Need a phone comparison/dogfight subthread - HTC EVO 3D

(As they do on Howard and a few others)....to keep if off 'general'.
This is a natural instinct (to compare a product)...but there are a ton of E3D owners here who are incapable of hearing of issues people are having, or comparing it to other phones without dumbing the thread down to schoolgirl name calling)...when those should be fair topic game on this forum. I mean this forum lacks civility more than any I've ever seen...by far! Yes there's trolling yes there are a ton of repeat threads, blah blah... It can still be handled without blatant rudeness.
Anyway, I know nothing will likely come of it...but I want to throw that idea out to mods: all comparative discussions with other phones/'dogfight' topics have its own section.

Im so sick of this vs that threads. It always turns into splitting hairs, trolling and personal attacks. Especially when it involves Apple. Its all about personal preference on what you want for a phone.
But yea most of the time I wont even open and read those horrible threads.

People can't even figure out what goes in the development section, you seriously think something like this would ever work.
I am more sick of reading these new threads that say absolutely nothing. If you want to make suggestions to mods, then PM them. Do you really need to start a new thread here?

@OP
You don't even have this phone anymore. You said you traded it in. So why are you still lurking around here like some crazy stalker? Most of your posts about the phone have been somewhat negative. So.....
Sent from my 3rd Dimension of Evolution

I'll engage you OP. I think this is a great topic if we can keep it civil and technical...maybe a couple observations.
The Evo3D was great in many ways:
Battery Life: Fantastic for a stock phone
Performance: Fantastic for a stock phone
Camera: Awesome in good light. Much improved audio quality while recording videos, also in stereo.
Fit and Finish: Top notch. Felt solid, had a good weight to it without being heavy.
Screen: Stunning resolution and as 'reference quality' color as I've ever seen a cell phone screen...and it's huge, which I love.
3D Feature: Actually I found the 3D effect very compelling (even though I thought I'd never use it before the phone came out). 3D video and pics are actually awesome.
Wifi Radio: much stronger than my E4G. Full bars at home no matter where I went. My E4G never fared that good.
Sense 3.0: Very improved polished interface.
3G Radio: Weak Weak Weak, but consistently held a signal when it got one which, to be fair, was most of the time. Great 3G speeds when connected, even with no bars once locked on.
4G Radio: on par with my EVO4G
Custom Roms: nuff said...for now
That said, I did return it and got a Nexus S 4G:
Battery Life: Also excellent for a stock phone..on par with E3D
Performance: Also excellent for a stock phone..surprisingly on par for only a single core.
Camera: Absolutely amazing camera compared to E3D. No contest. Though video isn't 720p but WVGA at max. Advantage NS4G
Fit and Finish: The build quality is acceptable. It's extremely light, though feels cheap compared to E3D. Advantage E3D.
SAMOLED Screen: Fantastic contrast and vibrant color. Very bright and especially usable outdoors. Also has a huge viewing angle. The curve is barely noticable in use. Considering how different (and awesome) these screens are from eachother I'd call this one a draw....apples meet oranges.
3D Feature: Nonexistent Advantage E3D
Wifi Radio: Sucks. Far worse than even the lackluster performance of my E4G. Advantage E3D
Stock Android Experience: I personally prefer this over Sense--but that is a matter of personal preference. This is also a draw for that very reason.
3G Radio: Just as weak as E3D, on average...though most of the time appears to have a stronger signal than the E3D did for me. HOWEVER, this phone sucks at holding a signal. Lots more dropped/missed calls than the E3D and TONS of data stalls and slower 3G speeds all around. Advantage: E3D
4G Radio: also sucks abysmally.
Custom Roms: CM7 installed in minutes after arriving home. A decent dev community...netarchy kernels (65fps!), MIUI runs fantastic...Clear advantage NS4G...for now.
In summation, even for being a whole technological generation behind the NS4G is a very very worthy contender. It is smooth as hell bone-stock, I'd even go so far as to say smoother than the E3D...and one netarchy OC kernel later it blows away the E3D. But this is an unfair trait to compare for the time being. (Though 3549 quadrant is pretty awesome). The camera on the E3D can't compare, however the lack of 3D on the NS4G can't either. The E3D camera, while not as good, isn't so bad that I'd consider it a deal breaker for me..it still performs very well. It is a cellphone after all.
The NS4G is also made to be unlocked (if you wish)...so it just isn't fair to compare that trait. Judge that based on how important it is to you...it's very important to me.
However the completely crap signal acquiring and holding abilities of the NS4G (and lack of update which was due on 7/11 but has been cancelled) have ensured that it will be going back promptly. I can't even wait for the SGS2 to be announced, nor will I get a locked motorola with no certain future at any date. The E3Ds radios are nowhere near as bad, and I'm certain a radio update will fix it up just fine.
The 3D isn't a deal breaker for me either--but I do really miss it. Just sayin'.
In my eyes the E3D is a clear winner in this competition...given the lack of a compelling dual-core phone coming out any time soon and the fact that I cannot keep missing calls I will be back on bored after work tomorrow...which sucks cuz this NS4G has realllly grown on me, but, that radio is just too weak to bear.

