[Q] Away for a long time; which ROM? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been away on holiday for a short time and boy....development has sure moved fast
quick few questions:
1. I'm on gingerblur, do I need to SBF back to stock to flash new custom ROMs?
2. Regarding above question....I need to unlock the bootloader first using the unlocking package on briefmobile or the pudding thread if I can find it right?
3. Which Gingerbread based ROM seems to run the most bug free/useable as a daily driver right now?
thanks!

I like KennethPenn's ROM. Running smoothly, so far. I haven't had it on long enough to make a definitive comment, but it is stable and fast.

its not rooted, you are going to have to flash back to 1.8.3, make sure you use the full build and not just the OTA update, unlock the bootloader, flash 2.3.4 then root. make sure you flash this build from ken theres reports of hard bricking if you use other sources.

so first I SBF back to 1.8.3
root
unlock BL
flash 2.3.4 (which one? HKTW? or the one linked above?)

The new build is fully rooted thanks to kenneth. Everything seems to work.

Flash the one in the link above by Kennethpenn. The HKTW one will give you battery life issues and a non-working fingerprint scanner, while other sources could result in a hard brick if you ever want to downgrade. You'll need the unlocked bootloader version of CWM to flash it, not the existing charge mode one. You dont need root to install it, and I believe that particular version of 2.3.4 is already rooted. So,
unlock BL
flash cwm
flash Kennethpenn's 2.3.4.

It's ironic because the official motorola OTA is the one that is giving everyone trouble. That is this one.
If you want to get gingerbread safely you will first need to install 2.3.4 with an unlocked bootloader, follow these directions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1142674
You can now flash roms if you performed that successfully, I would recommend this one since it is safe and great:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159385
Cheers, pm me if you need help
The stock ota is safe if your not unlocked or anything.
But the stock ota motor has put something to prevent your from going to older sbf. The version kenneth has made is perfect. And still gives u stock rom with extras

O ok thanks so sounds like kens version is the best way to go

I have a related question:
Is the GingerBread 2.3.4 Motorola update out via OTA? I mean, "officially", so it can be installed on a stock unrooted unlocked Atrix. I read the update will be launch end of July.
Thanks in advance.

You can brick your device if you are not on 1.83 before you flash gingerbread on your atrix....at least that is what I understand from it. You can't go from 1.26 to gingerbread, you have to go from 1.83 right to gingerbread. And you have to unlock your bootloader otherwise you might screw something up.
PS. Please check your grammar man. Unless you're from like France, take the time and type things the right way.

nope! its out in an SBF file I believe. As of right now, you will have to root your device and install 1.83 before you can flash gingerbread on it...I haven't installed a rom on here in like a months so I've been outta the loop I guess

It wont load at all with 1.2.6 but that's not what is causing bricks going from 2.3.4 to any older sbf with the stock ota is causing the bricks. Kenneth build you can go back, and is safe to use.

Since it hasn't come out yet, no one knows if ota 2.34 we flashed will accept official updates properly. But if that's the case devs will definitely figure out ways to extract the files needed to install them either through fastboot or cwm most likely. You'll want to be unlocked and rooted.

looks like i'm out of luck with the unlocking and rooting since it requires me to RSD flash to a different rom prior to updateing to 2.34 when they are saying it causes bricks. guess i'll wait for the official att and see if we can do the same update setup over the beta..love it though..just hate the fact my signal keeps going white then blue...any way thanks

[Q] installing a custom rom

What will happen if I try ti install a custom rom without unlocking my bootloader?
You might not have an access to your device.
Its wrong to do that, it will make you troubles.
Just read here and start doing things right: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600
Thanks for the link and that sucks things were so much easier when I was in froyo I could easily install about any rom I wanted.
So let me ask can I flash back to the last froyo firmware I had and still have on computer with RSD LITE this 2.3.4 gingerbread update was installed OTA.

froyo/gingerbread, it didnt matter. there were no real roms until we got unlocked bootloader. i have no idea what you are talking about roms being easier to flash when you had froyo.....
unlock bootloader
flash rom
get bored
flash new rom
get bored
flash new rom
its REALLY easy to flash a rom.....what is your hesitation?
Before I updated to gingerbread I didn't have to have on a unlocked bootloader to install any p-roms or roms like a had gladiAtrix but now I keep hearing I have to be unlocked to install a rom but I don't want to unlock my ATRIX yet I might need my warranty

