I am coming from an Evo 4G. My apartment has always had sub par reception on sprint but now with the Evo 3D it is becoming irritating. In the same places I had 3G, I now am roaming. In a place where I had 2-3 4G bars, I have barely 1. I have tried updating my prl, my profile. One thing that I will note is that 4G on the 1 reported bar is about as good as the 3 bars on the old Evo. However 3G reception is definitely not very good overall.
My question - as I approach the one month I have had this phone, I wonder if I should:
A. Exchange the phone for another 3D. Has anyone heard of reception issues related to hardware? How has this device compared for everyone to the old Evo as far as reception? Do I have a dud?
B. Return it and get an original Evo.
C. Something else - call sprint ask for airwave or something like that.
I appreciate any advice anyone has. Thanks in advance.
My radio bars do show a tad lower, but I havent really noticed any issues.
I am willing to be some future PRL updates will help this.
My OG Evo was the same around launch time too
Had the same issue vs my old Eris on Verizon. Sprint reset the network which helped some, but I wound up manually changing the PRL to a USCellular one. Gained 4 bars.

so PRL updates meaning non-sprint developer created? so 2 votes in favor of waiting it out?

Have some friends with different carriers test your area, see which is stronger and use their PRL. That's what I did, told that to the Sprint rep while getting my MSL and he liked the idea (I did hint I would leave if I couldn't get a better signal).

Had the exact same issue and well I returned mine this last Sunday and got a new 3d and well it's better so far. Last week Sprint updated prl over the air and it worked for a minute and then it was back to roaming, dropping calls, battery draining like crazy, sensitive power button. I know it's only Monday but I have not dropped one call or went into roaming yet.

Verizon is strongest but if I take that PRL then I wont have Sprint 4G will I?
Also how would you load the other PRL?
Thank you!
I had the power button sensitivity issue - where the button presses momentarily caused the power menu to come up instead of going into sleep mode. So I took that phone into Sprint yesterday and they gave me a new phone, within 30 days. Any replacement should be a new phone and not a refurbished one within the initial 30 days of purchase.
Point being is that they new phone to me doesn't pick up a signal as well as the other Evo 3D that I had. We have an Airave at work and the old phone would have max bars and crystal clear, today first day with the new phone was at about 2 or so bars and the one phone call was very well lets just say not so crystal clear.
Recommend you take the phone back and ask them to test it. They can test the phone for you, and worst case swamp it out for you. Don't recommend PRL hacks since those tend to get people kicked out of Sprint due to excessive roaming.

Sprint 4G is on a different radio than data/voice, WiMax vs CDMA/1Rxx.
If you search for say "carrier name" PRL July 2011, you should be able to find a current file. Download the file, open QPST Service Programming, click the tab "Roam" and put the file location in "Preferred Roaming". I don't think you have a dud. Rather than bars, what are your actual speeds using something like Speed Test from the Market. I've had well....more than 3 of these E3D's, lol, and only 1 got half-ass decent speeds out of the box. With some re-provisioning and data reset methods in the General section I got all of them to set up correctly on the network.

That's about right for Sprint 3G. It's within the 3G range for Sprint, anyway.
After removing the proxies I went from like 500kbps to 1.3mbps in my house...1-2 bars...sometimes 3....
Today I was in an area that was previously almost a deadzone, no bars but no roaming.....I got 1.5mbps-2.1mbps!??? It was phenomenal. The 4G in that area only netted my like 7mbps, even though 4g in my area (which I cannot get in my house) I've gotten up to 18mbps before.
Call sprint, report deadzones. If nobody tells them they won't do anything.

If you live in the boonies.
It's fast in California.
I live in NYC.
Just did a speed test and got 11 kbps. Pretty sure NYC isn't in the boonies.
Live in Chicago burbs, as I type this, roaming alert came on
On my.EVO 4G don't think I ever saw the roam alert. On this 3VO it roams few times a day. That NEVER used to happen.