Neat story. I used my EVO for a few days and this phone is definitely a big improvement. I guess it depends on what you consider an upgrade is. This update is as incremental as any... Anyone here use iPhones in the past? Do you recall the updates? Basically the same damn phone until the iP4. I guess technology just hasn't moved all that far in a year to appease everyone.

Why? His reception, speaker volume, 3G signal strength, and camera quality, are likely better now.
Who cares? You dont like it take it back. Why do people come here and report it everytime?

There's no denying the dual core 1.2Ghz processor is faster than the first Evo. That alone is enough of an upgrade IMO. And I think the camera quality is better on my Evo 3D than the Evo 4G. I'm taking pics side by side and like the richer colors on the newer Evo. Battery life has been better too...although, Sprint's signal has been sucking as of late on any phone so can't blame that on the Evo.

Sprint claims that their "technicians are looking into this" blah blah blah "towers" blah blah blah....I am suspicious that it's about lowering radiation standards in reaction to a well publicized 'best/worst of: radiation: thing that was published a few months ago that some people took rather seriously...in addition to some cancer studies regarding cellphone frequency radiation that were also rather compelling....
data-speed wise I was told that "our computers are having trouble with phone swaps" which would explain why getting your line re-provisioned has pretty good results...and the cdma/auto trick is likely leftovers of a botched profile provisioning.
The evo4G has bigger pix, the evo3d has sharp pix, better colors...the low-light performance seems crappy on both--we've heard both sides of the fence from, well, both sides of the fence.
but, damn, DAT RESOLUTION.
The 3d felt faster, and had a sharper screen. It also had more ROM space.. but not enough..
I have my Evo 4g hacked so that the partition sizes are customized - i.e. more space for /data, less space for /system and /cache - this was giving me 700mb usable space for /data.
The evo 3d, despite having 4gb ROM, only had 1gb available for /data (so not much of a difference.. )
I have never managed to take a decent 3d picture on it..
Battery life - was expecting it to be better then the evo.. but it's about the same, running similar apps (obviously w/ sense on top on the 3d)
RAM - obviously the additional ram helped in being able to run more apps without the apps closing in the background.. but the evo was good enough..
Kickstand.. I know it's a small point, but I really missed the kickstand. we have a wifi baby monitor, and use the evo all the time w/ the kickstand while on the couch/etc.. Missed the evo 3d not having the kickstand
Button layout - I love that the evo 3d has a shutter button - BUT it made it incompatible with my vehicle dock (the volume buttons or shutter button kept getting pressed while docked). In the ~3 weeks that I had the evo 3d, I had taken probably 300 pictures on it (we just had a newborn.. and the best camera is the one in your pockeet already..) - started w/ 3d pictures first few days.. switched to 2d pics later.. and found myself using the onscreen shuttter more often then the hardware butto.
HDMI - I already have the hdmi cable for the evo.. would have had to buy the adapter for the evo 3d..
Overall, I felt that the evo 3d was an ok upgrade, and was definatey faster (especially while browsing) - but.. personally i would rather skip this one..

Curious Idea About 3D Headaches

So, I don't have any background or research into this and this is just speculation based on some observations. I might be on a completely other planet with this...
But, I hear a lot of people make the remark about how 3D gives them headaches or hurts their eyes. I'm sure there's a lot to it, but I'm also thinking it has something to do with how our eyes work vs 3d cameras.

