Has anyone attempted to change or remove the sound(s) that the X2 plays on startup? I usually get 1 to 3 "DROID!" sounds when I boot my phone.
(I have turned off GMail notifications, which was the source of another "startup" sound)
Thanks!
if rooted, go into system/media/audio/notifications. change the droid.ogg to droid.ogg.bak. or use any extension. or delete. but that will get rid of the obnoxious "DROIDDDDD" on start up.
as for the two notification sounds when the screen completes bootup, i haven't found a way to disable those sounds. i tried changing the name of the notification but it played a different notification sound.
it have to do with the sd card mounting I would but there's a setting for that notifcation it's just a matter of finding it.

That's 2 them, the 3rd is a bit more tricky. To rid yourself of the boot animation sound you first need to be rooted. Copy the /system/media/bootanimation.zip to your computer, unzip it, open the desc.txt file, comment out the sound line (it's s or something, it should be obvious) save your changes and zip the files using storage only mode (no compression). Replace the edited bootanimation.zip on your phone. Reboot.
No more sounds.

Thanks to all of you for your helpful answers!
Ideally it would be nice to know how to turn off the first noise via a setting or (or editing a conf file) instead of just renaming the file. And it might be nice to have *some* noise for the SD card operations (just not the obnoxious DROIDDD one). So if anyone comes across any more info, feel free to post it.
But again, I really appreciate the time you all took to help out with your posts, and they certainly get the job done, and make booting (as well us USB plug/unplug) a lot less annoying!
BTW, it looks like juhde has also pointed out how we can make custom startup animations by changing the desc.txt and/or png files in bootanimation.zip
Thanks!

The method I described tells you exactly how to get rid if the boot up sound.
If you want a sdcard notification other than droid.ogg, then goto settings> sound> notification ringtone> pick anything other than DROID. Of course
You'll have to check sdcard notifications if you want to hear them.

Actually, the correct way is to edit victimization.zip in /system/media. Look around the forums to learn how to edit it. You need to remove the line in desc.txt that says "s droid.ogg"

Okay, so you may know what this is already - Linda sounds for your phone... read the whole post please.
For this version I rebuilt most sounds from scratch, and solved the mystery of the boot sound. All sounds properly maximized with a touch of reverb added, and I put some effort into figuring out some proper levels for the sounds, so it does not get irritating.
If the bootanimation for your phone has been changed, I cannot guarantee the proper working of the startup sound. Other than that it should work no matter what you have theme wise, as only sounds are being changed. Flash it after your theme is flashed and you will overwrite whatever sounds are there.
Startup - "Welcome to Android 2.2.1, the system is now loading"
Shutdown - The system is shutting down, goodbye"
Battery Low - " Battery level critical, please connect charger"
USB connection - "USB connected, battery charging"
Did not add the lock sounds because they annoy me, and the dialer does not call for individual sounds for each key. If I get time, a Lindaphone and Lindacam app may be created in the future, but I need to learn how to decompile and recompile those files properly to get it done.
Also custom notifications for messaging, weather, email, voicemail, calendar, XDA, and instant messaging. A ringtone is also included. As a bonus, I included my personal notification, which is a trimmed up version of the air guitar sound from Bill and Ted. Just makes me smile everytime I hear it... listed as Air Guitar in your notifications.
How do you install this? Put it on your sd card and flash it in recovery. Hate it? Flash the undo and the original Bi-Winning sounds will be restored. The ringtones and notifications will stay, I am not writing a script to delete files from anyones phone. I know enough to be dangerous, but to me that is playing with fire. The notifications and ringtone take up 340k in your system. If you absolutely NEED that space back, delete the individual files in system/media/audio/notifications and /ringtone with root explorer.
Not responsible if you break your phone, blah blah. You know this. I built this for Bi-Winning, but it should work for anything ZSJPJ or ZSJPK based. The boot sound absolutely will not work on anything that is not ZSJPJ or ZSJPK. Anything else is at your own risk, but the worst thing that will probably happen is the sounds will not work as expected.
Have Fun!
I love your sounds, but I'm running bionix. I can just extract the zip and then copy and paste the sounds in the appropriate audio folder with root explorer correct?
Not interested in the boot and shutdown, just tones.
Btw, thanks for making these!

Yeah, just copy and paste with your explorer and you are good. The tones though are largely the same. The major rebuild is on the ui sounds, the rebuilding of the notifications is on my to do list for an updated version

Sooooo basically I've never actually gotten all technical with the the theming on android. Nothing legit like you guys. But isn't it just a series of file replacements? Im an artist and have spent all my life drawing n such, and if someone would show me what to replace and how to safely do it I would give then whatever they need to release a flashable theme if anyone likes It. Im a very picky person. I like change on my phone baaddddd. If shown how; expect to see new themes like every other week if possible (depending on how difficult it is). Along with wallpapers that I usually spend hours trying to find.
Any takers?
Use search. I found some great links in this forum alone on theme creation.

I'm new to theming, but for my theme, UOT Kitchen helped me out! The only downside is that you can't do status bar, boot animation, or lock screen. There's a thread for UOT Kitchen some where around this forum. But your right, just file replacements. Look under the systemUI.apk and framework-res drawable-hdpi files with 7zip (or something similar). You can edit the images without unzipping the file!
I started with a UOT Kitchen file and added/changed stuff in the file. If you can't find an image or need help with changing something, try asking the ROM creator, the would probably know where the stuff is in the ROM.
If you fail, try and try again! I epically failed my first time and SBF a couple times because I was an idiot. Then I asked some questions and got started the right way. But make sure you do a back up before you flash a new file. I learned the hard way. A file can look fine to the phone at first, then it deletes everything it should, and then starts to copy files over like normal until a part of the file is bad. Then you have to SBF or restore.
Backing up is easy, just go into recovery and go to advanced, then back up, and choose to put the back up file under internal or external SD card. I do external, just my preference.

