Unrooting - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently running a near stock Fascinate. All I have done is rooted no custom ROMS, no custom themes just rooted and froze some applications. I would like to unroot as the missed call problem is really bugging me and I think I am going to try and switch phones at the VZW store (I can't handle it anymore!) Now I know I can ODIN to DL09 then go to OTA that way, but I am wondering, because I have no custom Kernals and no custom Roms if there is a way to simple unistall my root access so that I don't have to go waste a day downloading the OTAs.

I think there was a one-click root method that may have allowed you to "unroot" your phone. but if I'm making this up, then that's the process you will have to go through in order to get your phone back to stock.

Odin'ing back to DL09 and then OTA'ing up to ED04 doesn't actually take that long. I went from CM7 to stock ED04 in about 30 minutes.

I know it doesn't take that long but I then have to go completely back to stock and download all my apps and such again. I decided I am just going to keep the fascinate but I want to know if there is a way to unroot so that when we FINALLY get Gingerbread I can OTA without much hassle!

If all you did was root and freeze apps, on any of ed ota's just unroot with super one click. It has an unroot button, just make sure you defrost your frozen apps and undo any other changes first. Or just go to the general section and follow the sticky on how to unbrick your fascinate, even links to zip files so you don't have to suffer through the ota's, ed04 unrooted stock takes like 20 MIN.

So the one click root is guaranteed to work on the fassy? When I unroot with Superoneclick Root, does it put me back to stock as in I would have to re-download all my applications, reset settings ETC or does it just un-establish root and leave me the same?
With superoneclick is it just like CWMing and then rooting with the SuperUser-Busybox.zip that I flash with ODIN?
I am a bit confused by it and I would just like some basic information pertaining to the Fassy rather than generic for all phones thanks!

I always just ODIN back to DL09 and am fixed everytime

I would use SuperOneClick. I just unrooted my wife's Fascinate with SuperOneClick and it worked perfectly. Just unfreeze your frozen apps and run SuperOneClick, click Unroot and in a few minutes, your phone will be unrooted. I would, however, uninstall the Superuser app before unrooting because every time I've used SuperOneClick to unroot a phone, it works, but the Superuser app remains on the phone.
Doing this will not restore your phone to factory. Any apps/data on your phone will remain on your phone.
Hope this helps.

[q] unrooting sgs2 (already on stock rom)

My Goal: set everything back to stock for warranty. (charging system is *%$#ed)
my problem: I am stuck at the unrooting part.
I have read everything I can over and over and yet I still find myself in a predicament. I have restored everything back to stock (I rooted and unlocked my SGS2, but I never used a custom ROM).
I have relocked the device, I have reset everything back to stock. I used the jig to reset the flash counter. I re flashed my secure kernel. Everything checks out, except my Superuser access.
Now here is the part where I am stuck. So essentially from what I read I have 3 options that I can recall:
1 - just re flash my stock ROM to remove root (seems pointless as I have never had to flash a ROM, seeing as I am still on my stock ROM)
2 - unroot using SOC (which failed to work, stuck on step 6)
3 - use Samsung Kies to update. (this also failed, won't detect my phone, and yes it is in Kies mode, no debug)
I am at a loss. I am on the Bell network in Canada, and I am on UGKG2 firmware.
Please let me know if you need more information. Also, I apologize if the answer is in one of the threads. I have been reading everything whenever I can, and just can't figure this one out. thanks for your patience in advance

Well, there is a market app (rootcheck) but it's easy to check yourself, if you dont have superuser in your app drawer you are not rooted.
Let's say, you dont have superuser app and you cannot access cwm recovery = you are not rooted
If I may ask, why exactly is it that you cannot unroot without flashing an original firmware? Why does SOC even give you the option if it doesn't work? Thanks for the timely replies though

soc does work but a lot of people screw up 3 Simple steps and end up with a semi bricked phone.
Flash a stock firmware is probably the more "safe" system. Also allows you to flash latest version that some countries will never receive or receive very late.
Sry my English sux even more today lol

Ok... So let's troubleshoot why I can't get the unroot to work for SOC... I have tried both in and out of download mode. Debugging on and debugging off. Yet the unroot stops at step 6 and does nothing...

I read in another post it is as simple as removing superuser.apk and the su folder on system...

