I had this same problem with my HD2 and never found a solution i thought this would've been resolved with the GS2 unless im doing something wrong here, basically when i click on my Gmail app and delete messages and later on that evening on my laptop not all the messages are deleted, with my HD2 none of them used to delete when i tried doing it on the phone yet when i delete them on my laptop they delete ok, with the GS2 i deleted 30+ emails earlier ive just checked my laptop and 12 of the same emails i "deleted" are still there, does anyone know what's going on here?
Also why do i always have to "click to view pictures" on the Gmail app?
Is anyone else having this problem with the Gmail app?
Damn im amazed im the only one having this problem usually there's at least a couple of people in the XDA community with a similar issue, it's a bit annoying having to delete emails again, and also having to click on "show pictures" in order to view the images is a bit annoying too.
I don't delete, but I do label every email, and then archive. I quite often find messages re-appear after archiving, showing as unread, even though no new messages have appeared inside the thread.
This occurred on my old Nokia 5800, it actually seems to happen less on my SGS2.
Thanks for your response, i would just like to be able to delete the emails after ive looked at them on my phone and not have to delete them again on my laptop, sometimes the emails do delete out of 30 emails i deleted 2 days ago 12 were still there when i checked a few hours later that evening, yet this morning i deleted about 15 emails on my GS2 yet when i checked on my laptop they were still there showing as unread, i don'tu nderstand this.
Surely i cant be the only one having this issue?
I delete emails a lot using the Gmail app and I've never noticed this problem - weird.

I had the same problem with my HD2 running Android, on the HD2 forums last year someone posted a fix for this before but it only worked for some people and unfortunately i wasn't one of them.
I'm thinking will i ditch the Gmail app altogether and just use m.google.com in X-Xcope browser i have tried deleteing emails via m.google.com before and they do delete, the Gmail app though is handy and something i use a lot.
check your account settings. Make sure delete from server is activated/checked.

You don't have that option in the gmail app.
Does anyone know if i can create a shortcut for my Gmail on the phone i have the m.gmail.com saved in my browser (X-Scope) but i cant see any function for copying a shortcut to my main screen on phone, ive just deleted some emails in the m.gmail.com in X-Scope and checked Gmail on my laptop and the emails are gone so there's absolutely no doubt there is something amiss here with the Gmail app so im looking to delete it but id prefer to have a shortcut of Gmail on my phones main screen.
cheers
Also on the m.gmail.com you don't have to click on "show pictures" every time cos the pictures just show automatically.

Long-hold the homepage to add a shortcut (not an application) and it should give you the option of "bookmark".

cheers id forgotten about this, funnily enough when i do this it doesn't show me the bookmarks from X-Scope but from the stock browser which i don't use, im wondering why i cant see the bookmarks from X-Scope?
Anyway it also gives you the option for a "Gmail Label" shortcut but im not sure if this particular Gmail shortcut comes from the Gmail app which is no good to me, or m.gmail.com which is the one i want?
This Android Gmail app seriously needs improving like the Facebook one which is also crap

For some reason, all people I email ends up in my contacts. Even if I emailed them just once and not even from the phone. This never happened on my Nexus One... Any ideas? Thanks.
Go to contacts, menu, display options, select only show contacts with phone numbers.

Ok but what if I have some contacts that are only email addresses. It seems the phone is getting contacts from within gmail's "all contacts" instead of "my contacts"
The only thing you can do is stop synching your gmail contacts.
This has happened on every android phone I've owned since the G1. Google remembers anyone you send an email to and it becomes part of your address book, even if it's not on your list of contacts. To show this, open up gmail in on a PC and type the first couple chars of that email address and it will pop right up.
I know what you're talking about but it didn't happen when I was running cyanogen or kangorama on my nexus one. Maybe it has something to do with Samsungs contact app instead of stock, I don't know...
nope same thing happened to me, i just deleted and move on though...
this is so annoying. Every android phone I have had syncs with 'My Contacts' (G1 and Nexus)...but the Vibrant syncs with 'All Contacts'...I haven't found a fix yet, or a good work around.

In the gmail web portal setting there is an option to turn that off. I remember seeing it just three other day.

