how to install sony pc companion on ubuntu 11.04
You can't, although if you want to try you can always use virtualization (like Wine) and see if it works, but I doubt it will.
u can use VmWare and see if it works
You'll have to install virtualbox then create a windows virtual machine then you can install SEUS or the flashtool if you want. Check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1120580
why dont sony create a version for ubuntu i want to move from windows 7 to ubuntu and this is the keep back i dont want to have to use Virtualbox after all how hard can it be for sony to create it for ubuntu

Do NOT USE the script is for old V3
It's not that simple, its the jar file that needs changing. The device id works different under Linux.
Install virtualbox and run a Windows vm. That's what I did.

well I'd like linux support for it too
A Linux method would make it a lot easier than using a VM. However for the time being, I don't see another option...

Thank you,
i m forget the idea, i do flash steps under VM and SDK steps under linux.
I am having problems flashing my X10 using XP and Virtualbox. I get to the stage where I need to unplug my phone and shut it down for 5 secs but then when I plug in the usb and press the back button it will not flash? I assume its because in Virtualbox under Devices the X10 is not unticked as a USB device??
Anyone any ideas?
I have many ideas. But the only way to flash with linux is to ask massively jar dev to compile it for linux.
At the moment, I 've also done a script for linux, it's a quite fun but we can't flash without the jar because actual jar file use MS usb drviers we can't use under linux.
Virtual box is not a so good idea. Surely it works, but there not enough time between the moment when you plug the phone into usb and the time you need to put it into boot process.
The only way is to flash under MS.
I have personally mount virtual raw disk of MS installation, taht way you can use as real machine or as virtual.
After that u can try my script, it's not perfect but it is pretty useful.

There some user data to fill in and it need to be root for some command. If you need help to use it (if you want to), fell free to ask.
I was getting prepped to get my unlock code and was finding out how to install Android sdk and adb on this site:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html
Went to System Requirements and for Windows it only lists XP And 7.
Would that be only if you're going to actually write something for Android? Atm the only windows computer I have up and running is my Vista laptop. I suppose I could try pulling out my old XP desktop system but I don't think it can even use my new monitors. I do have a nice Mac desktop running Snow Leopard but I prefer to do my hobby stuff on Windows as I'm much more comfortable with tinkering on that. I'm much more mystified by OS X than Windows.
I'm running 64-bit Vista and had no problem with ADB. The .zip I got was "android-sdk_r16-windows" and had a flawless unlock/ root process.
That said, I did have to do some more advanced settings within Windows. If you have any troubles let me know and I'll hunt down the ADB tutorial that I followed.
I've been using it on a 32 bit vista. Works fine

Hey guys,
I need some help. I downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 because I heard 12.04 is not as good and I need some help with the installation. I want to keep Windows 7 on my PC as well as boot Ubuntu.
So I just need to figure out how to set it up so it gives me a prompt as to which OS I want to boot...Virtualize simply. haha
Also I am not very familiar with Linux' file system so I also may need some assistance in installing the SDK, JDK, ect.
I thought you said you were a dev over in the Epic sub forums. If you were a dev, Linux and bootloader installs should be second nature.

You can use the wubi installer that should be on the ubuntu DVD ISO that you downloaded.

The Ubuntu installer should handle all that. Since you already have windows you just need to shrink the windows partition to make room for Ubuntu and install Ubuntu to the free space. Once installed Ubuntu uses the grub bootloader which will give you the option of which system to boot into everytime you start up the computer.
As far as commands and installing stuff goes you may as well start reading up on it. You'll need to know how to use the Terminal to develop in Linux. Its not complicated once you learn common commands, etc. Also, I recommend using Gnome classic or kde as your desktop environment if you want something that looks similar to Windows. I'm a KDE person myself.

I'm building on12.04 with zero problems...just my $0.02. And like the other's said just install Ubuntu takes care of all that stuff.
Oh and ALWAYS create a backup before you start installing new OS's!
I wanna dual boot though and I prefer Ubuntu 11.10 lol

When I get on a computer I'll write up how I got my laptop to dual boot Windows and Ubuntu. I've actually got it triple booting Mac OSX as well.

to setup a dual boot system, u only need a free partition to install linux. a very basic linux installation u have to create root partition and swap partition. u can find installation guide online, its not that hard to setup a dual boot between linux and windows.
Okay cool. Because id like to get into Rom development, etc so I need Ubuntu or Mac OS X. Not too sure which ones better though. I assume Ubuntu is because its Linux and that's Android runs on
