Does FOTA actually work?? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry for asking a simple question but even the o2 gurus don't know.
Do updates come via ota or do you HAVE to use kies to get updates??
Or is there only specific updates that come via ota? Ie gingerbread updates come via ota but touchwiz/Samsung updates cone through kies??
There seems to be conflicting info on the net.
Currently have unbranded s2 on o2
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App

Kies FOTA has yet to be used by Samsung .
Samsung apps updates come OTA via the Samsung Apps widget .
jje

If I remember correctly, Samsung never licenced the OTA capability, so while you will see the Software Update in settings, you won't get any joy.
Any official updates will appear via Kies.

FOTA is a service provided by google, a paid service that is. samsung doesnt pay

Nah, no FOTA... Can't be all fun now can it? Kies is the small price we have to pay for enjoying the best phone in the world

love the phone, had to jump through a few hoops to get it work through linux/ubuntu as well.. Hence the FOTA update query as i dont go near a windows pc that often.
Anyways an update is needed, after emailing samsung online support team (god knows how long it took me to find this) i received this back
"Thank you for contacting Samsung and I have pleasure in providing the
following assistance.
Regarding your query, kindly note UK does not support yet OTA ‘over the air’ updates and you can kindly
check our website for further and latest updates. We would like to inform you that our engineering’s are
working on releasing a firmware over the air update for the Galaxy S II ‘GT-I9100’ but it is still not available yet;
however, any news on this matter will be made public through our website so kindly keep checking our
website for latest and further updates.
We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding.
If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and
we will be more than happy to help."
if i know engineers... this may be a long * infinity amount of time

They started FOTA in sweden a few days ago for SGS2
There are several reports that this works well. You simply go to settings->about and manually check for update.
They probably launch soon in other countries as well.

This is also confirmed in Finland. First update I believe we've had since the phone was released..
This is great news for me because as a Mac user Kies does not do firmware upgrades. It will tell you the current and the new version, but no option to update... After seeing this for weeks I pulled out my thinkpad who's sole purpose is Kies.
New version of Kies came out, updated, but some driver would not get installed.. so I uninstalled, downloaded the new version and installed. Still did not work so decided to install the windows updates.. Since that was taking forever decided to kill time looking at XDA.. so I found this thread. Figured it would not work but what the heck...
Checked for software update, downloaded, installed. Done, in 10 minutes.
Good thing too as my "Kies" PC fails to boot after the windows updates......

Sounds great, I guess Samsung has released an OTA update for the "NEE" region regardless of the specific country then. If I'm right OTA should work in Denmark and Norway as well, assuming you're using stock firmware though...

So are these OTA's being delivered by Samsung or by your carrier??

This is done via the Samsung account (you need to create one when searching for udpate the first time). So these are delivered by Samsung at least in that sense.
But also carrier specific firmwares in general are released by Samsung (via Kies).

FOTA Didn't work for me. Kies is not loading.
I will stay with 2.3.

t-mobile (austria) got FOTA update today http://fota-dn.ospserver.net/firmware/MAX/GT-I9100/FW-20120418-89510.bin ? strange version date ? for galaxy SII (bin file is a zip archive with delta_ files...)

Yup...updates over the Air FOTA is real
But you can update your phone firmware via Kies as it is considered to be more safe...

hi, got some information about fota device register. (http://pastebin.com/byVGYzbb) only question is how to get the OAUTH_CONSUMER_SECRET, think it must be stored somewhere on the device or included in some library...
hints welcome
edit (21.10.2012): found some password and user id in wssdmdatabase.db (table profile) (some data is unchanged after factory reset, but [*nonce] is changed)...

[Q] Three (H3G) Branded S3

Hi Guys,
Just a quick question here that I cant seem to piece the answer together for. I have seen in the forum requests and talk about Three branded S3's and just wondered if anyone that has used it or knows more than I could tell me.
1) Apart from start-up logo is there anything else on a 3 branded phone that's missing or cant be removed without needing to be root or re-flashing it?
2) I directly asked the guys in the shop if they change the firmware/ROM and they said no when Samsung release updates you get them instantly, would that be true? I mean if its branded doesn't that mean it goes through the network to tinker before release?
I ask as my HTC Desire was from T-Mobile and they took so long to release the 2.3 update (If they ever did) I went custom ROM and while I can always go custom or flash an unbranded ROM out of the box I could just go to carphone warehouse, etc and buy it unbranded in the first place (For a slightly worse deal) and the fear I feel flashing a brand new phone is quite high
Thanks,
Snowdan.

That would be a first .
Easy to test 3UK will now be on LFB firmware in the UK and available OTA /Kies as an update since last week .##

i can tell you that its not true., i also purchased it on three UK and the firmware it came with was the inital release one which is I9300XXALE8_I9300H3GALE4_H3G which i believe was released in may, i tried to update to the latest one via ota and kies but it kept saying my software is uptodate. which was a lie. i then installed I9300XXALE8 (4.0.4) which is a unbranded version and check on kies and immediately it prompted me for an update I9300XXBLFB (4.0.4) which was released 26 June 2012. I9300BVALE4 (4.0.4) was released 13 May 2012.
i had to change the CSC so that kies would recognize my device and allow updates.

