell in love with it.
Actually this is the second best phone I have owned. The best is the Nokia 3210 - that phone could withstand some serious beatings and "falling-out-of-the-pocket-onto-the-asphalt"!
1. I'm 17
2. Need an upgrade from the LG Vu
3. The chick who sold it was hot
4. Phone looked sexy and was a MAJOR upgrade to a smartphone
I got conned into buying it by the rogers sales man, personally I would have liked to do some more research before buying the phone
I never had a smartphone before my X10. In the past I had feature phones from Nokia, Motorola, and then I had a Sony Ericsson Z525 which I liked.
When the Sony Ericsson X1 first came out, I was impressed. I wanted it, but it was not offered in the United States though one of the major wireless carriers here, so I just kept on using my Z525. When the X2 came along, I thought it was unimpressive so I didn't think about that one much.
I saw videos of the X10 around the time of its release and was impressed by the custom UI so that started up my interest in the XPERIA X-series again. Then as Android became more and more popular, I kept hoping that it would make it to the U.S.. When it finally did, I picked one up for $50.00 (U.S.D.) and have been happy with it.
It's a nice evolutionary kind of product for me. I used to use a PlayStation Portable for mobile gaming, listening to music, and videos. And I used a Sony NAV-U for navigation. Now my X10 is my main portable music player, it's great for watching videos, I have some casual games installed on it, the camera is okay when I'm without my usual digital point-and-shoots, and the free Google Maps/Navigation can't be beat. It's also great to have around for general Web stuff.
The only bummer about the phone is being tied to AT&T:
Who will never offer firmware upgrades to their Android 1.6 X10 customers
Who has no inexpensive unlimited data plan
I'm using the SE generic global 2.1 firmware right now which suits me fine, and I'm patiently waiting for the 2.3 upgrade. The phone may no longer be a high-end device, but it's still sleek looking, has good build quality, performs decently, and does what I need it to do.
1. Loved the design
2. I've been an Ericsson/Sony Ericsson Fanboy since the 90s.
3. I originally wanted a desire but that wasn't available on my network carrier.
4. I've wanted a smart phone. Could never afford UIQ phones (nearly bought an M600 once), never liked S60, WM or ios so Android on SE was a god send.
free and the camera
Its design, white color, and the "Sony" word..
1. Camera
2. Cheaper then the desire and sgs on craigslist when I bought it
Truth be told as soon as I'm eligible for a upgrade through rogers I'm selling my x10
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Sony always works great for me. Since I bought my first Z500 almost 10 years ago.
i had a crappy galaxy i7500, needed a new high end smartphone, xperia x10 was a good choice, under circumstances had to get it used, it was the cheapest used high end smartphone i could get, at $200 for a pretty good condition, i'm pretty happy by my purchase

My first smartphone, and I knowingly bought it when I knew it was at its end of the life cycle because it was relatively cheap (350 bucks without plan) and was fast and sexy, and I saw the support XDA had for this smartphone.
It was love at first sight.
I would have gone for the captivate for ATT but it was too expensive at the time. So i got the X10 instead. I am glad i did it in the long run cuz of the upcoming release of gingerbread and the camera. I personally love my X10.

It never came to me that I need to buy anything larger than Sonyericsson T303, and never came to my mind to buy an x10 mini, but when I was looking for a new phone, I see a couple of good review about the x10 mini, so I bought one. after a month or two I find it hard to surf the web because of its size, and my Post paid plan contract is ending soon, so I aquire the plan with x8, which is like mini, only larger. I get used to it.
So I was thinking, X10 mini have decent camera, but small in size, X8 have larger display but lousy camera, so I trade it for X10. I was thinking of HTC Desire HD, but finding it too big. I was also eyeing for defy but x10 screen is larger.
So there, X10's journey to my life is not that easy nor complicated. I think this is what we call destiny.. hahahaha...
June last year i wanted one of 2 phones, desire or x10.
Was my first android phone so no research was done.... doh
I ended up getting x10 cus the desire looked so wide like a brick.
Now i wish i didnt upgrade on my exact due date, i should of waited till more phones were released.
However i still love my x10 but only thanks to xda community!

