[Q] About CF-Root - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there.
I have asked the same question several times in Chains thread now but had no replies from anyone for some reason, so thought I'd ask here instead.
Basically, I want to root my phone but keep the stock rom and have clockworkmod recovery so I can flash a new rom (MIUI when it's stable), but not too sure what to do. After speaking to samjpullen he pointed me in the direction of Chains thread. For what I want, is this the right thing to do?
If so, I already downloaded the Odin thingy. But I need a .tar file which I think must be the CF-root downloads further down in the thread. If so which one do I need? And is there anything more I need from there?
Sorry for the long question, just want to be safe doing this. Thanks in advance.

In phone type *#1234#, note the last 3 characters from each line (they will all be the same). Use odin to flash the same file from Chains thread.

Pick one to match your firmware and region .
Flash through Odin as PDA only .
You now have stock rom with non stock rooted Kernel and CWM .
jje

So after I have entered that into the dialer, do I use the last 3 characters of the PDA one for the cf-root download? KE2?

Yep KE2 root .
jje

Thanks a lot!
What are the consequences of flashing the wrong .tar file?
edit: nevermind, I went ahead and did it anyway. I don't know why I worried so much, it was so easy and done in a few minutes.

I want to use the Cognition Rom and its based on KE7. My phone is KE2. Can I flash the KE7 kernel from CF-Root and then flash the Cognition Rom?

Why not do what it says on this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081368
It's fairly simple and well explained.
I'm sure you if you got stuck at any point you could look through the thread for posts from people who got stuck at the same point and if you don't find anything a you could post a question in the thread.
There's a site associated with this particular Rom too which is very helpful.
http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/IRC.php
It would be a similar case with any of the other custom roms. The each have their own thread filled with priceless information.
I'm using VillianRom 1.4 myself so I can heartily recommend it. Great battery and has a handy app called VillianTweaks that allows for extra customization.
right so this is for a rom only?? i dont wants rom i jus wanted the latest firmware so i cannot have kf2 update no??? i dont want a rom just want the firmware updates

Odin has parts labeled as PDA, Phone and CSC. If you double click on the Frankenstein package it will extract 3 .tar packages labelled with ............ PDA, Phone and CSC at the start. Just like a puzzle you put the .tar archives in the corresponding labelled section of Odin and flash. Find more instructions in the thread from where you downloaded the Frankenstein package. If you scroll down there is actually a guide for how to use Odin to Flash.
intratech thanks i understand i would flash using them 3 files but what happens to my root will i need to re root?
so let me get this straight in Odin i have the frankenstein XXKF2 i have the PDA PHONE and CSC files i use these to flash with in download mode right??
Yes. Seriously, read the first post of the thread. It has a guide with screenshots to help you.
You will have to reroot. There is also a guide there in the first post for that.
ok thanks again 1more question i think where do i get the insecure kernal to do step 4 of quick root???
i have the secure one which is the
XXKF2 Stock Kernel: http://www.multiupload.com/HIKNP08JZA
which i do after insecure one ??
It doesn't really matter which insecure one you use. I still use Insecure KDD kernel to root the device and then flash back the stock kernel after.
OK just waiting for my phone to charge up abit then will do the flash thanks very very much for your help...best to have over 50% when you flash right?
have u a link for a insecure kernal? does that basically mean anyone apart from the right one?
OK i have found the one u used on my laptop thanks

previously if i used it heavy through my working day phone was 30-40% by time i go home...i used it heavy yesterday and went home from work with 67% still thats taking of charge at 6:30am and got home 5pm
yesterday did charge again before was fully drained and got 20hours med-heavy usage
hopefully things get even better with 2.3.4
EDIT: i am only using the stock firmware and no roms
Everybody hopes that things will get better with 2.3.4. When will we get it?

[Q] Roms and all tha Jazz

Hello,
i would like some guidance on the rooting side of things. with every page i read im getting more and more confused.
i have installed/flashed litening rom.
ive used the sim unlock tool to unlock my phone.
im confused on all of the unsecure and secure stuff.
i would like my phone back to how i had it when i bought it, without the root access etc.
am i right in thinking that i would need the latest stock secure kernal which i would flash in exactly the same way as i flashed litening? or am i getting the wrong end of the stick.
or would i have to flash the specific three firmware (im not bothered about having all the three stuff on it but if i have to then so be it)
You need to follow Chainfire thread,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Don't get too much confused, its simple.
BTW- Aren't you already rooted as you are on Litening ROM!

Hope that makes sense?

where do i find the csc to go with this?
If you want to get it back to stock "back to how it was when I bought it", don't use any KG firmware unless you're from Poland or Brazil - IIRC, they're the only 2 areas that KG firmware is "official", i.e., flashable via Kies.
Sounds like you'll need a KF firmware. If you can't remember what your firmware originally was, try this:
http://fus.nanzen.se/
- will also tell you your latest available official update.
KG and KH 2.3.4
Rest is 2.3.3
Edit - see you've got KF3 - for your scenario, 99% sure it's the right choice.
ok so ive downloaded that one, it was a self extracting.exe file
i now have a tar file.
do i use odin again and put this tar in the pda part?
Anyone??

if the package one has one .tar file then yes.
keep in mind you will not have root access after this
Brilliant thanks all

Also after reverting back to stock roms, do your self a favor and buy a USB JIG (Samsung galaxy S JIG) from ebay for like 10 dollars. You can use this to reset the Binary Counter in Download mode, before you ship of any phone for say Warranty issues

[Q] Does rooting require exact same kernal? Galaxy s2

I am new to the android .and bought my first galaxy s2. I will follow the s2 one click root to root my phone. I need to know if I need the same kernal as my device? My original kernal is JPKG5. do I need jpkg5 insecure kernal and then a jpkg5 secure kernal to root my phone? Or can I change my kernal to some other kernal of my choice?
my galaxy s2 gets pretty hot if I play intense games like asphalt or star legends, it even gets hot if I use mobile internet like EDGE (i guess its 2g internet nott sure) and browse the internet. The battery life sucks. I keep wifi, gps off and it last like 7 hours if I use mobile internet. Heard a different kernal might help.
One last question, what is the purpose of titanium backup? Do I get to restore my phones original self back again easily? Like will it unroot itself and return to the original gingerbread rom if I decide to change to cynogenmod? If titanium backup does not do that, then how can I unroot my phone and then get back to my original gingerbread rom?
Thanks alot for your help...