I remember the days of the G1, when I had a separate "phone" list setup in google contacts, and I could display ONLY those contacts. Some numbers I do want to keep in google contacts, but only some I want to pop up when making a call.
Why did they change the contacts stuff so much? Does anyone else find this annoying?
any solution to this?
Beside this, can it show the actual group I put in the Google contact rather in the same group "Google"
Okay so I tried posting this in the general section and I didn't really get too much help. I tried calling Motorola support and the guy was talking to me like I was stupid. What happens is I get two email notifications in the notification bar. One with the y! Symbol and one with the @symbol. Every time I get an email both of these notifications pop up and this used to not happen before. It seems like it should be a very simple fix. Yet I haven't had any luck fixing it. Anyone else with this problem
I'm GreyBlured!
I'm assuming you have some yahoo mail app? Hence the y!
You should be able to turn off notifications for either one of those. Just pick which app you want to be your main email client, open the one you don't want to use, hit the options menu button (the left-most soft button that has 4 squares on it), and disable notifications and you could probably tell it to never check for messages/sync.

Is there supposed to be a yahoo mail app? because i just see that blue email app. And under accounts and motoblur account, it shows the email with the @ icon, the username is blocked out and im only allowed to enter a password and when i do that, it says please enter a username. I can't delete that account
I dunno man. the only thing I can think of that would use a notification that looks like y! is some yahoo app. check all your apps in the app drawer and look for anything yahoo related.

I had this same problem and couldn't get around it. I created the problem (I think) by using Titanium Backup to restore the email/messages. It was after I re-flashed the retail sbf to get root on .57. I reflashed the sbf a second time and didn't restore from Ti (only restored apps plus data). It turned out Motoblur kept that info anyway once I logged in after reflashing. (the email account was there).

It was a few weeks back when I did this so I am a little hazy but it appears that Moto must populate the email fields on the phone from their server level. If I recall correctly my 3 accounts (one exchange, one pop3 and one gmail) were all there after I reflashed and just logged into Motoblur after the second reflash. The Ti email/messaging restore must do something to corrupt the pop3 accounts. Like you, I couldn't figure out a way to get rid of the account and just re-enter the data.

This bugs the hell out of me as well. I get two different notifications when I get one email from one source. One is the @ red stamp looking icon, and the other is the standard gray envelope. I'm on GingerBlur, and I've been looking for a way to get rid of one or the other notifications and can't find where to remove one of them.
There has to be a way to do this other than a re-flash.
Oh, wow didn't see this thread when I posted in another one. I suggest checking universal inbox or other all in one messaging apps to make sure there aren't multiple apps notifying you about email, since just on the phone are 3 email apps, one for Gmail, one for yahoo, and one for all of them.
Also if you do decide to sbf, get titanium backup and do a batch backup of your apps, and then redownload titanium backup and restore the backup after you sbf. It made things much easier when I sbfed.

Exactly as the subject states. I get notifications for both, And honestly, the Gmail app sucks anyways, as it doesn't sync with my email for quote awhile.
You can disable your Gmail account from syncing on gmail, but you can't delete it as far as I know. You can also uninstall the app from root explorer, but I don't know the precautions of that since the market depends on a gmail account. It would be safe to backup.

I agree. The push notification works better than the stock app. I only use gmail, so its not an issue. That's not to say I don't have a hotmail, live, and yahoo email address, just that I only USE gmail.
The gmail app let's you label, archive and choose which folders sync how long. The stock email client doesn't do any of that.

All I can say is the Gmail App is great, however, I have not used the stock samsung email client as the last time I used it, sucked big time, some email clients *old eudora especially when I first got my Samsung Captivate last year* were getting gibberish from sending e-mails. I use MailDroid Pro and Gmail.. Since upgrading to the i777, I am still using maildroid pro and gmail app. I even get gmail messages in maildroid because of the ease of deleting messages I don't want to see!
HTH,
Charlie
personally, i like having separate notifications via separate apps for my exchange email and gmail... it works better for me that way.
Because the gmail app blows away the stock email app when used with gmail... Since I only use gmail, the other email app is one of the first things I nuke.

Really?
Man, I use GMail too, but the app for it sucks for me. It doesn't update everything nearly as quickly as the stock email client.
1. If I delete emails from my inbox (from a computer or something) it takes hours before it shows up in the GMail app, and vice versa as well.
2. It doesn't refresh the emails on launch, it seems to be quite random (and in the range of a few hours late anyway)
I can see how the stars and folder would be nice, though I don't use them. But still, the intense delay in communication really bugs. Or is it just me?