3G service when I had my Lotus and Moment were actually impressive for a mobile device...I was surprised.
3G Service the day I got my Evo4G was VERY impressive....and it just declined steadily from there. For a while I thought it was me screwing with the phone too much....but 2 and 2, etc....
The 3G speeds I get on my Evo3D are right in line with the Evo4G and the steady decline in service in my area (probably proportionate to some of the (now) 500,000 android activiations every effing day)....but the radio is like 1-1.5 bars lower than my Evo would average....which sucks. Performance isn't affected unless it's a fringe situation, like the bathroom at work...which sucks, I like to read CNN when I poop, but I digress.
I expect radio updates will help a lot, but, I ain't touchin' any of that until we have some action out of HTC or failing that one of our brilliant devs does what they are bound to do anyway...
...I've gotta admit, I've been F5ing the living fnck out of the two root threads in development and they are fascinating and at times exciting....I recommend it, it's better than the drunken 6-year-old mob mentality that has tended to coalesce in General lately--I haven't even bothered with Q&A....

So flash a verizon PRL and watch your usage....once you hit 300mb put back the sprint PRL...it's like you are throttling yourself, lol.
Seriously, if Verizon is that much better where you are do it....where I am Verizon has a stronger signal but they also have MANY MANY MANY times more customers than Sprint, so, their network is way oversold and over utilized....Sprint not so much....so Sprint has weaker signals and faster speeds on average.
In terms of voice, Sprint is the clear winner where I am but for some reason Data is just the worst.
How would I go about flashing a Verizon PRL? I have the PRL file but I'm unsure of how to actually flash it.
Did you try calling Sprint and getting them to reprovision your phone?

My mistake for saying 'flashing', force of habit...
First thing you have to do is get your MSL, you can either call Sprint and ask for it or use the popular method (with CDMA workshop) that's currently around the top of the Dev section... I usually just called for it, but, for geekliness I had to rip it out myself and it was an effin' snap to do, so, just follow those directions to get it...
....then there is a thread floating around here (and/or the Evo4g forum) with a number of Verizon and Verizon/Altell hybrid PRL's.....download a couple...31337 is good I hear
then you punch in some ## codes, load the PRL file, reboot and ***POOF***, you are on verizon--still consuming roaming data and voice--but you aren't limited to 1x....
EDIT: Don't forget to hit "menu:commit changes" to reboot--or you won't make any changes.

I used to live in the Des Moines area of Iowa and the 3G was awesome...moved to Chicago and noticed its about dial up...don't know how you guys got/get by on just 3G. The EVO never went off 4G...
What's really sad is I could do speed tests on 3G in IA that are only slightly slower than my 4G tests here.
The signal strength is just HORRIBLE on this phone for me.
Places where I was getting at least 1-2 bars before, I get a nice "X" now (or roaming).
I have my brothers Evo 4G right next to my 3VO and he's got 2 bars while I got none.
Is it like this for everyone or should I just go replace the phone?
Try updating your prl and profile..
If no difference,
Call sprint and go to "troubleshooting" department
They can reset some stuff on their end and force prl and profile updates
If still no difference the buy a nexus s 4g and see a real "signal problem". To make you feel better about the evo3d

Lol.. thanks brah.
I plan on calling Sprint tomorrow.
And I actually had the Nexus S 4G for two weeks before I got this phone and signal was actually good with that one. I had 3-4 bars to where the Evo4G would have 1-2.
Probably the best signal phone I've ever used.
Thanks again though.
Mine is identical to the Epic...so either the Epic signal strength sucked or they are both fine. I do notice that I don't get a signal inside our local Walmart and in our home we barely get a signal. I just assumed it had something to do with the service since T-Mobile was slightly worse (at least with Sprint we don't get dropped calls in our home).
I read a lot of people were claiming much better data reception with the Photon over their old phone, so I thought I'd put it to the test. My old phone was an Evo4G and I still have one in the house in use (completely stock running Android 2.3), so I did a side-by-side comparison test to the Photon and this is what I got using SpeedTest.net:
Tests on 3G network
Evo4G: 279kbps/157kbps/1026ms (download/upload/ping)
Photon4G: 401kbps/211kbps/ 793ms (download/upload/ping)
Results: Photon was 44% faster on download, 34% faster on upload and 23% faster ping
Tests on 4G network
Evo4G: 3203kbps/188kbps/357ms (download/upload/ping)
Photon4G: 6454kbps/563kbps/274ms (download/upload/ping)
Results: Photon was 101% faster on download, 199% faster on upload and 23% faster ping
It is also important to note that the Evo had a lot of trouble running the test in 3G because the signal was so weak. For each good test it took about 10 tries while the Photon had no problems and I never had to retry a test in 3G on the Photon. Results shown are the average of the fastest 8 runs out of 10. This is except for the Evo 3G runs which were the average of only 6 runs because of the difficulty I had getting it to run at all on 3G. Thus, the 3G runs are biased towards the Evo since I removed more than two very slow runs and the differences on 3G may be understated (Evo may be slower than I am reporting on 3G).
Conclusion: Data Reception Rocks on the Photon4G!
This is what I've seen in numerous reviews and although I can't get a hold of one myself yet to do my own testing against my aging Epic, customers have been complaining of reception issues. Any word on others who might be experiencing this issue around you? It might just be a bad batch received.

