Can anyone comment on the quality when video calling on 4G (Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt)?
(and state what app you used, Tango, Fringe, etc)
Ive only been able to try it with people on other carriers like sprint, which didnt work super well because (i think) they didnt have a good signal...
thanx
Danny
I use Tango with friends and family on Verizon, Sprint and AT&T with a variety of phones (Evo 4Gs, Samsung Captivates, Droid X, etc) and it has worked exceptionally well even on 3G, so I imagine over 4G it would be even higher quality.
I've tried out the skype video several times and the video/audio quality was fine. could receive everything all clear and was sending just the same. this was over 4g, not 3g.
If you are using skype then I assume you are rooted?
thanx for the response

oh yes i am. i was using the froyo version a month back running bamf rom. then i switched to gingerbread (synergy rom) and that version didn't work. but a new one just came out that works apparently.

So I'm on DasBAMF, and tango video calls worked fine before I was on this. I can see other people, but it seems to not be getting access to my camera. There's a little black screen in the bottom of the corner where my picture should be.
I'd post this in the thread for the rom but I don't have the permission yet.

I found that it doesn't work well with 3G - either voice and/or video go in and out. Hopeing it gets better soon
It worked fine on 3G before I switched to DasBAMF though, and my friend who's using her iPhone has it working fine over AT&T 3G.
Video was choppy over 3G but worked between my wife's iphone4 and my phone the other night. Both of us on VZW 3G.
That choppiness is horrible with mine - but I only had 2 bars in 3G only area (could be my problem)
Tried tango over 4G and and iphone on wifi. Worked fine, quality was great.
Unfortunately, Tango drains my battery in the background even when its not running. Had to uninstall it.

Pretty good review. Seems very honest. Though I happened to read a few comments.....did someone really say the Thunderbolt was better.....

Youtube commentors are the bottom of the barrel.
He stated call quality was worse when connected to 4G. All other things being equal, why should that affect call quality? The phone doesn't use the data network for calls, does it?

I don't know but he also said it shoots in 1080p but that's wrong. He also said the battery is good and should last all day so I hope he's right about that.
I believe on CDMA that 3G turns off when on a call, but 4G stays on because it's on a separate radio? I imagine 4G being on while on a call could definitely degrade something.
His comments about 3G and 4G calling were interesting. As someone coming for a OG EVO, I never even considered having 4G on for voice calling, but I guess it certainly can happen, particularly if you're not managing radios aggressively.
Another plus for me is that I noticed the phone located itself in Irvine (my home city), so the review comments on call performance and reception are particularly helpful.
I do wish he was a bit more specific about what he had running for his battery comments. It sounded like he was on 4G a lot during his testing, so this is also encouraging.
He did get the video capture capabilities wrong, though (he mentioned 1080p recording a couple times).
reviewer is a moron, 3g/4g are only for data and do not effect your calls at all. calls are done through 1x. for ****s sake, stopped video after hearing that. im not interested in the review of someone who has absolutely no idea what he is talking about.
Correlation =/= Causation

No, 3G is for voice, 4G is for data. That's why the Thunderbolt (which uses SVDO not EVDO) can get data while on a call.

maybe thats true on verizon but on sprint voice calls are over 1x not 3g and certainly not 4g. both 3g and 4g and only for data
Never the best compared to the leader smarthone galaxy s2.

He speaks the truth, the only way 4g could affect call quality was if the radios interfered. I'm thinking the more likely culprit is the radio towers themselves when he was in a 4G area.

I definitely don't download any data via 3G. I downloaded all my data via 4G on my Ntelos 3100 from 1994.
....zZzz
From the video, the menus were flying and the internet looks much improved too. He did make a few errors though. I hope he is right about the battery life.

Newbee to this section and photon in general. My son has an epic touch 4g and is very much unhappy with dropped calls, texts that arrive hours later, things that pertain to the phones ability to make calls etc. I have heard that the photon is very good as a phone, maybe it has a stronger antenna or something? I myself have an evo 3d and it's not the greatest as far as phone calls either. To me all of these devices are pretty close spec wise (dual core, good graphics, etc) so i was thinking about trying to trade one of the phones for a photon. Do you think i would notice an improvement in call quality? If i do trade should i look for a phone that has not been updated past a certain point (for rooting purposes)? thank you for your time.

would definitely notice a difference, p photon been a great phone best I've ever owned....yeah try to get on thats on 2.3.4.... if your planning on unlocking, I think root can be done either way but if you want to unlock the bootloader need the older version, granted I have no idea if the newest photons on the shelves have been updated though so might be worrying for nothing, but best to play it safe ya know

my father in law just upgraded to the photon and loves it. It came with 2.3.4 from Best Buy and I had no problems rooting and unlocking out last night.
The photon has been the best phone I've had also. Compared to my wife's Epic and some friends Evos it gets signal and doesn't drop calls like there's do.