Our eyes criss-cross as we look at closer/further objects. If you don't believe me, try looking at your nose or have someone else look at their nose and watch their eyes. This is what we're used to, it gives us depth and the 2 varying angles of what we are looking at.
The Evo 3D, Optimus 3D, and virtually every other 3D camera I've seen has 2 fixed lenses pointing straight out. I understand why - it would be way too difficult to be able to know how much to angle the lenses based on what you're focusing on, it would be costly, and less durable. But because they're pointing straight forward and don't cross, it's really just recording a double image with little difference in the angle. Not to mention, this isn't a natural view.
I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the discomfort of people viewing 3D. I don't really have much of a problem with seeing anything in 3D, but I used to. When I first got my E3D, 3D pictures hurt my eyes, but video was fine. I later got glasses, found out my eyes are a hair pointing away from each other (to the point where it's not noticeable). Now, I have more depth from anything I watch in 3D and the photos don't hurt my eyes. But I do notice a double image effect if I look into the background on many things. I know this is because you can't exactly line up the whole image, but it led me to think about the differences.
Now this doesn't offer a solution and is probably a pointless post, but was an interesting idea that someone might enjoy discussing.
It'll strain your eyes some because they have to focus on the light from the screen instead of where it should be if looking past or in front of it. But, most of the headache is from your brain trying to figure out what the hell you're looking at. So basically people with weak minds get headaches more often.
If you can find 3D pics or videos with a slight border around them it helps out a ton with that. It also makes the 3D effect much more pronounced.
The issue with 3D is the content dictates what is in focus, not you. If you try to only focus on what is already in focus you should be ok. But it is when you try to focus on distant, out of focus objects, which you will never be able to actually bring into focus, that you cause strain
Dont forget the refresh issue too, you dont get your regular 60fps, you get (polarized left) (blank) (polarized right) (blank) and so on, and while you wont consciously "see" the blank screen your brain has to work harder to edit it, this increase strain by quite a bit.

Our screens aren't polarized. Neither are our eyes equipped to handle polarized content.
3D videos are the standard fps for each eye and there's a parallax barrier that decides which image goes to which eye. Take a look at any 3D video, you can clearly see that each eye's image is there, full frame rate
two things happening
One reason for the headaches/eye strain is due a mismatch between where we focus and where we point our eyes.
As stated above, when we look up close our eyes point in (converge) and we bring the near object into focus (accommodate).
This works really well in the real world and helps our brains decide where things are in space.
With artificial 3D, we continue to focus (accommodate) at the screen, but in order to appreciate the 3D, we need to vary our convergence. This mismatch gives some people (about 20% of the population) varying degrees of eyestrain/headaches.
Great thread! Lotta nice info here.
I get eye strains with pictures only but Im okey with the videos.

If you want to know the real low-down, find out AFTER you've bought the thing and used it for a couple of weeks. All this geek spec is just fodder for your fixation of Shiny Expensive Objects, and of course for the usual fanboi pillow fights. Lordy, you'd think people would wise up by now.

I'm looking at buying a HTC one x+

What are the pros and cons of this device. Thanks in advance!!!
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda app-developers app
This is my oppinion:
Pro's:
-Fast CPU
-Smooth System
-Games running excellent.
-Great audio quality.
-Brilliant Screen.
-Gorilla Glass
-64GB Storage
Con's:
-Camera.
-No slot for memory cards.
-Sometimes it gets more than hot.
-Loudspeaker quality.
Pros:
Fast CPU
Decent battery life (depending on usage, heavy LTE usage and you will only get about 8 hrs)
Solid build quality (best in the industry I think)
Great screen (you can see it even at the beach)
64 gb internal storage (who needs an external drive
LTE support
Easy to hold due to rubber like surface
Good GPS signal
Beats Audio works nicely
Cons:
HORRIBLE memory management
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
(I will go into detail about this. As with the oneX before this, this phone is completely neutered by HTC and their lack of ability to allow the phone to multitask. It simply does not do it. You can switch between 2 apps and sometimes 3 if they are small but to try to switch from say text messages and a game, forget it. Even 4 apps and this phone has to reload the instance of the 3rd or 4th. It makes using this phone a complete pain in the butt. I was using the hotels.com app and trying to compare prices with expedia in the web, switching back between text and the other two apps make the phone forget all 3 were running. It's and HTC "feature" that kills apps so the phone can supposedly run faster. Problem is, they have a wicked fast processor and they don't need to worry about this phone running fast. All it does is fast.
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Lack of support by HTC and ATT (I see this being a problem for this phone in the future. Especially with the HTC One being announced.
Ugly ATT logo on front (not a deal breaker)
No removable battery (again not a deal breaker for me, it makes the build quality better so thee is a tradeoff there)
Does not make pancakes but it can cook them, read HOT phone.
Pro/Con - Somewhere in-between
Camera (Pics either comes out really good, or really bad low light performance is ok. It seems like the photos are by the software see the low light performance or lack thereof below.

Overall it's a great phone with an awesome screen, good performance, a decent battery considering what sucking on it. Frankly due to the fact that it will probably NEVER see an official update with the announcement of the HTC One, I would hold off for the one or wait and find these when the price drops significantly.
Pros:
Big screen
Fast! Quad-core is no crap!
Camera's great (compared to my HTC desire)
Very fast shutter (and I mean 4 pic/second in 8MP)
Gorilla glass
Customisable if you have a custom ROM
Cons:
Battery life's bad, and can get so hot sometimes the temperature shames the crappy iPhones.
OTA! Big deal! HTC is the worst when it comes to updates.
Multitasking sucks
BLOATED
Asphalt 7 lags
I think that's all.... It's worth the price anyways.

