Confusion about 16-bit vs. 24-bit - Nook Color Android Development

Screenshots taken with n132 (and are completely unmodified PNGs straight from the CM7 screenshot function off the Power menu).

24-bit:
A few points of confusion...
- Do the two shots above look identical to you, and appear to both be in 24-bit colorspace? They do to me.
- Why is it that on the device itself, both appear to be in 16-bit color, with heavy banding, despite the difference in framebuffers? Is there something about the OMAP driver that is filtering/dithering or otherwise restricting the colorspace above and beyond the framebuffer itself?
Rodney

Actually got the screenshots to show up. Thanks, photobucket. Word to the wise: don't use picpaste for it. Ironically, they'll show up in preview, but not in the actual post.
Rodney

Very limited understanding of all this, but could you make an img of both and open it in QuickPic? I there there are only a few apps that can display it.

Well, that's kind of my point - the app that I was running when I took the screenshots paints _directly_ to the framebuffer...the only thing standing between it and the actual video RAM is the driver, which is why I'm awfully confused by the exactly-the-same-and-banded-like-16-bit-in-both-cases visuals on the Nook. (I could possibly explain away the both-look-24-bit screenshots by reasoning that they may somehow bypass the driver, but if the colorspace *itself* is 565, how can that be?)
Rodney

Rodney,
I tried the test on my n129 with 6/30 OC kernel and I see no real banding in 565 mode. Cant save screenshot, I get error from the power menu function that y + height must be <= bitmap.height()
How did you get the nook to go into 888 mode for the second screen shot?

The banding is subtle but observable, particularly in the blue bar. (The bars are somewhat "skinny" so it's not as obvious - crank up the brightness to max to help with identification.)
You can get 888 with either the stock (read: non-OC) kernel or with n132+ and the latest Nook Tweaks from the Market.

The test pictures are nice and all, but pictures with large areas of very subtle gradients (lots of background pictures, like clouds and such) become much more obvious, however it's not a big deal for me. I believe only a photophile would care, and I believe dalingrin said the performance increase by going to 16 bit was substantial.

My issue isn't with static content as much as it is video...large patches of obviously "off" and blocky color moving around on dark backgrounds is -very- distracting, and makes Netflix almost unwatchable (due to the higher compression levels).
People once thought 16-bit color on the PC was the greatest thing ever - but since only "photophiles" would notice, I invite you to switch your main computer back to 16-bit for a week and see if you notice any differences.
The performance increase for 3D apps was indeed significant. 2D apps...well, show me a 2D app that stresses the GPU and then I'll care. =) In 2D, color depth and quality matter for a lot.

Ahh yes I saw that 132+ includes Dal's OC kernal. BTW there is talk that the GPU drivers are messed up in the release, so maybe you are staying in the same frame buffer even though you change it via Tweaks app.
I looked at the bars both landscape and portrait at max bright and banding is minimal and that's in the 16bit mode. Nothing as terrible as when you start XDA app, ghaaa, now that banding. And it looks like it is really the way software implements it. QuickPic << JustPictures << Stock Galery. Quckpic has that true color mode so it looks like hardware is capable, it all depends on software implementation. Or Quickpic might have a really good dither algorithm that fools us
I also have Chainfire3d installed, so it might have something to do with it

Something weird is going on with the new GPU drivers. SurfaceFlinger is changing from RGB565 to RGB8888 as appropriate when you switch 32bit and 16 in Nook Color Tweaks but I only see 16 bit.
I'm going to revert back to our existing GPU drivers and see what happens.

Strange thing, Dal....I loaded the N132 this morning (SD card install). Market said that Nook Tweaks had an update so I went with that.
When going into Nook Tweaks for the 16/32 switch (to see if I could tell the difference) I got a message that the kernel was incompatible and I needed a newer version of CM7.
What did I do wrong?

You did nothing wrong. Thanks for letting me know you had trouble. I totally forgot about SD card installations for some reason. This should be fixed in v1.4.1 which has been uploaded to the Market.
If you still have trouble verify you have "uImage16" and "uImage32" in /system/bin/kernel
Let me know if you have more trouble in the Nook Color Tweaks thread in the Nook Apps section.

