Just got off the phone with HTC about camera problems - HTC EVO 3D

He basicly played dumb, in short;
Shutter lag. " this camera doesn't have an actual shutter"
Green tint with flash. "get better lighting"
Blurry low light shots "change camera settings, shake less"
camera force close " it's a phone that takes pictures, its not a camera"
missing "scenes feature" " that is a misprint"
why did I have none of these problems with my evo 4g? "that's different hardware and software"
Are they going to adress with an update? " we are working on an update, but I don't know if it will fix camera"
I know some of you have no problems with the camera, but many of us do, so please don't flame.

LMAO! And that (plus a bunch of other ****!) my friends is why my 3D is going back to HTC, if I wanted a second rate phone I would get a iphone

Ur answered all of your answers logically and it seems honestly,, can't argue that, so what's the point of the thread?

If I actually got those replies in any way close to the manner which you described, you can bet I'd be talking to a supervisor/manager, and possibly emailing their customer care with a complaint as well.

Take it in, that's what TEP is for.

1. turn of picture review = solved.
2. i just saw this today... i was outside in the sun.. the flash went off and made the picture green...
i am afraid to exchange it and get one with an even worse problem...

I could deal with the rest of the answers, but this one would have just ****ed me off. Goddamn smartass is he.

Maybe this is just me, but I notice with flash and fluorescent lighting I don't get the green tint, but with incandescent lighting I get some green. I just assumed it was because of the lighting. With my digital camera it is just the opposite.
However, it is pretty easy to fix with software...which begs the question...why not implement whatever magic photo editing software does to fix it right into the camera software so the problem isn't there to begin with? LOL

run the first RUU... run the 2nd RUU. Be much happier.

Keep in mind ALL digital cameras struggle with White Balance issues.
Especially Incandescent lighting.
The only way to "fix it" on "real" cameras is Custom White Balance (you shoot a grey card and tell the camera that's your reference) or you shoot RAW and correct it later in software (e.g. Adobe). You can "fix" JPG's too but it's not as optimal.
Even if it's "different" how 4G behaved it's not right to say 3D is broken. It's just "adjusted" a little different.
That said, I went to best buy to compare the camera with my 4G. Wow it was pretty bad. It's colors were not bad. But the detail (sharpness) was aweful.
I am running MikG ROM that has a Sense 3.0 camera (with only 1/2 of the special effects working). I was surprized that the 3D Stock camera didn't have Panorama mode (in 2D mode).
I so much want to like the 3D but it's making it aweful hard to like.

I'm in the digital photography industry and I have EVERY issue you listed, and the issues are significant, particularly the shutter lag and the fact that it still takes 1/2 second exposures even when you use flash. Needless to say the HTC responses are a joke. Maybe post them on their Facebook page?
BTW, turning off image review has absolutely no effect on this problem nor do any of the other camera settings: no matter what you do, you'll still get a full second (sometimes more) shutter lag.

Because he was a smartass on things like the "shutter lag", and saying "it's a phone not a camera" when one of the big marketing points is that you can take 3D images.
I bet you're one of those that would be happy if you bought a car, drove it off the lot, and found that the radio didn't work, but when you went back to the dealership, they told you it was a car for driving, not a stereo, right?