I just flashed the stock rom back. Seems to look quite 100% like it did when it came in the box. Jigged to kill flash counter. I think I am set to send it in Thanks a lot guys.
Following that, looks like for root you just need to download superuser app from market and you are good to go....
Its not so easy as you know.
Removing the superuser apk just removes the superuse app, but then you end up with a semi rooted phone with cwm recovery (that you dont want if you want to go back to stock)

Good im glad you managed to "restock" the phone as you see it is fast and easy with flash of a stock rom

DROID X2, rooted and stuck on 2.3.4 OTA upgrade

My participation in this forum saved my ars on some weird behavior my rooted x2 had been exhibiting lately. update: Nandroid backup saved me. Now, after a few days my phone is bugging me to OTA upgrade to 2.3.4. I see that this gingerbread has considerable benefit on ye ole ROM front.
Can someone help me out with a step-by-step upgrade on my rooted device? Do I need to unroot first? I have to admit to an unroot prior to my problems. Something with an app I need to get upgrade. Thanks in advance for the help.

If you want to apply the ota, grab ota rootkeeper from the market. Open the app, save root, then go to town updating. No need to unroot. Once updated, open the app again and hit restore root, as the ota will remove root.
That's pretty much it. As it stands that is the only way to get root on the latest ota so if for some reason you run into an issue and lose root, you will have to sbf back to 2.3.4.

For updating to the latest release you can't have changed any of the system files (ie frozen), and if you are rooted it's best to do a temp unroot (with a Voodoo backup of course) and make sure you boot into the Stock Recovery and attempt to flash that way. Should go without saying that you have to be on the stock rom.

Slim, i have ignored the OTA upgrade notification for 9 months. If its not broken, dont fix it theory. I had tweaked the phone with root only so that i could barnacle my tablet to the internet. Since i just saw how easily i recovered my phone back to my last nandroid backup, i figured i would try to upgrade and ROM this thing as it seems ive gotten it this far. Can someone link me to an easy to follow, step by step on "flashing stock recovery mode"? I can unfreeze programs with titanium backup and then unroot with ota rootkeeper. Just lrt me know how to stock recover, ie: phone plugged in? Unzipped file locations? External or internal sd card? I appreciate the help.
if update is failing
try unrooting with rootkeeper (keeps backup) like slimman suggested
if that doesn't work it's time to flash 2.3.4 sbf

a little surprised, that you made it 9 months and phone didn't try to install overnight after several notices
I know that has happened with other moto phones like D2 and D2G
Guys root has nothing to do with not being able to receive ota.
Nothing.
Lol
It sounds to me like you need to sbf back 2.3.4
Make sure your phone is fully charged.
Do you have usb debugging enabled?
Forget about guessing games, sbf back to 2.3.4.
Root your phone via Pete's. Do not use zerg.
Install recovery
Install superuser etc. If you feel the need but Pete's su. Works fine.
Install voodoo rootkeeper.
Make the back up.
Again with these phones root has NOTHING to do with receiving or not receiving ota.
If your ota is borked there's somthing else going on. You must have removed (bad idea) or froze something
Just sbf and follow my instructions again.
Hope that helps.
As I said in my guide, all updates were done with root, and I went from2.3.3>2.3.4>2.3.5
All rooted each time all retained root via rootkeeper.
Hope that helps

Very easy question.....

Once i Odin back to stock,do i have to root my phone again? I`ve never Odin back to stock and i`ve flashed 10 different roms.
Not usually, it is possibly to occasionally "lose your root" at which point you'd have to reroot your phone, but that's not typical. to give you an idea, I've Odined probably over a hundred times easy, and I've only "lost root" twice. ^^

Interesting O-o
In my time...I've used about 5 different odin images to flash back to stock and all of them never removed my root access.
I know that the one in the toolbox doesn't (or at least it didnt for me) ^^ So OP use that one :3
If I remember right... Odin does in fact remove root.
Odin doesn't clear internal sd, the file used for root (update.zip) is still there. Once you odin to stock all you have to do is go into recovery and reinstall packages. you should be rooted from there on.
I'm referring to stock odin files, not custom rom ones.