You misread the data. The Photon is much faster than the Evo4G. The higher the uploading and downloading numbers, the faster the data transfer. The smaller the ping number, the faster the data transfer. The Photon was faster in all measurements.
I will confirm AGAIN that the Motorola Photon absolutely has much better signal strength and faster, more stable data connection on 3G and 4G. This is the main reason I choose to keep it and put my EVO 3D back in the box and in my bottom drawer.
Wow that's impressive! How can anybody argue with that, being you have tested with all those different phones? Good to know. Thanks.
PS: Shhhh.... keep it on the DL!!! Let's hope Sprint doesn't get wind of this awesome reception or they will probably pull a Verizon and cripple the hell out of it so it barely works. Then we're all back to craptastic again.
I have to disagree with you about the Photon's reception 'cause mine SUCKS. I tried updating my profile and it didn't help. I tried updating my PRL several times and each time I got an error. I even tried going to a different part of the hous to update my PRL and it still failed with an error.
I can't even get this phone to connect to the market! Everytime I try I either get a timed out message or a no connection message.
And to add insult to injury it won't let me do a factory reset ( so I can return this piece f junk) until the battery is at 25%. The stupid thing has been on the charger for at least 45 minutes and it won't go past 20%.
On the positive side the voice connection seeems to work just fine. But I didn't get this to be a voice only phone I got it because every review I read said that it had fantastic data reception.

I really think I'm gonna just have to bite the bulle & pay Sprint's ETF so I can try T-Mobile. I'm having even worse reception problems on my Epic 4G.

Even worse on Epic = Photon Reception is *****in
But before you pay the ETF maybe you should just go grab a t-mo phone on contract for a day or two, see if the signal works for you, if it does then drop sprint and have your number ported to Tmo. This could save you the ETF if TMo isn't any better.
Depending on your area, TMos network signal will probably be stronger since they are GSM - takes less antenna to cover area with GSM than CDMA.

I did two factory resets & it didn't make any difference.
I might try another Photon. I called Sprint about my EVO 4g's reception problems & they were able to get it working again.
I don't know why I didn't think to try that with the Photon. That was a very nice phone
Or maybe I'll crawl back to Verizon. Verizon just installed a new tower by me in august and they have 4G in my area.
In my area, (Batavia, ny) I get maybe 1 to 2 bars. This has been the case since my OG EVO. But I do noticing I'm roaming a lot more now. Plus my 3g connection is terrible. I've heard this phone does have some signal issues. Would flashing new a new Rom flash radios as well? I was worried they were just borkes from restoring a nand backup or something. I am considering just bring this back to best buy for the S3. I have maybe a 2 weeks left to decide. But I did buy an otterbox defender case, so I have invested in this phone already. I wonder if the problem is hardware related or will new radios (when they come out) will fix the problem? Any recommendations or advice?