Massive camera shutter lag

OK I really hope this is a bug! I thought at first the lag was due to indoor low light but even if you prefocus with a half shutter press, the camera still takes up to two seconds to actually take the shot and by then, the subject is often gone. Exposure time is way too long with flash too:its as if you are shooting without flash. The camera needs a lot of work!
Mike
Wow, I'm surprised this isn't running the gauntlet here. The camera lag is so bad that the camera is just about unusable. Even with flash off and a half press (prefocus), the camera is so slow that it can only be used to capture still life or pre-arranged shots: at least a full second delay. Trying to get a candid shot: forget it!
And the exposure time is so long on flash shots that you might as well not even have flash: still blurry.
To me, these are really bugs so I hope they are fixed.
Mike
Using the on screen button is usually quicker than the actual shutter button. Not sure why. I love having the physical button but I find that I am unable to take action shots with it at all due to the lag.
Try using the on screen button and see what kind of results you get.
May have somethin to do with the auto enhance setting, I haven't tested it but just thought I should.mention it
Bussin Caps from my 3D shooter
I tried it by unchecking all the boxes like auto enhance, 16:9, and tried the button on the screen (after tap focusing) and I still get the same delay. The odd thing is that sometimes it only takes maybe a half second. Other times it takes up to TWO full seconds. And it does freeze the screen initially right when you press the shutter, it just doesn't take the photo at that time. After the delay, it freezes again (at a different point in time) and that is when the actual shot is taken. Trying to take a picture of my friend's newborn over the weekend, I couldn't get one good shot. Babies move a lot and I timed it when she had her head tilted just right and pressed the shutter but by the time the camera took the picture, she had her hand in her mouth or had turned her head to the side, etc.
Mike
One of the things that I noticed is that even after you do a pre-focus, once you press the camera button, it re-focuses *again*. This may be the reason for the lag.
I've read its Androids fault in the way the software performs. Who knows, for those moments use video and later take the frame you want...maybe.
This is the single biggest, and probably only, reason I'm seriously contemplating returning my EVO. I cant stand the camera interface. As somewhat of a photography buff, I find this camera software to be unacceptable.
I hold out hope for root and a potential revamp of the camera software.
The screen button definitely works faster than the physical button, which sucks cause I was really looking forward to the physical button.
...........
mine is almost the exact opposite. almost immediately after touching the external button the picture takes. it takes slightly longer for the picture to take if i use the on screen button

Mine lags too, screen and hardware button..On another note.....
Seen this on another thread...Anyone notice we're missing camera options that were and still are in the description of the camera features for our phones? Quick shots, action cam etc.... Here's a link to the thread wich has a link to HTC's website where the features are detailed.

Oddly I find the camera physical button to be responsive, I guess maybe half a second lag? Much, much better than the Evo4G. And mine definitely doesn't refocus.
As I reread the posts on this thread, I'm starting to wonder if you guys realize the "shutter" button on the Evo3D has two degrees of pressure...like like a real SLR. Press to the first detent to get a focus lock, hold for as long as you like or recompose if need be, then press all the way down to take the photo. There isn't much lag for the latter step.
Yeah, I don't get much lag either, I'm pushing down the whole way and can snap off consecutive shots pretty quickly.
I took the OTA if that matters, don't remember it being laggy before either.

I heard that the newest camera app was still having issues close to release, so they pulled it til it could be fixed. However, I emailed HTC, and they said they weren't aware that the camera app was supposed to have those features.
Maybe you should drop HTC an email pointing them to what you found and see what they say. Worth a shot.

i'm tired of my phone's camera app locking up after using the hard camera button..it doesnt seem to do it if i use the on-screen button. i use the camera alot and its really frustrating. the lag is terrible as well. taking pics of a 10month old and 3 yr old is damn near impossible.
i miss my EVO. good thing wife still has hers.

Dissapointed in Camera

I'm wondering if I'm alone on this... Coming from the evo 4g, I am extremely underwhelemed by the quality of the camera on this phone.
It has a hard time not blurring things when you take it's picture, whereas my evo could literally snap a picture of a roller coaster at full speed with ease.
It doesn't expose properly and leaves flares everywhere and washed out areas of the picture, if the whole picture isn't destroyed.
You can forget about low light situations, if it's even at dusk the camera won't be able to see anything without a flash.
And then the camera button... Oh my. When I try to use it (and maybe I just have clumsy hands), I can't hold the phone still and then the half way down to focus feature always screws me up. If I press it all the way down, it doesnt bother focusing, it just takes a picture in whatever focus it has. So, I have to carefully press it halfway down, not move, and then take it after. FRUSTRATION.
Sorry for the vent, but the camera was one of my favorite features on the 4g and this phone has taken it from me... 3d or not.
I love the camera button. Just hold the camera button down to the first click for 2 seconds, let it focus, the fully press it down and keep your hand still. You'll get a good picture if you do this. But if you move your hand while its taking the picture, then of course youll get a blurry picture. That's user error, not camera error.