Thanks for the response guys it sounded unlikely. I will take the non optimal deal and have the unbranded out of the box just to save the upfront effort. Once I start flashing ROM's I find it hard t stop and would like to use this vanilla and unrooted (Hoping for Sky Go ICS support one of these days) for a bit.
Thanks,

OTA or Odin

Hi, I picked up an sgs3 the other day. The firmware on it is XXLF2. I was just wondering what the experiences were with regards to OTA update? Is it recommended or would flashing the latest LG8 fw for UK via Odin be better?
Thanks for any advice.
One of the reasons why it might come in handy to restore a previous update could be due to the fact that the new update will not be optimized for our phone and waiting for the release of a more stable version, use Odin may serve us to go back. A very recent example is the first update to Android 4.0.3 on Galaxy S2 where there were several people who wanted to go back to Gingerbread ... Of course, another reason could be that we want to load a firmware later, but that in our country has not yet been made available ... see Notes Galaxy and the German ROM which runs the network.
But Odin is not only original Samsung firmware to load, but also allows you to load ROM cooked in order to have more personalized and optimized.
Odin's software runs on Windows PCs, and lets you do the above, but now we see how the program works.

Nice1 thank you devid801. I've used Odin to flash ROMs on my sgs1 but the OTA update on sgs3 has me interested Suppose I could always flash via Odin the latest FW if OTA FW isn't the latest.
Thanks again mate.
we say that the telephone operators are slow to release updates, even compared to the parent, so if you do not want to wait using odin! read a guide before, and you always make a nandroid backup before making any operation. ..

Odin is beeing used in official service and repair centers to flash samsung firmware
As always two paths for ease of use one via Samsung Kies or OTA .
OTA will probably fail on rooted phone .
Join XDA flash stock firmware as and when you want .
My view is if you want to stay with Samsung /official path then do so but its the attempts to mix and match that lead to trouble .

Thanks jje. I think i'll stay stock for now but see what update OTA offers me Saying that, XXLF2 fw does not seem bad so far.
Will look to find what the differences are between LF2 and LG8 fw.
Thanks for all the feedback.

I have recently flashed my Orange GS3 to XXLF2. I'm not getting any OTA updates post flashing and i know there is an update that gives you the option to auto aujust brightness on the drop down. Is this normal after flashing? Or has something gone a bit wrong?

Your firmware is from Taiwan..and for it the latest version is what you are currently using..however you dont need to wait for updates you can download firmware for United Kingdom the latest is I9300XXBLG8..you can download it from here..
http://samsung-updates.com/get/58/Samsung_Firmware_GT-I9300_BTU_I9300XXBLG8_Android_4_0_4.html
then flash it via odin...search these threads for the method to do so..
Hi man, Unlike iphone, offical rom is always the worst one.It usually uses more memory and have bad battery management. You can try another rom such as mike's.

Thank you! I am not too familiar with flashing with Android again because it is something new and if anything were to happen I wouldn't know how to fix it since I have been an iPhone user. Is flashing firmware any different from jailbreaking the iPhone? - in terms of being safer. Also, how can I be 100% sure that the UK version will work on my phone as well as keep my unlock.

Flashing the firmware is 100% safe if you follow the steps..it does not root your phone so it is not jailbreaking...so you will also not loose your warranty...
the firmwares are almost the same for every region, samsung being an a***le released different firmwares for different regions with different CSC....
but i am quite sure it will work on you region as you are already using Taiwan firmware in Canada...in any case download the Taiwan specific firmware also..so if anything goes wrong you can revert back...
by the way I am in India using BTU firmware..
Me too...
Along the same lines, I have an I-9300 sgs3 with South Africa firmware (XFE), i9300xxale9, but I'm using it in the United States, on AT&T, and am not able to receive updates thru either Kies or Update menu. I will NOT be traveling outside the US anytime soon. What should I load that would let me receive updates here in the States OTA?

[Q] Device not supported for updating via Kies

Hi,
I have a SGS2 handset that I bought from India which has CSC set as INU. Now, I am in US for a few weeks using AT&T sim card and recently found out that a new firmware update has been released for my handset. I was trying to update it using Kies but got the error that my device does not support firmware update via Kies.
Now, there are 2 cases:
1. If this is because I am in US and my CSC is for India, Kies is not letting me update.. then either I can wait for a while, go back to India and update it. Or, please suggest me if there is a way to tell KIES to use INU code for updating this handset?
2. If there is some other issue, then I would want to resolve that right now instead of waiting.
Can someone please suggest me if it's 1 or 2? Any suggestions would be most welcome.
I know ODIN is an option but I prefer to use KIES.
Thanks.

Go to sammobile.com, create an account there and download a firmware from the US.. since OTA updates are region-wise.
After downloading the file, you will get a .zip file.. when you extract it, you will get a .tar file
flash via Odin..
Put your phone to download mode and put the .tar you just extracted to PDA
Cheers!
You may love Odin. It's much more secure

Just dont do anything. Why are people like you hellbent on updating.Do you think you are missing out on something free.
I wonder if any of them athletes that were over here for the Olympics updated their Samsungs.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I got this resolved few days back and figured what the issue was so wanted to drop a line. Actually, I was trying different modems few months back and had installed a different one than what Kies was expecting and hence I was getting that error. I had completely forgotten about it and then one of my friend reminded me about it.. I switched back to the original modem and Kies agreed to update my phone's fw.
I do like Odin but since I haven't used it much and still have my phone under warranty, I prefer to stick to standard methods.

Hi,
I`m having the same problem.my workmate has the same phone on the same network (orange) and hes had the jellybean update for a few days now. Im getting really miffed as i got the phone on the day it came out and he got it a few weeks after yet he has the update without a problem.
You`re doing it the hard way.
Use Odin3... easy, fast, and certain to work.
Search the forums on how to upgrade to JB using Odin3.
It has been released on EE, many of my friend already have the jellybean update.
Is there any way to get my system restore button?
Any solutions?
One use Kies two ask your phone provider .
Three join XDA Developers forum .Four try a Samsung forum .