[Q] What will be your next Android phone?

It's not a secret that the Optimus One is getting long in the tooth and several hacks and workarounds are undertaken just to make it as usable as most new phones in the market. That said, what is your planned upgrade path?
If I get enough money, I like the HTC Evo 3D.
Though I think of switching to desire z or defy or galaxy s or dell steak(bigger screen fascinates me) , I have second thoughts again and again.
I feel we already have gingerbread, good 3d, good internal memory via 1gb ext partitions, 512 mb ram. Sound is great now with gb too.
So what will we get after upgrading. I believe a bigger screen, flash support, dlna, 720p video recording. But then I think how frequently will I use them. After thinking this I just become satisfied with my present o1.

QWERTY droids are starting to look good to me. I'm getting pretty tired of touchscreen typing so if I will stick with Android (for now I'm not really sure I want Android anymore) it will be either a QWERTY one or a 4-4.3" one for precise typing (thin chances because I'm tired of poor battery life).
All i can say is it will not be any LG, just coz they made us w8 for Android 2.3.

Please, consider that this is a low end phone and that there are 5+ different versions of this phone. Many high end phones don't even have 2.3 officially announced. We have an estimated time with videos of the official gingerbread. No reason to hate LG. I would much rather have a finished bug free update then bug full one. It's annoying that people are putting LG/this phone down because of the 2.3 update. This phone is zippy for what it has and LG has done a great job.
This phone pretty much satisfies my needs, I'll probably buy another in a year or so, so whatever looks good then I'll buy it
I am very pleased with my Optimus. I like the Nexus S but can't justify the cost. If I were to break my Optimus T I'd buy another one now that it's $50 cheaper than when I bought mine back in November ;(.

I'm not planning buying a new phone anytime soon. I'll propably keep my O1 at least until xmass.
It was my first android (ex symbian fanboy) and I didn't want to spend much money in case i didn't like it (but I fell in love with it) but my next android will definetly be a high-end phone.
Dual core, wvga, hdmi capabilities etc. If I was to buy a new phone now I'd choose optimus x2. A friend of mine got it few days ago and I like it very much

The O1 really is a potent Android gateway drug. Knowing the power of this OS, I wouldn't settle on less than high-end for my next Android phone.
I like my O1 Thankfully it was a right choice, It does everything i want too, And now that its overclocked its performing without any lags, Add to that Gingerbread.... its Got Juice for another year or so...

x10 mini "Buyers Remorse"

A week after I bought this phone the Xperia mini came out. It just broke my heart to see the newer phones specs! :'( 1Ghz +HD recording.
Anyone else feeling the same?
I bought this stupid crap phone in the beginning of 2011. Stupidest choice I've made so far.
I bought this crap 4 months ago and 2 weeks ago my earphone stopped working. I took it to a service point to be fixed and they told me that it must be replaced with a new one BUT my warranty was void as i was responsible for the problem!
I told them to just return the phone unrepaired and now the damn thing doesnt even turn on!!!
Crappy company, crappy phone, crappy technicians, to hell with all of them!
That was the last SE phone i bought!