I have the same issue with camera button. I now ONLY use the screen button and it works much better.
I'm not sure it's a shake issue or not. But when using the camera button the often come out blurry and when using the screen button they are fine.
Adjusting settings does help but the camera still sucks balls. I'll take iPhone 4 cam vs this one any day.

I agree totally! The camera on this phone sucks just like it did on the OG Evo. Who the hell has time to play with all of those settings, taking numerous pictures of the same thing trying to get it right. He is correct we are not professional photographers and if we were we wouldn't be using our phone to do it with. We just want a simple point & shoot camera that gives us good pictures. Even as much as it pains me to say, but like the camera on the iPhone 4. I have taken a bunch of pics & videos with it, inside & out, low light and sunlight and I've always gotten a a great pic/video with auto settings unlike the camera on the OG Evo and Evo 3D. Hell any HTC phone for that matter. They make great phones but they always skimp when it comes to the camera.

I can post the original sized pictures and for comparison, they look good both ways.
I have to say it's very disingenuous to say that the camera sucks. I have two friends that are professional photographers and they both have been very impressed with the pictures I posted in the article. I looked to them both for advice on this article. Are they perfect? Of curse not. But they are still very good. I dont mean this to be disrespectful, but the problem also seems to be user, not just software. I also want to add that once you change the settings the settings typically stay that way so you don't always have to adjust them. At the end of the day there is a difference between having a bad sensor and having bad software. The EVO 3D is limited to bad software but can be helped by adjusting the settings.
One last thing. I originally posted the pictures in their true size. But thanks to Windows Live not playing nice with WordPress the entire article had to be redone and somehow the size was reduced. I can certainly post the original size later when I get home. I really hope the article helps people out with their picture quality. To those that don't agree, it's fine. Can't make everyone happy lol.
@major thanks for postin the article brosef lol

ONE MORE THING!! Dont use the camera button!! I completely forgot to mention that. But as much as I loved the idea of having a deticated button for the life of me they always come out blurry! I have no idea why. So I just use the onscreen button.
I cant get any good outside shots with the 3vo.... Look at this the first is shot with a sensation the other 3 are taken with my 3vo different settings each time nowhere near as clear focus is off, they are grainy just look plain terrible i literally just walked in from taking these

The problem i am having is the when taking pictures, is the picture always looks dimmed after taking the shot. I could take a picture of the beach on a sunny day and it would look in the picture as if was a coudly day.All my outside shots are dimmed. And forget low light shots.I played around with settings nothing seems to matter. Not sure why check out the picture below, this is a picture on the beach bright sunny day out . Wow. That's really bad. I'd say part of the problem is the white balance. I think the EVO's white balance problem is really affecting certain images than others. I'll be going down the shore this weekend. I'll take some beach shots. No reason it should look that bad 0_o

[Q]Fix Blurry Camera Photos

So most of us have had our photon for a while now. This is just a general question to see if anyone has any thoughts on this.
When I got my photon I was able to take descent photos of still objects and people etc. However the more I use my Photon's camera the worse the photos seem to turn out. Now the phone cant auto focus anything. everything is blurry.
See two photos attached.
My camera settings:
Scenes: auto
Effects: normal
Flash: auto
Picture Mode: single shot
Resolution: WideScreen
Video Resolution: HD(720p)
Exposure: 0 & -1 & -2(all same results)
Storage: internal
Phone
System Version: 45.2.5
Rooted
Unlocked (Pudding)
Edit: Also tried replacing the blurCamera apk with a back up that I had from a while ago. No Luck
I was just wondering if anyone had any possible thoughts on how to fix it?
have you used it as a rock and throw it on one of the Sprint employ's before?
and now seriously...
try to change to Macro, get a lock on some close item and return to Normal?

fx camera or camera 360 can be nice
you also have advanced camera and lightbox.
So I tried Camera 360 and the first several photos didnt work. I was like &%#$ and just took photo after photo after photo. then one came out clear. I opened the regular camera app and kept taking photos and they started focusing. My guess would be that the camera may have gotten stuck or something or maybe camera 360 just hit the spot and got things working again. I am gonna keep a close eye on this one.
Going out later for some night life fun and I am going to fill that sd card up.