Nook Color Tweaks 1.4.1 not working even with latest nightly (132), at least not from SD card. I get a black screen only and FC after a while. Except of this, Nook is functioning right. Small problem, when thinking what a lot of work was done by Dalingrin - Thanks

Same here. Nook Tweaks isn't working for me on SD card even after the latest update to marketplace. Get the same blackscreen. Before it would at least load the options (albeit it would give the error that my kernel wasn't supported)

Okay....I just uploaded 1.4.2. SD card installations are missing some symlinks that I assumed would be there.

right on. my main system doesn't look any different either. Of course I don't watch ****tily encoded videos streaming on my NC or my home system Netflix looks like **** in 24bit.
I feel you though. I'm all about choice. My brother wanted higher quality color for his tattoo pictures (he is a tattoo "artist"). I don't care that much.
-JNY

The Netflix app has banding on its background, a gradient of gray to white, but with dithering enabled, it goes away.
If you have dithering enabled, it's going to reduce the banding effect.

I still don't know whats going on with the color. Its like this even on old nightlies with the default 32bit kernel.
There is a difference in the two kernels though, surfaceflinger uses RGB565 vs RGBA8888 and I need to enable dithering to fix the really ugly banding only with the 16bit kernel. The 32bit kernel with no dithering looks like 16bit with dithering.
I looked through the framebuffer drivers and can't find anything strange there.
...confused

So I have a question: has anyone checked to see if this banding issue appears when using the B&N stock is and video player? In other words, are they using any drivers that happen to work well for our display?

Galaxy Note Gradient Banding Issue Explained - Color Depth

It turns out the color gradient banding issue has to do with how each app is set up to display which color depth (16/24 bit).
It has nothing to do with resolution nor pixel density.
Banding(countouring) is a digital artifact common to images, displays or apps of 16bit(thousands of colors) or less.
A 24bit capable display(like our galaxy note) is capable of show 24bit (3x8bit of RGB or Millions of colors) images - if view in a 24 bit app.
If banding is seen, it is most likely that the app is not 24bit capable.
Viewing 16bit or lower resolution gradient images on a 24bit screen (like the galaxy note) will also show banding.
It is up to the app developers whether they want to make the app 16 or 24bit.
This is where I finally found the answer to my question
This is why the image below displays fine on some apps, but appears to have banding on other.

Is there another phone out with a 24 bit display? If so, it's easy to prove.
My earlier statements still hold true. The graphics will catch up to our devices.
Nice!
Dude you just save samsung a BILLION DOLLARS...LOL
My only questions:
1) Why are there some Note owners who claim to have ZERO banding issues in all of the same apps that banding / color depth issues are known to occur on most Notes?
2) Is there a way to mod the kernel / software to lock the display into 16-bit mode as a temporary solution?
3) Does ICS do anything to address this issue on devices with 24bit displays?
The fact that the banding is present in major Google apps like YouTube doesn't bode well...
palehorse, do you see banding in the image above? do you see issues when running a video off sd card at native resolution? if not, then i am not sure what an exchange will do, but it is worth a shot!
I think i can answer your first question. I think it's a matter of the person actually seeing it or noticing it. But from a previous post someone claimed their screen was fine but the screenshot showed the banding.

I see horrendous banding in literally every image or video that contains deep blacks, and in every app except Dolphin HD. And Dolphin, the deep blacks become gray.

You can't judge it by screenshots -- screenshots don't capture the screen banding. If you view those same screenshots on a PC, instead of on another Note that has the banding issue, you'll see that those screenshot images are actually perfectly fine (no banding).
On the Nook Color CM7 build, dalgrin coded an app called Nook Tweaks that included a soft switch for 16bit/32bit modes. Would something similar be possible with the Note? If so, we might be able to lock or Notes in 16bit mode, which might temporarily solve the problem until the apps catch up -- or until the Note's gfx drivers are fixed to properly switch the mode themselves.