Apparently, it's just you.
Mine updates fine. I use both. The Gmail for the phone stuff and the other for work exchange email.
My gmail app is great as well. it updates quickly. you may want to check your settings.
i agree with the two above me... for gmail, when i read/delete an email from my computer the notification/email is gone from my phone within 5 seconds.
Don't Feed the Trolls!
Both Gmail and Stock email sucks, IMO. :Q
Gmail client
1. The biggest problem is, it only supported gmail. Everyone has several email accounts, don't you ? Then, you would need at least two email clients to read all of them.
2. No pinch zoom. Sometimes, the emails (in HTML format) exceeds the width of display, so you move to the right side to see them.
3. Sync is sometime slow, as indicated by other posts. I have encounter slow sync several times.
4. When composing new emails, it will prompt you matched recipients after you typed few letter. But, I would have to have an option to pick from Contact app.
Stock email
Most of let downs are due to Exchange support
1. In my corporate Exchange, I setup rules so that incoming emails will be moved to various folders. The stock email can only sync Inbox folder. You have to select that folder(e.g. "My other folder"), the email app will then refresh. But, it does not sync, as such, no notifications.
2. No "delete all" in Trash folder
3. In list view (the screen show preview of emails), to delete an emails, you need to press the email and hold it for few seconds. Then you select "delete". This is non-intuitive design. Gmail uses checkbox, and iPhone uses swipe delete.
4. Then, I feel there is "lag" when deleting the emails. Sometime, right after deleting the emails, the email app paused for few seconds before the app became responsive again. It's because the app is trying to refresh with server. But, it should do so in the background process. iOS's email is definitely much more responsive in this regard.
5. Similar to gmail, there is no way to pick recipients from Contact. You have type few letters, then you can pick from matched list. Don't get me wrong, picking from matched list is good. But, sometimes I just cannot recall recipient names. So bringing-up Contact app to pick recipients will definitely help.
How do you disable the gmail account from syncing (in the stand alone gmail app)?

Choosing delete from a context menu is very intuitive; I think what you mean to say is that is it not efficient. To delete multiple emails in a list view, just press MENU, choose DELETE, and then check off as many emails to delete as you'd like.

Well, it's probably me. At first, I did not know press-and-hold will bring up the context menu. That's why I think it's unintuitive.
But, you are right that I also meant that it's not efficient.
Overall, IMO, the Email/Contact/Calendar apps leave much to be desired , comparing to Blackberry's and iOS'.
Crap you guys were right, it was setup to update several hour's away by default, rather than emails 30-minute. But even after activity it wouldn't refresh in the background.
I am really glad I stirred up good conversation here, seeing everyone's points. Thank you all for your replies
Also, no troll here.
anyways, I decided to just get a paid email apparently that is pretty good, so we will see how that goes.
My understanding is that this is a known issue, I'm looking for a workaround or resolution.
Using KitKat, and the standard AOSP email client, I setup my corporate email account in the usual way. Everything works the way it is supposed to except for syncing contacts.
Normally I have fewer than 100 contacts, but with KitKat I end up with over 600. From my research into this issue it is because KitKat is syncing the "suggested contacts" from exchange, not just the contacts listed in my address book. I'm not sure who made the decision to do that, but it doesn't sound like the best idea to me.
I see this problem on my tablet which is running the CM 11.0 nightlies, but I do not see it on my HTC One running AndroidNow, even though Android Now is at 4.4. That is what tells me that the problem is in Exchange Services for the standard AOSP client. I confirmed this by finding this site:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...4-4-with-gmail-style-ui-and-a-slide-out-menu/
I downloaded the appropriate files and installed the apks on my HTC One. When I setup my corporate email there I started seeing the same issue.
Does anyone have any news or recommendations on this issue? By the way, I'm not looking for "install such-and-such email client, it's better" type recommendations. I've tried the majority of them already.
Thanks
It is interesting to me that no one has anything to say on this issue. Perhaps no one saw my post?
At any rate, I found a "solution" which is clumsy but seems to do the trick. The suggestion I found in the google forums was to delete the "Suggested Contacts" folder (I did it in the Exchange web mail app), delete the Corporate account and recreate. I did and I now have the correct number of contacts.
From what I have found this problem is caused by code added to KitKat for syncing sub-folders. It is an issue that Google is aware of, but has marked at a very low priority. I assume that means that a real fix for this will be a long time coming.

