[Q] system/app question - Optimus One, P500, V General

Ive switched quite frequently from Mik_os's CM7 to Megatron V1 to Devoid Froyo Final on numerous occasions and each rom brings a different set of options to it, which makes for incredible performance and satisfactory battery performance, but I was very curious to know, can you adb pull the system app's folder from Mik_os's CM7, reflash Megatron or DFF and replace a view system apps from CM7 to Megatron ?
CM7 has things like Theme Chooser,DSP Manager and so forth, things I really enjoy where as Megatron doesnt
Ive already pulled the system app folder from cm7 and along with the apk's and odex files and they sit comfortably on my computer desktop, I had unzipped Megatron's file and look at the differences in both system app's files, my plan was to rezip the system app's with a few system apps from CM7, than reflash Megatron ? Can this be done ?

Imo theme chooser won't work with non cm7 rom and dsp manager won't work in froyo.

[MOD] AOSP/CM 5.0.8 Mms.apk with puzzle lock support

First off, all credit on figuring out this mod goes to untermensch, thanks a ton!
Please see his post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8542257&postcount=6114
So, this is the Mms.apk from Cyanogen Mod 5.0.8 (taken from the nexus 1 build) and modified to support the samsung puzzle-lock messaging notifications!
UPDATE 10/12/2010: added a smaller, faster version, with all images optimized, cut the file-size almost in half. New version is "Optimized_CM_5_0_8_with_puzzle_Mms.apk" though I'm leaving the original file attached to the post for anyone that wants to test both files.
For anyone that's never used an AOSP/CM android rom, you can see screenshots of the app here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/113127051130934911253/AndroidCM508MMS?feat=directlink
If you already use an AOSP/CM mms.apk, this can be pushed right on top of your existing apk.
To install if you still use the touchwiz mms apk, either use adb/terminal/root explorer to delete your existing mms.apk from /system/app then reboot, and uninstall "com.android.mms" then reboot into recovery, and clear cache and dalvik-cache.
Reboot one last time, rename this apk Mms.apk, and adb push to /system/app
Cheers everyone, and thanks again to untermensch for making this possible!
Awesome thanks for sharing your findings! Just pushed it to Bionix 1.7 and MMS seems to still work and have the puzzle piece. After getting so used to that puzzle piece I go nuts without it haha.
Thanks! Works great
Very cool thanks Man.
Updated the OP with a smaller, faster version with all images optimized, cuts the file-size almost in half.
Cheers everyone, =)
has this been tested with a stock 2.2 Mms.apk?
tyty! just pushed it to frankin-twiz. made it the perfect ROM.
I've never actually used Stock Android. Can I get some screenshots to see what it looks like? Don't want to change it if I don't end up liking it

Hi,
I posted a link in the OP to some screenshots. The biggest thing for me, is that instead of making delivery reports a notification that has to be cleared after every sms/mms, it shows an icon, in-line with the message text, that changes based on status (pending, delivered, error, etc.)
Also, this does not use the "chat bubbles" like the touchwiz mms app. Personally, I don't really care for them in the touchwiz mms, since it truncates long messages, forcing you to click each message to view the full text.
Anyway, hope this helps, cheers, =)
I followed you installation instructions but did not see the app named com.android.mms after deleting mms.apk and rebooting i didnt see it in titanium or the stock app manager...now i pushed the file but it wont show up after restarting 3 times? Did i do something wrong? And yes i wiped cache and dalvik cache twice

Hi,
I've never run into that before, everytime you remove/delete an apk from /system/app it should leave residual data. Granted, this is from a terminal/shell approach, I don't personally use titanium, root explorer, etc. but do almost everything from an adb shell.
The only thing I can suggest is try deleting the mms.apk again manually, from a shell, and reboot and then go to /settings/applications/manage applications and hit menu, change filter to all, and then search for anything that looks like com.android.mms
Sorry about that, not sure why its not working for you, do you run a custom rom?
cheers, =)