1) I don't know, but I've went to 3 Best Buy stores and 3 AT&T stores and tested around 20 GNotes - and they are all the same. (It's definitely not an hardware issue).
2) Maybe, I'd defer that to android developers.
3) I've heard rumors that ICS is to address this inconsistency issue. The best way to find out for now is to try the same thing on a Galaxy Nexus (24bit/1280x780 display) running ICS. That phone's display hardware is almost the same as ours while running ICS. Also, we can have our international GNote brothers/sisters running the Chinese Version of ICS 4.0.3 owners try it on their phone. As a matter of fact, I'm asking a couple of my friends to try that for me tomorrow when they wake up.
That image in the OP looks fine in every app that I've tried. Are others seeing banding in that particular image?

that's because your apps showing that image are 24bit capable.

I have the At&t Note and it has 0 black blocks
And I am very pick when it comes to screens. I had the international not that had a garbage screen with all videos and everything with dark scenes looked very very bad. The At&t Note I got its perfect with any video from YouTube app to the browser anteaters it plays the dark and black scenes pure. Its a hardware problem go and exchange. If we are running the same software its impossible to be the software problem. It has something to do with manufacturing dates or something.
And I know how to look for the black blocks.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
When you watch youtube videos is it HD when the HD and green dot are lit up or when they're grayed out?
Any way I watch there is no black clocks. The low quality plays low but all the colors are normal no ugly blocks. I know they are ugly. That's why I sold my I7000 unclocked version.

If everyone is experiencing the banding issue at the xda splash screen couldn't the dev behind the app confirm or deny the explanation in the OP. I'm not familiar with developing apps myself but someone here must be able to acknowledge if the problem is indeed related to app development.

(Portrait/night sight) Google Camera Port Fully Working!

Hey Guys!
After trying many Google Camera ports and playing with the settings I found 1 which is pretty stable, so far everything seems to work (if not please respond and I'll update the OP).
How to install and apply my settings :
Download the app from here (Not my port, credits to the original Dev) :
Better version, quality improves but slower with starting the camera. Faster processing!
Old version, slow at processing. But starts much faster (2sec difference)
Download my config.xml (New config from 10 March) :
config for the new version (11March)
Config for the old version (10March)
After downloading both files do this :
1. Install the GCam port (like a normal apk, no root or anything is needed)
2. Copy the config.xml to /Internal Storage/GCam/Configs (if this folders don't exist, you should create them yourself)
3. Open GCam and allow the permissions
4. Double tap somewhere in the down (next to the shutter button
5. Now a menu should popup asking you for a config
6. Press restore
7. Enjoy your GCam!
Share your pictures in this thread
When I'll have time I'll add pictures (comparing stock with GCam)
Comparison Stock VS. GCam (With my config)
Night Sight (without flash on both) :

GCam gives richer colors and less noise (especially in low light situations)
Thanks already!

Here's a example of how Night sight works with GCam vs Stock Moto camera.
Stock got the watermark in the left down corner
GCam doesn't have any watermark
Both were without flash
Pretty impressive!
Is there any way I can control the shutter speed in gcam? I shoot a lot of sports and I would love if I get sharp photos with moving objects.