Keeping Root I545VRUDMI1

Not sure if its posted but I have been asked a bit about keeping root. I took the OTA from Verizhon not Kies so I am not sure if that makes up for anything. Anywho, I took the plunge with both Voodoo and SU Pro backing up my root and kept it. I know there are root methods out there for it already so its not horrible if you have lost it. Just letting you know, Voodoo, SU Pro works.,,

Voodoo does work.
I can attest to that. The biggest issue with updates after ME7 is now the knox warranty flag is included in the boot loader.
I see the knox status when I go into download mode and it was not there before.
I'm already rooted so the flag didn't trip.
Be careful with this update, only do it via OTA so that Voodoo can restore root.
If you do it vie Kies or Verizon software, you will lose root *AND* re-rooting may flip the flag.

Did you use Kies or just the OTA? As I said in my post I used the OTA from the phone. Kies may be doing something additional to the phone.
Worse case scenario is you will need to reflash ME7/ MI1 from odin and root again using the "root de le vega" method

DO you have TiBu and freeze/ deleted bloat and stock apps? If that's the case depending on what it was it will error. Like I said I took mine over the phone after checking for it the other day manually. If manual doesn't work Kies will update it when plugging into your PC.
Hopefully if anything was deleted a backup of stock was made and you can reload it. If not, just try unfreezing everything thing. Assuming you are using or have used TiBu.
After unfreezing several Verizon apps and 3 battery pulls, I was able to download and attempt to install the update only to have it fail at install...

Have you deleted anything not just freeze? If there is a fail on install its usually a self check fail... something it's looking for is missing.
I have the stock ME7 image and could upload it to drop box so you could reflash on odin, LMK. To me it sounds like a app or stock system piece is missing. I've seen OTAs fail on Motorola phones simply because the yahoo app was deleted. I know, it doesn't make sense, but its what the phone self checks before installing the download.
Titanium doesn't sow any apps deleted but I did have Samsung watch set to user app. Adjusted that back and still nothing. Going to try pulling SD card tomorrow and try the update again. Guess we'll see what happens

I still think a clean slate wipe is in order. Other people even on the Root De La Vega report a taking OTA it working and keeping it as well.
Like I said, I froze but never deleted, but if if you deleted the backups stored in TiBu at one point, the deleted app its not going to show in TiBu. Thats why I always make a backup first of the fresh phone and upload it to drop box before even freezing things.
I may end up going that route. Good thing we can backup apps to the moon with tibu! Have u noticed improvements on the new update?

Nothing has caught my eye. Others are reporting the 4G is now operating off another/additional frequency or something like that, l and getting better reception but I have never had a problem where I live.
Did u happen to backup all your apps before rooting? I'm thinking I must have an app that was deleted and not backed up. I found that NFL was that way so installed and changed it to a system app with tibu

I'm trying to take the ota update but i'm a newb and didn't read about ME7's inability to flash roms and used ROM Manager to flash CWM. I think i need to restore the "stock" recovery in order to take the ota update.
Long time reader, first time poster.
Three questions.
1) For the "root de le vega" method, can I use 'Odin Mobile Pro'?
I don't have a PC so I can't easily use 'Odin' and i'm not sure how 'Odin Mobile Pro' relates to 'Odin'.
Is it the same thing but internal?
2) I have frozen tons of apps.
From my understanding from earlier posts, I need to unfreeze them all or this will fail?
3) After the Mi1 OTA, will my hotspot not work? or my wifi all together?
Thanks in advance

Can Root

I was rooted and all the fun stuff until I took the OTA. I used Odin and went back, used saferoot and just stayed rooted for a bit without putting a custom rom on. I didn't upload any roms. I was tired of getting the update notification and tried to get safestrap on to install a custom rom, but it wouldn't install. I then tried to use Odin to go back to stock and it will say "pass", but the phone is just the same it was before ODIN. I've tried even re-downloading all the programs, but it has no effect on the phone. No matter what I try, it doesn't effect the phone. It comes out the same way.

Your question makes no sense. What are you trying to accomplish?
My goal was to install a custom Rom (Trents).
I was rooted (with saferoot), I went to install safestrap, and that's when it all went bad. I lost root, so I tried to use Odin to format back to stock, it (odin) says it passes, but when it reboots, I am not rooted and nothing was formatted. All my screens are the same, no data is missing. It's like Odin can't re-format the phone.

Some how I got the 4.3 OTA. I don't remember accepting it, because I made the mistake of accepting the OTA a time or two before that one. That would explain why nothing is working.

Are you using 4.3 to Odin back? If not that is the first mistake.
Let us know, bc If you are using 4.3 to Odin back it sounds like your partitions might be a little messed up if Odin says "pass" but does not wipe the phone completely..