Welcome to Android I am not sure about the kernel. The purpose of TB is that you can backup all your apps and data and if you flash a new custom rom you can use TB to restore all the apps and data. Its a very powerful application. You can always flash the original stock rom downloaded from Intratechs thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278. Then you will have an unrooted phone. Beware of the custom counter!!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
If you are international S2 (i9100) user use CF-Root instead SOC:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Dont use CF-Root or SOC if you are AT&T user, there is specific threads on how to root AT&T devices.
CF-Root is 1 step only, this means for a non experienced user like you (as it's your first android device) less chance to screw up something.
Follow carefully the instructions.
Be sure Kies installed but NOT running (kill kies process) because kies block odin = semi bricked phone.
Takes about 30 seconds
If you need more info feel free to ask here or pm me

im a bit confused, all those stock kernals in that link u gave are kernels and rom? Like if I have cynogenmod rom installed in my fone and then flash my phone again using one of those stock kernels/roms, I would be flashing back from cynogenmod to gingerbread 2.3.3 (JPKG5)?
Also what is the custom counter?
Thanks

Cf-root seems like it will limit me to only one kernel, is it a fact? Is it possible for a gs2 user to use any kernel he desires? because I would like to use a better kernel than jpkg5 but stick to the original gingerbread rom 2.3.3. Then mod it to stop loading the so called bloat somehow using an app. Plus I found cf-root to be a little confusing, can u help me understand this? Cf-root will use the kernel inside the phone and leave it intact plus give me root? Or will cf-root change my kernel permanently?
Thanks for all the trouble everyone, if its ok ill ask more questions if I get stuck, but will try my best to figure it out myself first...thanks again...

If you flash one of those ROMs you will flash from cyanogen to your original. The custom counter counts how many times you flash a custom rom / kernel - it can be a problem if you have to send your phone in for repair. Read more about it.

cf-root is an original kernel with root+cwm inserted. No it dosnt lock you to a single kernel, its just the most easy way to root your phone while keeping your stock rom. When you are rooted you then can flash any kernel or custom rom you want.
You only need to pickup the same (ex: kh3, ki4, kf1 etc..) for the root process, this to have full compatibility during root with the stock rom on your phone, but after successfull root you can flash any kernel/rom for the s2

Back to stock galaxy s2

Hello how i can back to stock my galaxy s2? i rooted and put checkrom works nice but i want to learn how get back to stock again im confused
I didnt wrote down the pda version and kernel before install checkrom and rooted what recommend me to do?
thanks.
Just flash official firmware package from Intratech's XDA firmware thread via Odin.
Use your Product Code (sometimes found on your box) on the Chek Fus Download website to find your original PDA etc (if you're not 100% sure) or search the first couple thread posts for match.
Follow his flash instructions and you're done

It also includes instructions of using odin and flashing the downloaded firmware .... if you are rooted take a nandroid backup every time you flash custom from stock ........ that ways you'll always have a backup of the stock firmware ......

Actually all the firmwares provided in the thread are stock ..........
If you are a Noob i would not recommend cyanogenmod though it is pretty good but i've heard it's for advanced users and stuff ........ why do you need to flash stock is my primary question ........... use this thread only http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
You need to update latest firmware for your region as a KIES update is there / on the way?
Find out the latest firmware for your region to flash via http://fus.nanzen.se/ it will provide you with the stock firmware your phone should have after selecting the specific region.
You need to update latest firmware irrespective of region (like Me)
Just download the latest firmware available in the 2nd or 3rd section of the thread. in this case 2.3.6 (KK2 or KK5).
In case of any more issues post back.
so I tried kk2 and kk5 and kk2 gave me no service, and kk5 failed to even install. I'm at a loss. I really want CF root, but can't install it on the stock eg30 that I've been using as my stock rom. SO what next? Any other way to figure out which stock firmware from that link will work for my phone?
hello???
Is there anyone who can help me figure this out?????

Restore to stock firmware.

Guys,
I know that theres a lot of topics about this over the forum, but I couldnt find one that is up to date.
Im running the remix rom 1.7 and Id like to restore my phone to factory state.
Could someone direct me to the best way to do this?
Thanks in advance

That depends on whether you just want the stock rom to use it or to send it in for repairs.
If you just want a stock rom to use: Just flash a stock firmware with Odin and there you go.
If you need a S2 in its "original state":
1.) Flash an older bootloader and use a USB-Jig (see the USB-Jig thread about that) to set the Custom Rom Counter back (oh I forgot: There's also the possibility to use the "Triangle away"-app instead of a Jig)
2.) Flash a "full" (Pit File, PDA, CSC and Phone) stock firmware with Odin

Go to sammobile.com,
Download a stock ROM closest to that of the OS you want (GB, ICS),
Put file in PDA section of Odin,
Flash ROM,
If your custom binary counter is not zero, buy a USB Jig off eBay for like £2,
Your done.