You can try it with mine for the G7 Plus, I can't create one for the G7 because I do not have this particular phone. The only downside could be that taking a picture is a bit slower due to the Snapdragon 632 (G7P got the 636). But in general it should be working.
Let me know if it works, if so I'll add this to the OP ^^
Thanks!
Some example photos
I have tested this mod on my new 7+ and have to say the results are very good. I tested just the Night Sight and a few photospheres as the stock moto cam is probably best for everyday use in everything else - fast and easy to handle, great picture quality. However in some situations there is not such a big improvement at night with the mod - it really depends on the ambient lights and their uniformness in the scene.
Lets see:
Round one https://photos.app.goo.gl/qnfYeXaD4fgGagNTA, https://photos.app.goo.gl/wxNK9MAqQ1ShPSXL8 (taken with phone on solid support )
Round two https://photos.app.goo.gl/2pxSHSteaE64sHoNA, https://photos.app.goo.gl/Ygc4ZsDDcNNCZEeXA (taken with phone on solid support )
Round three https://photos.app.goo.gl/ATs2x7UnAyrsJot99 (just handheld; no stock image in this case)
Round four https://photos.app.goo.gl/x9yCfcdoKbWo78Sc8, https://photos.app.goo.gl/9pzQGJa4DXgLs3hp8 (handheld)
Round five https://photos.app.goo.gl/Kif1YWhRt6bCACG99, https://photos.app.goo.gl/HL4LKe9c9yQddZk3A (taken with phone on solid support)
(first is always stock automatic, second is gcam with settings from the xml file)
I have also noticed that the camera name in google photos viewer is different for both camera apps which is very good because it allows to distinguish
And yes, the photospheres struggle with straight lines (which is to be expected, as the distortions in handheld shooting angles are substantial). Otherwise they are of better or worse quality, depends on how one looks at them - a few examples:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/PEDWhbpbWpio33G98, https://photos.app.goo.gl/ACmzBHdkgkTHXAD48, https://photos.app.goo.gl/EFhJq4zvSuCqcHji8
Regarding the photospheres I wouldn't mind if they were of higher quality even if the shooting and processing takes more time (maybe some setting?) and the file will be larger. The processing happens in the backgroud anyway.
I really appreciathe the work that was done here! :good::good:

Processing takes long because our processor will do the job, and we got a SD 6xx SoC so it will take a bit longer then a 8xx SoC. But like you told, it will work in the background
I tweaked the settings to get the maximum quality without having to wait like 10 seconds when taking the pictures. I can make it process faster, but this will be a lose of the quality, it is personal preference

So, if you managed to extract maximum that is possible (at whatever computational cost) than I'm happy with it Personally I don't mind waiting those 10 seconds, it's not everyday that one shoots photospheres and even so you don't usually need 20 of them in one minute.
Maybe if the mod creator added some setting so the user can decide by himself if they prefer speed or quality and they dont need to load up a configf file each time

First of all, I am not the creator of this port. I clearly stated this in the OP, I just made these configs and shared the download links. If you load the config once your set up and don't have to load it anymore, unless you play with the settings and want to revert it like before.
Short :
Install apk, set config and you're all set. Next time you'll open the camera config is already loaded.
Works very good! Thank you!

Super resolution camera! (take 48mp or 96mp+ photos)

Hello you all!
I always look for the best posible resources to squeeze more from my phone. In this case I was looking for ways to improve even more the great camera the Poco has and so I searched the internet for super resolution applications (cameras) possible of taking multiple photos at once and then averaging them to create a higher resolution image the sensor is capable of taking, with less noise and more detail.
So I came across this old page where some scientific-like group called Almarvi has an imaging department dedicated to photography processing and there it was an super resolution demo app ( a camera app) capable of testing the algorithms of super resolution directly on Android. For those who knows about this technic, normally it is done with Photoshop o gimp, needing a computer to do so.
So I'm happy to share with you this discovery I made, I couldn't find any blog posts about it or even Reddit nor here in xda.
The app is really basic, pretty unstable, and sometimes it closes, but I must say: In various situations it beated the Google Camera port in term of details and lesser noise.
What it does is take multiple photos (you can choose how much, but normally I suggest you use less than 20), then you can preview a small crop to see the final result and adjust sharpness (as well as changing mode to median or mean, and using averaged colours or not). After the processing, you end up with a 48mp averaged photo (if choosen x2 factor, 96mp x3, etc!!)
I leave the link where you can download it for free
http://zoi.utia.cas.cz/mobilesr
I think is pretty good for taking still landscape photography or non moving subjects. Gcam is still gcam, but this app if used well can give a sharper and best looking image.
All this been said, I found more than 96mp (x3) is not worthy because of the file size and image doesn't improve more than 48mp.
Sorry for the long post, but I think this is a very rare app, people should know it exists besides the well known gcam.
Try it and tell me, and remember, steady hands!U
Update: You can change exposure value with the volume rockers !
To clarify, it creates a real 48mp image (or more), I tested zooming in and you can zoom deeper comparing to gcam, and you can check the information of the photo to see the dimensions. When zooming in you can see less compression and better details than gcam in most situations, difference is very clear when you see it in a computer screen.
It works. How to make it bigger than 48mp?