In case you may not have noticed, there is a open issue for this now:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=61979
Im having the same problem with you, but removing the "suggested contacts" folder from Outlook didn't work (not that I should have to do that). It was if the contacts were cached to the phone.... even after removing the account. I even tried disabling sync, putting it in airplane mode, and using "Contact Remover" from the Play Store to delete the contacts from my phone (disabling sync and airplane mode to prevent a total deletion of all contacts on next sync). After that, I removed the account from Android, removed all phone pairings from Exchange (through OWA), and cleared the cache of the phone. As soon as I resynced, they all came back.
I'm beyond pissed. I literally have 5,000 contacts, and I can barely open the People applet. This is ridiculous.

I have this same problem, but it seems to be Exchange email address history (start a new email: start typing address and the autocomplete list appears)that is causing the problem for me. If I delete the history the contact is now longer shown in my contact list. The problem is this history list is ever growing and changing. It seems we are forced to live with excess users until Google gets this fixed.

Ahhh, well that would make sense why deleting the "suggested contacts" folder doesn't fix it. I don't want to flush my autocomplete history. It's quite useful.
In the interim, I'm just 'pushing' my contacts from Touchdown using the "Copy to Phone" option, and not adding the corporate email option for now.
Here is a pretty nice work around to this issue.
Go into outlook and create a new category for all of the contacts you want to sync with your device. Once the contacts are part of the new category, go to your device and in the contacts>>accounts to display>>select the corporate account>> and select which list(select the category you created in outlook>> thats it and resync your contacts.

Agreed, a true fix is still needed. The biggest problem with this solution is making sure you put new contacts into the new category when they are being added.
I have the issue that my phone will not sync to the exchange contacts PERIOD.
It downloaded them fine apparently, but any changes made on the device do not get updated on the server.
WTF? How ****ing stupid is google to break activesync!?
I'm not just having problems with contacts... my entire calendar will not sync. I basically get no meeting reminders. I can log into exchange webmail and check my calendar there, but that is ridiculous.
As for the contacts, none of the tips and tricks in this thread have helped. I have completely deleted "suggested contacts" (which is a shame, because it was actually useful), but my phone is still pulling them from somewhere....
The only thing that works for me is installing Touchdown and using it to sync, then push the contacts to the phone. It does pick up the bullshvt ones...

I can't understand why it cannot be fixed. I don't even fully understand the problem, as I've gone through Outlook/Exchange multiple times cleaning out the "suggested contacts" and still had my phone's contact list spammed with every email address that is and ever was.
It took a long, long time... but I used "Contact Remover" from the Play store and just went down the list checking contacts I wanted to delete. It's much faster than going into each contact, hitting menu, then hitting delete. Still, you have to be careful not to delete contacts you want to keep. Many times, they're named exactly the same as the spam ones.
On a side note, I am struggling to understand why there are so many contacts that have been "augmented" by apps such as Facebook and Lync 2013. I never choose to sync those, but it appears to have done so anyway.
same problem here, contacts on phone (nexus 5) are filled with rubbish now
I have a weird problem, I did a search and finally decided to open a thread here because nothing could help me out of this trouble. My father owns a Galaxy Core mobile and he is really new to android OS. He was trying to save a contact which he received through message from some one else and while saving that contact he played with some options (I guess Gmail Sync) and now many of old contacts have gone missing. I checked the "Contact to display" is set to all and still those contacts are missing. I rooted the phone and tried to recover the contacts through few recovery applications but no help there too. Today I came across to Gmail sync last date & time and that's exactly the same date & time when my father was trying to save that contact. Right now I am getting an error at the bottom of that screen "Sync is currently experiencing problems, it will be back shortly." Can someone please help me because my father has lost more than 100 contacts and really needs them back. Thanks in advance

Can someone please help me because my father has lost more than 100 contacts and really needs them back. Thanks in advance

You could check to see if they're still in the Google account by google.com/contacts. If so, you can export them as a vcf file and import into the contacts app. This might double up some, but easier to remove duplicates than to track down every missing contact.

Yeah, I checked that too but only gmail contacts are there and they are same in mobile (when I choose "Contacts to Display" as Gmail account only instead of all ). They all are email contacts and doesnt have mobile numbers in them.
Please help.