Thank you!
This phone is looking more and more like android and less like an iphone everyday thanks!
coming from touchwiz make sure to remove Mms.odex as well
Confirmed working in Bionix Fusion 1.0.
s0niqu3:.
I know I posted this to Viral when he made the mods to the Mms.apk back in Bionix 1.7ish to get it black, but it never got fixed. The background color of MMS content (easily seen when adding audio) is still a light blue. Think you can change it to black to match?
Thanks for this. I tried following the instructions but it didn't cooperate. My mms.apk was still there after reboot. So I just replaced it with the new one using root explorer. Seems to work without a problem. Running Fusion 1.0

Works great for me. I had to use adb to push it though, root explorer wouldn't install it.
So nice to get rid of that cartoon like Samsung app!
Works great for me; Bionix 1.9 OC/UV/Voodoo.
I want the TW MMS icon though... the AOSP icon looks stupid.
Edit: Switched them with the pretty TW icons (used larger/higher res icons from each apk, picking the best ones). Works perfectly!

[Q] Youtube app for 2.1

Does anyone know if the new youtube app (froyo only) has been ported to any of the 2.1 ROMs? If so, or if someone would be willing to do it, It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

help?
How do i go about installing this? I uninstalled the original app using titaniun backup but now wuen i go to install this apk it says something about installing over an older version (even though i thought i uninstalled it) and then it says uninstall failed. Do i have to use adb?
which rom are u running. You should be able to install it over the old youtube. It should ask u to upgrade. I use astro file manager. All I did is went to downloads clicked onto youtube apk and opened it and installed it.

I am running xtrSense 4.2.1
xtrom and xtrsense will not let u over ride some apps. They are built in to the rom. Try using kaosfroyo or tenzo's plainjane rom with cache2cache. If u decide to use kaosfroyo, go to the market and upgrade what he has installed. Kaosfroyo will let u view hd by default. There is a new youtube on the market only available for froyo

so theres no way (even with adb) to push that apk while using xtrSense? I have never been a fan of the Froyo rom as it seems to run really slow to me for some reason (even when OC-ed).
No, there is not. Checkout the threads, there are 2 sensefroyo roms out on beta. It's looking cool. kaosfroyo is pretty fast. check it out.

FYI: The posted version is 1.6, not the new 2.0 that's still Froyo only.
You can use root explorer in the market to replace your old YouTube apk with this one. Yes its a paid app but its worth it. I have xtrROM 4.5 loaded and so far no issues. Just make sure you rename the old apk first just in case you run into any problems.

Also forgot to mention this as its critical - by default root explorer will not mount your system/app folder. Tap mount r/w on the top right of your screen when youre in the folder before you rename and paste the new file. Then tap and hold, select permissions and reset these so they are identical to the old file. Then reboot your phone.
Sent from my Eris
Ok one more thing. When you rename the old file, just add .old to the end of the file.

ok thanks a bunch, ill try that later tonight. I love my xtrSense lol. Ive tried the new TenzoSense Remix rom and honestly its nice, but xtrSense just seems rock solid when it comes to fluidity and performance (taking into account that the remix rom is only a RC1 rom).
I may very well buy the root explorer and not just refund it, although how much of an advantage does it have over titanium backup?
Root explorer is just a file manager for root users. I've never used titanium backup since I keep a backup of my apps and there isn't much in settings that I can't redo in seconds. I just stick with nandroid backups

Just came across this in the xtrROM thread, a modified YouTube app from Froyo that works in Eclair - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817528
haven't tried it yet though

[Q] help on uninstalling a CM 6.1.3 V054 related zip???