P roms weren't real roms they were just a compilation of system edits to get around the locked bootloader. If you try to downgrade to froyo you'll brick your device. Your only option now is to unlock the bootloader. If you need you're warranty in the future you can flash a stock gingerbread sbf to goop back to stock with no visible sign of an unlocked bootloader

{locked} Stock Roms Bootstrap Flashable

I will try to compile bootstrap flashable stock roms for all builds here. Should be used for returning to stock after flashing any other locked rom or if you made system changes with the rom tool box or any other similar app and are not sure how to return.
Standard If You Brick Your Phone I Am Not Responsible.
Instructions
- BACK UP YOUR DATA. THIS WILL WIPE THE DATA PARTITION!!!!!!!
- Place zip in internal storage
- Flash via Bootstrap
This does not contain any bootloaders, kernels or cdrom images just the system partition.
After Flashing if you want to remove root use the Photon-Torpedo Direct Method's root cleaner function.
Photon
2.3.5. Photon 4.5.1A-1_SUN-254_13
Electrify
2.3.5. Electrify 4.5.1A_SUN_USC_19.0

If you mean flashing this over 198_7 youll have to flash the modules from the 198_7 or you will have communication problems.

Before I had really got into flashing ROMs, I had her device and updated it to the first Moto Soak test. I had also made some minor tweaks/customizations that I wasn't able to reverse either lol. Now that this is available, I can FINALLY bring her completely back to stock 2.3.5!

If your on locked 198_7 your running the 2.3.4. kernel. the 2.3.4. bootloader locked will refuse any other kernel than the 2.3.4. unless your unlocked.

If your running 2.3.4. 198_7 or lower and flash this you may have connection problems.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is your MOF2.3.5ish build based on the 2.3.5. 4.5.1A-1_SUN-254_13 build? Does that mean I CAN flash this to get back to stock and not expect connection problems? I'm a rookie.

MOF 2.3.5.ish is based on 2.3.5. 4.5.1A-1_SUN-254_12 but the modules have been replaced to work with a 2.3.4. kernel. So if you have a 2.3.4. kernel and flash this you will have connesction issues. I will be posting a stock 198_7 or 198_6 stock rom soon.
Ok, well I'm locked and came from 2.3.4 to MOF2.3.5ish, so I assume I still have the 2.3.4 kernel.

[Q] I've an unlocked MoPho 2.3.5(build 254_12) Can I install roms and custom kernels?

I got a used Motorola Photon that has Android 2.3.5 (build 254_12) and it has an unlocked bootloader. After going through numerous posts in XDA I came to know that 2.3.5 doesn't support bootloader unlocking. I asked the guy I bought it from and he said that initially it had MoPho 2.3.4 - he unlocked it, upgraded it to CM10 JB rom and then downgraded it back to 2.3.5 (as JB was unstable). I confirmed my MoPho has an unlocked bootloader from here ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650520 ). It's also rooted.
So I just wanted to know, are there any risks in installing a custom kernel/rom since my MoPho's OS ver is 2.3.5 ? Are there any internal conflicts that might occur since my OS version/build is different - one that doesn't allow unlocking of bootloader and root access?
No there aren't any major risks. Just make sure the kernel corresponds to the system you are using. For instance, if your using cm7 and want to overclock, make sure to use a kernel built for it.
Most ROMs are flashed with the kernel it needs to boot. Version 2.3.5 could be thought of as just another ROM. To flash something different, make a backup with your recovery then wipe and install the ROM of your choice.
Just be sure to us common sense and not to accept any ota update because it could lock your bootloader and brick your phone. Be sure to look at the stickies for a ton more information

I've the 254_12 build. And (I think, I'm not sure) the OTA update is probably the only way to update your system to 254_12.
What I'm not able to understand is how he could have downgraded from a CM10 JB rom to 2.3.5(254_12) without locking the bootloader. Is there anyway to do so?
All the root/unlock guides in XDA and other forums warn us, before proceeding to unlock, to ensure that our MoPho has 2.3.5 (198_7)or below to unlock/root. Shouldn't I be worried about it?
Here's a screenshot of my system specs.
No. You're unlocked. That's just your system build information. It will change when you flash a different ROM.
The ota update is the only way to update your stock and locked phone without any sort of modification. Since you're unlocked and rooted you shouldn't have an issue flashing a custom recovery and ROM

My friend, as I mentioned, the previous user had downgraded or "upgraded" the stock firmware in a SAFE manner that does NOT lock the bootloader. It's done the same way custom ROMs work. It just another ROM basically. Pretty simple. Don't take everything so literal in terms of 2.3.5 only OTA updated or factory restored phones are locked. Which you don't have