I have to agree with EVERY WORD! Their customer service is **** and their phones are even worse. My next phone will be either an HTC or Samsung, but one thing is certain, my friend, NO MORE SONY ERICSSON! For ever and ever and ever.
Over the years, I have had two Sony Ericsson phones and I have been displeased with both of them.
I got my crap back in summer 2010(june-july) now i am looking for a proper android smartphone and definitely not from SE.
OMG the same here >.< i want that new mini its much cooler with 1Ghz,bravia engine,Android 2.3 Gingerbread and the new cool SE interface the old one sucks (1 widget per page >.<) and HD recording!
well, buying an x10 mini/mini pro in 2011 is, with no disrespect meant, stupid piece of an act!!!!...u should keep an eye on the market before buying this!!!!....for me, i always fancied the modding power of this cell and i find it 2 be kinda cute
but for every1, u should always have another "power" cell for daily (and satisfying) usage....am lucky enough to have an Incredible S as my "daily" cell....the mini is just for "fun"
but for 1 thing, i'll vouch word for word--SE Customer Service SUCKSSSS!!!!my headfone stopped working within 2 months of purchase and they said "I" did something wrong!!! ....and i don't know bout other places, but in India, dey don't even keep tab on it's development too....dey were like fish out of water seeing me use dual touch "pinch 2 zoom" (i didn't tell them dat it was "fake" ...didn't want 2 ruin their "alice in wonderland" expression )
x10 mini screen size is too small man :| if it had a 3 inch display it would be a perfect android!
Other than small screens and ear pieces can anyone elaborate on why this is crap?
I have one on its way to me now.
Also are the custom roms a big improvment over stock?
For me this phone combined with cm7 is the best android phone around.
Custom roms are a great improvement over stock. In fact I find the mini pro much easier to use than any phone with touch screen only and chugs along quite nicely for photos, music, web browsing and heaps of apps and games.
Not a piece of crap at all compared to similarly priced phones here in nz unless you choose to run stock.

Excellent phone,
First I bought it for my wife.
And then I bought another one for me.
It all depends of what is important for you.
It is small and robust, you can use it with one hand, and the camera is still one of the best in the market. The GPS fix is fast. The sound is excellent to play MP3. The speakers are quite good. The battery life is excellent using CM6.
I used to have bigger phone, bigger screen but frankly, if you don't spend you life sending SMS and webbrowsing on a phone, you should rather consider a smaller, handy phone. On top of that you have less chances to have your phone stolen.

You're right in what you say.
Shame this is my first post here,, But for all you fine folks complaining about it (the phone).. did you not read up on the phone specs before you bought it.. look at pictures of the the phone,,possibly hold it in you hand and turn it on look at the screen and say wow it's small ect.. well if you did and you still bought it, only to complain about it now.. Don't blame S.E as I seriously doubt that any of their sales reps where there twisting your arm.. Customer service is another story..
This phone is actually quite good for what it offers and more! It's just that 5 days after I got it the Xperia mini got launched. That was a punch in my face! XD
Wish we too could get HD recording(atleast 720p) sigh!
I only realise SE have crappy software after they announced that X10 mini pro isn't going to be updated to Gingerbread coz of non-portable code.
I also realise SE have the crappiest software after using CM7.
But then again, this phone's hardware combined with CM7 makes the best phone out of all I've ever had so far.
Cheers.
Have got a prerelease new mini pro, which seems to have all the bits that were missing from the x10 mini. We now have the HD 720 recording, bravia screen, exmor camera and all the other bells and whistles SE are sticking in things..its a bit of a chunker though, couple of mm thicker than the previous model.

What made you pick the S3 over the competition?

Hey guys/gals,
I'm literally counting the days til my upgrade, however with phones like the One X and a few others which i can't think of off the top of my head. Rather than asking VS. questions which will be answered by biased views or perhaps answers which don't answer the why i'll ask it like this.
What was the feature that made you buy the phone over the other phones on the market, what is your favourite feature which made the phone a defo puchase?
Thanks to all that answer this for me.
Mainly the processor, big ass screen and clearly the brand Samsung. HTC are good but from past experience I know that what they seem to offer is not always what they actually have to offer. Other phones are just out of the question, like nokia pure view since I would rather buy a camera than buy that phone (though I already have a DSLR so I don't need one). And to be honest I normally pick phones right away and then find everything there is to know about them. I just told myself that now is the time and this is the phone I want to buy.