Touch the 3 dots in the bottom right corner to open the menu, and touch in "SR factor" to change it, 2.0 is 48mp, 3.0 would make an 109mp image, you won't notice much of a difference though but is fun having such large image (use 10 or less photos or it will close probably)
It mention it uses yuv format acquired images, thought poco wasn't able tu produce this kind of images because of lack of full level 3 camera api

I think it has, that's why gcam port is also fully working, and this app works too, you even can save the yuv frames but I never tried
Pretty good results (see picture), but at 100% the quality betrays this technology. Anyway, there is place to improving. I'll follow this thread.

Yes, it's pretty limited since you can't zoom or change the exposure for example, but I think it is useful for some special situations, like a landscape

It looks like it won't be updated because the app is basically just a demo they used to test the super resolution algorithm they created, is a shame because it's the best implementation I could find on a mobile phone, and any phone with camera 2api enabled could improve a lot their photo quality with this app, specially those who don't have a gcam port. I tested the app a lot , for several months, and I've found that In terms of quality it beats the gcam most of the times, but it doesn't mean it produces a better photo, gcam is well know for taking great looking photos in just one click, but if you zoom in and compare the two photos side by side you will see this app bringing a lot more detail and less compression artifacts, noise is in several cases equal or less than gcam aswell.
In the end, I want it to share because it's another good option, and maybe if someone wants to print their photos taken with their phones then this app will help a lot thanks to the super resolution

Actually the gcam port is not 100% functional, for example it doesn't have a working "photo booth" or "top shot" specifically because the pocophone camera drivers won't support yuv format which is needed for said features

Are you sure? I know there are features missing but that doesn't mean necessarily that it can't take yuv photos, at least in this app I can, there is an option to save yuv files and they appear in my files when I take the photo, I think this app only works using yuv pictures to make the super resolution, if Poco doesn't support them then this app should throw some error (like the one you get if you try this application on devices without camera 2 api enabled.) Please check that information

EDIT: I accidentally found how to change exposure values in this app but I think it isn't working, only works for the preview but no in the final image, by using the volume rockers.
EDIT 2: I tried again this time activating the option use lowest iso possible and then you can adjust exposure using volume rockers!, it changes the shutter speed, so now it only lacks zoom and a better stability, but pretty good alternative and best of all free!

It might be the best of the free apps but is there a paid app better than this one?
The pics turned out blurrry... The mega pixels are there, but no quality, detail and sharpness for me...

Guys, the app is good. I tested it thoroughly and tested also the upscaling of Photoshop, which is far worse than SuRmob's.
My example of SuRmob capture: link.
The upscaled Gcam picture using Photoshop's best algoritms: link.
And because my rebel neurons wanted to test also the result from RAW picture upscaled using Photoshop, I also made a collage with two crops (100% scale) with SuRmob result vs RAW jpg upscaled with PS. See it attached in the link below.
Those who got bad results I advice them to let default settings. I only modified ISO (to low), 10 captures instead of 5 and never use sharpness over 3.

I searched everywhere, but in Android this is the best I could find. The only one paid app that does this is cortex camera, but I tried it and it hangs when trying to take well lit scenarios, it's really buggy and abandoned in early stages by the dev, but in iOS there are 3 cameras, the same cortex (much better than Android and updated one), Hydra and other one I can't remember.

Exactly, those are the settings I recommend too. After months of testing it I can say you need to experiment with it to get the best results, but the best about this camera I think is the far more natural looking photos it produces, and very noticeable quality improvement when looking on bigger screens or printed.
I also tested against raw and gcam and, while gcam is still the preferred choice in a lot of cases, when needing take a more detailed photo or cropping I use this app, so, the best I think is to leave it installed and use it when you like it.
This was my secret app so show some love , I think is a really great discovery, not only for this device, but for everyone with camera2 API, I think if xda developers found this app they would write a post about it because it is really good
Isn't this the same as almalence's "Super" mode in thrir "a better camera" app? Never tried that app on the Poco, but I think that app checks the devicename in the build.prop regarding the super mode. This feature was only available for the Nexus 5 and a few other devices, so probably "Super" mode won't show up on the Poco. Anyway, thanks for the demo app link!