I've never felt like the camera on this phone was very good. even in good lighting the pictures always look grainy. Also the color on the screen seems to be off some. All reds are more noticeable on the phone. Photos of people always look like they are blushing.
Stock camera app is pretty fail for me as well. Very blurry and the colors are off.
About every 3rd picture I take is just 'ok' the rest are unusable for any thing.
I did notice however that Panoramic Pictures are very clear and colored correctly.
I realize that we are working with a cell phone camera, but I do expect much better than this, especially considering how good my epics camera was - considering it was a cell phone.
This is the only thing on this phone I really can't stand, there are a few annoyances, but this one is bad.

Using the onscreen button, make sure you hold the button, let it focus, then release for it to take the picture.
Speaking of the button options. I wonder if we will have a rom that allows the physical button to react like the on screen button.

The problem is simple.
Start camera application, tap or hold camera button to focus. As soon as it gets perfect focus it jumps back out. It will almost never stay focus regardless of setting.
have you ever tried tapping the screen, say for instance if you're taking a picture of someone, tap their face, and it should focus on where you tapped.
have you tried cleaning the lens? sometimes when the lens is dirty it messes with the focus when I try and take pictures.
I have the same issue.
At first I assumed that my settings weren't correct, tried a number of 'fixes' that seemed logical and here I am.
It happens more often than not, but 99% of my pics are my kids, you got ONE shot at capturing a great moment.
blurred...
I have taken random shots of random objects and nothing will keep the focus...focused.
One second brilliant clarity of HD candy as it zeroes in, and °dink° blurrrrrred again.
sucks, i ditched my hd2 windroid for this camera so any info, possibly a bug fix kind of thing is what I'm looking for.
My hd2 took pinkish pics, so I'm no stranger to 'gimped' code.

Not to pour molten lead in your wound Glacier...but the camera fell as I was taking 'myspace looking' pictures to post on facebook...aaaand this is my carpet. My Grandmother doesn't probably want pictures of the Greatgrandcarpets.
If only 100% of the kidpics looked THIS good, on purpose.
lulz...
try a different camera app like camerafx or vignette and see if you still have the issue. if you dont, its obviously not hardware...

That picture detail is WOW... That happened on a drop? MySpace looking pictures? Dude I'm so lost... All I know is your camera takes better pictures while falling to the ground and no human operation than I do with mine. #fail :banghead:

Ashamedly I know the term myspace picture. It's taking a picture from above.
The extremely pleasing picture of a very mundane subject occured when the camera fired as I grabbed it up and knicked the softkey with my finger, my screen sensitivity is extreme (gotta tweak those values...).
Here's another wtf picture for the books...woke up at 5am for early contract, made coffee, reached for creamer.
Groggy and blinded by exhaustion, I confused the two because of the unfortunate placement.
Steamy espresso berry coffee.
1 picture out of 500+ pictures and this was automatically inserted into the "perfect picture" album...wtf???
THIS?!?

What ROM are you using? Maybe its the ROM. I'm using an older build of bullet proof I believe.

I've had the same problem before, but all it takes is cleaning the lense even if it doesn't look dirty.. just make sure you use something that will not scratch it! But trust me, I've had the same pproblem, and that fixes it every time.
And I'm using bulletproof 2.5 or whatever. I've only used x's roms, so if you are using someone else's..

a simple question gets a simple answer.
try knocking your res down to 5mp, that helped my old phone, plus it made it quicker, and still had good print/display quality.

[Q] The camera doesnt focus in dark rooms or on objects in dark areas....