A lot of it is file replacement. However to change some of the colors such as text and the color of the volume indicator (those are the only ones that I can think of right now) will involve replacing the color hex values in XML files. In order to get the xml files in a readable/editable format you'll need to use apkmanager or apktool. Those are used to decompile the apk packages. You can then edit what you need to (including images) then re-compile the package. Search around in this themes forum for Navenedrobs post about android tools. He includes a download for apkmanager, apktool and some other necessary tools. I use apkmanager myself.
I also use 7zip for some small edits as mentioned in the last post but I prefer to decompile then edit. Apkmanager makes it easy to then optimize the images prior to recompile.
Oh another that required xml edits for colors is AOSP calendar. Not too many images in there but lots of colors are defined.
Here's a link to naven's android tools post.

Theming is time consuming... its not quite as easy as simple image replacement especially on stretchable images also known as 9 pngs ... also if u want to start creating your own images that too could get tricky as u will need to use a program like gimp or another photo editing program.. gimp is the best in my opinion... sometimes it is necessary to add layers when creating your own images.... Hedwig... do use draw 9 patch for your. 9 pngs.... if not how do u edit those... I use apk manager to decompile and recompile each apk.. just curious if u know of a better tool for editing the. 9 pngs .. neways the way I started theming is with 7 zip... I went in and changed the images regular pngs and then tested it out uot kitchen is a good start but u r limited as far as how much u can theme

If you decompile the apk the 9.png images gain the one pixel border where the patch is drawn. I'm just careful not to edit any of the black pixels around the edges. When you re-compile the border is lost (values of those are stored). So, no, I don't use draw 9 patch at all. If you're making new images that you plan to compile into the apk the you can just draw the patches in gimp, photoshop, or whatever you use. Just remember to add a one pixel border all around to the size of your new image.
So, XGrinder911. Any of this discussion helping out or are we all just blah, blah, blah?
Well I was considering Adobe Illustrator? Might that program work to create images? And so I get this apk manager, it decompiles and whatnot then I edit the files. Recompiles and voila theme? I get using apk manager on like the calendar cause its an actuall app but what about things like the status bar n notification pull down? they are in serious need of a make over.
And I tried using the kitchen. Didn't work out for me. Got my loving boot loops. Even when replacing the framework res apk.
Ooohhhh! Is It that? That's the apk?
PS- Hedwig your my new best friend.

The file is in framework-res.apk
framework-res.apk\res\drawable-hdpi\dark_header.9.png
Do what ashclepdia said and change the color in the bottom of that image to match the top. You'll see what I mean when you look at the image.
(Or light_header.9.png if you're working with a light framework.)

That image is streatched across the width of the screen. Creating the menu item that has the blue line at the bottom.
Think of it as that image repeating over and over again side by side.

I have a question too. How do you devs mod the build.prop? Is that mostly the difference between ROMs?
(Thought it would be better here instead if a new thread. Don't mean to thread jack)

No the differences between roms isn't mostly the build.prop
the build.prop can easily(usually) be modified using root explorer or similar.(I am having trouble editing the additions that kejar has made to build.prop tho. Never had this problem before. But its just the extra entries at bottom I can't change.
The biggest differences in roms come from the UI and system frameworks and scripts inside init.d
There are a few performance tweaks and edits u can make inside build.prop but ur.choices are kinda limited in what can be.done. even the line in eclipse build.prop that mentions raising the touch points recognized by the screen to 5 requires changes elsewhere in the "framework" to allow it to actually recognize that amount.
I had this on my T-Bolt and I missed it. I had to make it 720 to fit our phones. I added a few extra frames since it renders faster now. This is the CRT shutdown animation upon restart or reboot, aka shutdown. This replaces the white and green HTC shut down screen. The download link file is named correctly (hTC_downanimation) for stock locations to replace the current in system/customize/resource. Your location and file name may vary pending your Rom. Make sure permissions are marked correctly. Backup or rename your current file so you can restore. If you wish to use in your rom or reduce file size please give thanks for my initial work. The screen shots are example not sequence shots. Use root explorer to replace the file.

Haha, that was pretty cool. Had to rename mine because it was simply downanimation.zip in the first place. Nice job though
I'm unable to get this working, sadly. I set permissions correctly and the filename is exactly the same as the original but I can't seem to get the effect to work at all. Any other suggestions?
EDIT: Would it be because I used root browser instead of your suggested program?
File explorer program won't make a difference. Did you rename the original one or try to copy over it?

Thx for advice.
Yes you can also this has been covered many time in the past.
Make a folder on sdcard called Notifications. Insert appropriate audio files into folder. Select notification tone in normal way. I think Ringtones and Alarms works too, I'm not too sure. I find there is a delay when using custom tones in that fashion, so I just whack 'em in /system/media

I hated the lock, and unlock sounds, so i dug into it a bit. This is what i did. You have to be rooted. With Root Explorer i navigated to System/media/audio/ui. This is where all the ui sounds are located of course. U will see all the ui lock, and unlock sounds. I first tried renaming crystal lock unlock sounds(the one I use) with an x at the end of the name, basically getting rid of it as far as the ui is concerned. This did not work cause if it doesnt find the sound its looking for, there is a default sound it falls back on in the apk. So u will see a sound in this folder named silent ring. I copied this sound within the same folder. Root explorer names this copy, with copy at the end. Then i took the original sound file for the unlock style i use, and did a rename with x at the end, that way i still have the original safe. Then i renamed silent_ring-copy, to crystal_unlock and crystal_lock. Now i have no goofy sounds when i lock, and unlock my G2. Works great...