hello,
yesterday i installed wolfbreak's CM 6.1.3 V054 and really liked the look of it, then i installed a certain zip (not sure which one it was from the wolfbreak CM 6.1.3 V054 thread, but it changed the dialer to the arc style and got rid of the colour icons in the setup menu etc) and dont like the look of it, is there a way i can uninstall the zip or do i have to flash the whole rom again and start from scratch? i installed all of the extras zips on the wolfbreak CM 6.1.3 V054 thread page, so if someone could tell me the name of the zip that changed the look and feel then that would be great!
i would also like to know if there is a way to either change the clear background to white on the blue version of the market, or just revert to the normal green version? the blue version was also installed with a zip file in xrecovery.
thanks in advance,
woopypants
Well first of all if you don't know which zip file and where it is located, unfortunately you have to factory reset, wipe cache partion, wipe dalvik cache and battery status. Then install the Rom then the update and other zip files all from scratch but this won't take long.
Secondly if you don't like the blue market just flash new market and not the new blut transparent one.
Hope this helped
thanks for your reply, i the location of the zip file (its just on the sd card) and am pretty sure i know which zip file i want to 'unzip' so basically i just need to know if its possible to get rid of a certain file (as in unzip it, if there even is such a thing).
thanks for the tip on the market too
actually i realise know which file it must have been- "arc icon and ui.zip". just for future reference i would like to know if there is a way of unzipping a file, or should i just do a backup everytime before i uninstall a zip, so that if i dont like it then i have something to revert back to instead of having to reinstall the rom everytime.
By default, the dialer for wolf's rom has always been the arc dialer...so if you want to get rid of it, the best thing to do would be to flash over a theme like matted blues.
well you can install themes to cover them if you don't like them
eg. X HC theme by SEMPITERNAL

[Q] Suggestion

Hey guys I've been using my trusty htc Hero for about 2 years now and lately I've been noticing it's no longer what it quite used to be..
That being that it doesn't run smoothly the latest apps and can't perform some simple tasks decently enough for that matter.
Also, a very important thing is that all the latest ROMs are heavily loaded with apps I just don't need. What I want is a very lightweight ROM with only the essential apps installed on it so that I would be able to customize it exactly the way I want.
I once tried to manually modify a ROM with a kitchen, but it's too much hassle and for some reason the ROM kept crashing and lagging.
Please suggest some lightweight ROM (2.1 or higher preferable) that only has the most essential stuff in it.
Thanks so much in advance!!
Open the zip of the Rom you want, delete apks you don't want in system - app then sign it (i use autosigner) voila you have a light Rom
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
you can do that ^
Or you install rootexplorer on your phone, browse to "/system/app/" and delete everything you don't need. Then reboot the phone, and wipe cache and dalvik. (not needed, just in case)
It's basically the same, just.. another method ^^

Yep, its what I do, I use ESFile Explorer and delete everything I do not need, including the launcher and the standard SMS app to replace them with my personal choices. I am running Elelinux Speedmachine 4 and applied the changes I mentioned now and it runs smooth as hell, no crashes, no problems whatsoever.
Because of the Cyanogen Mod I do not even need SetCPU anymore.
The autosigning for me somehow never really worked, thats why I went to this method.
I would however like a very basic rom where only the real necessary stuff is installed and you can custom install what you want on top of it then...

Stock google (AOSP) apps in stock SE ICS rom

Okay so I decided to stick to stock rom, because after last update I'm finding it very fast, and my battery seems to last longer then ever (I do have it supercharged and im using 128MB of swap), but I still like stock AOSP apps more than SE, so I took apps from JJ's hybrid (those should work w/o problems, as the rom is based on stock), I successfully 'installed' (copied to system/app) mms.apk, calendar.apk, deskclock.apk (for the latter I had to remove semcdeskclock.apk because of same signature), however, when I tried to 'install' phone app, the phone started misbehaving (it won't connect to mobile network, and settings stopped working randomly).
How do I get stock AOSP phone, contacts and that nice menu that you get, if you click on a contact shortcut on dekstop (in this case SE decided to stick to android 2.1 style, for some strange reason. It looks very out of place).
I am not interested in running a custom rom again, because I tried a couple, and at least one important thing didn't work as it should've, and if possible, I would like to do it manually (copy all the files where they should go with file manager), but I'll settle for recovery zips too.
Thanks!
If you read through the thread for JJ's rom, you'll see that he had to modify quite a few things (framework, etc.) to get those AOSP apps working and (reasonably) bug free. Unless you're trying to reinvent the wheel, you'd be better off using his rom if you want them, there's no magic way to get them to work. His rom is available as a recovery zip (intended for locked bootloaders, but of course doesn't need to be) if you prefer that.
Yeah, I thought so. I'll stick to stock, it feels less buggy. Thanks!
