Hi guys! I've been troubled by data dropping while browsing on my sgs2. Some consider flashing a different modem or the build.prop hack. A solution I've found is to switch to WCDMA only, the problem is when I do this I don't get any signal inside my home so I have to switch back to AUTO mode everytime I go home or to a place where the 3g signal is weak. So, do you guys know of a way to disable GPRS without going to WCDMA only. Or a program that could easily switch to Auto and WCDMA only. Thank you.
Not sure if i got your query correctly, but if you want to disable the data mode, then long press the lock key, you will get an option to disable data network mode.
I just want to disable GPRS without going to WCDMA only mode and without turning data off. I think GPRS in AUTO causes the data drop.
Inside the house I don't get 3g signal so I have to be in either AUTO mode or GSM only. When I am out the problem in AUTO mode is I get data drop when using 3g and HSDPA so I have to switch to WCDMA only. So, when I go to a place where there is no 3g and HSDPA I have to switch back to AUTO or GSM only which is troublesome. Can't I just disable GPRS without losing the GSM signal?
Maybe this could be of some help? https://market.android.com/details?id=com.codecarpet.apndroid.pro

No, to disable 3G you have to select 'Gsm Only' but not Auto mode.
Regards.

Can I disable GPRS in Auto mode? Just the GPRS part... not the 3g, not the GSM and not the HSDPA.
I just want to disable the G on my status bar in Auto mode. Not the 3g, Not the H and not the GSM.
Is my English this bad?

I think you can do that. Just Un-check 'Use packet data' and keep the Network mode to Auto. Lets see what happens.
Nah, your English is OK

Since I've updated to JI6 from JFD there isn't an option to use 2G network anymore :[
Is there any way? Because some spots in my school have spotty 3G so I have to force 2G, but my phone wont unless I tick the option "Use 2G network" but they removed it in JI6

its still there, just named differently. when you go to setting/wireless connections/mobile networks/network mode you will see GSM/WCDMA (auto) , GSM only , WCDMA only . GSM ONLY will toggle edge/2g only and WCDMA will toggle 3G only. i have no clue why it was renamed in Ji6 tho
I don't get good 3G at my house and when I'm on edge in get almost full bars. How can I shut off 3G/4g? I did the 4636 thing and selected gsm only but I still see h+. What am I doing wrong ? Is there another way? App?
When change it I just back out by the back button...is there a diffremt way I should do it to save the gsm settings only?
Thanks

Ok .. sigh... first off... the "bars" you are referring to indicates cell strength(voice calls/SMS) not data speed or strength. I think the atrix shows h+ no matter what as on my nexus it would change to H when using hsdpa and 3g for when on 3g and likewise for edge and even g **edit that's a cyanogen mod**. NOW as for switching to 2g only and disabling 3g it is ( settings> wireless & networks> mobile networks> select network = your choice) no need for *#*#4636#*#*
On another note if your getting slowdown on 3g try a restart... 2g is not going to be any faster.

Besides going through the different setting menus, there are widgets available in the market that will act as a shortcut to the last (or semi-last) preference. I have it configured in Extended Controls

i know what the bars mean. what i am saying is, i get a way better signal at home/work with EDGE. i want to be able to shut off 3g, like i use to be able to on my iphone to save battery, and i jsut dont need the connection at home and work.
i went to the settings, and mobile networks is greyed out? how can i get into that menu?

will it shut off 3g? and just keep EDGE? i have done it manually, but it does not seem to work?
no matter how many times i go into the 4636 screen and select GSM ONLY it goes right back to GSM/WCDMA
and i am so sick of looking service when it switches over from EDGE to 3g for ONE bar. what am i doing wrong? why cant i get it to STAY on EDGE>..this no service thing is making me wonder if i want to return this phone..

I forgot that I had to unlock my phone for it to work (canada, go figure) maybe thats why mine isn't greyed out.

After selecting 2g only mode, my Atrix still gets 4g speeds...
I am running the same phone under AT&T with 4.5.141. I rooted the phone and enabled the greyed out preference pane to select 2g only. Regardless of if I select 2g only there, and if I use the *#*#4636#*#* code, I can run speedtest and get 4g speeds .... Do I just need to go the cyanogen mod? Are there other preference panes that I need to edit? I am jealous of all of you out there who have successfully whipped their Atrix 4g!

hi all,
i plan to buy a mozart but i am wondering if i can put it permanently into 3g signal. we have 3g here in our location, i have an android and i put it permanently to 3g, when i tried mozart, it does not have feature, it just has dual band, so it switches to 2g everytime which i found frustrating. this is my only gripe with it. is there anyway to set it to 3g?
thanks!
Yes it does have 'Permanent' 3G, just like the iPhone, it has a option which you can turn on in the settings, i also hated that Android did not have a 3G switch either!
it says in the settings "when available" do if there is no or weak signal, it reverts to the 2g signal. i want it to be 3g everyday.

Simple. Just go into phone dialer, key in ##3282#
then goto/tap on ... at the bottom on the right hand side. Under 'settings' you'll find the menu to change it whether 'automatic', '2g only' or '3g only'.
Good luck.

That will turn off ALL data. Not what OP asked.
Search Internation GS2 or Captivate forums. There is some diagnostic code you can dial to enter into one of the many diagnostic menus. One of the them is band or signal selection. You can chose GSM (EDGE), WCDMA (3G) or Auto (default). In OP' case, he want to select GSM. Not sure if that setting will stick after reboot.
That seems like too much to do. Are there any widgets or apps I can download to make it faster and easier?
does anyone have any insight on this?
Does anybody know how to turn off HSDPA but leave 3G enabled in this device? I used to have a samsung galaxy mini with this option of selection band and saves battery sooooo far
go to
settings>wireless&networksettings>Mobile Networks
depending on your ROM you will get Use Only 2G networks and Use Only 3G networks

thanks but this isn't exactly what I'm looking for. Is an option that allows you to enable only UMTS and not HSDPA. You could use 3G but without the "H" icon, which means less speed, but more battery life because the device is not switching between UMTS and HSDPA constantly. I know that there's an option to switch only to GPRS, but that's not what I mean... thanks anyway!
Hmmm. When I enable '2g only' I can still use EDGE networks and so forth, it only seems to disable HSDPA - which is how I want it. What do you get when you disable 2g then?
Sent from my U20i using Tapatalk
He's talking about UTMS which is one step ahead of EDGE and one step short of HSDPA. I don't believe that there is any way to disable HSDPA only, however like the post above says, you can disable UTMS & HSDPA under settings>wireless and networks>mobile networks>Use 2g networks only.