[UPD] Super-Pack of Google Camera MODs for OnePlus 8 Pro!

Hello OnePlus Addicts,
Here is a Custom-Made SUPER-PACK of some of the newest Google Camera Mods available out there, which contains the work of several developers such as Greatness (Rakin), B-S-G, P.Z.D, MTSL, LMC and Wichaya.
Please, keep in mind that I am not an app developer, myself, just an enthousiastic end-user happy to share the good stuff!
DOWNLOAD (APKs + Custom Profiles): https://gofile.io/d/OCsHTd
[ LMC R15 is currently the latest GCAM Mod included in this Super-Pack ]
>>> The included XML configuration profiles are made for ONEPLUS 8 PRO ONLY! Using them on another device may result in some serious bugs, crashes, and it will definitely not bring you the same user experience... <<<
1) Just download the file above, unzip it (using the provided password), then install the apk file of your choice on your device.
2) Extract the appropriate xml configuration file, as well as its folder, onto your phone internal storage.
3) Then, just start the app, give the necessary privileges, double-click on the lower black area near the 'shutter' button of the app, it should allow you to load custom profiles. Select my xml, press ok, done!
Some of these mods come with Face Detection, Face Retouch (both Front & Back sensors), great color reproduction, low noise, excellent details (especially on the main back sensor), FHD & 4K videos @ 30/60FPS with OIS/EIS stabilization, Night Shots, Astro-Photography, Portrait and more...
However, there is still no Distortion Correction/Fix on Ultra-Wide sensor, on any GCam mod I have tried sor far actually. This might come in the future, but it seems to be quite hard for devs to implement in their respective mods. This can be fixed by some apps in post-editing anyway...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are some 'hidden' shortcuts in some of these GCam mods! For example, with Greatness, P.Z.D, MTSL and LMC, you can access the (very useful) Exposure/ISO menu by long-pressing the circle 'gallery' button on the lower-right of the main app screen, which will provide you with a choice of ISO settings, as well as Exposure choices. The lower the ISO, the better the final picture quality, but it will take more time to 'capture' your image. The same goes for Exposure; the longer the time, the better your image (and the lower iso at the same time), but you may have to be steady if you go lower than 1/10s.
A long-press on the Camera-Switch button (on Greatness Mod), on the lower-left of the main app screen, will directly bring you to the App Settings.
Double-Press the viewfinder itself will zoom 2x to what you want to shoot, and will display the Zoom Bar at the bottom, so you can finely adjust it!
There is also a 'Sunset' shortcut on the main screen/viewfinder (Greatness Mod), just above the 3 back sensors, which should theoretically bring better color reproduction and lighting to your sunsets.
Also, one personal advice when using some, if not all of these mods: You will get BETTER EXPOSURE as well as LIGHTER SHADOWS when selecting your focus zone MANUALLY (within limits of your focus zone of interest, obviously). This goes for Daylight shots, as well as Nightshots, and another advice would be to try to select either a Dark area of your image (when shooting in daylight) OR one of the Brightest zones (for example, some streetlights at night), and then take the shot. The App should then do a better job at adjusting your Exposure, Contrast and Shadows, and this will greatly reduce risks of Under-Exposing or Over-Exposing your shots. When taking snapshots of people, in case the app can't detect their face, make sure you select it manually, you will definitely get brighter, more detailed skin results. It may be one extra-step, but I personally found out that it was usually worth doing!

I've managed to get wide-angle and tele to work perfect with our 8 Pro, as well as great quality from those 3 lenses, especially the primary one. Front cam works good as well.
[N00b m0de 0N] I made an XML that you could load to the app to get everything set perfect, so you can play with it immediately, file is attached to this thread. Make sure you have created a 'GCam' folder in your internal storage, as well as a 'Configs7' subfolder, and copy the xml file inside this subfolder. Then just load my file by double-clicking on the black area of the GCam app, near the shutter button. [N00b m0de 0FF]

Always excited to try a new GCam and Config against the stock camera. When sampling a couple captures, I am noticing a yellow tint vs stock in low light. Anyone else with the same result / suggestions on tweaking to correct for this effect?