New Network and different PRL !
I have the new Evo 4g LTE and I took one back because of this issue you are having. It has happened on the new one though not quite as bad. Not sure if they improved the signal or if it was the phone. I live in Houston,Tx. which is one of the cities where LTE is launching first so I know they are working on the towers here. By the way they are only giving you 2 weeks to return phones now at Best Buy and Sprint. The biggest thing I have noticed is that the Evo 4g LTE has a different PRL # than my other two Android Sprint phones. I believe this is because it is going to run on the new LTE network and I also think it has something to do with signal being different. The bottom line if I were you I would take the Evo back that you have now and exchange it for a new Evo and if you are in a City that is getting LTE in the first round Just wait like two more weeks and your signal issues will go away ! You could always root until then and run a different PRL also!

You sir, are lucky. See mine
could part of the issue is alltel being bought my verizon and sprint loosing some towers and roaming contracts?
I've had my Evo LTE since launch, and have had call issues since the beginning. I came from the OG Evo, and knew Sprint had bad coverage in some areas around me; but this has been much much worse. I would say 4 out 5 calls drop immediately upon connection. I will have half or more signal when I call and as soon as it connects it drops off and I look and there are 0 bars. Oh, I'm also not in a town which has the updated network/LTE. I had done the HTC Unlock immediately, so I was nervous about trying to take my phone back. But thanks to this amazing guide, I can get it back to stock. Has anyone else had issues like this fixed by getting a new phone?
My main question is who do I take it back to? I have the BB Black Tie insurance, so I was thinking that would be easiest/quickest exchange. But I wasn't sure how they would react since there is nothing visibly wrong with the phone. And I'm sure as soon as I get in Best Buy it will work flawlessly .

I have not. I'm assuming it's okay to do this running S-Off and custom Rom (CM10)?
I have also noticed terrible 3G speeds, much much worse than my OG Evo.

I'm in north okc and have the exact same issue. I've been in numerous lengthy phone calls with sprint about this and I'm on my second phone to no avail. My girls phone is the same. This phone does not like the okc area whatsoever. I remember my 3d was the same. I am currently at the point of leaving sprint for this. I love this phone but its driving me crazy. And let's not get into peak hours data drop.... I'm so frustrated with sprint right now.

Well, I think I'm going to go back full stock tomorrow and run it by a Sprint repair store. Guys in IRC channel recommended I have them check my radios. I work with a guy who has a Samsung on Sprint and doesn't have great signal, but better than mine! I'm so torn right now, I know if i switched to Verizon I'd have great LTE signal all over town, but I wanted to support Sprint and see if they could fix their network. Now I'm regretting it but stuck in contract. But then again if I were to switch, there aren't really any phones I'm interested in on Verizon...
I love this phone but, I am.pissed and tired of repair stores, and sprint technical, and supervisors, and credits. They can see that most of my disconnects are device related and still won't switch me to another device or something. I really don't even want to switch. But, I totally believe its network being upgraded and this device is designed for something other than what's offered in my area.

Send it in to htc and have them fix it. They warranty it for a year.
I had one that dropped calls but my second one is perfect.
Well, I'm going to try to get to the Sprint store later this afternoon. Will update here with result. If it's just their **** network, think they might let me out of contract if I ***** enough? If they do, then where do I go? I freaking love this phone, but if it can't make phone calls I can't keep it...
--Update--
I went to a Sprint store on Saturday to see what they said. As soon as I mentioned dropped calls and crappy speeds he started apologizing. Evidently they have begun the network update in Oklahoma, which means that a lot of towers are down or not at normal capacity. He said this has been going on most of the year and that the network should be back at normal capacity by the end of the year. He also said he had heard LTE by June-July of 2013, but was just a rumor. He reset my profile and PRL and said it might help. I'm going to stick it out as of now and hope they can produce a solid LTE network. I do really love Sprint and their fight for unlimited data, just hope they keep it up.
Dropped Calls
I, too, have had terrible luck with calls dropping with this phone. I was on the OG EVO and did not have these issues at all. From looking at this site s4gru.com I do not believe that my area (Indy) should be under any network updating as of yet. However, it also looks like Oklahoma should not be, either - so maybe they started early
In the end...my old EVO did not have issues up to the day I upgraded, and the new EVO has had issues since day 1. I do not believe this is a network issue, but more of a hardware/radio/phone design issue. I hoped the newest updates (including radio) would help, but I am still dropping calls way too often.