First sorry for my bad english
I've just received my One X + this morning .And.......i had the big WAOUUUU effect! My latest smarphones was a Galaxy Note and a Galaxy S3 internationnal version with quadcore exynos. And i prefer the One x + so much!! Very smooth, the screen is awesome. The colours are true unlike on amoled hd :good: 64gb of storage for game.I tried Nova 3 , it runs perfect with all effects enabled, i tried Asphalt 7 and it's the same.I don't know why some peopple said that their One x + lag on gaming??I can't say anything about battery life because it's too soon!
Pro
Performance good...Better than s3
Screen perfect
Battery can last a day
Call quality good
Beats audio is superb
Cons
Support and update is not as good as galaxy and iPhone and nexus
Galaxy is 4.1.2
One x+ still 4.1.1 and still no sign for 4.1.2
Sometimes hot when you play too long
Htc sync manager sucks...the good things is can import iTunes music...
The bad outlook 2013 still not supported
The battery is not removable if after use extended time is hard to change by yourself..
Not popular in my country...is hard to buy from shop for accessories..galaxy s3 a lot...(this is depends where you live)..have to buy on net
Overall I like it..
If I can give score...89 /100

That's funny, I like the Camera. I feel the internal memory is more that enough(64gigs). Speaker works great for music, but on speaker phone is a little lacking. I haven't felt it get to hot. I don't really hardcore game on it though.
The two (relatively small) cons in my book:
1: No SD card. Even with 64 gig, it would be nice if it had a SDxC slot just for backups without having to wait until everything gets stored onto Dropbox.
2: The size... it is pretty large for a phone, almost a phablet. However, with four cores that do a lot of processing, it is understandable that a larger form factor is a must to dissipate heat.
Neither is a show-stopper.

Kit or Loli

What is better on the Alpha, kit Kat or Lolipop?
Sent from my ONE E1005 using Tapatalk
Lolipop
Speed and experience better on loli? I don't care for animation and eye candy just want a fluid experience.
Sent from my ONE E1005 using Tapatalk
Yes, speed and experience better on Loli but S-find a little bit slower and battery consume more.
I prefer Loli than Kitkat
Thanks, didnt know if I should update to loli since mine is on KK....will give it a try
If you do update to LP you can always Odin back to KK. As much as I do agree that the experience is better on LP, speed and the toned down colors is better on KK.
Thanks, I need to read up on Odin
Sent from my SM-G850M using Tapatalk
In G850A KK is far faster and better in performance and battery consumption
Seems like the alpha does not get alot of attention in dev nor really many posts in this forum.
I recently bought few phones and don't know which one to keep to replace my old 2013 moto x. I got galaxy alpha, oneplus x, and Z5 compact. To be honest none feel as good ergonomically as the moto x. The oneplus is nice, good screen and speed but a Lil big. The z5c is really nice but darn thing si hard to hold without a case. Just way too slippery. And loli on it not very fast in my opinion. Also gets pretty warm with light surfing. Not terribly hot but the hottest of the bunch. The alpha is good all around. Nice size, weight is awesome... So light! Speed seems good. My first time using Samsung, it's not as terrible as I thought would be. I switched to Nova prime and feels good. No SD card is a bummer but not deal breaker. It's also slippery but best grip of bunch without case. Screen is good but a bit yellow and not as sharp next to oneplus.
What do you all think, which would you keep?
Thanks.

In this thread people tend to answer.... Alpha!
One must bear in mind that there isn't a perfect phone... for someone the screen is small and for others it's the best size, just to take one simple example.
One doesn't need to get approval from others, the phone must fit to one needs, it's simple as that. But, in addition, the Galaxy Alpha is a great all around machine: fast, light and slim, very good screen and camera, good looking design. The battery is enough: it runs in one day with intense use (wifi and some gaming, some calls and sms's) - for me, a phone battery should handle one or two entire days, but not one day and half as I prefer to charge it at home and not to carry the charger with me at work.
The Alpha has high rankings in almost all categories although it's not the fastest or the slimmest or with the best camera. It's a great deal because it is still possible to find at +- 300€. If you put together the specs and this price... it's a bargain!
P.S: you can change screen mode to photography, it is more color accurate (and less yellowish).
Great feedback, thanks. I've narrowed it down to alpha or oneplus x. The screen is much better on x but the alpha just feels good in hand and easy to use. They are both same price here in the states.
I ran benchmark tests and this are results. Am I reading correctly that alpha scores higher?
Battery on alpha could be better and I can't find the larger oem battery anywhere. Do they still sell in your country?

Exynos chipset(alpha) would score higher than Snapdragon(oneplus x).
Alpha exynos variants usually score around 50K in antutu,
but alpha snapdragon variant scores around 40K according to posts in this forum.