Hi names,
Not getting any specific yellow tint in 'normal' low light on my side, except maybe in extremely dark / near obscurity which gets slightly orange (not the normal night scenery you would capture, anyway). It's definitely related to the AWB, so I suggest you try some other options in the settings if you get this yellow tint, but it might also be that the device lens cannot even "guess" the white balance if too dark to capture. However, if you don't get this yellow tint with stock, as you mention, then it's definitely something you may want to tweak in your GCam AWB settings. Good luck and please share your results with us

As far as I could see, it seems to work fine, but I didn't do side-by-side comparison between stock camera app and this GCam release.
Gonna give her a test drive with your settings.
Edit: some photo comparisons. I believe I've uploaded in the proper order so as to tell which camera is which.

Have to say, video in the dark compared to photo is awful on the 8pro camera, be er noticed it before , Superb in the day but at night it's pants.
Thanks for adding this..will give it a shot. Cheers
Edit: installed, working well. Will test tonight.
Never seen that photosphere before, that's nifty. Anyway to actually view them images though? Gallery just shows like half an image.

Hi, thank you for your feedback and for adding those pictures, interesting to compare. As you can see, contrasts are slightly boosted, which results in a bit darker photos, something you can counterbalance to some extent by adding +2 brightness in your settings. It depends on people's preference though, and I personally tend to prefer photos with more contrasts in general, which makes them look a bit more 'dramatic'.
But where this GCam will shine compared to the stock app is definitely in low-light / night-time scenarios, so I invite you to compare both apps and check the results carefully. You should be able to see how vastly superior GCam app is, in terms of noise, dark areas coming back to life, details. As some say, it's like switching on the light in the middle of the night, but better see by yourself
I have another GCam version and if this one is like the one I use it's great in low light compared to stock. It's not even comparable at how bad stock is (everything is red).

Detailed info I found on Google for the app:
What is the lib patcher?Libpatcher - is a custom setting where you can set all the settings to your liking
Radius Temporal changes the graininess of the image by affecting noise, the higher the image is more blurry and less noise, the lower the more noisy, but more detail
Tone Curve is where you can adjust dark points, white points, shadows, highlights. It is recommended to enable and leave the default values or tweak them (advanced users)
Sharpness allows you to control the sharpness of the image. Zoom in for low-light shots, and zoom out for selfies.
Luminance Noise Reduction is what controls the “graininess” in images caused by high ISO. Decrease it to get more detail at the expense of high noise, or increase it if the noise is unacceptable to you
Color Noise Reduction: Controls color spots. There is usually no need to adjust it as this will not improve the quality, but you can increase it slightly if you see colored spots in the dark. Too much chroma noise can cause a decrease in saturation. Also known as color noise. Be careful with this setting it can mess with the fine details of an image.
Contrast settings allow you to control the contrast of the image. Increase it if you want darker shadows, and decrease it to make it brighter is the general idea. This is again a personal preference
Saturation is what allows you to control the saturation of the image. Increase it if you want more saturated colors in your photos. Obviously decrease if your HDR is getting too saturated. This is again a personal preference
Now there are some advanced settings. These affect the morphological processing. Naturally thats a very basic overview. I took the course while finishing up my engineering degree. It was difficult stuff past the basic level. I wont get into what these settings do beyond a decent generalization.
Warning to all these settings can absolutely have a drastic negative effect on your images. A lot of testing would be necessary by the end userLuminance noise reduction levels
Level 1 (Detail) changes the photo very slightly, slightly smoothing out small elements in the image.
Level 2 (Rough Surfaces) seriously alters the image by smoothing grain
Level 3 (Edges) doesn’t change much. Smooths edges slightly
Level 4 (Smooth Surfaces) radically alters the image by making it posterized by smoothing out large areas of the same color. Avoid magnification over 1.0
Color noise reduction levels
Level 1 (Detail) fine textures, but the same applies to rough details
Level 2 (Rough surfaces) fine textures, but the same applies to rough details
Level 3 (Edges) Edges are mainly defined by the contrast between one object and another
Level 4 (Smooth Surfaces) Smooth surfaces are generally uniform areas of the image. Like wallpaper with few small details
Tips:If you notice a certain color of spots on your low light photos. Check its frequency spectrum. Look where its at in the photo and go to the specific wavelet reduction setting and tweak it. See if you can remove it. More often than not these settings are used to improve astrophotography, low light and high detail images.
My sensor has more higher frequency color noise than others. Ive seen some XDA users where they had to turn down denoise. It really all depends on a lot of stuff. Its fun to tweak and squeeze out what you can.
YMMVWill post occasional pics displaying some of the modded apps performance on occasionWhy didnt your wavelet settings work for me
Factors that affect settings
Your phone
When it was made
The chip itself
The silicon in your sensor
Ambient weather conditions
The image processing firmware on the Pixel Visual Core
Other properties of silicon unique and intrinsic to your device
FAQWhy are your colors listed as frequencies?
Light is an electromagnetic phenomenon and as an RF engineer its easier for me to refer to spectra as a frequency but one could easily refer to it in wavelengths or color (but color wont be accurate as thats up to perception)
What are wavelets?
A wavelet is how we define a center frequency and some deviation. We use wavelets because a color is not just one frequency its a range see here : Spectral color - Wikipedia 10 Its also an entire subset of mathematics used by anyone who works with the spectrum (i.e RF engineers, optical engineers (fiber stuff), biomedical engineers). They are helpful because we can take the average of a color spectrum (say blues) and convolve it with the signal to find the center frequency of blue or the blues in a subset (image). It basically the magic behind the IM processing math.