Thanks for the input so far guys, its not a case I'm doubting the s3 but I'll probably get lumbered with a 24month contract and I don't want to miss out on another phone due to blindly buying the s3

If I had a Galaxy Nexus as your signature suggests I would have skipped the S3, I don't think the incremental benefits merit a 24 month tie in. Or you could upgrade now and when the next gen handsets are released your S3 and GN should raise enough to buy whatever tickles your fancy.
For me it was the SD card slot and removable battery. Also I was concerned about all of the screen scratch talk with the one X.
On AT&T, the One X looks to be the better performer but couldn't get past the issues above.

Contract ????? £500 PAYG unbranded CPW .

Because the One X is inexcuseably flawed with the lack of replaceable battery and memory slot and traditionally rubbish battery life, and even though the S3 is also flawed most of it is just software problems that can be bodged up after the fact.
SIII doesn't have any serious competition imho. It is the best phone in the market at the moment hands down. If only my other decisions in life are that easy

I totally agree. Especially the fact that the nexus is about to get jelly bean, it's gonna be a brand new phone. Yes the S3 is the best phone out right now ( in my opinion) but the nexus is also fantastic and I miss that phone sometimes.

To be honest I believe that there soon won't be a device (including Samsung) that will be let's say 2 or 3 times faster, better, etc. that the SIII. Quad core processors came out now so next year probably they will continue to distribute them. Plus custom roms or the SIII will get better, these guys at xda do a better job than any company out there, they are users that make upgrades for users and know what we exactly need. Software is never an issue it can always be upgraded, modified unlike hardware that is something that is hard to replace in a phone. So when I look for a phone I mainly look at the hardware, for the hidden potential of the phone. And to be honest Samsung SIII is the fastest phone currently on the market and we all know well that it has the most juice in it.

The Nexus always gets the latest OS first but as soon as the Galaxy S's get upgraded you just get stuck with a phone that's always worse than the equivalent Galaxy S, and I'd never buy a phone just to get an OS a few months early because I'd quickly realise the mistake I made.

+1. If you have a Nexus already, I agree that it will feel like a new phone with JellyBean on it.
I am still getting the S3 though. I will be new to Android so will have a bit of learning to do, and JellyBean is supposed to be coming to the S3 in Q4, so by then I'll be ready for it and I think it will make the S3 super-super-swishy (from the mere super-swishy it is now).
For me, replaceable batteries & memory cards are a must, so that basically blew many other phones out of the picture. Good camera, USB OTG, MHL-ing to use it as a games console, proper HD screen, good battery - all of these things sold it too me.
No iThings for me. I don't want to get tied into any restrictive iContract with iEULA, not shackled to iTunes, titchy screen, etc etc.
I was happy with my Windows HTC HD2 (before I bricked it). Hoping buying a Samsung flagship model on Android (with the massive user group that's gathering behind it and seemingly fast updates OTA from Sammy) will mean this phone will function well out of the box, and function amazeballs with a few custom tweaks & mods.
Hopefully I will get my UK blue this week :cyclops::victory:
Screen size and speed
Already running Jellybean, but like people have said you can change Software you can't change hardware and one thing i do miss is the S2 camera I had, so the Samera on the S3 is one of my big reasons.
Thanks to everyone who has posted so far.
What competition?
My last phone was an HTC Desire, and since I was displeased with the HTC Sense UI, I just decided that my next phone would be a Samsung. And the S III just happened to be the best phone out there.
hox has too weak battery in my case, so its a no-competition thing actually
next close to perfect phone is still good old i9000
The hype about it - I figured that with all the talk there would be loads of custom roms developed for the phone. I signed up for a two year contract and I wanted a phone that could last two years which this should do well with that processor. Had a Nexus S before and considered buying a Galaxy Nexus, but 16GB internal and no option for external SD just didn't appeal to me.

Android phone for a lady ?