Coming from a plethora of samsung devices I am blown away by the signal quality and strength of this phone.

+1....Compared to E4G and ogEVO the Photon is miles above them for signal strength and overall "phone function" usage.
The photon definitely has a better radio than other phone I've seen. I have friends on sprint who will barely hold 1-2 bars of signal while my photon has a solid 4. I've never had a single dropped call and only had late texts one time, and a simple reboot fixed it.

i agree to all. High quality radios in the Photon that will provide you with great communications. For smartdevices, its up there but not 1st. for a phone where communication is key, it is untouchable. you will be impressed by the call quality if you buy one.

As a phone, it gets some weird popping sounds sometimes, like a short in the speaker. Makes me think the other person hung up.
There was an audio routing issue at launch that has since been fixed and not the MoPho is superior in many ways. CDMA is reliable so far as retaining calls, dropped calls are typically a network issue, that said the issues you've seen with other phones dropping calls are probably device specific and should be regarded as such. Unless you're talking about a device sounding "tinny" or garbled or echoes ect. call quality is usually network related.
Photon owns. Best phone I've ever had. Out of box, Modded, whatever. MoPho.
As a phone the Motorola Photon 4G is the best phone on Sprint. Motorola is known to make great wireless radios. You will get better signal with the Photon than any other phone on Sprint.
So if you're a person that actually counts on getting all your calls, text, and voicemails on time, currently the Photon is your best option on Sprint. I use to have the Epic Touch, great device in all aspects except for being a phone.
Sprint is the worst major carrier in the U.S. in my opinion. I've been with all 4 majors. The only thing good about Sprint is unlimited plans. Their prices aren't too far off other carries. You may save a few bucks but it's not major. Just good plans. I changed to Verizon. You pay more but I get signal everywhere and I'm a person that relies on phone calls.

Hey guys I'm a pretty new member but I want to save on my phone bills by using a flextab from bell on my sg3 and I like Dell voice because you can port your number. Anyone find the voice calls over cellular networks absolutely horrible compared to wifi? I was wondering if there's a fix for this or somehow a way to make my phone think it's on wifi even though it isnt; if that would even help.
Thanks!
By the way I'm in Canada so Google voice isn't an option for me

What version are you using currently? They seem to have released a new version that says it has better call quality. I have an SIII on Rogers and the quality is pretty good with the new update. It uses about 32kbps up and 32 kbps down so any decent 3G connection should be able to handle the calls. What is bad about the voice?
Also, since you are using Bell you have no EDGE fall back option, which it doesn't work very well on. Where I live, all I get reliably is EDGE so I have to rely on my WiFi for calling. When I'm in the city though I have had some long conversations without too much issue.

Thanks I did the know that! Maybe I should try getting the Rogers flex plan but I heard that it won't work on cellphones.
Basically i own the One X+ on ATT here in the states and my wife owns the new iPhone 5. We have both never done video calling before so new to this. Just want your guys' input in what app is best for our two phones to video call each other over both 4g/3g network and wifi. We only have wifi at home so on the go would be using mainly 4g as we luckily live in an area where 4g is everywhere.
I've tried Tango but even with 4 bars on 4g network the video quality was kind of crappy and choppy. We were even just 10ft away from one another to try it out and still choppy, not very clear video calling.
Basically what's the best app for quality in the video call over 4g and wifi? I would assume all apps would work great over a good wifi connection but we are on the go a lot so will depend more on 4g connectivity over the ATT network.
Haven't tried the famous Skype app yet as the best reviews doing research all point to Tango. Just not impressed at all with the Tango video quality over Skype.
If it helps my device is rooted and running Elegancia custom rom. My wife is stock iPhone software.

my fiancee has the iphone 5 and i have the hox+. we use skype, and it does just fine. it seems to work a little better on my end than the iphone end.
OoVoO
I use OoVoO
It's free app and also works great with 3G or 4G also
And it has desktop software too
so you can call on computer also (Just like Skype) .... isn't it great.....