Just tried a sample of my night time “light bleed” mode and its okay. It still need more tweaking but heres an example of what tweaking your denoise settings can do. The image is far better than a stand night photograph (even with some longer exposure)
Keep in mind you wont remove all the noise. In fact it sometimes takes noise to remove or smooth noise (dithering). Dithering is a process where we add a bit of noise to a data set in an attempt to constructively perturb the signals we want to convolve, isolate and amplify over the average.

All praise goes to the creator and those that put all the hard work on creating it for us. I'm glad you have enjoyed using it.
I forgot exactly where on here I read and applied these settings via lib patcher, but with these settings, detail is far greater preserved than stock cam. there is a bit of noise but the detail preserved is worth it to me. the over the top denoise and sharpening is really evident on pets. give these settings a shot and lemme know if you can figure out how to preserve the detail with less noise!

Stock looks better. Too much noise on other.
even in great lighting situations, the stock cam denoises so much and loses so much detail in post processing.. for me, the little extra noise in low light is well worth it. I'm trying to find some pics of another dog outside and it's really evident how much post processing stock gcam has regardless of available light, but I may take more later. you can always play with the lib patcher to increase/decrease post processing
I have tried to increase the details to the max, and the mod does exactly what it is supposed to do, increases details and increases noise
It is now time to look for the best compromise. But I think the Google denoising algorithm is not so bad, I have seen far worth on Huawei phones
Why on my stock Pixel 6 the lib patcher options don't show up? It needs root?

I am not root. In the settings, goes to Mod Settings and you should see a Lip-Patcher option, above the gestures

Sorry it's completely my fault, I installed the wrong mod now it works except for the faces based autofocus which crash the app. Any workaround for this?
I got it to become the sorta default camera. I copied all the files from the new gcam into the original gcams app folder meaning install new gcam and then copy it's contents over. I
made a backup of the stock camera and opening stock apk now is the new gcam. I am trying to get self illumination working on the face unlock app lol haven't been able to get tnsg working yet. Edit I removed the gcam because face unlock app was messing up.

if you're taking photos of stationary objects, I find the best results paired w the mods I posted earlier, and changing the max amt of frames HDR Enhanced mode uses to 25. then use HDR enhanced as opposed to just HDR+. takes a second to capture won't work well with moving objects but takes a lot of noise out
I tried with Nyolsson's settings and it is a very nice compromise