Hi my girlfriend has birthday next month and she was talking latelly thank she'd like to have a smartphone because she'd love to surf internet on the go, listen to music ( she's using some old mp3 player atm ), check e-mail etc.
She's been using a classic candy bar phones for years and I was thinink that as her bday is comming I could get smartphone for her as a gift.
But I'm not really sure which model would suit a total newbie in the smartphone world ? She's never used a touch screen phone, she only played littlebit with mine Nexus 7.
I use HTC HD7 personally and it comes with Windows Phone 7 but i thought Android would be better for her because of more apps, etc.
Is there anything you could recommend ?
Battery life longer than 20h would be great ( mine HD7 last like 26-28h )
Thanks !
White Galaxy s II or III depends on your budget .
the smooth interface and lightweight design make these some of the best performing phones right out of the box to date battery life depends on usage but you can ussually get bout 16+ hours of normal use which is very good for android+ the large display. If it were me definetly the galaxy s III

How about something smaller ?
I think 4+ inch will be too big for her hands.
Mine HD7 is sometimes too big for me and my hands are bigger.
Galaxy Ace 2 white, 3.8 inch, 2 cams, ics upgrade coming in, good price and also a good entry phone.

Xperia u or galaxy mini 2 or htc one v..., it really depends on how much you want to spend on it and you should know her better than i do (lol), so if she doesn't like suprises you should ask her to pick one for herself

That Galaxy Ace 2 looks interesting I'll look into it. Thank you.
Any more models you could think of ? I'd like to have a bigger spectrum of choices.
Samsung Captivate (4', a lot of support from community), Motorola Atrix 4G or Atrix 2 (4', Tegra II or OMAP dual core), SE Mini ST15 (3')

The Sony Xperia U. Great features, great price, should be getting a JB update soon and very soon.

I gave mine an HTC One S (blue), after having used the iphone 3gs for 2 year, she's very satisfied with the One S, great battery life too up to 5 days. Sense really is a great addition to android, especially for non-techies but if you get the one S be sure to get the snapdragon 4 variant not the the s3 variant.
From my experience , ladies that are generally not geeky prefer something that fits their hands, like some 3.7-4" htc. And on top of that if its pink... well, lets just say she'll be more than glad
I recently suggested htc wildfire to a friend of mine who never had android before. Shes now a successful convert to our beloved OS
Yup I've decided to go for Samsung Galaxy Mini 2.
Unfortunatelly resolution isn't the greatest but it's is a really nice little device. She had old nokia anyway so for her that resolution is going to be a huge step forward anyway.
Perfect size, nice and round edges and it's really good looking and it wasn's super expensive either. She'll be happy with it I'm sure.
Thank you guys for all sugestions !
I gave to my girlfriend an HTC Cha Cha. And she is not really happy...
My wife got as a present a white wildfire S.
She was really happy using it
Until our son broke the (gorilla) screen

Just gave my girlfriend a Nexus 7. She was using an iPad 2 before it broke. I was nervous about her moving from iOS to JB, but she's adapted nicely. She prefers it significantly to the iPad (which she was crazy about).

My girlfriend has a Galaxy S (the original one) and she loves it. The fact that it's running Android meant she was able to turn the home screen and app drawer into a hideous mess of pink and sparkles...
I'd recommend skipping that for the S2 though. Absolutely AMAZING smartphone, near perfection, and you get ICS on it now so it's faster and more functional. I'd skip the Galaxy 'Ace' range as most people I know who have one struggle with it due to it being a little bit too underpowered for what it's trying to run.

Haha that happened to my girlfriends Iphone after i jailbroke it and taught her how to theme it. The next day she shows me her phone and its all baby blue and pink all over the place. I keep telling her all the theming stuff is easier on android but girls tend to like the iphone because it is more of a fashion accessory and dont tend to care too much about what their phone can do.
Well in some ways iPhone can do more though, there's way more on the app store, you just have less control over the fundamentals.
She bought an Xperia U today. Pink on the inside AND outside, even got the light to go pink, lol