Hello everyone, I may be missing something but i was playing around with the camera on this great phone and realized that the normal press and hold of the shutter button to have the camera focus in a dark room does not work. If you press and hold the camera takes shots in burst mode. If you press it once the flash lights up dimly but does not focus properly and then flashes full blast but takes a blurry photo. This is very annoying because im used to my samsung s3 and note 2 that would focus by holding the shutter button in a dark room and then release to take a clear focused picture.
Am I missing something? for a camera that is good in low light and have 5 levels of flash intensity it seems to make no sense to not be able to focus in a dark room. whats the point of having a camera with a flash that cant take a picture in the dark or semi dark room right?
let me know if you are having this issue, if you think i'm doing something wrong or maybe if ill just have to deal with it until HTC comes out with an update. if it happens to you we can all call 8664498358 and press 0 and let HTC know this is very annoying I have gotten through to a live person instantly by calling this number to ask why in the world the power saver feature is persistent in the notification drop down....there reason....dummy instructions and to many service returns for "bad batteries"
UPDATE: I have spoke with HTC on a separate issue and mentioned this to the guy i spoke with and he has not had any other feedback on this issue, how ever he advised me to have anyone who is having this issue please contact them, he was not able to duplicate it yet because he in not in a dark room but he said he will try it when he can (Thanks Fred). the more people who report the issue and provide feedback the better chances they can get it resolved, I am having this issue on my wifes phone and my phone. you may need to focus on a far object and then try to focus on a near object in a dark room, like a room with less then low light. In my case it was in a room only lit by an old crt tv (bedroom) how ever he advised me the more feedback the better, they are very interesting in hearing from us and he is very aware of the xda forums as well as other android forums out there.
so no one cares. nice
So much for the community. No one seems to care even though plenty of you guys have looked and all own this phone. Pretty disgraceful.
EDIT: Sorry if I sound rude or condescending, Just surprised no one has commented yet or has said they are having this issue, personally I use my phone for taking photos in less then low light situations often and if this issue cant get resolved its going to really suck. HTC can fix it but needs the feedback to know that its widespread and not just a fluke, although they do know that its happening on my wifes phone and my phone.
I've tried it, and it doesn't auto-focus either. Manually focusing before taking the picture works though.

Thank you very much for the reply, I have tried to manual focus and it doesnt work for me in very dark situations. sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't though. I have noticed if I focus on something distant in a low light area and then back on something near in a very dark area it will not focus. Every other camera I have used on a phone has lit up the flash long enough and bright enough to focus and turn the focus indicator green how ever this camera seems to focus on speed and seems to not care about weather the picture is focused, it doesn't turn red or beep or anything it just takes a blurry photo. it takes more blurry photos then clear it seems to me in low light or less then low light conditions.
If you could please contact HTC and let them know I would be very happy and hopefully they get this issue fixed, I have called HTC a few times for other issues. yesterday my lock screen kept saying today was cinco de mayo and for the life of me I couldnt figure out how to turn that off and I also am not happy about the Gallery app showing every single friend photo including horribly low resolution ones not to mention the persistant power saver notification in the drop down thats so stupid! but when I talked to them they mentioned the camera issue and wanted me to explain to them cause they saw the notes based on my phone number and previous calls, they would like all the feedback they can get.
This isn't just a T-Mobile HTC One issue, my international is doing this too.
I'd be interested to know from someone that doesn't have this problem, in a dark room, if you tap on the screen to focus, does the light come on?
All other phones I've had would light the area to focus, as you've said above this just tries to focus in the dark. How can that be right?
I've tried different ROM's and firmware, always tries to focus in the dark. Why on earth would it do this!?!?!
Yeah I noticed that problem too when trying to take a picture of a person in a life like Iron Man costume in a theater Friday night.

lets get this fixed!
Boy I'm glad I'm not the only one. I know we are about fixing stock and nodding and what not but please start a ticket on the issue. HTC has a place on there website for this or you can call them.
