If it's just the bootanimation.zip you can't flash it. You need to copy it to your sdcard, then using root explorer or another file manager move it to /system/media.
Backup the bootanimation.zip which is already in there. I usually just rename to bootanimation_original.zip or something like that.
<edit> Just saw your edit! hah........nm

So I'm trying to put together a bootanimation. I've adjusted the desc.txt to fit the Atrix and timing of the clip. Then I just stole the META-INF folder from another bootanimation and zipped the package. Although when I attempt to install it simply fails installation. Any tips?
What are you using to zip the files?
Are you unzipping the Meta-Inf folder correctly from the package you are taking it from?
What version of firmware are you on?
Are you using the old or new Tenfar CWM to flash?

I'm probably not unzipping it correctly, all I did was extract it from a boot animation that works on 2.3.4.
2.3.4
New Tenfar CWM
Whe I change the boot animation in the rom's .zip do I then reflash the rom?
And if so do I do a wipe or just reflash without any wipe.
Thanks
you can just make a zip with the bootanimation and then flash that only.. no need to reflash the rom
Any time I have tried to just flash the zip with the boot animation it didn't take and the animation for the rom I am running (CleanRom) is still present.

Did you make sure that the bootanimation.zip in located in the in the same directory in the flashable zip as it is in the rom. For example, alot of roms the boot animation is located in system/media, therefore it would need to be in the same directory in the flashable zip. you can also just use a file manager like root explorer or es file explorer and just swap out the animations.
It seems like swapping them out is a tad easier

if you only need to install, reinstall or repair your some application, then you only have to extract it, copy it to sd card and install it as a normally .apk. but if it a system apk, you have to push it by using an explorer that can access system file, e.g Root Explorer.
I guess it's not a flashable zip. it's a firmware with .ftf extention inside the .rar.
so you can't install it by CWM, you have to flash it by flashtool. CMIIW
erm..i dnt know..but i couldn't find any .tft file inside..lots of folder..bt sure is,thr lots of .apk files too..
so..how??=.=
wait a minute, I'm downloading it to see the file.

those were system files from your phone that have been extracted from ICS rom...what you see in the system files is the same as in your phone...those system files is good backup in case you decided to remove/edit any system files (bloatware)....
those system files is not for normal install...you have to use Root Explorer to copy and paste it to your phone system files if you want get back the files you have remove before this....
remember you need to change permission for those files (rw-r-r)....

agree with this...
just like I posted above, you have to push it manually to /system/app .
I am using Hephappy's CM9 ROM.I have had no boot animation since i flashed this ROM. I tried almost everything I could to get the bootanimation back. I tried to download them separately and put them in /data/local;/system/media, I used rom toolbox to install it, tried to change the desc.txt, changed file permissions, but still there is no bootanimation. And also I renamed them to bootanimation.zip; pls. give me a solution to this problem
Do you reflashed the ROM?

Are you using cm9 REDPILL? Because i think hephappy removed the bootanim from it. Check the rom zip if it have bootanimation.zip
Anyway i am attaching bootanimation.zip from cm9 upstream.
Copy this bootanimation.zip as it is to system/media/
No need to set permissions or anything.

There is no problem with bootanimation on hephappy's ROMs. Just stick it to /data/local/bootanimation.zip:
Code:
adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local/
To test, run
Code:
adb shell bootanimation
instead of rebooting. No bootanimation? You have a broken ZIP, try another bootanimation.

Are you sure it goes to /data/local/bootanimation.zip ?
I saw it in some other threads too so i checked on my phone and i don't have that file /data/local/ but i have it in /system/media/ and it works for me.
So, i thought that purpose of having it in /data/local/ was to save space in system and you would have to config some extra things.
Maybe i was wrong?

I'm in the process of installing custom firmwares on my phone and I'm at the part where I need to put the modded e3 recovery on my phone. I watched a YouTube video saying I need root explorer to go into the system/bin folder and copy and paste the modded file there along with the original one but the problem is, there is no original recovery file. It's missing and when I put the modded file there it won't boot into the modded recovery. Please help
PS: I found the original recovery file but it was in another spot. Should I move it to system/bin,?

I have exactly the same problem with my AT&T Infuse updated to stock Gingerbread 2.3.6 (rooted with framaroot). I see no recovery file in system/bin folder. In addition, all files in system/bin are greyed out with question marks. I used ES file explorer with root access). If you found a solution, please share.
